- HookmasterCH47, on 12/01/2008, -10/+33Yet nobody talks about Texas Tech, or that OU had the only win against a ranked team on the road. I agree and understand Texas' position. Hell if I was there I would be piping hot about it. It's not like OU broke any rules, they exploited a gap in the system. Computers always seem to get the raw deal of it. People want the computers to play a non-biased role and when they do everyone screams about it...
Also, the BCS gives us all a reason to freak out this time in December. I personally want to see OU vs Texas in the NC (assuming Bama loses). Why is everyone so quick to dismiss Florida losing at home to a non-ranked team? Nobody talks about that at all. If Bama loses it should be OU vs UT. Those two team's only loses are far easier to explain away than losing at home to Ole Miss. - SlyT862, on 12/02/2008, -0/+19"The BCS proponents (and playoff opponents) say that a playoff would undermine college football’s regular season."
They say every game is like a single elimination playoff game. They're forgetting:
1. When are there only two undefeated teams from major conferences at the end of the season? Almost never.
2. What if a team loses one of its first games? By their logic, every game from that point on is meaningless.
3. Allowing some leniency in the regular season would encourage schools to schedule better non-conference opponents. Now big schools schedule joke teams from small conferences or D1AA because they want to make sure they don't lose. - harronoob, on 12/02/2008, -0/+18It's the same argument every year :( Someone always gets screwed and nothing seems to change.
- Ramenhood, on 12/02/2008, -3/+17It sucks that teams like Ball State or Boise will never get even a chance to win the championship, how is that fair?
- BetaBand, on 12/02/2008, -0/+12Translation: Please look at my picture
OMG secret reverse psychology! - jason0802, on 12/02/2008, -1/+12Dont blame the BCS, blame the Big 12! In the SEC this would not have happened.
The Big 12 tiebreaker system is what screwed Texas. If there is a 3 way tie in the SEC, they look at the BCS standings and eliminate the worst team of the 3 - which in this case would be Texas Tech. Then they go head-to-head matchup on the two remaining teams, and since Texas beat OU, Texas would be in the championship game. - newtrip, on 12/02/2008, -0/+11I'm no fan of the BCS by any means, but hey, the BCS didn't tell the Big 12 conference what to do in this situation. Each conference gets to choose their own way of selecting the teams playing for the conference title.
The BCS is jacked up, but the BCS is also not the reason OU will be playing Mizzou for the Big 12 title.
Even a one + game would go a loooong ways here! - khaavren, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10Is there anyone that actually likes the bcs? Its to prevent an undefeated team with an easy schedule from being anywhere near winning a national championship, wouldn't the first round in a playoff system eliminate them anyway?
- sdwilly, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10Wait, you really think that is "her" picture?
- bustabinary, on 12/02/2008, -6/+15Texas should feel like they got screwed, but if the polls went the other way and voted Texas instead of Oklahoma, we would just be reading the exact same arguments from Oklahoma fans.
The BCS sucks, but I don't think it was wrong to send Oklahoma in. - Fleagleman, on 12/02/2008, -2/+11It's just like bad TV folks. If you don't like it, then don't watch. The BCS system is set up to put money into the bowls, thus keeping the sponsors and advertisers happy. If you want a playoff system, then stop paying thousands of dollars on premium bowl tickets, and stop watching the games on TV. Otherwise, you just continue to give them exactly what they want, therefore giving the powers that be NO REASON to change the system at all.
- suburbanWMD, on 12/01/2008, -6/+14tl;dr. I know the BCS sucks. Everyone knows the BCS sucks. We don't need an article to tell us so.
- MotherOfGod57, on 12/02/2008, -2/+10***** the BCS!
- coldwind777, on 12/02/2008, -0/+8OU didn't exploit *****. They just played football. Coach didn't complain, players didn't complain. OU did nothing. The gap in the system favored OU, but they did nothing to actively take advantage of it.
- MrTito, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7Exactly. The problem with this OU-UT crap is that it's not what the BCS was designed for. This is really the fault of the Big 12 for using BCS standings as a tie-breaker which is a ***** and cheap shortcut even if it is the 5th or 6th step in the tie-breaker rules.
