Packers GM, coach deny Brett Favre's request for release
news.yahoo.com — The Packers aren't about to let Brett Favre become a free agent. And while he's now free to return to Green Bay for another season, there's no guarantee he'll be the Packers' starting quarterback if he does.

- Michiko280, on 07/13/2008, -5/+18I never would have guessed Farve would have thrust himself in the center of so much drama! I have to admit though, it would be horrible to see him playing for anyone other than the packers.
- mk3k, on 07/14/2008, -3/+1I weep silent tears.
Seriously, they are more mercenaries than noble warriors.- DyceFreak, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1too bad he's a mercenary with a contract... He sold his life away and now he's stuck.
- xtinamo, on 07/14/2008, -2/+3If he does go to another team, it would at least give me an excuse to get excited about another game/team. My only fear would be that his team either beats us in a game, or goes on to win the superbowl.
- mk3k, on 07/14/2008, -3/+1I weep silent tears.
- tenabobina, on 07/13/2008, -13/+1Brett Favre IS Green Bay. They should just let him retire then they won't have to worry about losing to him on a different team.
- jdunlop2179, on 07/14/2008, -2/+8They let him retire.... Brett Favre is the one who wants to reunite.
- zenerdiode, on 07/14/2008, -2/+3If only he would retire. Or stay retired, that is.
Oh and Lombardi is Green Bay. The Frozen Tundra is Green Bay. The cheeseheads are/is Green Bay. Favre is great, but he's not the only thing that makes Green Bay great.- davekoob, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4As being a former Green Bay and Appleton resident...
Well said... Well said...
I love Sundays in Titletown and I love my former home, but it wasn't all just about Brett Favre.
- davekoob, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4As being a former Green Bay and Appleton resident...
- akamurph, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2LOL Thanks for the laugh tenabobina :) drift away from digg.com sometimes, maybe to ESPN and read what's really going on.
- Scottievm, on 07/13/2008, -5/+2This guy just keeps going and going...
- aabernathy, on 07/14/2008, -6/+20It would be a slap in the face to the franchise if Favre got his release then joined another team. Its smart for them to at least deny his request and possibly get a trade out of it if he does choose to continue playing with another team.
I'm not sure why he would want to play for anyone other than the Packers.....- hughesj919, on 07/14/2008, -2/+2So he could start. Obviously.
- akatherder, on 07/14/2008, -3/+11Send him to Detroit. He'll be begging to retire by week 3.
- GuertyMof, on 07/14/2008, -2/+1DO NOT WANT. I'd rather deal with a ***** team than the local media sucking Favre off every Sunday.
You're right though. He wouldn't last a month.
- GuertyMof, on 07/14/2008, -2/+1DO NOT WANT. I'd rather deal with a ***** team than the local media sucking Favre off every Sunday.
- Fleagleman, on 07/14/2008, -7/+4There's no guarantee my arse. If Favre comes back, and is NOT released, he's the starter. Bank on it. Any other quotes that hit the media are "fluff and bluff" from the head office.
- theragu40, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1Not from Green Bay, are you?
- Ub3rg33k, on 07/14/2008, -5/+6I thought he said he was retiring at the end of last season?
- aaronwolfe, on 07/14/2008, -5/+10Stay at home Brett, please.
- Shagmire, on 07/14/2008, -2/+10He's also great in "There's Something About Mary"
- dustinhansen, on 07/14/2008, -10/+3BREYHT!!! (in finest Wisconsin accent) You're breaking my heart here donchano!!
- cgruber, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1You are not from Wisconsin.
- dustinhansen, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1Actually I am.
- cgruber, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1You are not from Wisconsin.
- pableaux, on 07/14/2008, -8/+2Waaah! We're so conflicted! Legendary Brett Favre wants to come back & lead our team to the Superbowl, just when we were getting ready to get our asses whipped this season while our nobody QB learns the ropes. How horrible for us! What a major dilemma! What do we DO?
- nojingoist, on 07/14/2008, -9/+4This guy is so overrated it's funny. Another dumb INT by Favre closed out the last season. Time to move on.
- mikebb79, on 07/14/2008, -5/+5*yawn* Tired of this story already.
- listrophy, on 07/14/2008, -2/+9Alleged timeline:
Post-Playoffs: GB office tells Favre they need an answer by March 1.
Early March (3?): "Under pressure to meet the March 1 deadline," Favre announces retirement, but he never signs the requisite papers.
Late March: Favre calls office and says he wants to come back. Office is apparently OK with the idea.
A few days later: Favre decides not to come back.
Late June: Rumors abound of Favre's un-retirement.
Early July: Favre announces he wants to come back. GB Office is annoyed: they've spent time on Aaron Rodgers and draft picks to make up for Favre's retirement.
A few days later: Favre, sensing hostility, asks for unconditional release. Denied.
The whole time: Wisconsin AM sports radio forgets to cover Brewers, Bucks, and pre-Olympics news.- Nikkon2131, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1The Bucks...hah.
