- pauleric, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17It seems highly unlikely. Even if people think that the loser should be #2, a team that loses usually drops down a few places, and it's the last game, so there's no recovering. Plus nobody wants to see 2 teams from the same conference play a rematch. So I think you're safe as far as that goes. Now just win yourself.
After OSU beats Michigan, they'll have a much easier time of it with whoever they play for the championship ;) It could be just like old times, there were some great OSU vs. USC games in the 70's, back when I was actually watching a lot of football. - bflfab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16This bit from the Cultural Impact section is great:
"In 2003, a judge in Columbus, Ohio allowed Jeff Renne, an inmate charged with forgery, to stay in a local jail so that he could watch the 100th game between OSU and Michigan. Renne told the judge that he would plead guilty as long as he could stay in jail for the weekend and watch the game before he was relocated to a prison."
It's going to be a great game! - tradingbrowsers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16This "IS" the National Championship - period. After this game, all others from here on out are meaningless in terms of who's #1 (and no, I'm not a UM or OSU fan).
- timdawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15My favorite ESPN Commercial: Without Sports, this wouldn't be disgusting....

GO BUCKS! - knueven7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Big 10 is 91-86-7 versus the SEC. Another fact, The Big 10 has a winning record versus every major conference.
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The Iron Bowl? I didn't even know there was such a thing. Hmmm. I guess you learn something new everyday.
- Janus67, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Needless to say I am exttremely excited for the game. I'm going to be there on the 35 yard line!
- knueven7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9So you're saying if Michigan loses big they'll fall below a team they beat?
- gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@d8cam -> That "HATRED" you speak of is one reason why you don't get the OSU-Michigan rivalry. I grew up within earshot of the stadium and can tell you that while the rivalry is legendary, long standing and intense, hatred is not part of it.
I can get loud and obnoxious in the car when I see a Michigan bumper sticker but I don't HATE the people. I noticed the difference in how we approach our rivalries when I lived in Florida for a few years. I saw Gator fans behaving like out of control a-holes towards whoever their opponent was that week. Sports is good and healthy. It shouldn't be a murderous thing. Even boxers usually have a healthy respect for their opponents and they are physically, individually, directly challenged... not just a fan with strong emotions.
The Big 10 is an older, more mature conference than, say, the SEC. It shows in our nature and in our rivalries. Learn from it. - JackyTreehorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Did you just use the word "yanks"? Sounds to me like a bitter Southerner. Alabama sucks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@d8cam
you don't live in columbus, do you? also, i used to live in birmingham, and the rivalry is pretty huge down in alabana, but it isn't osu-michigan. - gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Seriously... this is just natural selection for lawn and porch couches. It is part of the natural progression of a couch's life.
1. Bought by a nice family for their new living room set.
2. Sold to someone at a garage sale.
3. Given to a college student for their new, off campus place.
4. Tossed out as trash by said college student after graduating.
5. Picked up off the curb by another college student to serve as their "outside" couch (aka. vomit couch/"what's that smell?" couch/drunken hookup couch/crash couch).
6. Violently destroyed (usually by fire, power tool or explosive) in an alcohol fueled frenzy after the victory/loss of home team in main rivalry game.
It is a standard life cycle... just like plankton or a politician. - Analogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I find that kind of insulting. This is the greatest rivalry in sports. This rivalry started two centuries ago (1880's). I think it is a safe bet that the current political/economical situation has NO effect on why the fans of UM/OSU are cheering for their team.
Maybe you are fuming because you have no team to cheer for come the New Year's. - Analogic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7As much as I will be pulling for Michigan. This is a great show for the Big Ten, represented in both the NC game, and the Rose Bowl, as well as showcasing 3 of the top 10 teams in the nation.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6While I am not a big fan of the BCS system, I think in general it does a decent job at providing an accurate ranking system for college football. However, there is too much gray area in the BCS and this can only be resolved by having playoffs at the end of the season.
Can anyone honestly say that there is a team that deserves to be ranked higher than Michigan or Ohio State this year? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sometimes I wonder what price my tickets can fetch me (13AA). But then I realize I would be selling my soul. This will be one HELL of a game.
Go Bucks. - knueven7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Rutgers fan?
- crypto55, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12And now for something completely frivolous:
O-H! - Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No, must be Boise State.
- knueven7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Just the dumpsters and lawn couches.
- JackyTreehorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think OSU-Florida would make a better championship game than OSU-USC. Still, I want to see OSU play USC for all the marbles. We'll kick the University of Spoiled Crybabies ass.
The Pac-10 is the Big East of the west. - johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Rutgers never had any football fans until about a week ago. No one in New Brunswick or anywhere in New Jersey for that matter has ever cared about Rutgers football.
- gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You southerners really do have a touch of "small man" syndrome, don't you?
- KrypticOne, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9"There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."
-Woody Hayes
Go Bucks!!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The cops are having every dumpster in the city emptied and every couch on a front porch taken away every day of this week! The riots in 2002 really put a black eye on the city and Ohio State's reputation. On game days, the police essentially have the city on marshall law. No one can do anything, but the one couch fire that occurs off campus gets blown out of proportion by the media. It's sad. Sad because of the fact that we feel the need to stoop to the levels of WVU fans, and sad that the police strip any and all freedoms we have for one night.
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah. Sadly, Columbus will be burning this weekend. :-/
- markh100, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Decent chance.
