Dungy is a great coach and inspiration to the team. Good luck to him and the future of the Colts. - KrisStrong, on 04/29/2009, -4/+57The loss of his son was so tragic. God bless him and his family.
- LeadOffMan, on 01/12/2009, -5/+56classy guy.
Oh yeah, the patriots suck - KrisStrong, on 04/29/2009, -1/+38The worst thing the Buccaneers could have done was release Tony Dungy. He was respectfully one of the best coaches ever.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -1/+31Can't do anything but wish the guy the best. He has done nothing but good for football.
- cubs0110, on 01/12/2009, -1/+29Dugg for a great career, and an even better person.
- oriqin, on 01/12/2009, -3/+21NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Jericho6, on 01/12/2009, -3/+20Great coach, Great career. Could have gone for much longer, but I can understand walking away. Coaching is such a grind. Will be interesting to see who Indy looks to next. That's a great job to take one for anyone. I might say Shanahan, but the Colts won't give him his desired level of control.
- KrisStrong, on 04/29/2009, -2/+18So ESPN.com is reporting that FoxSports.com is reporting that he's retiring?
- mediablitz, on 01/12/2009, -1/+16One of the all-time classiest coaches/people in the public eye. Good luck with his charities.
- trondannyboy, on 01/12/2009, -1/+14I had the honor of meeting Coach Dungy in person. And he is one of the most humble and down to earth people you will ever meet. You will be missed Dungy but never ever forgotten.
- jester247, on 01/12/2009, -0/+13Our quarterbacks coach, Jim Caldwell, was named his replacement last year. Great loss for our city.
- jba68, on 01/12/2009, -0/+12What is your deal with Hating on Dungy. Manning was not the qb he was until Dungy got there. He helped him to grow into he qb that he is today. People were constantly questioning wether Manning was overrated and could ever get it done.
Dungy is a defensive guy, and the only reason that Tampa won was due to the defense that Dungy built down there. Along with hiring Kiffin and allowing him to run the defense. Gruden is the one that is overrated. Supposed offensive genius has not added anything to the offense, other than quarterback controversy.
Now with Kiffin gone, what will gruden do?
/not a bucs or a colts fan. - diggum85, on 01/12/2009, -1/+11I hope he continues in football in some capacity. He would be great in a personnel development role where his leadership could improve the league's image.
- shoppingkart, on 01/12/2009, -1/+10One of the best football coaches ever. Someone who believes in you and your abilities.
- Barbarino, on 01/12/2009, -1/+10That's because Jay Glazer single handedly has ruined ESPN in terms of scoops. Mort and Clayton and company have been scooped by Glazer every time this year turning Foxsports into a real player...
- UnpossibIe, on 01/12/2009, -2/+11Sad to see him go. By far the classiest NFL coach I've seen in my lifetime. He's been grooming his successor in Indy for the last few years. I forgot what his name is, I believe it's the current defensive coordinator.
- ihavebeenseen, on 01/12/2009, -1/+9You mean Peyton only got it done with Dungy
- amcnair, on 01/12/2009, -1/+9Gruden won a Super Bowl against his former team that was running the offense he designed, without even changing the audibles. The Tampa defense knew what play was coming as well as the Raiders offense did. Since then the team has slipped into mediocrity with occasional forays into the playoffs. Tony built that team and Gruden made the best of it for one year before it fell apart.
Gruden is the definition of overrated. - theduffster89, on 01/12/2009, -1/+9I may not be the biggest Colts fan in the world but I have the utmost respect for Tony Dungy. He is a great coach and will probably be a future Hall of Famer.
- kraig31, on 01/12/2009, -0/+8Indianapolis fans have seen this coming for a couple years, and especially the past couple of weeks. At the regular season finale against the Titans Dungy and his entire family took one last photo at center field- obvious foreshadowing.
Dungy has been mentoring Jim Caldwell for some time now, and I don't think fans will notice much change. Dungy has a track record of preparing promising individuals to take head coaching positions. Lovie Smith comes to mind... - rda1441, on 01/12/2009, -0/+7It"s time. Any time someone does the retire or not game after every year, time to get them out. Work till you want to work, then quit.
Good coach though. - Seemefearme, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8Do you honestly believe Gruden won Tampa Bay the Super Bowl? That was Dungy's groundwork. If Gruden had done it, he would have gotten them to the playoffs again and again.
