- hhlodesign, on 12/03/2007, -5/+59This is exactly why we need a playoff! If I was making the rules, we would have an 8 team playoff with the following teams getting in:
1. Pac10 Champ - USC
2. Big10 Champ - OSU
3. Big12 Champ - Oklahoma
4. SEC Champ - LSU
5. ACC Champ - Virginia Tech
6. Big East Champ - West Virginia
7. Highest ranked non-BCS team - Hawaii
8. Highest BCS ranked team not already in - probably Georgia
Everyone complains that a playoff system would make the regular season meaningless. In this system, the regular system is still just as important because it's all about winning your conference. The minor conferences (and ND) get a guaranteed spot, and even one wild card for a team that didn't win their conference.
They would be seeded according to their final BCS rankings.
The first 4 games (Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta) would happen 2 weeks after Championship saturday (Dec. 15th this year). 2 semi-final games would happen on New Year's Day. The Championship game would be the weekend before the Super Bowl. The Semi-final and Championship games would rotate between the 4 major bowls. The bowl that had the Championship game the previous year would not have a semi-or Championship game the following year.
This keeps the current bowl system intact; only 2 additional games are added to the current system; It leaves at least 2 weeks for fans to make travel arrangements if their school advances; and it would create the most exciting sports tournament in the history of America. - geodanny, on 12/03/2007, -21/+48Time for a playoff. What other sport in the World crowns a champion with an arbitrary selection by people and computers without a head-to-head matchup? It doesn’t happen.
Unfortunately, there are no financial incentives to change how things are. That is, until fans provide them. So I’m calling for a fan boycott. Yes, a fan boycott.
Boycott: How it will work:
* Refuse to purchase any memorabilia or merchandise that has a logo of any college that participates in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (list here). Also refuse to purchase any tickets to football games, including bowl games. I will not buy any more Trojan Gear until a playoff is installed. The ultimate decision is up to the school presidents of the big six leagues.
* Contact companies that sponsor your football team, the league they compete in, and the bowl games to declare your opposition to the bowl system and
* Target one specific company: All State
o Contact its Customer Care (1-800-All-State) and lodge your dissatisfaction with its sponsoring the Title Game and request it pressure the NCAA to form a football playoff it sponsors instead.
o Companies are very concerned about image and a few thousand calls regarding its sponsorship will make it take notice.
* Refuse to watch the games. If anyone has power to convince schools, it is the TV networks that paid beaucoup bucks to broadcast the games. They depend on advertising revenue based on the number of “eyeballs” watching the broadcast. If those “eyeballs” were to not show up … - 8ight, on 12/03/2007, -3/+29It's been said a million times... but the Bowl Championship Series is a disaster. Year after year it's the same thing.
- YoungDeezy, on 12/03/2007, -4/+23Why does everybody hate Ohio State so much?
- ncraig, on 12/03/2007, -4/+22i still cant believe WVU lost...
- pbfreak453, on 12/03/2007, -3/+16Kind of strange that they had Virginia Tech in front of LSU last week, and after Tech played a better ranked team, and earned a victory by more points, they decided that THEN was the time that LSU was better, while the loss to LSU obviously had no weight during the previous week...
- Durinthal, on 12/03/2007, -2/+15That.. doesn't really work. You're still saying the word *****.
- badqat, on 12/03/2007, -30/+42Oh, come on now...what's better than getting to see The Ohio State University lose another national championship game?
- rberger909, on 12/03/2007, -1/+12I'm not even an Ohio fan but I am for this game...no way in the world LSU should be in there! Hands down LSU (win-loss/score wise for you LSU fans out there...I know they are a phyically tough team but there weren't handling their business on the field in my opinion) is the weakest team in the championship game in recent memory. Georgia should have been in the BCS championship game...Yeah they didn't win the SEC, I know! The rules don't require that though to get to the BCS championship game. A jump from 7 to 2? Get out of here with that *****! Everyone here knows that kind of jump should never happen, especially a jump over idle teams off a 21-14 win...yeah if you blew out the #1 ranked team you might see a good jump (not even then would you jump 5 spots though)...this is just preposterous and changed me from a fence sitter on the issue of a play off series to firmly in the camp that a playoff system is needed.
- cam18, on 12/03/2007, -0/+10That idea actually makes sense so there's a 0% chance of that actually happening.
- Mast3rDigg3r, on 12/03/2007, -2/+11wow I didn't know there were so many ncaa football experts on digg
- wtfersk8s, on 12/03/2007, -6/+14Mizzou gets the biggest shaft EVER. They've beat 2 teams in the bcs games(Illinois/KU) and we get left out. WTF
- Y2JCrisis, on 12/03/2007, -6/+14Overrated.
- swordedge, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8Make it 16 teams with the 11 division winners plus 5 at large. Then UH would get a chance to play for the title. No matter what your opinion of UH's ability, unbeaten is unbeaten and the lack of proper play off severely hurts them.
- rhabd0mancer, on 12/03/2007, -4/+12Will you still be laughing when you get jackslapped by USC?
- mwolfzorn, on 12/03/2007, -1/+8A loss is a loss be it in triple over time or in regulation. A good team shouldn't get itself in the situation where you need to go into overtime to win once in a season, much less twice.
- wiihuck, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7who did that happen to?
LSU lost two conference games. ohio state's only loss was in conference. oklahoma's only two losses were conference. same with georgia. same with USC. you have to get to Va Tech before you get to a team with a non-conference loss. - carcrazy, on 12/03/2007, -15/+22O H
- Harbinger67, on 12/03/2007, -2/+9I call for a boycott of positive diggs on this comment. I'll start.
