Kriegel: Favre just another selfish star
msn.foxsports.com — "The shame is that, in the not so distant past, Favre was the pure guy, the untouchable, the great teammate who played for the love of the game. Now he shows up in training camp having spent the last few days contemplating how much it would have cost the Packers to keep him retired. Green Bay didn't meet his price."

- Naieve, on 08/05/2008, -3/+5Damn people playing for the love of the game and not taking 25 million dollar bribes to retire.
How lame can you get, didn't he get the memo?
This is America, it's not about liking things, it's about dollars.
He shoulda taken the money and every other response is completely un-American.- Idietired, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3Nice work, Naieve ... I see what you did there.
Anybody who's ever played sports (outside of grammar school) knows that love and drive for the game are what make people into stars, not the almighty dollar. Jordan didn't give a damn that he was playing for the Wizards at the end ... he just wanted to play.
Favre has earned the right to do what the hell he wants. When you earn the rings and respect he has, then you can tell him to retire, but you haven't, so don't be a dick. - NachoBusiness, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Arguably Jordan just kept coming back due to his gambling debts though. It's not quite as simple as "he's playing because he loves the game". Marvin Harrison, when he does talk, tells it pretty straight. He says he'd play Sundays for free, but to stay in perfect shape and weight and practice 5 days a week 50 weeks a year (and thus, able to do well on Sunday), that's what he needs the salary for. I think that's a pretty honest assessment. Love of the game is great, but being a pro in today's game is a full time job that can be quite brutal. Love of the game alone isn't enough to tolerate an NFL season.
- Idietired, on 08/05/2008, -1/+0Gambling debts my ass. Hanes has probably paid Jordan more in the last year than the Wizards have in the last decade, and they'd have paid him in less time for MUCH less work.
See, they're called endorsements, and it's why the big sports stars like Jordan and Favre sometimes have large, ridiculous piles of money. Yeah, Favre will get a good salary from the NFL for coming back to work, but if he could triple that salary by holding a can of Pepsi in front of the right camera guy, why the hell would he go back?
You said it yourself, Nacho ... he'll play Sundays for free. Why? Because he doesn't need money, he needs to play because he doesn't have anything else but to sit in his living room and wait for his next tee-time at the club, and for some people, that's not enough.
But you're right about one thing ... he only wants a salary so he can stay in shape to play. If he didn't want to play, he wouldn't need the money, so money is NOT the reason he's coming back. - NachoBusiness, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1Eh you can lose any amount of money through gambling. See John Daley... he's won majors and made millions and lost it all at casinos.
I don't think you understand my point... which entirely was that players who "play for the love of the game" do need the salary because playing pro sports is more than just showing up for a 3-hour game once a week. It involves living your entire life in a very regimented way, and risking severe injury. Nobody would do that for free no matter how much they love the game. So after treating me like a baby for 3 paragraphs, you agreed with my entire point. Ah, Digg.

- Wamzlee, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0Really? I thought being an exclusive rights player meant that Favre would still have to approve the trade himself. The only way the Packers can get rid of him is to either release him or find a team he can trade with.
As Favre said though, he would rather be in Green Bay than anywhere else.- zacharytelschow, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1I've seen other sources as well, but this should do. Third to last paragraph, second sentence.

- MasterTroll, on 08/04/2008, -9/+41I think we're all sick of "I'm retiring... Just kidding"
- Ohill, on 08/04/2008, -2/+9I dont think you know what its like to retire from something you love not because your bored with it but because you feel enormous pressure that you cant lie up to your own standards cause your too old. Football players always (ask any retired football player) feel younger in spring then in winter.
- theragu40, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3The problem is that Favre didn't/doesn't understand that either. But in his position, he *has* to understand that he feels better in the spring than in the winter. And more importantly, he *has* to understand what a ***** position he has put the team in. The fact of the matter is, there is no longer a good way out of this, and it's because Favre couldn't make up his damn mind.
- NachoBusiness, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Then why is Favre the only one who does this season in, season out? Why does he escalate the drama every year like an emo kid with a blog? I realize it's a hard decision but Favre approaches it in textbook attention whore fashion.