If USC or Penn State were undefeated, we wouldn't be hearing about this because the #1 and #2 and maybe even #3 spots wouldn't involve a Big 12 school. But because of the perfect storm that the #2 spot is (most likely) gonna go to the Big 12 champ, then everyone gets to add just a little more hate to the BCS.
Yes, the BCS is a joke and needs to be fixed. But the Big 12 needs to fix their retarded tie-breaker system also. - Badandy127, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8Make me a sandwich, bitch.
- Midtowner, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8OU won two of the three polls, only after they lost 15 points in the Harris poll after destroying the #11 ranked team on the road.
If OU had lost to Tech, there'd be no 3-way tie and Tech would be in the CCG.
Texas has a fine argument, but OU's is just as good. - offrdbandit, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8The first step is to put everyone (and I mean everyone) into a two division conference. Make all the conference rules the same, THEN we can start worrying about whether or not a playoff is needed.
Until everyone is playing the same number of games under the same rules, everyone bitching about a playoff is wasting his or her time.
For example, if the SEC had Big 10 or Pac 10 rules, Alabama would be locked into the title game. As long as each conference has different rules, there can be no fair system. - twinklyJesus, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7You put YOUR photo on DIGG??? WTF? - stukdog, on 12/02/2008, -1/+7It must be very difficult to recruit at these schools. "You can come to our school, we can go undefeated 3 times in five years, but we won't ever get a chance to play for the national championship."
- RolanNorth, on 12/02/2008, -2/+7You are right. OU never broke any rules and they are a very good team and will have a great game in the BCS Championship and most likely the national championship. The BCS will get fixed one day but I'm mad because I am a Texas fan but who cares, we are going to be even better next year and then pretty good for the years to come after that. We will have plenty of chances to get to the Championship in the next few years.
- dext3r, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5This is a joke, right?
- fadetoone, on 12/02/2008, -2/+7OU beat the living ***** out of tech. The point differential alone is enough to throw tech out.
- rufus2, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5Who's running up the score? The offense that scores 59 in 40 minutes and 0 in the last 20 minutes against A&M at their place or the offense that scores 21 in the final 15 minutes against A&M at home?
- wh3873, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5Seriously are you ***** retarded or is this just sarcasm that flew over my head?
You're on Digg, you put your photo up, you're a chick (and not an ugly one I might add) ... it's going to get looked at. That's the whole point of the photo function.

Seriously, nobody in the Big 12 thought "hey wait a minute, why are we letting rival coaches and their respective local sportswriters decide who wins our divisions?" - Khanvalescent, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4I would like to have sex with your hot little troll ass.
- paulvq, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5What about the two unbeaten teams(Boise State and Ball State) who will most likely be left out of a BCS game this year?
What about undefeated Auburn in 2004 who got left out of a national title game?
"Don't lose" isn't an answer to college football's problems. The only year "Don't lose" worked was in 2005 whenever USC and Texas played. - brown2hm, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4The worst part about the BCS and the bowl system is that there can never be a Cinderella team like there can be in other sports. If you're from a smaller conference, it's already unlikely that you could get to a national championship, but with the BCS it's actually impossible.
- viet10, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4any retard can graduate from texas tech.
- matthewinDRO, on 12/02/2008, -2/+6@ShowSh1ne:
A recent NCAA report showed Tech with a 79 percent graduation rate, tops among Big 12 teams and well ahead of Texas (50 percent) and Oklahoma (46 percent).

don't be douche and spout off about that of which you have no clue. - badenoughdude, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Schools (and everyone else) that makes loads of cash from their otherwise worthless bowl game appearances like it.
- abooth413, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4This is clearly the fault of the Big 12, not the BCS.
The Big 12 sets the rules all by themselves that determine who plays in the Big 12 Championship.
OBVIOUSLY, if there is a tie, any rational person would first look at head-to-head performance.
Blame the Big 12, not the BCS this time. - jls33fsls, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4This is the first logical comment I've seen yet.
