Guns are illegal in and around schools. - n1eb, on 06/24/2009, -1/+23Didn't the shooter read the sign? NO GUNS ALLOWED! Geez, when will criminals learn to obey the rules.
- quirkopatra, on 06/24/2009, -3/+15"im going to blindly guess he was a hothead that demanded too much from his highschool KIDS."
You are what's wrong with us. - LucasJ218, on 06/24/2009, -0/+11This coach is a guy that lost his house and school in the 2008 tornadoes that struck much of the Midwest, including Parkersburg where he lives. He was a great guy who did a lot to get the community back together and rebuilding after the detestation.
He wrote this last fall after that tragedy. http://www.guideposts.com/print/17286 - collution, on 06/24/2009, -0/+8I'll give this about 4hrs and 4min until someone brings up the issue about the right to bear arms.
- FrankRizzo69, on 06/24/2009, -3/+10If the dude wanted him dead he would have used a freaking spoon as much as a butter knife. Don't blame the gun you ***** liberal morons.
- purkel, on 06/24/2009, -1/+8Any idea what the motive to the shooting was?
- fargoclimber, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7Additional coverage and updated info on the story here: http://DesMoinesRegister.com/EdThomas
Seems that the suspect, Mark Becker, was a former player for the football team and has had a lot of legal trouble recently. - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7He coached four current NFL players, all lineman, Brad Meester of Jacksonville; Jared DeVries; Casey Wiegmann of Denver; Aaron Kampman of Green Bay.
- hawksfan03, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6on KWWL (the local TV station) they reported the gunman had applied for an asst coach job and was turned down.
There are also details emerging about how the gunman was arrested on Saturday evening and then released. I found more details on that and both of these websites

- btschul, on 06/24/2009, -2/+7Wow, he's lucky he was in a gun-free zone. Oh, wait...
- andreo, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Yeah, well, the answer to that is: quit the team. NOT shoot the coach.
- hawksfan03, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6yep, you blindly guessed. he was the best high school coach in iowa and one of the best in the nation. Has 4 former players in the NFL and was one of the most respected men in NE Iowa. Gather some facts before you spout off *****
- Alli3388, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Well, you're PROBABLY right... although we don't know why the guy shot him yet... Could be a really sordid situation, you know?
- cuoops, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5The killer was in a high speed chase last weekend. I was just on the news.
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4I had the reply button liquidated for being insolent.
- greenanator, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Maybe you two had bad experiences, but the coaches that I had made a tremendous difference in my life and provided me with many opportunities in a safe environment. This is a terribly tragic story and shame on you for applying your personal vendettas to one that you obviously have no relation to and do not know the circumstances surrounding the situation.
- TheWorm, on 06/24/2009, -4/+8Your comment is just passive aggressively trying to be inflammatory. No better really.
- hawksfan03, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4i talked to a guy who read your comment. he said it sucked dick so i will remember you for your ***** comment rather than the good comments you post
- DRNOOO, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3But on Tuesday, Becker was released and spent the night at his parents' Parkersburg home before heading to the high school Wednesday morning, the division said. "Law enforcement was unaware that Becker had been released."
WAY TO DROP THE BALL CEDAR FALLS POLICE !!!!!! Because of you stupidity
a man died Wed morning !
Insult to injury !
Coincidentally, Becker had been released from the same hospital where his alleged victim died -- Covenant Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa - TheRedLemon, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Because he won nat'l championships. He's one of the more famous high school coaches.
- hawksfan03, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3there were a ton of articles submitted hours before this one, just a few that got no recognition

- zwendkos, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4Sad. I really hope it wasn't some crazy parent going on a rampage. High school sports are full of nut job parents...
Condolences to the family and RIP Coach Ed Thomas.
Here's a more detailed article from a local source:

and local community reactions:
http://learfield.typepad.com/radioiowa/2009/06/ico ... - jpop, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2So why was he out of prison then?
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -4/+6Some people were never meant to have firearms, and it is unfortunate that this man was killed by an obviously unstable individual.
- Tubal22, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I kind of doubt it.
Read ANY article that has anything to say about him. Before or after his death.

