- GeeksSpeakFont, on 12/12/2008, -0/+26This is an amazing sociological feature and not at all what you'd normally expect from ESPN. I'm very impressed with this investigation.
- ryrysofly, on 12/12/2008, -0/+16I am from the other side of the US, in long island, New York and I see the same thing here. I went to a very diverse high school and wouldn't trade it in for the world. I see the lines being drawn every day that distance social classes and it is for real. Towns that are literally separated by a highway look like night and day. I believe this is formed by class divides; wealth is thing that distances ourselves from others, even more than culture or skin color.
- danconia, on 12/13/2008, -7/+16This story is embellished a bit. I went to La Costa Canyon and while yes it's white suburbia they make it sound like O'Side is the complete ghetto. Oceanside is not that bad.
What's annoying is how they throw in the "he backs out with his black jeep" and "most popular guy and was homecoming king" sorta *****. It's obvious the writer is a loser. - jasdf, on 12/13/2008, -8/+17So many words, so little interest.
- mikbunn, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7Well, duh.
- chris8535, on 12/13/2008, -3/+9I would have loved to read this post but it had a number of things going against it. It was extraordinarily difficult to read, with headlines that made little to no sense. Lines were 2 to 3x the size they should have been, making it cumbersome to read a long story across what feels like two pages of space.
Writing is confusing and overwrote a few times making already far to long of lines feel clunky and uninviting due to a ridiculous amount of football jargon. Dramatically tiresome. How about telling us what and why we are reading?
Great photos though. - cdigioia, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Ah right...like in North Korea...why don't you go there & have fun in the worker's paradise?
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Usually, like a lot of dissertations, it's filled with copious amounts of *****.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3Drink moose piss and die.
- bduddy, on 12/13/2008, -2/+4It's ESPN. It's not written for the Digg crowd.
- cfeick, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2why would you move from california to canada?
- iloveobama, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3Maybe because they want to get away from high crime areas which are generally poor?
- lolwaffle, on 12/13/2008, -3/+5They can't be too poor if their family owns cars. Not having a ride home is why I had to quit school sports.
- jbob2000, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Where did you send them in Canada?
- bduddy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Pssst... he's a troll.
- known, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Everyday teachers should solicit questions (both rational and irrational) from children and disclose them in school notice boards or in a website.
I believe this will enhance intrinsic motivation of children. - Czechxican, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3This story was really freaking hard to read at first. If you stick it through though it's interesting, but not really that profound.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3Can we get some carbon dating on Justin? he can easily pass for late20s early 30s.
- frankdozier, on 08/10/2009, -0/+2you are rich, I take it? what is poor? what is rich? what is fire? you should die
- llopez1223, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2I understand that High-School football is only a small example of the difference between the haves and have nots, but communism is would not solve this problem. Especially when you consider that communism kinda sorta DOESN'T WORK. Sure the theory of equality is nice, but you can't have total equality without sacrificing liberty completely. Communism by the way did not eliminate poverty, maybe it was because of corruption, which in itself defeats the purpose of communism altogether.
"Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff"
-Frank Zappa
I suppose I got carried away there. - Jeffler, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Canadian here, it seems that if Oceanside is really as bad as your schools get, then I think your students would refuse to go to school in Canada. I'm in a fairly high ranked school in Toronto, and just looking at the football field - O'Side's looks easily 5000x more state of the art than ours, which is mud with occasional grass.
- captinherb, on 12/13/2008, -1/+2I don't know about a white thing. But as a Lions fan I am here to state that yes, some wealthy white men are complete morons and will continue to make very poor decisions. And should be considered morons in the face of the first 0-16 record in the NFL.
- smacksaw, on 12/13/2008, -1/+2My kids were supposed to start LCC this year - lucky for them they moved to Canada with me. I can't stand any of their friends from back home. All brats. The schools in that area were always bugging us for money for this and that. When I was a kid I used to watch Oceanside games because they were awesome. I'd love to see the La Costa/Carlsbad/Encinitas people give some money to help Oceanside and Vista. There's good people there, good kids there who don't have a lot of great opportunities. Even if we didn't pony up tons of money, LCC would still have awesome football no matter what kind of turf. And OHS will still need more security and more after-school diversion programs.
I dunno. Reading that article made me a bit ill. LCC is worse than it's made out to be and Oceanside isn't nearly as bad.