- gfxlonghorn, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4That's the problem, there is no unbiased way to rank a team other than win loss and a subsequent playoff. The programmers of the BCS algorithm basically put what they think is important into their algorithm, granted they have years worth of data to alter it, but it still inherently creates a bias. The BCS isn't THAT bad, even from my vantage point, at picking the top 10 teams in the nation. But past that, its very hard to differentiate between one loss teams.
- MrTito, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5The two teams playing for the title love the BCS. Otherwise, everyone else hates it.
- BayouBengal, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Hey, we could just go back to the old 'pure bowl' system and just vote for the champ. The last few BCS Championship game matchups would have never happened in the old system. The BCS provides a "champion" albeit a sometimes controversial one.
- Midtowner, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4You could only think they were running up the sore if you haven't watched OU this season. The Okie State game was the first one in awhile that the 1st string has played significant time in the 4th quarter. And when they do that, they switch mostly to a ground/power game to eat up clock.
In the Oklahoma State game, Gundy called a time out with 25 seconds to go. He still had two left. All they did was try and run it up the middle. That went for TD.
But seriously... what patheting whining... whaaaa... OU ran up the score. Good God... - Badandy127, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3The Big-12 is the best conference this year, but I don't think you can count SC out of it just because of the strength of their conference. The point of playing a a hard schedule is conference is to see if a team is actually good. If that's already been proven (like it has the last 6 year for USC) I think you can give them a little leniency. For example, Kobe Bryant playing a bunch of high schoolers in basketball is still Kobe Bryant. His competition may not be good (they would make a shot or so though), but he still is Kobe Bryant, and you don't need him playing in the NBA to recognize his talent.
- Xihix, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4I bet if this had happened just before the elections and Obama's idea to make playoffs was more well known, he would have won Texas.
- dafragsta, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3What was the score in that Texas Tech game again? No, I mean, the game you guys had against Tech. Three way tie completely nullifies the head-to-head. I don't think the BCS outcome is the best way to decide the tie-breaker, but don't assume entitlement when you guys LOST to Tech, who was undefeated until OU beat them. Texas fans rooted hard for OU that week. I should know. I live in Austin. Dudley and Bob were playing the ***** OU fight song one morning as my radio alarm went off, which blew my ***** mind.
You wanted a win over Tech, who was undefeated at the time so that you could be in the hunt, but you don't want to factor them into the head-to-head as well, and you want to penalize the team for even giving Texas an opportunity that left when Tech beat Texas. - mintt3a, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3Agreed!! without playing Missouri, OU have played 5 ranked teams. Texas, only 4.
- dafragsta, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3How did Texas do against Tech again?
- TheSwashbuckler, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3That solves one problem and creates another - what teams get into the playoff.
"Oh! It's not fair! XYZ team (aka my team) didn't get in and they beat a team that did get in."
People don't like it, but a playoff does NOT solve the big problem. BCS is as good as anything else. - falstaff, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3Given a hypothetical situation where the 1-2-3 teams all have 1 loss, to each other, there will be at least 1 team ranked higher than a team that beat it. It's not the end of the world. A playoff system is LONG overdue (I-AA "FCS" has been doing it for ages with no problems), but this is no more of a reason than any of the others. It happens.
The issue here is the #2 team lost to the #3, but what about Texas' loss? Doesn't it make more sense to "forgive" a loss to a top-3 team than Texas' loss to Tech at #7? By the logic in this article, Tech must automatically be ranked higher than Texas.
Both teams have a claim to the #2 spot, but one could argue that half a dozen other teams do, too. So no, this isn't the straw that broke the BCS' back. It's barely even a real controversy.
That said, bring on the playoffs. - 1longtime, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3Still *very* entertaining though.
A profile of a woman with "cooking, cleaning, massage therapy" listed as hobbies. Priceless! - CommanderEFG, on 12/02/2008, -2/+5To be fair their schedules don't compare to teams such as Texas, USC, Ohio State, ect.
Look at Hawaii last year. They went undefeated, the only team to do so last year, and ended their season at #10. They then faced #5 Georgia who DESTROYED them 41-10. - MrTito, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4Well, if Texas had barely beaten Tech instead of barely losing to them, then Texas wouldn't have to worry about any of this would they?