- billjimbob, on 08/04/2008, -6/+43I can't blame him for not wanting to retire. He's probably been playing football since he was 5... it's not easy to say, "ok, well I'm just never going to do that again." Especially when you know you're more than physically capable of it.
- lordmike, on 08/04/2008, -10/+11Yeah, well everyone else seems to be able to do it with some class and dignity...
- dafragsta, on 08/04/2008, -0/+15Yeah, Joe Montana totally accepted his backup position with the 49ers and went out with a silent stone face.
- ShakeWell, on 08/05/2008, -1/+6Maybe he should have thought of that before he retired...
- captainh, on 08/05/2008, -2/+4Understandable, yes. But he did say he was going to retire, and he did in fact retire. It's a pretty dick move to go back on your word like that. Especially when an entire NFL team is at stake. The Packers moved on, started planning for the future. So one man is more important than an entire franchise? Granted, he probably is the most important player in team history, but history doesn't take you to the superbowl. The packers are not a good team now because of Favre, they have a lot of other talent and I fear bringing him back for another year will only delay their longer term plans.
I have been a Favre fan my whole life. I want him to go out on a good note, but he might have just missed his chance.- xGeneric, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4I have no idea why you're being dugg down. That's one of the most reasonable responses here.
Farve is a legend. I'm a Patriots fan, but I give that guy all the respect in the world. Between the championships, his highlight reel which is I don't know how long at this point, his overall good attitude, and of course, his iron man record* of consecutive game starts(which is insane considering what a brutal sport football is).
I can understand why he's doing what he's doing. I think he really did want to retire. He thought longer(and more clearly) about retiring, than he has about coming out of his short lived retirement, and it's because Football has been is identity for most of his life. He realizes that he can't take a year off then come back, time doesn't allow for that kind of opportunity. That being said, I think what he's doing is the wrong decision. The team had moved on, made all the decisions without Brett in mind, and prepared to start the season as such. Dragging the team through this kind of ordeal right as they're preparing to start the preseason isn't right, and I think if he thought as long about coming out of "retirement" than he thought about actually retiring, he would agree.
The only way he'll be able to justify this as being anything other than a hastily made selfish decision, is if he puts out one hell of a season. And of course, I'll still be rooting for him. Unless of course it's against the Pats ^_^
*For anyone who doesn't know about that record... to Quote Wikipedia: "Since first being named the starter of the Green Bay Packers before playing the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 27, 1992 Brett Favre never missed a game"
- xGeneric, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4I have no idea why you're being dugg down. That's one of the most reasonable responses here.

- MoralThreat, on 08/04/2008, -8/+8He shouldn't have said he retired then go back on his word.
If I was to tell my boss tomorrow I quit and then come back a few months later and say "Just kidding, I want my job back." they would laugh in my face. Why should he be any different?
I respect what he did on the field, but this is ***** T.O. does.- jhalar, on 08/04/2008, -2/+8If you were the best employee for over 16 years and never got into trouble and always showed up to work. I think your boss would take you back
- elipabst, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1The difference is that not only are they not willing to give him his job back, they won't let him work anywhere else. The dude earned the right to change his mind and strap the pads on for another year. If the Packers have moved on and decided to go with Rodgers, that's fine, but let the guy play for somebody else if he wants to.
- Wamzlee, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2If you look back, early March was a pretty short time to announce a retirement. He was burnt out after long season that went deep into January, and Ted Thompson was pressuring him to make a decision.
I can see why he may have announced his retirement prematurely. His wife said it was the most physically draining season he had ever have, because of how much preparation he put into the season (and it paid off too with a 14-4 record).
- jhalar, on 08/04/2008, -2/+8If you were the best employee for over 16 years and never got into trouble and always showed up to work. I think your boss would take you back

