- vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -3/+33The Madden cures is indeed real. There was a reason LaDanian Tomlinson turned down the cover 3 years is a row.
- DiggerDave08, on 12/31/2008, -0/+26Culpepper got it the worst!! No one should ever have to go from the game cover to the lions!!
- dreamweaver1984, on 12/31/2008, -0/+25mabye they scribbled tom bradys picture behind favre secrertly...
- thegamingguy, on 12/31/2008, -0/+20I am not declaring my fantasy keepers until the next cover athlete is picked.
- TheNyquilKid, on 12/31/2008, -1/+18To clear it up, he is a defensive end for the Chargers. Not 2nd basemen for the Mets.
- GoKings, on 12/31/2008, -0/+13Vince Young has got to be higher... The dude went from the cover, to an emotional breakdown and losing his starting job to a 38 year old who is now leading his team to the best record in football.
- irfanmp, on 12/31/2008, -0/+13Also, starting from 2008, Madden had different cover athletes for the Spanish version of the game. Luis Castillo was the cover athlete for 2008. He suffered an ankle injury which forced him to miss 6 games and his stats were drastically reduced from the previous year.
- gonorea007, on 12/31/2008, -0/+12I never believed in the curse as more than coincidence until this year. When I first fired up Madden '09, I immediately noticed Ed Hochule's face as the ingame ref. Since, he's blown two major game calls and dodging death threats in his hometown of San D. Wow, the Madden curse even extends to refs...
M - SnuKs, on 12/31/2008, -1/+10I love how people say the curse isn't real. Wait until they're favorite player is on it and see how scared they get..
- hysonmb, on 12/31/2008, -0/+8Now if only they could put Al Davis on the cover.... yes, I'm a Raiders fan.
- griffeycom, on 12/31/2008, -0/+8The Little Giants taught me that.
- vinceislegend, on 12/31/2008, -0/+7BOOM!
- NJank, on 12/31/2008, -0/+7yeah, but have you seen his bus? I'd stay on the ground too.
- jboitnott, on 12/31/2008, -0/+6Aww Garrison Hearst. That brought me back for like two seconds to the semi-decent Mariucci 49ers teams of the late 90s-early 2000s. They haven't been good since. (At least not until Singletary came on the scene.)
- TheBishopOfSoho, on 12/31/2008, -0/+6Its not a curse. Think about this. Players tend to play in cycles of playing crap and then hitting form, than back again, some good players hit great, even amazing form, and they tend, after a season or 2 of this form without injury, to get featured on Sports Illustrated or Game covers, but this is usually at the end of their peak performance curve (Or they get injured), so its only to be expected that a player will fall from that peak. Its not a curse. Its how sports and human physiology/psychology on the sports field works. A player cant be the greatest player on the field for all 10-15 years of his career. That would make sport boring.
- ThadeousMan, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5If the Madden curse and the Chunky soup curse are both real, is it possible that John Madden is actually made of Chunky soup?
- vizeroth, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5People also tend to get careless when they have a period of good performance, which makes them more inclined to get injured when they're in a sport with a fairly high rate of injuries. There's also the subconscious effect that fame might have on other players, who may be more inclined to focus their attention on the other team's "star" player.
- Shawn4168, on 12/31/2008, -1/+6There's a Madden cure for the Madden curse? Thank goodness!
- Fleagleman, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4This is common knowledge, but whatever.
- dcmcderm, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4I hate websites with a dark background - they always leave an afterimage on my eyesight which makes it difficult to come back to the digg comment sections (with it's white background).
- BillDauterive, on 12/31/2008, -2/+6Did you know that John Madden is afraid of flying and travels everywhere by bus?
- OCDMedic, on 01/01/2009, -0/+4The person in the article obviously is not familiar with football. Ray Lewis is not PROBABLY in the mist of a Hall of Fame career, he is a lock for the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. He could have retired a couple of years ago and still have gotten in. Also Shaun Alexander is not coming back to previous form. Everyone knows when running backs hit 30 they decline very rapidly so it's not a big surprise that Faulk and George went downhill. Also they are both going to make the HoF.
- gonorea007, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Dono which to believe more...wikipedia, SI, or ESPN. Not being glib, I read that he was being heckled in his hometown grocery store in San D. I'd look for article but that's work. I just like the fact that a anthropomorphic ref = curse.
M - vertigo32, on 12/31/2008, -1/+4It's called regression to the mean. There is nothing supernatural or abnormal about it.
Most likely, out of the people who had an abnormally good season, the one who goes on the cover won't follow it with another abnormally good season. Not to mention that after a player has that standout season, their opponents are going to defend against them or focus on them more than if they hadn't just stood out.
