- gfxlonghorn, on 07/31/2008, -7/+49Or they could not release him and not start him, and save a ***** load of money. I respect what Brett Favre has accomplished in the league, but what he did and is trying to do is not acceptable. You can't just leave a team and expect them to have a seat waiting for you when you decide to unretire. He should take the 20 mill and sit his ass down before he loses all of his fan base.
- BpWally, on 07/31/2008, -3/+4420 mill to stay the ***** off the field?
There would be no QQ'ing from me. - Clugenheim, on 07/31/2008, -9/+41As much as I like Farve, he needs to stop fake retiring and just ACTUALLY retire. He's getting too old for this. =/
- selmer, on 07/31/2008, -0/+28Damn, I feel SO bad for him.
*cringing as I pay $90 for gas and $120 for a week of ***** groceries* - otto989, on 07/31/2008, -4/+23excuse me?
from wikipedia:
most career NFL touchdown passes (442), most career NFL passing yards (61,655), most career pass completions (5,377), most career pass attempts (8,758), most career NFL interceptions thrown (288) (so what, that happens with 16 years of straight playing), most consecutive starts among NFL quarterbacks (253; 275 total starts including playoffs), and most career victories as a starting quarterback (160)
without question, favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks to play this game - stevenk87, on 07/31/2008, -1/+18Wow, at first I was on the side of the Packers front office, but they've had MONTH to deal with this situation and the best response they could come up with is to offer the guy $20 million to stay away? Talk about ***** incompetent...
- Foot56, on 07/31/2008, -0/+16I wish I was PAID 20 million not to work.. god damn
- vsaint, on 07/31/2008, -1/+17Guess what green bay? I'll promise to not be on your team for $10m. Use your judgement and see that I am clearly the better deal.
- AWhiteSinner, on 07/31/2008, -5/+18I live in Green Bay and am 20 years old so all I've known is Brett Favre. I was at the home game when he threw his last throw, an interception to end his career. He' be much better off staying retired instead of upsetting the whole city pissing us all off.
- wildsnake, on 07/31/2008, -0/+11$20M to do nothing WTF?
- XombieRobot, on 07/31/2008, -0/+10I wonder what John Madden has to say about this? The guy would totally marry Favre.
- acid0426, on 07/31/2008, -0/+102 dollars a year for 10 years? Damn I hope he get's that front loaded, with inflation and all. And let's not forget agent fees, that's like 6 dollars for Bus Cook. Payday!
- insanebrain, on 08/01/2008, -0/+9your groceries ***** ???
- lostsymphonies1, on 08/01/2008, -0/+9How is he getting too old if he had one of his best seasons ever less than a year ago?
- blackinthmiddle, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9Two things, acid. One, favre only has one championship. He got it when Reggie White was still there. Two, championships are not the only indicator of greatness. In basketball, Stockton and Malone are hall of gamers. Yet, Antoine Walker has a ring and they don't. In football, Trent Dilfer has a ring but Dan Marino doesn't. Again it's not the only indicator.
- schneid4323, on 07/31/2008, -1/+10That was the funniest thing I have ever read. Seriously it's Wisconsin paying Jesus to sit this one out.
- weweresaved, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9Wow, I read the title and literally LOL'd thinking this was a story from the onion.
- mordeci, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8$20 million to not play football? I've been not playing football for years and no one's given me *****.
- Wamzlee, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8Trying to bribe their former star quarterback to stay off the field is ***** embarrassing. I had my back behind Packers management, but right now they are looking like the enemy.
They would rather throw $20 million away at KEEPING a player OFF THE FIELD rather than to pay their starting running back a respectable signing bonus + benchmarks.
Right now I want Favre to show up and say ***** you to Mark Murphy. - Paal, on 07/31/2008, -1/+9haha, seriously?? are you kidding me? i'll be shocked if brady and manning stay healthy long enough to have the sort of career favre has had, your comment is just ridiculous acid0426 -- in fact, if you set brady and manning in a room with favre, i can all but guarantee that manning and brady would be kneeling in front of favre immediately
- Noah0504, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7The Packers told Favre they needed a decision before the draft. He's said at that time he wasn't 100% committed. Now he wants to play. I'm almost 21 years old. Brett Favre is the only Packers' quaterback I have ever watched start the position (okay, so I do remember a few Don Majkowski snaps). I'm still not quite sure how to feel about everything. Part of me think Favre needs to just take one for the team and stay retired. The Packers have made it clear they have moved on, but there is no way I could ever feel comfortable seeing Brett in another uniform.
Packer GM Ted Thompson has really mismanaged every aspect of this situation. If I were him, I'd be up every night praying things are going to be okay. - regression, on 08/01/2008, -0/+7"ground" jordan was no where near the player that "air" jordan was.
- bullox, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7Not to mention the only 3 time MVP in NFL history.
- mustluvdogs, on 08/01/2008, -0/+6Packers GM Ted Thompson is an idiot. Favre was a pro-bowl player for the Packers last year and led them to the NFC championship game. Why not let him at least compete for the starting job with Aaron Rogers? If Favre wins the job, why wouldn't you play your best quarterback on a team that has a legitimate chance to compete for a Super Bowl championship. If Rogers proves himself to be the better quarterback, then at least respect the contribution that Favre has made to the franchise and trade him to a team that can use him.
