- MikeDawg, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Yes there is. The ability to sit through and watch a 160+ game season is quite the feat.
- Rethcir, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Yeah, cuz making fun of millions of peoples' hobby on Digg is such a noble pursuit.
- catfud, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4there is nothing more amazing then watching a guy hit a home run
even on steriods
the fact that a person can hit that ball with a bat when its coming at him 90 to 100 mph and hit it flush enough to make it travel 350 to 500 feet is insane - catfud, on 11/30/2007, -2/+4racist
- silentdragoon, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2"Five bucks back *then* could have probably bought a car, so that is a pretty good *haul* for a defensive touchdown."
- evan242, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2taking over for baseball as the national pastime?
NFL is already by far the most popular sport organization - Phlyers, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Um, Bulger is out this week...
- yournightmare, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Lol @ thinking nothing existed before the interwebs.
- Chewie67, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Fantasy Football is Dungeons and Dragons for Jocks.
You create your little fantasy "team" and play them against other little fantasy "teams". You track their abilities and statistics.
Face it, your all D&D Nerds. - LuxFX, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2If you ask me, it can be directly attributed to rapidly dwindling attention spans. Baseball is just a slower paced sport, and 'pastime' has been modified from meaning "entertaining, relaxing activity to do in your spare time" to "entertaining, exciting activity to do in your spare time."
The same thing is observed in movie editing. In early to mid 20th century movies the average shot time was more than 20 seconds. In modern movies, it's less than five. - typicalusername, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Doesn't make any sense to me...
- typicalusername, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Don't get me wrong, I like fantasy football as much as the next guy. I think it's pretty liberal to call that it's "origins". Unless one of those 8 guys was the one who started up the first FF website, I think it's innacurate.
- BigBadDunk, on 08/24/2009, -0/+1Try this for European Fantasy Football - http://www.sportspundit.com/football/fantasy/
- trilks, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1i think the writer meant to say "haul". regardless, his five-dollar-car comparison is stupid.
- tman84, on 11/30/2007, -2/+3who the hell does coed magazine hire as staff writers, and why do articles from this site get dugg, its terrible writing and piss poor journalism, they can't even spell correctly
"so that is a pretty good hall for a defensive touchdown"
is that supposed to say "haul"? I am no English professor and in a world of LMAO and FTW I understand we lose some sense of standards in our language, but this is just awful. And thats just a single example, the entire article is ridden with crimes against grammar. - Asianwaste, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Anyone else think that picture is the most retarded failure of a high-five?
- tHePeOPle, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1stats = attributes.
- glecko, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Fantasy Football was around long before the internet/websites ... although I tend to agree that this "beginning" is a bit hokey.
- MikeDawg, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1This idea is para-phrased from Adam Carolla, but I fully agree.
Problem #1 with baseball: 160+ game season
Problem #2 with baseball: When not active on the field, baseball players are sitting on their ass, chewing sunflower seeds, putting their hats in weird "rally cap" mode, chatting with one another, not even paying attention to the game. Therefore making the whole sport less entertaining to the viewer. - tman84, on 11/30/2007, -3/+4fantasy football is just dungeons and dragons for the guys who used to make fun of the kids who played dungeons and dragons.
- nyls, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Many of the comments above are from the sidelines. The thing with Fantasy Football is that it's surprisingly addictive once you've tried it, which explains the large and growing number of FF fans. You can play it free on http://www.software4free.org/fantasyfootball.html
- rmany2k, on 11/30/2007, -2/+3"Five bucks back could have probably bought a car, so that is a pretty good hall for a defensive touchdown."
Does this make sense to anyone else? - jfritz828, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Not only was I running a fantasy football league in 1992, I was downloading stats with the 'Fantasy Football' software from Compuserv.
- baker551, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1I played Fantasy football with others in the office in the early '90. Was popular back then, but nothing like it is today. BTW, I played college football.
- Rethcir, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Well gee, this really tarnishes the bastion of English literature that is "Co-Ed Magazine"
- jefbob, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but depending on how your leagues scores he might have saved a couple points. When I looked this morning, Favre had -2 in my league, Bulger can't do worse than that so rrunboy12 just saved 2 points*.
*Could be more points or no points depending on the league's scoring. - drastik21, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1 I found this more interesting http://coedmagazine.com/sex/Guys-Room/Gender-Gap/3 ...