There are very few athletes like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods who can consistently be at the top of their game year after year, especially in a sport like Football where a huge part of a great season is simply not getting injured. - smmakira, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Anything involving John Madden is a curse.
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Have you seen the man? I think Pat Summerall left Madden's booth because he couldn't take the scent of Chunky Sirloin anymore!
- lastmaster, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3The real curse is on the madden video game PLAYERS having to listen to John's commentaries for the past few years.
- Homest4r, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3I knew Farve was going to fall. Everybody made the excuse "Nooo he's in a Packers jersey, the curse won't work this year". It doesn't matter. The curse struck again last Sunday; Farve failed to lead his team into the playoffs and fell apart during the end of the season.
The Madden curse is indeed real... (thank god none of the Giants players took it after they won the Super Bowl) - stevehanler, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3The Madden Curse is a joke:
http://www.snopes.com/sports/football/maddencurse. ... - Fleagleman, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Injuries are very iffy and I think are just ways of keeping ther curse streak alive. If you ask any NFL player, they'll tell you that just about everyone gets injured at least once during an NFL season. If you don't learn to play through pain, then you basically lose your job.
Too many key players get injured in a given year, any of which could've ended up on the cover of Madden. This is not coincidence--this is just the nature of the game. - justjoehere, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Including making $$$ from licensing his names to video games. Those people don't seem cursed.
- sKiLLa182, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Adrian Peterson should be on the cover! The curse is BS, btw. I imagine this story might be a little more interesting if Brady was on the cover this year.
- OzzieAlThor, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Eddie George and Favre are a bit of a stretch. George was getting old already as he was the workhorse of the Titans and his production really didn't drop off till the next year. He still had almost 1,000 yards that "down" year.
Favre falls apart just about every year for the last 5 or so when it matters. He was still productive enough that his team was in the hunt. If the Jets were in the NFC they might have won a division. His TD/INT ratio has been this way for YEARS. Link:http://www.nfl.com/players/brettfavre/profile?id=F ... He is either + 12 or he just looks stupid.
Every other one is right on. No arguing them. - StarofTroy, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2San D? you must not be from here. And neither is Ed Hoculi.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Hochuli#Early_life - bloggerjul, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2On a side note, there's also an NBA LIVE curse as well.... (another EA game)
- AeriykTheRed, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2Unbelievable. Between this and the Super Bowl Loser hangover you'd think that the NFL has witch doctors on duty.
- Trenchbroom, on 01/01/2009, -0/+2The Seahawks fan in me is nodding his head in complete agreement...
- Coolkidchris, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2I feel ya man. Hearst had the nastiest stiff arm ever. I thought it was such a dumb decision to fire mariucci
- Thekirby45, on 01/01/2009, -0/+2Oh how Vince Young fallen.
I still say he is not ready to play starter next year after seeing him play in the indy game - johndavidjack, on 12/31/2008, -1/+2Also had pictures taken of him at a gay club...
- johndavidjack, on 12/31/2008, -1/+2He's a pussy, and he sucks.
- explodingonion, on 12/31/2008, -4/+5This seems less evidence of a curse than evidence that football players get injured a lot. Pick any player who gets a lot of game time and its almost guaranteed that they will sustain at least some sort of injury that year.
- shootermcgavn, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1Part of it is regression to the mean, part of it is that by the time a player is good enough to grace the cover they are in their peak years/have already peaked and are coming down, but the number of serious/career threatening injuries that have occurred to players who were put on the cover is very unusual.
A lot of people claim that the injuries are due simply to the fact that they play football, but typical football injuries such as strained muscles, high ankle sprains, sprained ligaments and the such are nowhere near as severe as ACL tears, broken ankles, broken bones, etc... that seem to plague Madden cover players. - aceakm, on 12/31/2008, -1/+2I wish Shaun Alexander would get another shot. I can't believe he's a 3rd string RB right now.
- FoxyVin, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1The article said the effects of the curse on Favre was his interceptions and his injury... I thought the effect was being on the Jets.
The article made a good point about Faulk; even though his career did veer off after the cover, he will most likely make it to the Hall. What an astounding running back. - Sford923, on 01/01/2009, -0/+1Eddie George had the best season of his career the year he was on the cover of Madden. And Favre turned a 4 - 12 team into a 9 - 7 team. He didn't have the best year of his career or anything, but he did pass for 3400 yards and 22 TDs. Certainly not a bad year. I don't really think either of them should be on this list.
- warbrain, on 12/31/2008, -1/+2He sucks...plain and simple.
- SreyaNotfilc, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1This is a bit off topic, but here you go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1v52f1TrWg (Mad TV : Madden Popcorn Popper) It's the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Madden.
- OnSolThree, on 01/01/2009, -0/+0He's afraid the plane's going to go BOOM?