http://www.kwwl.com/Global/story.asp?S=8386438 - LucasJ218, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2There are several rumors. The one I'm hearing the most is that the kid had a full ride to Wartburg College but also was a drug addict. The coach supposedly let Wartburg know about drug issue and he lost everything.
He apparently vandalized someone's house Saturday and the cops took him into Covenant Hospital for a mental eval, requesting to be notified upon his release. Supposedly neither the evaluation nor the notification took place. If that's the case, the hospital could be in BIG trouble. - Dauntless1, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3He coached football. That makes him better than a real teacher.
- hawksfan03, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2the kid graduated 6 years ago....
- Dauntless1, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1That's a Texas law, not Iowa.
- Tubal22, on 06/25/2009, -1/+2Here you go... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation
- LucasJ218, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I doubt it, but I don't know. Media is officially reporting that he's had several police encounters this month, some of which were over drug paraphernalia, but aren't giving further specifics. I'm with you - weed doesn't make you shoot people. He's also been in and out of rehab, so I'm guessing it's more than that. Regardless, he could just be bi-polar in addition or have some other mental illness. You just never know.
- Leonffs, on 11/20/2009, -2/+3Yeah I hear you. I just saw this on CNN a few minutes ago too.. It's terrible and all but lots of people die every day..What's so special about this?
- KayIslandDrunk, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1So in Iowa I assume that means he was in his john deere doing figure eights between the barn and farm house?
- TheRedLemon, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1If you turn on sportscenter for 10 minutes they'll probably talk about him
- hawksfan03, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1ron steele from kwwl here in waterloo reported he was on meth and when he was caught running on saturday night he was running from a meth house
- jpop, on 06/25/2009, -1/+2He can walk into the room with the butter knife, walk up to the coach, say "Hi Coach" stab stab stab... Not much the coach can do there either...
- Subduction, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Is this really what passes for philosophy among gun supporters? Whether it's the killer or the gun with the capacity for cognitive thought?
Of course it's the human, and not the inanimate object, that decides to become a killer. That, Tubal, is not the point.
The point is that once a human being has formed intent, what tools do we make available them to accomplish their task? How efficient will we make them?
Even with a sociopathic and murderous intent, a butter knife will only take you so far towards your goal. And a crossbow? Have you ever tried to conceal a crossbow? Have you ever tried to reload one? You get one shot tops, and if that misses, or is non-lethal, you're pretty much screwed in the whole killing thing. Even if you succeed you can only kill one person.
A gun, however, after you've formed intent to kill, can be easily concealed until you get where you need to go, it's terrifically lethal, and allows you, if you choose, to kill many people at once. It is a machine that turns a killer into a killing machine.
Butter knives and crossbows? Not so much. - TheHIV, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1Huh, maybe the article should have mentioned that.

The killer was in a high speed chase last weekend. I was just on the news. - dmclone, on 06/24/2009, -2/+2You're a ***** idiot who didn't know the coach. Maybe look into his history and what he has done for the city and you may have an idea what you're talking about.
- Subduction, on 06/25/2009, -2/+2Really? If someone tries to come at me with a "freaking spoon" or a butter knife, even by surprise, I have what is commonly known as "a fighting chance."
If, however, someone walks into a room with a gun, they can stand all the way across that room and kill me and I have no chance at all. Then they can kill six, or eight, or a full clip's worth of people in under a minute with the same tool.
That, if it really has to be explained to you "***** conservative morons," is exactly why I would be happy to trade guns for butter knives. - sportstraining, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0His son was just hired as the new AD. It would be tough to follow in his foot steps. Here is a local video of the coach.
http://www.championsportstrainingtv.com/videos/vid ...
Good guy and not a hot head. Very respected! If he was a hot head we need more of them. Ed Thomas was what America is about.
God Bless
Doug Whipple - Subduction, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1jpop, don't try to make an argument that there is any equivalency between a butterknife and a gun, it sets a new low of stupidity even for gun nuts.
- Tubal22, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1@jpop: He could have come in with a crossbow and stood across the room.
Point is, it's not the gun, it's the killer. -