- nbcaffeine, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Yeah. My friends and I did that in high school around the same time. We drafted in person from a long athlete list, and we got stat updated from one kid's father's office league. It was... fun, but nothing like the instant info leagues online now.
- jacook11, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1I'd say there is a difference in keeping up with football stats and deciding which magic spell to use on a make believe monster.
or whatever you do while playing Dungeons and Dragons - benroy, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1I've been saying the same thing for years. And collecting and trading baseball cards is just about as nerdy as playing Magic:the gathering.
- cam18, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1What if you're not a jock and like football?
:( - Chewie67, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1I believe it was the Packers that dropped the deuce.
- BigBadDunk, on 08/24/2009, -0/+1http://www.sportspundit.com/football/fantasy/ - European Fantasy Football League Compete in the major leagues of Europe
- Phlyers, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0That's one of the best parts about baseball, it's on just about every night. You don't have to sit down and watch every game, but it's nice to have on in the background all summer.
- sweetmustache, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0I was playing fantasy football along with 6 or 8 others in 1989. And the league is still going today.
- mccune, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1"Seriously, is there any reason to sneak beer into the dorm and watch a game your favorite team is not playing in unless you have a couple of C-Notes on it?"
Um, yeah, you like football, maybe? I will watch it if it's on, and I have never bet on a football game or played fantasy football. Sorry, but if I cannot get out of the first paragraph without seeing statement like this like this then what's the point of continuing? Buried. - gopanthers, on 11/30/2007, -2/+2That article is 100% *****! No where close to true. Here's the true history:
1) Daniel Okrent invented the concept of "Rotisserie Baseball" in 1980 and wrote a book which gained mild popularity for years.
2) With the advancement of the internet, playing Fantasy Baseball made huge leaps in popularity in the late 90's. Note that I said Fantasy and not Rotisserie because at first it was considered to be a specific brand name developed by Okrent. And I said Baseball again, not football. NOBODY played fantasy football before 2000.
3) Then finally Fantasy Football and other sports were developed to quench the popularity of Fantasy sports fans who wanted more than just baseball. Although they're not the only ones, I'd say Yahoo is the biggest reason for converting the popularity of fantasy baseball into fantasy football.
That article is total crap. Even if some buy bet on the results of players, he had absolutely nothing to do with developing it into anything other than his own personal hobby. And to say that Fantasy Football made the NFL popular is the most ridiculous claim I've heard all year! - tbrand86, on 11/30/2007, -2/+2Fantasy Football is a large industry indeed. But to say it's the reason football has become larger than baseball is completely ridiculous. It became bigger because baseball is flat out boring minus the playoffs and Americans have naturally progressed into wanting bigger, stronger, faster athletes. They want to see more amazing spectacles of peak athletic performance...and you sure as hell aren't gonna get that in baseball anymore.
- romantic101, on 12/23/2008, -0/+0Great news football

- MysticSavage, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0Al Bundy, is that you?
- ksarj, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0NOBODY played before 2000????????
We started in 1993 after seeing a advertising handout from Miller Brewing. If Miller was advertising fantasy football, then SOMEBODY was playing it. - bahamuto, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure about the other stuff however I know for a fact my friends in high school played fantasy football before 2000. They were playing in high school circa 1996-1997. It probably got way bigger after 2000 however.
- mydave, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0Football is the best game all over the world then baseball, and then the others!

http://www.chasr.org/ - gebsta, on 11/30/2007, -2/+1I invented fantasy football yesterday while I was droppin' a deuce durin' the Packers game
- tHePeOPle, on 11/30/2007, -2/+1Fantasy Football/Baseball is simply a way for the people who make fun of Dungeons and Dragons players to play Dungeons and Dragons themselves without having to admit it.
- Chirp08, on 11/30/2007, -3/+2Close, except the guy was actually too fat and out of shape to actually make any football team, ever, sat around drinking beer watching football with his buddies, and came up with the idea of being able to almost play the game without actually having to get off his fat ass.
- R75700, on 11/30/2007, -2/+0Who cares.
- rrunboy12, on 11/30/2007, -4/+1fantasy football makes the games much more exciting to watch...by the way..I benched Farve before last night and started Bulger for this week. :) I should get a lottery ticket!