- brakzilla, on 08/04/2008, -2/+10he did not want to retire with this last ever throw on record being an interception. i believe he will play one last great, winning game then call it quits.
- ousthouse, on 08/04/2008, -5/+8I'm cool with him wanting to play football more - but screw him if THAT is the reason why.
- paulvq, on 08/04/2008, -3/+4Screw him for wanting to win?
- akeldama, on 08/05/2008, -2/+4Hey, his first pass in the NFL was an interception, why not the last as well? Kinda fitting don't you think? He is Mr. 288 after all!
- ousthouse, on 08/04/2008, -5/+8I'm cool with him wanting to play football more - but screw him if THAT is the reason why.
- mode7even, on 08/04/2008, -11/+8Regardless of his stature and history, I've lost a great deal of respect for the man, and that saddens me.
- stgx, on 08/05/2008, -7/+1I'm sure he gives a flying *****. I know I do.
- ousthouse, on 08/04/2008, -1/+7The claim is that he no longer plays for the love of the game - simply because he wants to play the game.
- GoatRoper, on 08/04/2008, -14/+3As a Wisconsinite I think I speak for most of us when I say "GTFO Brett", the future direction of the franchise needs to be sorted out.
- pgrit154, on 08/04/2008, -1/+11As a fellow Wisconsinite (well, I moved but still have my roots..) I'd like to tell you that I respectfully have to disagree.
- GoatRoper, on 08/05/2008, -4/+1Then you are nothing more than a Favre fan boy and not a Packer fan
- elipabst, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Fine. Cut him, trade him, whatever. If the guy wants to play and can earn a roster spot on someone else's team, then let him. The dude spent years on pain-killers so that he could continue to play for your team despite injury, it's the ***** least you could do. To sit on him and not let him suit up is pretty *****.
- pgrit154, on 08/04/2008, -1/+11As a fellow Wisconsinite (well, I moved but still have my roots..) I'd like to tell you that I respectfully have to disagree.
- suwoo244, on 08/04/2008, -9/+7Why do all the legends do that?
Michael Jordan...
Brett Farve...
MJ might not be remebered for unretiring (if that's a word) but I can assure you Farve will.- nathanbutnet, on 08/04/2008, -12/+2DON'T GROUP MJ IN WITH FAVRE YOU SOB! :)
- SadFootSign, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5How can you say that though, I mean MJ retired three times and in the middle went and played baseball. I admit what Farve is doing is messed up, but to say that this retirement is going to be remembered more than Michael's baseball stint is a little crazy. The fact of the matter is MJ is in the history now, just like Farve will be in a few years and it wont matter.
- nomadofthewaves, on 08/04/2008, -2/+14Why the ***** does everyone bring MJ up in this and get it completely wrong?
MJ's first retirement was after the MURDER of his father. His father always wanted him to play 2 sports like Bo Jackson. So he fulfilled his murdered fathers wishes and retired to play baseball.
He came back and completely owned the NBA for a 2nd 3 peat.
2nd time he did it to a. help the wizards since he had ownership in them, which he passed off to someone else since he became a player, and b. He was probably ***** bored of playing golf everyday and doing jack *****.
I mean you're the God of basketball the NBA to him at that time was like a group of elite street teams to him. Not to mentioned his whole life was devoted to the sport just as Brett Favres probably was.
Legends can't walk away before they're ready to and I don't think the really give a flying ***** what the general public thinks about their legacy's.
- BetterOffEd, on 08/04/2008, -4/+25He should've stayed retired, but this guy is pretty off base here.
"Green Bay didn't meet his price. That doesn't mean he didn't have one, though..." I think that's *****. If 25 million wasn't it, then what *would* have been his price for "staying retired?"
I think the guy genuinely wanted to play again, but he still should've stayed retired.- PhantomRogue, on 08/05/2008, -5/+2Everybody WANTS to play forever, just like people want to live forever. But you gotta know when enough is enough. As soon as you think about retiring, its time to retire. When the slightest bit of doubt is in your mind, you have allready given up.
Its nothing but not wanting to give up the Spotlight in Green Bay. Watch him come off the plane and his reaction to the fans, he wanted that reaction more than he wants to be on the field. He waited until Camp started to even fax in his letter of reinstatement. That tells you right there that he STILL questions coming back. You can NOT do that to the team you "love." He held the Packers hostage, and now the Pack will pay for it in drama this entire season.
Half the team will welcome Favre back, half will wish he just stayed retired and kept that media circus out of the locker room. Its selfish plain and simple.
- PhantomRogue, on 08/05/2008, -5/+2Everybody WANTS to play forever, just like people want to live forever. But you gotta know when enough is enough. As soon as you think about retiring, its time to retire. When the slightest bit of doubt is in your mind, you have allready given up.
- hokie47, on 08/04/2008, -10/+10Look Favre is one of the best QB of all time, BUT besides last year he has sucked the past few years. He tosses way too many picks. I don't understand why everyone thinks he is the best player as of today.
- nathanbutnet, on 08/04/2008, -11/+4I am so farging sick of hearing Favre's name and his bitch ass antics. Go Bears!
- pantone286, on 08/04/2008, -16/+3it amazes me how anyone over the age of 12 can honestly give a ***** about any pro football player. They are little more than overpaid knuckleheads who bitch and moan the whole time they are getting paid truckloads of cash to play a dumbass game. Wake up sports fans - brett farvre gives less than a ***** about you.
- evilpenguin81, on 08/04/2008, -3/+32I'm from Chicago and we're geared to hate Farve as much as anyone, but this article is BS. If it was about money he'd have just taken one of the generous commentator jobs he's, no doubt, constantly being offered. The man just wants to play football and the Packers are jerking him around trying to make it so difficult that he gives up and goes away.
- Recluse84, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Agreed. I'd of loved to have him on the Bears.. I was dreaming of owning a #4 Bears jersey, 5 of them in fact. One for each weekday to wear to work in front of all the Packers fans who I get ***** from weekly.
It's rough being a Bears fan in Wisconsin. - wireframework, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1I wish I could digg this twice.
- jodofashodo, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2I respect you man, I think he genuinely likes playing football...that's the end of the story.

