- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -36/+109did he spike the pill bottle and do a dance when he finished?
- starvingarvin, on 10/12/2007, -24/+87C'mon now, if true this is pretty sad.
Yea the guy is a total prick... and I don't mind making fun of him, but not for this. - jemans, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Allergic?, Yeah I'm allergic to half-bottles of prescription painkillers too!
- datastorageguy, on 10/12/2007, -20/+50People who really want to kill themsleves don't take pills...they jump in front of a train, nose dive off a tall building, etc. This was a cry for help.
- argblat, on 10/12/2007, -15/+44So I literally find out about this news via the my RSS feed of Digg. I click on the article, shocked, which takes me to this here page where I hope to get a little more information from the summary and the comments. Instead I get 100 retards desperately trying to come up with the best punch line for a story that is literally happening as we speak (Yahoo hadn't even posted the news when it hit Digg).
I'm a big fan Digg comments as a place to be a comedian, but for some reason I found myself completely repulsed by having them be shoved in my face when I was still trying to get my head around the news itself.
P.S. I'm a Giants fan, and have never cared much for T.O. ... but it's not about football or the dozen things people have against him because of football .. when a person attempts to take his own life you have to forget about all that stuff...
Have some ***** class Diggers ... seriously - beanstalk, on 10/12/2007, -18/+36If I had to play for the Cowboys, I might consider it also...
- WVUChrisF, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24I didn't have to register. But here's a direct link to the story on their page: http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/15620551.htm
- fishdan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24I read this over at http://www.sportsdot.org: "There is very little confirmation of this. Considering this story was broken by a small AM radio station, I'll believe it when I see TO or Drew Rosenhaus or Bill Parcells or Jerry Jones confirm it. Till then, this is the circus that surrounds TO."
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20Man, he has so much talent and he keeps wasting it away...
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21I didn't see this coming, so there goes your theory.
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Dude, before you flag something as innaccurate, maybe you should do a little checking first. Just because you haven't heard of something doesn't mean it didn't happen.
- axxiom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13If you've watched 10 seconds of Sportscenter in the last two years you'd know that Owens was a social misfit as a kid. He didn't have friends. He couldn't make friends. His mother made him play sports to create a different social environment for him. She made him go to church to balance it.
Owens is basically an athletically gifted freak with no friends in the world. - fishdan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Sportsdot now has a link to the actual police report, so you can read it for yourself:
http://www.sportsdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/09/27/1439216 - lkravets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12uhm its the front page story on espn.com
- AdamFitz, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23Not to sound too insensitive, but pills?
Overdosing on pills is for 14 year old girls who's parents don't love them. It really just seems to me like another cry for attention, as this is TO we're talking about. - WVUChrisF, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13According to the news I heard on the radio there is a police report filed where TO was asked if he was trying to harm himself and he replied yes.
- bombtrack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Flagged as an idiot, read the other comments. There's plenty of other sources that have been cited.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12espn is confirming the report now, 10am est
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11>Wow, I've never seen a more immature group of comments on digg.
>Grow up people.
dude, this is digg....home of the 13-early 20's crowd...aka those who know everything about everything and no one can tell them different. - crzdmnsldy, on 10/12/2007, -16/+23You guys are *****.
- incognit0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9it's been on espn and si for close to a half hour already....
- Slooper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Two things:
1- This seems a little off to me. The reports all seem to indicate that he is out of the hospital. Generally a patient is kept in the hospital on suicide watch for 72 hours after an attempt. Either I'm reading the articles wrong, or something here is a little off.
2- Whether or not the story is true, it really must suck to be T.O. right now. Not only is he not playing, but now he's getting bad press and people are going to seriously be nasty about this. And, if you add depression to that list, it really must suck to be him. I feel sorry for him. Poor guy. - ccrandall77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Seems to me that the pain medication in the first place could've made him suicidal. There's been no indication that he's been suicidal in the past and pain medication has been linked to suicide in some rare cases.
A person I know, with absolutely no history of mental illness or suicidal tendencies, was suicidal after a car accident. She was on pain killers and muscle relaxants. Once she went off the pills, the suicidal thoughts almost immediately went away. Hell, if acne medication can make you suicidal, certainly pain killers could have that effect on some individuals I would think. - starvingarvin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I beleive that was the story originaly reported across the media. The breaking news is that he was attempting to kill himself.
