- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -1/+32You can't cancel a game between 2 top 10 ranked teams! That's Man Law you're messing with. Border skirmishes must be resolved, otherwise the terrorists win.
- sjbdallas, on 09/27/2008, -1/+16What a great way to ensure that everyone runs to the gas station to fill up and GUARANTEE the town will run out of gas. Hey, next week maybe you should run an article speculating that if everyone in town were to take their money out of their Wells Fargo account that it would cause the bank to fail and everyone else would lose their money.
- metapop, on 09/27/2008, -0/+14riots either way.
riots happen if the game is cancelled.
riots happen if the game is on and the gas is all gone.
awesome. - RealmDown, on 09/26/2008, -4/+16I have two favorite teams: Tech, and whoever the hell else is playing Georgia.
- David513, on 09/27/2008, -1/+10The headline on this item is sensationalistic and wrong. There's nothing in the story that even brings up the possibility of a riot. It's just about a temporary shortage of gas because some Gulf oil platforms aren't back online, nothing more dramatic like social unrest or riots.
And as a 'Bama grad who'll be watching the game, I can assure you that the fans of both schools are MUCH more likely to riot if the game were canceled. :-) - apothekari, on 09/26/2008, -0/+9I agree with the crux of your sentiment but this isn't New York or Boston.
In many places in NC for example where I live there IS no Bus to take or the routes are VERY limited and I don't have 200 bucks to drop on a Bike or the stamina to pedal 9 miles to work to my minimum wage job that is cutting its hours because NO one is shopping there and so it just feeds the misery.
This country is about 6 weeks from all out crashing infrastructure wise.
One more big unforeseen patch of ***** and ill preparedness from BushCo{TM} and we're all *****. - metapop, on 09/27/2008, -0/+5that a nice thought and a very simplistic answer to a very complicated question. the infrastructure in the majority of the united states isn't set up so that people can do either of these things. i used to live in europe, in a city which developed primarily before cars were invented... and residential/industrial/shopping are generally intermingled, bike lanes abound, and public transportation makes far more sense than driving anywhere... however, the united states has primarily developed during the time of the automobile, and as a result city planners and real estate costs have dictated that everything is spread out, and thus makes what you have suggested extremely difficult. after losing about 20 lbs while living in europe (but probably eating more fat while living there) i'm also convinced that our reliance on cars is a large cause of our obesity problem.
- forcefizzle, on 09/27/2008, -1/+6cool! does that mean gov. purdue is going to have a prayer vigil as a means to solve this crisis like he did for our on-going drought crisis?
- picto, on 09/27/2008, -1/+6Georgia. The school where 95% of its fans have absolutely NO affiliation with it whatsoever.
- iVone423, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5Because in America we don't have trains going everywhere. Only major cities have a subway, and what railway systems we do have are used mostly for freight. Most Americans Drive at least 30 minuets to work not including traffic. There isn't enough time in the day to ride my bike 40 miles to work, then 26 miles to school then 29 miles back to my residence. That is the same case for many Americans. Basically regardless of what transportation is available were still *****.
- bwmdiym, on 09/27/2008, -1/+5ha ride a bike from Alabama to Athens or even Atlanta to Athens would suck on a bike stop ragging on America
- cyrix, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4It's ok to cuss on Digg. Your mom won't read it.
- OrangeTide, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4it's 4am, if I start right now maybe I could get there in time.
- picto, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4Have you actually ever heard of Athens, GA? Athens is a college town, surrounded by a ghetto, then 30 miles of NOTHING in every direction. I guess you could ride a cow, though...
- FishThePirate, on 09/27/2008, -2/+6Fighting for gas? Next thing you know we won't be watching football, we'll be watching THUNDERDOME! Sounds pretty awesome to me, I don't see what the problem is.
- th3w00d, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3Kind of like Alabama?
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -4/+7I ma drunker than a witches tit
- synapz, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3@apothekari: I'm no fan of BushCo{TM}, but why lay all this at their feet? The government ***** with the market, and by extension, us, in countless ways. Government as a whole is to blame. It isn't "conservative trickle-down economic policy" or "liberal welfare economic policy", it's _policy_.
- JDFrancis, on 09/27/2008, -1/+4You spelled veil wrong. You are your own undoing.
- peestandingup, on 09/27/2008, -1/+4Lucky this wasnt in Texas. There would've been much bloodshed.