Pecking order for the #2 spot:
USC (if they win out) - Arkansas (If they win out) - Rutgers (If they win out) - Rematch - Notre Dame
Personally - I'm rooting for a Michigan - Rutgers or Michigan - Arkansas final. USC is coming on strong since the upset against Oregon State, but I still feel like they are overrated, while the Scarlet Knights are a very underrated, competitive team. - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Indeed. Taking opposite sides and cheering for a good natured sporting event is a heck of a lot better than grabbing weapons and starting wars with each other. You get a sense of belonging, with regard to your fellow supporters, and it provides an outlet for aggression that is wholly lacking in American society in general.
- markh100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Make it the top 8. If you don't qualify for the top eight, you're gonna be hard-pressed to win the national title anyways. 4 extra playoff games is too much, but if you start the season a week earlier, and drop the reg. season back down to 11 games, the champion only has one extra game. Only drawback is all the money lost from all those meaningless bowl games. They could still have bowl games for teams that don't qualify, and consolation bowls for the teams that lose in the first two rounds of the playoff.
- kevin_ou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hell yeah...we drink Natty down here at Ohio U....GO BUCKS
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Wow, you must be a blast to hang out with. Lighten up and don't be so judgemental just because you have no interest in sports. Do you also have hangups about the "jocks and popular kids" from high school too? Maybe you should talk to someone about your issues.
It is a great sports rivalry and overall just a really fun week to show some school pride and get excited for what is generally a great game. No one thinks that this rivalry "makes them matter". In the end it is just a game, it is just sports, and on Monday we all go back to living our lives.
With that said..
GO BUCKS, DESTROY MICHIGAN! - carcrazy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm an OSU fan, and, quite frankly, no matter how immodest this sounds, I don't think I'm very rude (unless it is deserved, in which case I can be as mean as the next guy, but normally I'm nice).
I'm sure its who you meet. If the OSU fans weren't brought up in such a way that they were taught to respect anyone and everyone, then they're probably rude. Same goes for Michigan fans - etempest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The worst part is the riot no matter who wins or losses in both places.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Beast is the preferred beverage of the University of Dayton. Natty is the preferred beverage of Ohio State.
- JackyTreehorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4People don't drink Milwaukees Best at OSU. They drink Natural Light. (Probably because there's a Bud Light brewery right up 315)
- carcrazy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think I'm going to be at a swim meet in Virginia. But, and this is a very big but, my parents are considering going up to Ohio for the weekend so we can at least go to skull session before the game, and then watch it at my g-parents house in UA, or maybe at my other set of g-parents in Franklin. Either way its going to be a good game!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"I ain't never been nothin' but a winner."
- Paul "Bear" Bryant
Digg me down if you want, but know that he had 6 national titles, and Woody Hayes had how many? WHAT! - SmokeChiba, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conquering heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
The champions of the West!
The best college fight song ever. - gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey! I'm from UA too! I'm coming down from the Cleveland area for the game (got 2 tickets). Also staying at my parents place (down around Glenn Avenue if you know the southern part of Upper Arlington).
- farlane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We have a pretty nice post on Absolute Michigan with TONS of links to Michigan and OSU sites and blogs, some really funny videos, a great story about Woody Hayes and his hatred of Michigan, Captain Picard and (of course) the Dead Schembechlers:
http://www.absolutemichigan.com/dig/michigan/university-of-michigan-wolverines-vs-ohio-state-buckeyes/ - kr3wthrough, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MICHIGAN FOREVER AND ALWAYS. OSU sucks... overrated and have had no real contests by far this season... their only player worth studying is Troy Smith, but no one else cna come within the range of Michigan's individual and team skill and smarts. Michigan will destroy OSU this saturday, by far... and then capture the national championship. 57-39-6 Michigan leading the series and will add another to the win column sat.
- Joel32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As far as I know it goes back to a Monday Night Football game, when they do the intro's and they say what school they are from (even though some knuckleheads now say their high school, elementary school, etc...), Eddie George started saying THE (pause) Ohio State University. It picked up steam since most every player watches MNF AND most of those guys from the mid 90's went back to Cbus to work out in the summer w/the strength coach (who is now @ Nebraska) together and decided to all do it. Terry Glenn, Joey Galloway, Orlando Pace, Rob Kelley, Antoine Winfield, Andy Katzenmoyer...etc, etc.
- The18Delta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Joel,
isnt that "THE' Ohio State University? Why do they always do that??? - The18Delta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I can say regardless of rankings, we all have teams that we'll (true fans that is) follow to hell aand back. That is the true joy of watching. When a team that you watched maybe with your father, or grandfather, one or both of which may be gone now, that is real joy passing that enjoyment along to you own kids. I am a true Notre Dame fan, always have, always will. I think I might even bleed gold. :)
- blantonious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I-O
- gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Though I was weaned on dusty six packs of stale Black Label purchased for .99 cents at the Viking minimart just off campus (and have the bowel scars to prove it).
- tookeey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Michigan also has big rivalries with Michigan State and Notre Dame. Ohio State just sits around all year seething about Meeshigan.
- Joel32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and winning...
- emack1998, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0USC vs. Notre Dame is the best college football rivalry!!!
More National Championships have been decided by this game. Fourteen Heisman winners have played in this game. No other rivalry can claim this. This is an indisputable fact!!! - emack1998, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Both Michigan and OSU have an all-time losing record against USC!!!! That's a FACT!!!