- Orlong, on 12/03/2007, -8/+15What a bunch of crap. Ohio State played nobodies all year, LSU lost twice and only won by an ass hair about 6 other times. They shouldnt even be in the top 10. Of Course Hawaii got screwed again. People say they dont play anyone but its hard when nobody wants to play them either.
- carcrazy, on 12/03/2007, -11/+18I-O!
We're going to do it this year! - inactive, on 12/03/2007, -2/+9Mizzou looked like crap last night. Not even worth watching. You have that big of a game and you play like a bunch practice squad cheerleaders. You deserve nothing!
- dagamer34, on 12/03/2007, -3/+10When not playing is what gets you to the top spot, that's when you know something is wrong. Heck, whenever computers are involved, it's bound to be broken.
- CarolinaHeel23, on 12/03/2007, -33/+40GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!
- YoungDeezy, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7Chase Daniel eats his boogers.
- CanIGetAWitness, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7Don't know why the talking heads were so unsure how it would end up. The final week really made the call.
- Shawn4168, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6I always make it a point to buy gas on those days.
- 1mabu77fac3, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7hawaii plays at florida next year during the second week. who wants to bet they dont keep their perfect record.
- atbnet, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6I know I was gunning for you guys. I wouldn't in a million years imagine Pitt would win. And was Slaton hurt? He only ran 9 times. What's up with that?
- akatherder, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6Let me sum up every comment.
BCS sucks! We need "some sort" of playoff system! Should have been X in the Widget Bowl instead of Y! - RevJonathan, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7College football is the best sport on TV hands down.
- bobdigi, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7This is like FW: FW: FW: HEY GUYS DONT BUY GAS ON TUESDAY AND THE OIL COMPANIES WILL LOSE ZILLIONS OF DOLLARS
- TheBigBad, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5People hate OSU because you make for a boring championship game. You got blown out by Florida last year and you'll get blown out by LSU this year. The Big Ten is overrated. You lost at home to a mediocre Illinois team (that will get crushed by USC in the Rose). You backed your way into the championship. You have the most pompous fans in all of college football (THE Ohio State University, puh-lease). Your football program cheats (Maurice Clarrett among many). Need I continue?
- pbfreak453, on 12/03/2007, -1/+6Also, for both of you...just take a look at the computer poll...the numbers don't lie, every other poll is just a stupid pissing/popularity contest. When you look at the numbers, VT is the best team in the nation right now.
- tatinthehat, on 12/03/2007, -1/+6Go to a therapist, much?
- cam18, on 12/03/2007, -3/+8"Who cares about a national championship."
Every other division of college football. - RyanHCO, on 12/03/2007, -10/+15OSU - somehow went from 5 to 1 in two weeks without playing a game.
LSU - won the SEC championship - barely - and scraped by at least 3 other teams. Lost to 2 underdog teams in triple overtime
Oklahoma - Defeated a "pretender" #1 team of Mizzou and managed to jump 6 spots to #3 ("pretender directly from crazy Lee Corso)
UGA - Defeated the final 6 teams with no loss, and by large points. Defeated former nat'l champs the Gators by 12 points, defeated powerhouse Auburn by 25. UGA is 4 - 0 versus ranked teams this season. Most of the top 10 teams dont even play 4 ranked teams in an entire season.
USC - Lost to Stanford. Please.
Mizzou - A weak schedule breeds a high ranking. Check the stats; they played 4 ranked teams all year. 2 of them were #24 and #25. The other two were both Oklahoma and they lost to both. They have been a joke from day 1. Great offense, yes, but they don't have the clout to contend with the real contenders.
Kansas - An even bigger joke. Two ranked teams were played all year. One was ranked 24. The other was #4 Mizzou who handled them all over the field.
The BCS is a joke. I'm a huge UGA fan and graduate, so I'm obviously looking through a certain point of view, but these schedule strengths certainly make a team. UGA has my vote. I just wish it counted. - cuervoman914, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5the rapist?
- xaxxon, on 12/03/2007, -10/+15Because they take a spot from a deserving team by playing in a conference devoid of talent.
- kedohmen, on 12/03/2007, -6/+11GO BUCKS!
I'll be driving down to The Big Easy to tailgate my face off, anyone else coming? We could have a Digg meet up! - Kbriggs, on 12/03/2007, -2/+7Georgia....blown out by TN.......TN lost to LSU.....I'm not sure what you don't understand.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5A good team shouldn't get easy as ***** schedules and lose to Illinois. And by that reasoning, you can look at all the close wins the top teams have had and count them as situations that could have easily been losses as they were wins.
- imnojezus, on 12/03/2007, -12/+17LSU doesn't deserve to be there. I hope Ohio State ***** all over them.
- dark1587, on 12/03/2007, -5/+10Heh. No love for OSU, which isn't new for us. I just hope we perform better than last year and shut the SEC fanboys up... and bring a little pride back to the Big Ten.
- pbfreak453, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4I agree. Playoffs.
- RevJonathan, on 12/03/2007, -1/+5I hate Florida, but yeah, Tebow's gonna tear that "defense" apart.
- 1mabu77fac3, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4my bad, actually they open against florida.
- rberger909, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4Amen to that!!
- cam18, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4Everyone says it a million times...but it falls on deaf ears
- sgtbutterscotch, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4I would have to say that this year is the poster-year for its terribleness.