- pgrit154, on 08/04/2008, -1/+17Buried as inaccurate.
- topgigmedia, on 08/04/2008, -2/+28Kriegel appears to sound like nothing more than a non-fan of Farve who only likes to hear himself speak. Farve has every right to come out of retirement and play again. The Packers are trying to have their cake and eat it too. They need to trade him and end this, since they apparently do not want him on the team. Anyone who is concerned about the politically correctness of Farve's actions are forgetting something. He isn't a politician! He is a freakin' football player who is only attempting to do just that... PLAY Freakin' football!
- SnuKs, on 08/04/2008, -9/+2Brett Favre thinks he's Bruce Wayne thinking he can just show up from the dead and everything will be given to him.

- Buzzpatrol, on 08/04/2008, -11/+3He's NOT the best QB or all time, He's NOT a nice guy and He's NOT doing this intelligently. THIS is exactly why people are tired of f**king diva's in professional sports. Shame, he seemed like a non-douche for a while..
- crypticlok, on 08/04/2008, -0/+7He IS a nice guy, I've had the pleasure of meeting him on two occasions, he was extremely nice to me and even told me a dirty joke!

Have you all not made a decision in a moment of indecision that you later regretted?
- stgx, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2I completely agree. Aren't Digg commenters frustrating sometimes???

***** you, he's making less then what was offered by playing. He wants to play again, I doubt it has too much to do with how many millions he'll be making. Go Habs Go!! - derekorr11, on 08/05/2008, -9/+3finally an article about brett favre that doesn't stick his whole ***** down its throat
- ruyen, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7Or maybe, I dunno, he just likes playing the game so much he changed his mind about retiring, no matter how much they tried to buy him off with. And realizing the pack have their new QB, he wanted to start for a team that needed him. Naa, that's not sensational enough for this lame Fox writer.
- Seemefearme, on 08/05/2008, -2/+9Buried because I am a Brett Favre fan boy and Fox news sucks.
- mikedor, on 08/05/2008, -1/+11That story is idiotic. He didn't take the money because he doesn't play for the money. He plays because he loves football, period. He even offered to take a salary cut when Randy Moss was a free agent. That was an effort to better the team, and have a better shot at a championship. He is the class of the NFL, and always will be. The greatest of all time. No one else has 3 MVPs, and no one else has played in as many consecutive games. He was the runner up for MVP last year; at age 38! This guy is legendary, and deserves more than anyone else another shot at a championship, and going out on top.
Buried. - secondfiddle, on 08/05/2008, -5/+0Brett retire already. Sleep in, cook a late breakfast get drunk and beat the wife a little, walk the dog. Just retire FFS!
- thelatermonths, on 08/05/2008, -4/+0The thing is, this whole argument that he's playing only "for the love of the game" and therefore should be excused isn't really a strong one. The fact is that he told management that he would retire, which meant that they started planning their future around Aaron Rodgers. While this normally wouldn't be an issue, Rodgers is NOT going to stay in GB if Brett plays another year. What you might mistake for passion actually hurts Green Bay immeasurably...at best, they get one good year out of Favre (unlikely, considering that last year was his only decent one in a long time). At worst, they get a bad year out of the all-time interception leader, and lose their first-round pick quarterback. And then what? Draft a free agent or play a rookie that's gotten one year on the sidelines?
- bubba9999, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4So what's your excuse for them not allowing him to play somewhere else?
- Wamzlee, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Dude, ***** rodgers. We have Brian Brohm.
- Epenepherin, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0I'll take my chances with Brett playing one more year to get a Superbowl over 10 years with Rodgers. The Packers have a decent shot at a title next year and to pass that up just so the Packers can have their unproven franchise quarterback would be a big mistake.
- bobrice830, on 08/05/2008, -5/+6For four years now, he's been threatening retirement. He's been so utterly selfish towards the Packers organization and Aaron Rodgers. He's totally had the organization by the balls for 4-5 years now with his wishy-washy attitude and the Packers have been stuck. The Packers moved on without him and suddenly that organization is the bad guy in the situation. This organization had no choice to move on.
***** Brett Favre,- KayIslandDrunk, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3Yeah, because it's not like he took the youngest team in the NFL to the NFC championship game last season or anything.... or had the second best numbers for a QB.... or had the best season (stat wise) of his career.... ***** him.
- UltraDavid, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2I don't think anyone's saying he can't play, but I also can't imagine anyone seriously contending that his attitude and act haven't been ridiculous for 4 years now. I saw Rodgers play at Cal, the guy has talent. Don't think that Favre's leaving means the Pack will have QB issues.
- bobrice830, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1Nice job of completely missing the point and bringing up things that are totally irrelevant to what I was saying.
- KayIslandDrunk, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3Yeah, because it's not like he took the youngest team in the NFL to the NFC championship game last season or anything.... or had the second best numbers for a QB.... or had the best season (stat wise) of his career.... ***** him.