- theragu40, on 07/14/2008, -1/+1Pretty accurate, although I'm pretty sure he eventually did sign the official retirement papers...which means before he's even *allowed* to come back, he needs to get approval from the NFL commissioner. Not that he won't/wouldn't get it, but it is another hoop to jump through.
- Disgod, on 07/14/2008, -3/+6He did the right thing retiring last year. Why the hell does he want to come back? He had a hell of a run last season, but who honestly thinks he's got what it takes to get them back again. Don't get me wrong I think Farve was a great quarterback, but it's better to quit while he's ahead rather than go down slowly and screw up his legacy.
I do understand his desire to come back though, but if he goes to another team it'll probably just end badly. I would laugh my ass off if he went to Da Bear, he'd still be better than the Grossman. I guess I'd rather like that, I'm a bears fan, but Grossman sucks so terribly bad. But I still think he should stay retired. - GuertyMof, on 07/14/2008, -10/+3Brett Favre is an over-hyped piece of GARBAGE. You can't turn on a single sports game (football, hockey, basketball etc.) without hearing an ***** commentator liken a player to Brett Favre.
Green Bay will be lucky if all this time that Aaron Rodgers has sat the bench (due to Brett's "I'm retiring... oh wait! I want to play!" *****) hasn't turned him stagnant.
tl;dr: Brett should die in a plane crash.- lazyc0mmunist, on 07/14/2008, -2/+0Someone is a Bears fan.
- GuertyMof, on 07/14/2008, -3/+2Not at all. I'm from Detroit and I'm only a Lions fan because I'm obligated to be. He should've retired many moons ago (like while he was actually good).
- lazyc0mmunist, on 07/14/2008, -2/+0Someone is a Bears fan.
- neoq36, on 07/14/2008, -4/+2as a slap in the face Favre should sign with the Bears
- randyzaia, on 07/14/2008, -8/+5What an annoying ***** attention whore. "Am I retiring or not? Oh I'm retiring ~sob~...but wait, I'm coming back!!! Oh, it's so unfair you won't release me so I can play for one of your rivals!" STFU
- Astheria, on 07/14/2008, -4/+8You have a three time MVP, Super Bowl winning quarterback who had a career season and was one drive away from the Super Bowl last year, he's been with you for a decade and a half, holds almost all major passing records... and you're going to slap him in the face and say "No thanks Mr. Favre, we're going to play this injury prone unproven kid, because it's the last year of his contract."
***** you Packers organization, the fans want Brett back as the starting QB and you'd be fools to disagree. - sportsstar67, on 07/14/2008, -3/+1Why the hell would they release him when they could trade him and get something for him..Smart management move
- jaydoj, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3So let me get this straight...he retired for the offseason?
- homah, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4OM NOM NOM NOM
/john madden - scottja35, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Favre has turned himself into the villain on this one. I would like someone to explain to me how my Packers are any better off now than they would have been if Brett had just avoided retirement and pranced around the issue, giving a half-hearted agreement to play. If he changed his mind, he could bail at the last minute, leaving only Packers fans to be disappointed.
We could have avoided this whole mess and never even known that his decision had wavered and, most importantly, Brett would still be our quarterback. - scottja35, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Catch Brett tonight on Greta Van Susteren and hopefully he can sort this all out without vilifying the Packers organization.
- jetblackz4, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2I would love for him to come to the Bears.
We need a veteran QB like him.
Rex sucks and I do not have much faith in Orton. - iamnobody8614, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I'm a Packer fan for life and as great as it would be to see Brett to return to the helm, if he wants to go, let him go. He has earned the right to go where he pleases. Favre realized that he can't do anymore with the Packers and that he needs to move on to a team that could really use a leader (Packers GM has been ignoring him for years), just like Reggie White did back when he joined the Panthers.
- troyfoley, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1yes. and what a glorious reign in carolina that was.
- blueandgreen24, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2How weird would it be to see Favre playing for the Vikings?
- mychaleg, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1If he wants to come back, don't release him. Bench him. He needs to stick to his word and stop messing with fans and teammates. He's not ever going to come as close as he last did last year to another championship, especially with another team. So basically that means he wants some team to sacrifice just so he can go sling the ball around some more. Selfish!
- sapphire9488, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1It would be really strange to see him playing in anything else but green & gold.
- MeatPlow, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0It was strange. He started out playing for the Falcons I think.
- troyfoley, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I can't help thinking about the overtime choke interceptions in the playoffs... Philadelphia in 2003... The Giants last year.
And for anyone saying "how could the Packers do this to him", he's the one who chose to retire. No one was "pressuring him" as he claims. Hell, he's taken his precious time for the last three seasons, why would this year be so different?
The only part I don't agree with is the Packers saying he would come in as a backup, though they may mean simply on the depth chart. In that case he would have to battle for the starting position, which is completely fair.
Green Bay Packers > Brett Favre
