- randylm, on 02/28/2009, -2/+49Chiefs get Cassel and Vrabel. Patriots get the 34th pick in this year's draft. Am I missing something here? Sucky deal
- tcquad, on 02/28/2009, -1/+22Well, Cassell earned his franchise tag thanks to the Chiefs (after Pollard took out Brady's knee in the opener), so it seems fitting that he'd end up there.
- JingleHymrShmit, on 03/01/2009, -3/+21I thought Thigpen had potential...
- zioxide, on 03/01/2009, -0/+16Mike Vrabel is old and was awful last year. He's no longer the player he was a few years ago. The Pats defense needs to keep getting younger, and getting rid of Vrabel is just part of that. This move saves a bunch of cap space, and since he would be a FA next year anyways, gets them some compensation for him.
There really was no market for Cassel, so getting the 35th overall pick and freeing up $20 mil in cap space is a pretty good deal. - TheJimid, on 02/28/2009, -2/+17Our Linebacking core could not afford to lose Mike Vrabel. I thought we would be getting something a lot better for Cassel then a second round draft pick. I can't believe we lost both of them.
- AoiTakuma, on 03/01/2009, -3/+18As a Chiefs' fan living in New England I approve this trade
- GoKings, on 03/01/2009, -1/+13Cassel went to my high school when I was a freshman and sophmore. Dude got more ass than a toilet seat.
- Nouman6, on 03/01/2009, -0/+12he's gay?
- zioxide, on 03/01/2009, -0/+9Then they put in a new backup? Cassel is a complete product of that system.. he's easy to replace, and they can't afford to pay him $14 million to be Brady's backup. That's way too much of a cap hit.
- cathpah, on 03/01/2009, -0/+8and you forget how much better Tom Brady turned out to be than the average pick in that draft spot.
- TheManikin, on 03/01/2009, -0/+7I have a feeling that Pioli might not get booed as much as King Carl did the past couple years.
- PhillAholic, on 03/01/2009, -1/+7It's probably just *****. Didn't they list Brady as hurt for every game 2 seasons ago?
- FlaG8r, on 03/01/2009, -0/+6I think you mean Carson Palmer instead of Chad Pennington.
- djholybolt, on 03/01/2009, -0/+6WHAT CRACK ARE YOU SMOKING?
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+6So larry johnson is washed up but marvin harrison isn't?
- JermTool, on 03/01/2009, -1/+7Stupid question considering Digg.com does not solely pertain to technology. This article would be filed under the, "sports," category, had it been technology related it'd be filed under, "technology."
- ike6116, on 03/01/2009, -2/+8This is the Bilichik regime taking care of it's own. You're welcome Scott Pioli. Hope you've learned something Eric Hamgini
- Ghengis, on 03/01/2009, -7/+12It should read, "Matt Cassel Takes Off-Ramp to Oblivion"
- rwiggum, on 03/01/2009, -2/+7As a lifelong Chiefs fan, this story makes me very, VERY happy.
- ell0bo, on 03/01/2009, -0/+4no, just really enjoys anal.
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+4I got some ass from a toilet seat once. Feels bad, man.
- FlaG8r, on 03/01/2009, -0/+4No GM was going to give a #1 for Cassel. They've all been around long enough to remember Scott Mitchell.
- SillyRabbits, on 03/01/2009, -1/+5On the surface it looks like a bad deal for the Patriots, but I think on closer inspection it's all about the salary cap. I think KC got a decent deal on Cassell because they agreed to take an expensive Vrabel off of the Patriots hands. That really gives the Patriots a lot of room to focus on other areas. In a non-salary capped world I'm sure the Patriots would have loved to keep them both, but with the cap the resources could be put to better use.
- BugsSport, on 03/01/2009, -1/+5Yes, but you forget where Tom Brady was drafted...
- turtlegroove, on 03/01/2009, -0/+3The Pats couldnt keep Cassel at 14.6 mil. That would be almost 30 mil against the cap just for your QB's! When they franchised him they had every intention of trading him. Belichick is the master. He wouldnt trade Cassel if there was any doubt about Brady (or his new backup Kevin O'Connell)
- DaRizat, on 03/01/2009, -1/+4Guess Belichick was feeling generous to his old homeboy Pioli.