From beloved retired football icon to selfish drama-queen. Nicely done dude. - robbiedo, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3I just am happy to see him play another season. Football is about competition, entertainment, and drama.
- bubba9999, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Go play for someone who wants you, Brett Favre.
- logicet, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2That's a BURN
- homescrubb, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5the packers organization is doing a great job of making him look like an *****
- wireframework, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3Buried. Kriegel is talking out his ass. I hope Farve takes the pack to the Superbowl and kicks Kriegel in the face on the way there.
- catkillcurious, on 08/05/2008, -0/+6Excellent to see Fox streamlining smear tactics throughout all of their media channels. Favre waiting for the right price to keep him retired? Such a sickening statement. The average football fan understands Favre's unbridled passion for the game. They offered him 20 million to stay retired? Clearly its not about the money. Watch him play (hopefully this year) and you'll understand why he came out of retirement.
- NSResponder, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1WTF? Since when does a business deal require the approval of anyone not party to the contract?
The man did a fine job of negotiating a deal. Good for him.
-jcr - moto526, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1This is the dumbest story I have read to date... { Burried }
- JohnnyKinder, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Not sure if anyone has addressed this yet, but here are some numbers for you....
Joe Montana -
Tuchdowns per game - 1.42
Interceptions per game - 0.72
Yards per game - 222.31
Dan Marino -
Tuchdowns per game - 1.73
Interceptions per game - 1.04
Yards per game - 253.55
Johnny Unitas -
Tuchdowns per game - 1.37
Interceptions per game - 1.20
Yards per game - 190.71
Brett Favre -
Tuchdowns per game - 1.72
Interceptions per game - 1.12
Yards per game - 239.90 - JohnnyKinder, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Favre - 3.2% interception rate/ 5.0% Tuchdown rate
Marino 3.0% interception rate/ 5.0% Tuchdown rate
Montana 2.5% interception rate/ 5.0% Tuchdown rate
Elway - 3.1% interception rate/ 4.1% Tuchdown rate
Brady - 2.3% interception rate/ 5.4% Tuchdown rate
Manning - 2.8% interception rate/ 5.6% Tuchdown rate
Bradshaw - 5.3% interception rate/ 5.4% Tuchdown rate
All in all, not a bad run if you ask me. Seems like the more you are asked to throw, the more likely you are to be intercepted, I think its called frequency probability? ;) And considering Favre holds the record for career attempts, one would assume he would have a high number of interceptions.
If you base the numbers off of ESPN's 10 greatest qb's of all time http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=193007 ... , the average interception rate amongst the group, is 3.9%, and the average tuchdown rate was 5.1%. Sure, it may not be a list of who I think the 10 greatest are, but, it does put things into perspective. - Dozer11, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0Talk about Diva of the NFL. Make up your mind already old fart. Next thing you know, he'll be asking for petals to be thrown at his feet as he enters the field.
Favre was great, but should have stayed retired. - UltraDavid, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1I just wish ESPN.com had a filter so I didn't have to get bombarded with whatever nonsense is happening with a QB I don't care about on a team I don't care about in a league that hasn't been relevant to me since the Rams and Raiders left a decade and a half ago. Even the sports news site I turn to when ESPN is being retarded, TSN.ca, has been all about it lately. Guess Fox is no better.
- nydwarf, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Wasn't his team 13-3 last year?? And people say he should stay retired? Shouldn't Green Bay have been begging him to come back?
- geekee, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1If McCarthy and Favre can't get along, McCarthy should leave, not Favre. What kind of idiot passes on the QB that gave them a 13-3 season took the team to overtime in the NFC championship game under record cold conditions?
- hoopy22, on 08/06/2008, -0/+0Hey Brett!!!! You retired!!!! Go fishing. Your selfishness is ruining your legacy. Dumbass.
- CHANNELOCK, on 08/06/2008, -0/+0Favre has made fans nostalgic for a quarterback of the past when he doesn't deserve any of it .
Favre chokes in the big games with his uncanny inaccurate clunker passes into coverage...so ***** painful to watch.
Then his Diva drama antics that people cut him slack over because he apes that Redneck Bradshaw ***** to the hilt.
Check out the new & improved