- firejack007, on 08/01/2008, -0/+6You'd offer him $40 million to stay off your tv set.....aaa ya. A lot cheaper to just change the channel.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/31/2008, -1/+6The deal was $20 over 10 years. If he played again the next year, it would break the contract and he wouldn't get any more money and would probably have to pay back anything he got already.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -3/+8Something's wrong.
I know people looking for jobs your know... - Wamzlee, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5And you don't think bribing him with money to stay away is ridiculous? I don't think Brett Favre is the only one to blame in this situation. Right now, the integrity of the Packers management is a disaster. They refuse to pay Ryan Grant a respectible signing bonus, but still give Poppinga a huge signing bonus when his starting job is in doubt to their free-agent pick-up Chillar.
- spudhead, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5My wife gave me 20 bucks to never sing in the car again.
I should have never taken it. I loved singing in the car. I just wish I could sing one more song in the car.
It sucks too because I blew the last line of my last song in the car. - TBBucs, on 07/31/2008, -2/+7I'm sick and tired of hearing about this guy. He's unquestionably a Hall of Famer, but all this uncertainty with his is bull *****. Seriously, he can't expect people to just wait around for him to make up his mind. Just stay retired, man.
Oh, and the Packers are idiots if they think that Brett is coming out of retirement because of the money. - jhalar, on 07/31/2008, -1/+6Super Bowls are won with great teams and great players, Brett is just one player his stats speak for themselves
- krnldmp, on 07/31/2008, -6/+11The problem started when somebody decided people should get paid to play football.
- DonQueso, on 07/31/2008, -3/+7It's Ted Thompson that's going to end up pissing the whole city off. Brett just wants to play football.....
Prediction: Goodell will reinstate him (favre) and Ted Thompson gets fired if Brett plays anything (or anywhere) other than starting quarterback at GB. wanna bet? - r3z0nate, on 08/01/2008, -0/+4And what the Packers are doing is better? They made it EXTREMELY noticeable that his retirement was exactly what they were looking for, aside from flat out stating it. I mean christ, they retired his number days after he announced along with the game date. If they want to move on, release him or trade him and get something. Paying him not to play is ridiculous, and with this upcoming schedule they might need a little help in the future.
I want to see Rodgers play, but I don't understand why they won't give him the oppurtunity or why they don't trade him if he isn't in the game plan anymore... this is just like Barry Sanders' career being cut short... a GM with an ego. - crypticlok, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5I really hope this situation gets resolved soon, without too much of a negative impact on the packers season.
- cadmiumpaint, on 08/01/2008, -1/+5Thats the problem...they just view Farve as "anyone" instead of an all time great, and someone who's been nothing but faithful to the city and franchise.
This is a real ***** way to say thank you for all those years of service. - thegrantman, on 07/31/2008, -3/+7Brett,be a man and walk away...without the cash.
- cr4ft, on 08/01/2008, -1/+5wtf is QQ'ing?
---------------------------------------------------------
UrbanDictionary.com
word: QQ'ing
"Literally, QQ is a set of crying eyes"
---------------------------------------------------------
Oh, of course, I completely agree! - jcroweall7, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Even as a Pats fan, I have to agree. Brady and Manning are great now, but when they get to be Favre's age, they'd each be lucky to be playing at HALF the level Favre played last season.
- firejack007, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4Wait, he didn't accept the $20 million and you're calling him selfish? Now if he said F** you guys and took it like most on here would've, you'd be saying how unselfish of him....what a sacrifice.....right.
- SouthsideIrish, on 08/01/2008, -0/+3We will take him in Chicago, since this old man would be the best QB on the team. Heck, he would be the best QB on many teams. If the Packers don't want him that is fine, but trade him or release him, because there are more than a few teams that would be glad to take him off their hands.
- AshamedAmerican, on 07/31/2008, -3/+6Hmmm... doing the thing you love, or (to him) another drop in the bucket?
- LinkGCN4, on 08/01/2008, -0/+3"Well, with a guy like Brett Favre, he's not gonna be playing football unless he gets on a team. That's basically what has to happen."
- theandy1, on 08/01/2008, -2/+5We should have tried this with Bush a long time ago.
- Wamzlee, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4I don't know who is being more of a jerk, the team telling him he can't unretire or ever play in their town again or the veteran still wanting to get on the field without being bribed.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -5/+8if you RTFA you can see the Packers are being dicks too him right back
- spudhead, on 08/01/2008, -0/+3I got dugg down for a similar (but not as strongly worded) comment.
It seems that the Packers have contributed to the drama and if they pushed him to retire or make a premature decision then they are partly to blame. On the other hand, I imagine the Packers had to start planning immediately after Brett declared his retirement and if he comes back they will have to go through all this again in one or two years.
It seems that Brett (and perhaps the Packer organization) didn't realize the implications of his retirement (or lack thereof). The problem is, Brett Favre is the Packers. - nick2, on 08/01/2008, -0/+3The Packers forced Favre to make a decision right away when he wasn't ready.
- akatherder, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4Madden has been blowing Favre for years. Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?
- bainfu, on 08/01/2008, -0/+2What has he done lately? He almost took them to the Super Bowl last year. He doesn't have it? Check out the stats he posted up last season. Hell, just check out the Packers win/loss record. Favre is an enigma, he gets older but still plays like he's in his late 20s.
Also have you ever watched him play? God forbid he does something that he's having fun while doing. He's one of the only players I see in the NFL that constantly has a smile on his face. -