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+3i was thinking that myself, but vrabel wasn't too great last year. he's replaceable now.
- SillyRabbits, on 03/01/2009, -0/+3They did, not only did they get a second round pick, they got back Vrabel's portion of the salary cap. Those two things combined is probably worth a lot more than a 1st round pick.
- J3553, on 03/01/2009, -2/+5cassel will suck in KC. i thought everyone learned last year that any QB can look good behind that patriots o-line. give me 12 seconds to throw the ball, and i'll look like a stud too.
- J3553, on 03/01/2009, -0/+3...touche
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2guess you didnt watch superbowl 42
- FlaG8r, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2Harrison looked awful last year.
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2funny he's playing for them now since they're the ones that technically started his career by hurting TFB.
- Vespa299, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2As a long time KC fan I am excited!! They have a young team and need a man with experience. So glad to see DT finally get inducted into the Hall of Fame! Can't wait until next year!
- fishpicker, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2Vrabel was thrown in there because the Chiefs were willing to part with a second but not a first. The Pats get more cap room in exchange for taking a worse draft pick. Vrabel has 2 or 3 years left and he is going to eat a lot of cap-space.
- hawksfan03, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2are you kidding me? thigpen was one of the few semi-consistent players for the chiefs last year. his FIRST year as a starter and he only started 8ish games last year. give the kid a chance. not to mention he was top 40 rushing in the nfl after only playing in 12 or so game as a QB.
- fishpicker, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2I agree with you in regards to thigpen. he was a bit more survivable than the other KC QBs since he could scramble (which is why I think he will be replacing Cassel in mid season) But the main thing is the KC o-line is very bad. the bright spot was the left side but then again, Waters is probably on his way out.
whoever takes snaps behind that line better be able to run. - rwiggum, on 03/01/2009, -1/+3I agree, he showed a whole lot of growth last year. And technically, there's no guarantee that Cassel will be starting (though it's very likely that he will). Still, At least our first two strings will be strong.
- banshee90, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2Maybe they are trying to free up salary cap to get Marvin Harrison or a good running back
- cleric04, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2Guess the Vikings didn't need a quarterback.
- FlaG8r, on 03/01/2009, -0/+2The Eagles were #6 in passing yards last year. A stud WR would be nice, but they don't need one as badly as a lot of people think.
- cadmiumpaint, on 03/02/2009, -0/+1The problem with the NFL is that contenders don't want high draft pics. The agents have set up precedent that some kid right out of college in the top 10 gets ridiculous cash. The differential in talent between #3 overall and #34 isn't big enough to justify handcuffing your contending franchise with a giant contract on a risky bet.
- matt.rubin, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1meh i am hopping he comes back but just not as good. Boston is too good at sports man.
You guys gave away matt cassel who took the team basically to the play off running. Then we don't even know the status of brady. I remember hearing he was behind in his rehab. Hell we lost Shawn Merriam last season. Tore his PCL. We are both in the same situation my friend, if merriman comes back from his knee our D is going to stop the run again.
Just saying people are not treating the rivaly of the chargers and the patriots enough credit. Its a close ass one. Especially when patriots blew it to the giants. 14 point underdogs come on man. I think if chargers were in it we would have won. LT was at his prime and giants stopped your run due to lack of decent backs. - hawksfan03, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1i agree but for a 2nd round pick this is a steal. thigpen is a pretty good runner so i'd be surprised if they don't run a lot of wildcat this year
- phyx726, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1thigpen made gonzo the most dominate TE again last season.
- mojofomoro, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1Cassel did a good job in New england and yes this is a strange trade
- RyFo18, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1The first rounder would have costed them just about as much as Cassel....
- rillo561, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1LOL @ "proven QB "
- Barr08, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1They're freeing up money in the budget for Ray Lewis
- dirrtydirrty, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1Since Cassel had the franchise tag and was then traded to KC, does that mean his contract with KC is only for one year at $14.65 million?
