- RoroCo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15He gets that mic and now ESPN's ratings will fall.... Seriously, we should get Michael Irvin, Keyshawn Johnson, Deion Sanders, and Joe Thiesman to do a talk show where they debate against bobble head dolls. I would root for the dolls.
But then again.. I always take the safe bets. - SirBotchness, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Now we get to hear him bitch about the entire league, not just his team.
- Coldstreak, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Just give me the damn mic!
- kilmer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Maybe you should demand a trade then.
- Skrilla360, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Johnson and Sharpe can actually speak English. I can't stand Irvin and his ebonics, not to mention his crack smoking and lies about it.
- DoctaStooge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Edit:
No one wants him on the terms that he wants. He was offered $8 mil from Tennessee but turned it down. - obliviousfool, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Jerry Rice ...21 seasons FTW!
- c0d3b0y, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4As a Packer fan, this makes me even more mad they didn't get Randy Moss.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4That makes no sense. It's not like Johnson is a better receiver than Moss and I don't remember ever hearing anything about a Packers deal with him anyway. As much as it kills me to say it, the Packers probably have a better team than the Vikings this year regardless of who they have at receiver.
- jtbndy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I'm surprised. I didn't picture him as that old, and figured he would be around for a couple more years actually.
- skored, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@akatherder - Michael Irvin got fired from ESPN in February.
- manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4He really cleaned up his act during the last few years. He's probably done more for his community than most others in the league. I also thought that his commentary during the draft was excellent. He was both knowledgeable and articulate. I'm sure that this post will get buried, but the guy has really come a long way.
- drafhk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's because Dwayne Jarrett, the receiver the Panthers drafted, is a younger version of Keyshawn. I laughed to myself when I saw him make those comments. I knew, as he should have, that he was toast in Carolina.
- Lax32, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Keyshawn could have actually signed with lots of teams... and basically any team if he chose to play for little salary.
And he is actually well spoken, anyone who watched the draft can tell you that he fit right in with the other commentators.
Wrong on both counts? - ScottoGato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think it's because of the big disconnect between the brashy wideouts and the old white guys in the booth, that they need someone there to relate what is going on with these guys. Most of the guys in the booth right now do not like to comment on things they don't have any idea about, or might get into trouble for saying. Well, Johnson gives them a guy where he can say a bunch of dumb *****, and get away with it.
- gostars, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I like that Irvin makes fun of his own ebonics. In sports radio stations in Dallas, when discussing a rough game he's say "man, somebody was gonna get kilt out the there" with emphasis on the kilt. He pokes fun at himself and that's all good.
- Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2espn = everything that's wrong with sports? without espn....where would sports be? FOX?
- sfpiano, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Is there some clause in a Cowboys contract that offers them a guaranteed deal with ESPN if they retire or something?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1*&%$@
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4How can anyone be surprised. The same exact thing WILL happen with Terell Owens. The fact is, regardless of how much you hate the guy, he was an excellent athlete and a great player in the game. He will provide valuable insight into the game itself and the strategies needed to win as a player. That covers his sports qualifications as a commentator.
He has also had plenty of face time throughout his career. People know him. They will tune in whether they love or hate him, just to see what he is going to say. Also, all that face time was giving him plenty of opportunities to make contacts, work on his speech, and get over any kind of fears he may have had of speaking on national television. How do you think Shannon Sharpe and Charles Barkley got jobs over the quieter guys? They weren't just being ***** in front of the camera to be *****. America loves ***** (as gay as that sounds). Believe it or not, these guys are smarter than you think. They've learned to market themselves.
Owens will do the exact same thing. You may hate him, but he's got the face time, he's not hideous, and he's probably working with some PR guys and journalism teachers to build up his commentator abilities. Do not be surprised if you see him on ESPN, ABC, NBC, or CBS co hosting college/pro football in the next 5 years. - CameronHigh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Great...he was terrible during the draft. He predicted EVERY team was going to take a WR. It was almost funny after the 10th time. He knows very little about football outside of this position.
- foofightrs777, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I think he signed in 1996 so in NFL years thats pretty damn old.
- gostars, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1ESPN Radio said Keyshawn averaged a 1st down on 67% of his catches over his career. Amazing.
- akatherder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Putting up with Michael Irvin is bad enough when I'm trying to watch football on Sundays. There should be a limit of one pompous loud *****.
- pitfallharry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Great. Now he can just bitch about not getting enough air time...
- c0d3b0y, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah the Pack may be better than the Vikings this year...but there is still that team in Chicago that we'll both have to overcome. I don't see the Pack or Vikings making the playoffs again this year, since we are in the crappiest division in the NFL.
- ayeroxor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1keyshawn isn't a name- it's the sound a donkey makes. KEY-shawn! KEY-shawn!
- cheesents, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Boom or bust as a #1 pick?
- DoctaStooge, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Yea, he was drafted in 1996 by the NY Jets with the #1 overall pick. The only reason he is retiring is because no team wants him.
- MostNutsEver, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0My Panthers shouldn't have cut him, not this year anyway.
- DerekV, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1MeShawn will not be missed.
- z0mb13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"Uh I fink dat dey should get a wide receivuh" every 10 minutes is not knowledgeable or articulate. I hope he doesn't play too prominent of a role because he's an idiot AND an *****.
- Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1you obviously know nothing about football.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Keyshawn had some good, productive years with the Cowboys.
By that point in his career, it didn't seem that he was really getting into personal spats on or off the field. - ruz322, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2He just said he retired because he actually didn't get a contract renewal from the Carolina Panthers. i remember watching the draft and hearing keyshawn talk about being excited about playing with all the new players the panthers drafted. he quickly put his foot in his mouth a few days later when carolina announced that he would not be getting a contract extension.
- nicc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0we must not have watched the same draft...Johnson was actually pretty damned good as an announcer that day and the others (Berman, Mort, Kyper, etc) were all saying that Johnson should get a job w/ ESPN after he finishes playing because he was so good.
- heynow21, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3What is ESPNs obsession with mouthy jerkoff ex receivers? Sharpe --> Irvin --> Johnson.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0How long before Johnson gets fired for inappropriate comments?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1How fitting that a player that epitomizes everything wrong with sports joins a sports network that does the same.
- MaximusAugustus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0well they don't call it the four-letter network for nothing.....ESPN sucks.
- kaiser44, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3***** that punk bitch.
- xcrunna19, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Guess thats a new trend...once all the teams reject you, you go to commenting about all the bastards. Wonder how long this publicity stunt will last. Not like he has anything intelligent to say....