- bombtrack, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15Wow, I've never seen a more immature group of comments on digg. Grow up people.
This man may have been clinically depressed his entire life which would go a long way into explaining his erratic and destructic behavior. Mental illnesses are just that, illnesses. T.O. may not be a likeable guy but, do you hate people with physical illnesses like this? - izzie2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13To say it's a publicity stunt just shows me how insensitive the world has become.
If he needed more press(like he could have gotten more than he already had) why not just hire Dennis Rodman as his agent.
Depressed is depressed.
No matter what some may think he is a human being first and a football player last.
Depression doesn't care who you are or how much money you have.
I guess Tony Dungy's son commited suicide because he was wanting more press for the Colts.
Sometimes life is real. - bshniper, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17It's clear that TO has his demons.
True, he didn't act right, but that may have simply been a sign of mental illness. We should have seen this before, it was just one of the warning signs. He ruined an entire season for the Eagles (who are making a nice comback this year). But this was not a very sane thing to do either. He originally really loved being on the Eagles, and genuinely, at first, respected and was respected by his team.
Truly, it was his a-hole managers who left him in that aweful position. He was exploited as a pawn of those who wanted to unionize the game. And he was left millions in debt, with his name tarnished, after this mismanagement.
And he wasn't right in the head. Apparently, his egomania and lack of social skills left his team with little choice but to axe him. Bashing his own quarterback for bad plays (something not at all deserved, btw), well that doesn't help. The guy is supposed to throw you the ball!
But is he really a "bad guy", or just mentally disturbed? I think the latter. I pity him, and hope that maybe he can get his act together and get the help he needs to use his considerable skills to good use. (Skills that go beyond football, btw).
And I'm an Eagles fan. - axxiom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7When is enough coverage enough? The guy is half of Sportscenter every night.
- honavery, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2604395
And SI: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/football/nfl/09/27/owens.report/index.html - lesskiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Maybe it was on purpose, maybe not. But remember a few things:
1. It is well documented that the guy has been screwed up in the head since he was a kid. Many people have tried to help him and he's always refused. This didn't start last week, last year, or his last spin with the 49ers.
2. A lot of diggers are pissed that others are joking about it. Guess what? TO will be cracking jokes about it all season just to spin it, regardless of the truth.
3. If you tried to kill yourself, TO wouldn't give a ***** if you did it in front of him. He's step over your body on his way to his Bentley.
4. I'm sure there were many successfull suicide attempts in the last 24 hours, but nobody seems give a ***** about them. The media has found a juicy lead with a "everyone look at me" poster boy and they're running with it, including digg.com (over 900 digs in 7 hours?). We're no better than Fox News on this one.
5. Not a one of us will lose any sleep over it tonight, no matter how sympathetic we want to be. It doesn't make us bad people. It's just the way it is. Most of us are more passionate about sharing our opinions about a subject than we are about the actual subject of the discussion. - sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It wasn't WBAP, it was KTCK The Ticket that broke it based on the WFAA report (i was listening at the time). They reported that WFAA had obtained the police report. KTCK is nothing to sneeze at, they're the best sports talk station ever: http://www.theticket.com
- furo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6One of the ESPN guys just confirmed on live TV that both the 49ers and Eagles recognized warning signs and offered mental health treatment, which he naturally scoffed at, as one would expect. He needs help... a suicide attempt is as clear as it gets in that respect, but there was plenty of warning leading up to last night. I'm far from his biggest fan, believe me. I can't say that I wish he'd died, but I've long detested his behavior and attitude. As it has continued to mount, it did make me wonder what would happen when he had to answer to Parcells.
Look up Barrett Robbins and then tell me that mental illness and the NFL are compatible. T.O. is heading down that same road... - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12"ya, the pothead who can't stay off it to be in a BETTER league.
don't even try to compare the two... seriously"
Comparing the NFL and CFL is like comparing the NFL to NCAA. Many people like CFL better because there is a stronger emphasis on the passing game, higher scoring, and overall faster play. The NFL offers better strategy, harder hits, more spectacular plays, and more intensity.