- picto, on 09/27/2008, -2/+4My roommate told me the Athens police are pretty much saying don't come unless you've got enough gas to get there and back. Apparently 316 is drier than....well...you get the idea
But in all seriousness...Roll Tide, Roll - goshdang, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2people are dumb everywhere. herd mentality ftl
- metapop, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2the bigger riot will undoubtedly be if the game gets cancelled, so i vote for that one.
- lmf49, on 09/27/2008, -4/+6Ride a Bike. Get Over IT.
- winston840, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2We are out of gas already 10 station 2 had gas both out in 1 hour. Its real bad in east of Atlanta.
- ReeferChiefer42, on 09/27/2008, -1/+3Boo ***** hoo! I live in College Station, TX, a small college town, and everyone was dumb enough to believe that we were going to run out of gas due to hurricane Ike, so everyone went and filled up at the pump come that Friday before the hurricane, inadvertently causing a shortage in gasoline for the entire following week because everyone filled up at the same time. I'm a pizza delivery driver and I was out of gas for a week because of typical, stupid speculation.
- metapop, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1that's exactly what happened in nashville, where i live. it sucked.
http://digg.com/business_finance/85_Of_Gas_Station ... - jesusfreak216, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1glad the game isn't here
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1The Penal Code has been violated.
- metapop, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. I HAVE A DISEASE. THANKS.
- metapop, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1*that's*. it was bugging me, and i didn't catch it until after i couldn't edit anymore.
- jeebodon, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2What's the good word?
- unitedkronos, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2The question is which one will be more fun to watch.
- ATLien74, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1Actually, I believe the Mann Act is about transporting underage girls across state lines for sex.
- jesusfreak216, on 09/27/2008, -2/+3just say "roll tide" it's shorter
- ATLien74, on 09/27/2008, -2/+3***** your football game. I need to get around and go to work!
- jinsundo, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1"Football Gas Riots"?
Football food riots next? - OrangeTide, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1because it takes too long to bike 50 miles to work. and it's illegal to bike on highways. and I don't want to get to work all sweaty because they don't have a shower there. I can't live near work because the real estate is too expensive.
America is just too big and spread out to make walking or biking practical except for a tiny minority of the population. It's not like Europe at all. - OrangeTide, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1takes 2 hours to take the bus from Santa Clara to San Jose. but it's 7 minute to drive there on city streets. You over estimate the ability of public transportation to serve the community in the US. outside of a couple major cities there is no point in using public transportation.
- thespiff, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1If there is demand for it, the system will improve.
- hydroplane, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Welcome to THUNDERDOME
- electrikyle, on 09/27/2008, -3/+4I live about 45 mins from Atlanta and commute three times a week - there hasn't been steady gas at a single station between here and downtown for at least four days. Late last night ONE local station got a shipment in, of course I needed to fill up like everyone else but the number of people filling up spare cans was sickening.. Our system is not designed for this. People in my neighborhood have been siphoning gas out of other peoples cars, etc. Its disgusting to think what we've all turned into having to go half a week without our "precious commodity." I also fear that many of these barbaric thinkers will sway their votes to McCain thinking that he can just drill it up and hand it to 'em. Not that that makes sense, but people are dumb as bricks here.
- ashura001, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2The reason we're running out of gas in this area is partially because people around here are stupid. When Ike started heading for the gulf, everyone freaked out and started filling up every car they had, some even bringing their boats and spare gas tanks to be filled too.
With everyone suddenly going "OMFGZ! Teh gas is going to run out!" and buying all they can, of course it's going to deplete he supply even faster and drive the price up even higher, which is what happened.
If people wouldn't freak out at the slightest sign of trouble then I don't think we would be having this problem. Prices would have gone up a bit just because the rigs in the gulf were shut down during the storm, but I don't think it would be as bad as it is right now. - brownsound00, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1go back to youtube.
moron gas? seriously? - inactive, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1No I meant Man Law:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ6SdR5rPXM
Remember: If you poke it, you own it. - Gromit, on 09/27/2008, -1/+1I can see how 7 losses in a row would generate obsession on that level.
- ATLien74, on 09/27/2008, -2/+2It must suck seeing your favorite team getting beat all the time then.
- PeteyBugs, on 09/27/2008, -1/+1What? Where on earth do you live? I live in a relatively small town (roughly 70k people) filled with farmers and immigrants - and I manage to ride my bike to work every day, and I could ride my bike every day to school when I was in school. 40 miles to work? 26 miles to school? Why dont you live somewhere a little closer? Or find a better (closer) job? If you're making minimum wage, its no like your standards are high.