- sketcher67, on 01/12/2009, -0/+7As a Buc fan I agree it was a mistake to let him go. To this day I like to think that Dungy's Bucs defense was the key factor in winning the superbowl but it's undeniable that the Raider's playbook had a hand in it aswell. Right now I'd trade Gruden for Dungy in a heartbeat.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -2/+8Thanks Tony! Wish you never left Tampa. Enjoy whatever comes next!
- jinjin, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5And since he's won the SB (with TD's team mind you), Gruden has gone to the post season only twice and lost both times in the wild card game. Gruden was lucky to be able to ride Dungy's coattails.
Dungy will go down as one of the greatest coaches ever! HOF in 2014! - Seemefearme, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5Just pray that Tampa Bay fires Gruden and picks up Shanahan. If any man could take a team with talent (Tampa obviously has some) and make them into a winning team it would be him.
- Seemefearme, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5Gruden might have been the head coach when they won, but the groundwork was Dungy's. I would agree with you if Gruden had even made the playoffs the following year, but he didn't, he finished 7 - 9.
- hanger69er, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5read article and find the answer to your question
- BugsSport, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Why would 4 people bury this comment?
- Ugoff, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Not surprising, Dungy has been saying he's been wanting to spend more time with his family, so this isn't really surprising. He is one hell of a coach though. Hopefully he'll be in the Hall of Fame one of these days. Maybe he'll be back in a few years though. Cowher retired not too long ago and he's thinking of going back to coaching.
- 1kewldude, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Gruden needs to step up and 'retire' now as well - we here in Tampa can only hope there is some master plan in place to bring Tony back to coach the Bucs - cause lord knows - we sure as hell dont want Gruden any longer!!!!!
- MrJ777, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Caldwell has been being primed to work with Manning on offense for years now. Hes been watching the defense harder the last year or two... whenever it was he was promoted. Dungy hinted at this midseason. I am a huge Colts fan, a huge Dungy fan, and I gotta tell ya... Dungy is even leaving with style and class. He has been preping his replacement. And Dungy's heart lies in the charity work now.
I think no matter what he says, if you look at his amazing record he still left on top. - Wreckage, on 01/12/2009, -2/+6Please, please, please, please, please come to Detroit.
- JSharkey, on 01/12/2009, -1/+5Here in Indianapolis the mood is one of joyful sadness. We all wish Tony would stay another year but understand why he is leaving. A good man and a great coach, it was a pleasure and a joy to have him as the head coach of the Colts.
- sidewinderaim9x, on 01/12/2009, -1/+4A well-deserved retirement. My hat goes off to you Mr. Dungy.
- orthodoxDrew, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3thanks coach dungy
(i hope maybe we can stop the run next year) - kenedamick, on 01/12/2009, -2/+5Burying a guy for politely saying that he doesn't share Dungy's religious beliefs? Oh I forgot, Christians are always right and everyone else is burning in hell.
I agree with Icaz - quality human being and a great coach and that's coming from a man who hates the Colts. - FATROCK56, on 01/12/2009, -3/+6Great Man of God. He will be missed. But I believe he will continue to inspire, even if it not on the GRIDIRON.
God Speed. - conebone69, on 03/02/2009, -1/+4Respect.
One of the better people to ever be involved in football. One of the classiest people I've ever seen in my lifetime. - drqshadow, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Maybe they're Gruden fans...
- Ugoff, on 01/12/2009, -3/+6No, Dungy is a really nice guy, and doesn't stoop to cheating. I'm glad karma bit the Pats in the ass this year.
- DinosWillDie13, on 01/12/2009, -1/+4pretty amazing, that literally every comment in here was positive. Shows how true they really are. thanks for the past 7 years coach Dungy!
- soupcan58, on 01/12/2009, -2/+5We're gonna miss Dungy here in Indiana... let's hope the Colt's don't go the way of the Pacers after they lost Reggie Miller.
- twignificant, on 01/12/2009, -1/+4Tony was always high class.
- endustry, on 01/12/2009, -1/+4Bummer. The guy just comes off as one of the nicest, classiest cats ever.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -4/+6He'll be coaching somewhere else in a few years. Although I don't share his religious beliefs you really can't do anything but admire the guy. His devotion to other people and his quiet determination are an example we could all learn from. If he doesn't come back to football I wish him nothing but the best of luck. I'll never forgive the Glazers for letting him go and bringing in that failure they call Gruden.