I prefer NFL football for the intensity, but CFL football can be pretty good. I'm still hoping for a Toronto NFL franchise in my lifetime. - dallen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8TO's body is his livelihood. He treats it like a temple. The idea that he would abuse it for attention is ridiculous.
- maddoginthefog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nothing to see here folks. If he took 35 pills he would not be able to conduct that press conference today. He denied having his stomach pumped. This is a big, huge non-story.
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Irvin was just on ESPN saying he talked to T.O. 15 minutes ago and TO told him it wasn't a suicide attempt. He's going to speak to the public in 5 minutes (on ESPN). Supposivly the police report says he "tried to harm himself" but his publicist is denying it.
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11roastedbagel : yep and another knucklehead plays for the Canadian Football League... Ricky Williams, maybe you've heard of him?
- cyoung83, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The Star-Telegram is a well-respected news source in the DFW area, and possibly the country. Just because they don't reports news on a national stage, doesn't mean it is the least reliable.
- evilunleashed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This cries "Publicity Stunt" to me. I see no coincidence in the fact that the first season in four years that his isn't the top sports story all year long is when he does this. He is overshadowed by Chris Simms being taken off for an emergency Splenectomy, the homecoming of the New Orleans Saints, Shaun Alexander falling victim to the "Madden Curse", and that's just NFL news. The Detroit Tigers going from worst to first? Definitly more captivating than Owens working out in his driveway.
And as far as "he's a human being, have some compassion"...***** that. Genocidal madmen, rapists, murderers, and greed-consumed "businessmen" are humans as well, and I have no compassion for them either. What has Terrell Owens done for the betterment of humanity? How many diamonds did he sacrifice purchasing in the off season to donate money to the needy? How much of his time did he commit to humanitarian programs? If there was any of that going on, it certainly didn't make the news.
If it was Warrick Dunn or John Lynch or one of the Manning brothers, any NFL player that has acted in a humanitarian manner, I would certainly express sympathy. But for a greedy attention whore? I say try again. - dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Taking a bunch of painkillers is only step 1 of a good suicide plan. If you stop there, it's just a cry for help.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is amazing the amount of energy and effort people put into hating a guy who catches a ball for a living.
Why not aim that venom at a real bad guy like Andrew Fastow. Hating Owens is like hating "tommy wild fire rich". It is a waste of your biggoted time. Never knew digg was inundated by so many jealous assed moron white dudes. - mypenis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@shane828...but laugh laugh laugh. True philly fans would then say "I told you so!" and "Now Dallas' season is ruined. YES!"
- activeyaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm sure he will be back soon brighter than ever ready to catch that big old fat cheque.
He gets paid to play a sport he loves. He has a big house. He has all the best cars. He can sleep with any biatch he wants. I'm jealous and he is suicidal. Please! www.suicidal.com - maddoginthefog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here's the scanned police report...
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2006/09/27/SPGVBLDMT87.DTL&o=0 - WVUChrisF, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4According to the news I'd seen/read the publicist was the one who called for the ambulance.
- mtxblau, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8I'm going to separate football and the man for a second (which is very difficult, as I am an Eagles fan) - I wish him a speedy recovery and that he receives the help he needs.
Having seen him in Philly (at training camp up at Lehigh), and knowing how much effort he puts into keeping his body in top form, I can't believe that ingesting that much in pain medication is a cry for help. He might be a jerk, but there's one thing you can't say about him, that he was a troublemaker off the field. He was a model citizen off of it, and he certainly never did anything to hurt his body before. And you can't say that he wasn't a gamer - when he's on the field, he's not generally taking plays off like Randy Moss (ok, fine - not as many).
Yeah, I wanted to see him go down like every Eagles fan (well, that's a divided crowd too) but not like this. I would've preferred a concussion from a Brian Dawkins hit, not because he was trying to kill himself.
But I guess it explains a whole lot about his personality, huh? - themajor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the cowboys must be associated with sony in some way
- evilunleashed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It really took you 7 hours to decide to repeat your racist nonsense again without even making a point? Obviously you don't have the intellect to actually rebut. You obviously have a grudge against white people, and anything a white person says about a black person is because they're a racist or jealous. I can see how being limited to a 3rd grade vocabulary and stunted by mental deficiencies can cause you to be upset at the world.