Bonus for OHS: You can walk right out of the driveway of campus and get El Pollo Loco. Walk out of the front of LCC and get run down by some teenage bimbo in a BMW driving to Anthropology to buy clothes that are 20 years too old for her. - ricker2005, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Yep, you got it right. It's the old boys club again. They hire crappy white coaches because they don't want a good black coach instead. Clearly these very wealthy men got to where they are being complete morons and would gladly give up the a chance at making lots of money with a winning team just so they could stick it to some minorities.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Sorry but you can't go saying theres a huge rich-poor divide in America -_-
Maybe you should look at a country where there really are rich-poor divides like Russia - Pake, on 12/13/2008, -1/+2"Towns that are literally separated by a highway look like night and day."
And sadly this is how they often decide on splitting up schools when new schools are built. Happened during my HS year back in 2000 or so, where they split the school up based on the interstate and effectively made one school for the rich and one for the middle class and poor. Night and day difference between the schools to this day, where one HS receives new books every couple years for every class and the other might get lucky to see a few classrooms receive new books. You can guess how much the split in race is between the two schools. - Typhoon2009, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1tl;dr has never been more appropriate. How the hell do you write what's almost a ***** dissertation on high school sports?
- Tyrghast, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1If you ever thought money doesn't make a difference in high school sports, I direct your attention to the schools down here in Aledo.
- llopez1223, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Have you heard of the Rooney Rule? It basically states that minorities have to be interviewed when a coaching position opens up in the NFL. I'm not sure if that includes offensive, defensive, special teams, etc. coaches but definitely head-coaching jobs.
Also what about Mike Tomlin? The man arguably has the best team in the AFC, and he is black. - crocodial, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1i lived in oceanside for about a year and just recently moved there. from what ive heard, it used to be pretty bad, but the block i was living on was full of $900,000 condos. granted these were built for people to retire in or to spend a few months of the summer at, but i never saw any neighborhood that was really in bad shape. some not the greatest, but ive seen much worse in place like long island, which is a generally upscale area.
- llopez1223, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Then why have black players? Why not go back to the days of an all-white team? Oh yeah, because owners want their teams to win, no matter what race. Besides extreme racists that want to "stick it to some minorities," probably do not have a lot of cash, unless they are the leaders of churches but that's another story.
- smacksaw, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Go shopping at the Henry's market near LCC when the "stay at home moms" are out and you'll know in about 20 seconds.
- Jeffler, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1But you don't see us with hockey rinks, if you want to equivalate it.
- smacksaw, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1I'm homeschooling them and then they're going to Vanier or Dawson for their DEC.
- wiredclimber, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1I hear that.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Carlsbad is F***ing awesome, I'd probably hate it as a teenager, but I'd love to live there now. I worked there for a while and lived in oceanside. Some of the most beautiful coast in the state. Oceanside is pretty cool, some parts are a little rough, but if you get educated, put in the real hard work which is mental, you don't have to live there forever.
- radicalchaos, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Dugg for rich-poor gap.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1He's right though... I have to admit, I'm a huge *****, I worked hard in school all the way back to being a kid, spent much of my free time learning to program and network, and I only give half of my earnings to the state after income, sales, property, ssi, medicare..... It's really a shame it's not 80%, I would work even more and take a night job if it was.
What's even worse is my dad did the same but worked even harder with poor parents who were bad role models to start, just to make sure he wouldn't be poor again, my siblings and me would have it easier, and he could move us to a neighboorhood with good schools before we hit high school. I don't know why my dad was so selfish. He should have partied and hung out more and brought us into the world before he could properly provide for us. - tmt64, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Because Canada isn't nearly half as crazy as America is for football.
- DevilInPgh, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1You answered your own question with Rooney Rule. Who came up with it? Dan Rooney. What team does he own? The Pittsburgh Steelers. For every Rooney who considers a Mike Tomlin, there will be 10 others who will just bring in Art Shell as their tokens.
- purzzzell, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1don't feed the troll.
- fishshogun, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1We got our rainy season in So Cali two days ago and no mud this year in either place.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 12/13/2008, -1/+1Yeah I don't think wealth is the root cause though. Go to a raiders game sometime, a real social laboratory, then ask yourself, are theses people like this because they are not very wealthy, or are these people not very wealthy because they are like this. There are some serious culture prolbems that need to be addressed before I ever consider poverty in this country a permanent affliction that is unbreakable; including poor white people in the mid west.
Chances are you've met an asians, persians, and/or indians that immigrated here with very little, and are kicking everyone's ass in school in fairly short time if not immediately (especially if you live in CA the melting pot). I've met a few indians in engineering who talk about walking on dirt floors at their K-12 equivalent schools, telling me that in their equivalent to junior high and high school they studied what I did when I was in college.
I want to know why the wealth distribution conversation is dominated by making excuses for some cultures, while other cultures that readily succeed against big odds often in the same inner-city poor school environments are completely left out of the discussion. - mhmdkhamis, on 02/06/2009, -0/+0… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … ______
