- BeShirtHappy, on 11/04/2008, -1/+12I live in Knoxville... and I can tell you it was a sad day here yesterday. I couldn't help but tear up during his news conference. I agree he will not be out of work long at all. Phillip Fulmer is a good coach and even better man!
- kennyem, on 11/04/2008, -0/+10none of your tuition goes to the football team, they are a separate financial entity from the university
- charmaniac, on 11/04/2008, -0/+6I can't believe they would be stupid enough to get rid of Coach Fulmer. His record is 150-51, he brought them a national championship and two conference titles. He has had a tough couple years, but he is also a really good coach. TN just set their program back a few years.

You: 4 friends
A sad fact of Digg. - NastiN8, on 11/04/2008, -2/+7The vols have been going downhill for the past few years. Thankfully the Titans are turning up the heat!!
- steelclash84, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5He may be broken up now, but I think he'll feel better when they buy out his contract for $6m.
- jlkinney, on 11/04/2008, -1/+5If you think for one second that Fulmer will be going anywhere in Alabama you are mistaken and obviously don't know much about the SEC.
- kaldrazidrim, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4i live in knoxville- these people live for college football. this is a pretty big deal around here.
- dudz2888, on 11/04/2008, -4/+7As a UT student, I think it is about time! He and his players talked about football not being about winning, it was about the relationships of the coaches and the players. I think a big chunk of my tuition goes to him, I even had to pay for tickets to home games this year (which is a first in UT football) and I expect at least a few wins. This has been coming for a while and I think it is the right step towards getting back on the radar of SEC schools as a threat.
- scout29c, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3None of your tuition goes to football. It’s the other way around. Football in the South is a money maker. Not only can it finance itself, it also helps finance other things like scholarships for students that have nothing to do with football.
You may care nothing for sports and have nothing to do with it, but you benefit from a large football program at your school. Football in the South sucks money into big name universities like a cheap whore on the first night the fleet docks. - apalys, on 11/04/2008, -3/+5Why does this story make it to the front page when I submitted it almost 24 hours ago, about 5 minutes after it broke?

Thanks Digg. You fail. - ousthouse, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3It's sad that most long and successful coaching careers end like this. I hope Joe Pa can go out with a national championship this year.
- davebg8r, on 11/04/2008, -3/+5As a Florida fan and alumni, I am sad about this. I want Phil to stay at Tennessee forever. I enjoyed the nearly automatic win.
Seriously though, how many bad seasons has JoePa or Bowden had and they dont get fired and manage to rebuild their teams. - thegools, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2As a UT fan I've always been confused by Fulmer's coaching in that players always love to play for him yet they seem undisciplined in the fundamentals of football (tackling, running routes, catching passes, not getting stupid penalties). I always thought he could be a legendary coach if he got that right.
That said, I think recruiting is to blame for the downturn in the last few years more than big Phil. There are five other coaches in the SEC with NCAA titles for pete's sake!, two of which have coached in the NFL, which can be a huge leg-up when you go to sit in a kid's living room tell him that you know what it takes to make their dreams come true.
Besides the potential for being terrible for a few more years at least, the part I hate worst is looking like some other programs with a winning tradition that have an over-inflated ego thinking they should have the hottest prom date and you end up with some douche like Saban or Petrino all in the name of winning.
I'm just waiting for Peyton to retire from the NFL and then come to coach UT. Haha! - redneckblues, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3I go there too, and he was getting paid way more than he should have. Still, sad to see him go.
- Jeepinator, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2The guy you replied to says, so i assume some other people think so also.
- nattylife, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2yea im a gator all the way, but geez, this guy is like in the top 5 winningest coaches and he gets the boot after a couple bad seasons? you dont see bowden getting hosed over at fsu... though he prolly should... hes getting to that ripe old joepa age...
- Clemson, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3Umm, what hole do you have your head stuck in? The popularity of college football has been on the rise for the past several years. While it is important for schools to focus on their academic programs, the money that the athletics departments raise should get funneled back into athletic programs. Rest assured - tuition payments do not go towards coaches salaries.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2He has turned down so many NFL job offers to stay with UT all these years. I'll be sad to see him go.
- Jeepinator, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2If Fulmer comes to Auburn he will be assassinated. He won't be coming to Auburn.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Most everyone on digg wants a cookie.
- tacojohn48, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1All of the renovations to the stadium were paid for by the sales of the new luxury skybox seats. Stop making UTK look bad by running your mouth about what you don't know.
- bmoore622, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Thanks, Phil! http://thanksphil.blogspot.com
- Anathapendika, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1He makes almost more money then anyone on the pay roll at UT. Volunteering sounds like a good idea. I think he has a road and a bunch of other things on UT campus named after him to. Its unfortunate that football brings in so much money, and because it brings in so much it gets the most. Hardly any of the profit from football or basketball goes to the physics dept or psych dept or chemistry or even agriculture for that matter. All these departments and colleges at the University could make better use of it. Maybe Phillip Fulmer leaving is the change UT needs. Besides UT sucks have we won one game yet this year?
- tacojohn48, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Goodbye Phil, can't say you didn't see it coming. At least they didn't do you like they did Johnny Majors. (Majors had a heart attack and they fired him while he was out)
- jordanlgta, on 11/04/2008, -0/+129-9!
- bosoxrock, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Tennessee's downward slide really began in 2005 when UT got beat by Blake Mitchell.
http://soxandcocks.blogspot.com/2008/11/*****-and-f ... - Fragger404, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2TBITs,
When professors make the university as much money as the head football coach they'll get paid the same.
There are plenty of profs over there (I'm an alum) who make ALOT of money due to their research bringing in a chunk of change.
Your argument is old and ignorant. - whoreable, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1If they can't pay him, he could always volunteer.
- TBITS, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Students are not seeing the money, that is the whole point. UTK just had a tuition increase, students are no longer provided tickets even though they still have to pay the activities fee, the university is reducing and in some instances removing academic programs altogether, and yet we can give fulmer a raise and make luxury addition to the stadium. If the football team made less for themselves and more for the school, I (a student) would support them.
- bworp, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1gives them a national championship and they force him out.... Tenn should take a look at Penn State, they had off years but Joe Pa is back on top.
- apalys, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2Sad, yes. Lame? Even more so.
- Spuy767, on 11/04/2008, -1/+1My wife is gonna be pissed.
- Clemson, on 11/04/2008, -3/+3Wanna cookie?
- MendotaLee, on 11/04/2008, -2/+2I hope the vols suck for decades after this...
- apalys, on 11/04/2008, -1/+1Well, a bammer made it to Digg. Shocking.
- FearisFailure, on 11/04/2008, -2/+2They have been trying to do this for 15 years the only reason he kept his job last year is because he donated a million to the school because his daughter was still enrolled This year is daughter is a senior go figure..
- kisea, on 11/04/2008, -4/+4Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer!!!
- Anathapendika, on 11/04/2008, -0/+0I made an omelet for him once though...nice guy.
- apalys, on 11/04/2008, -1/+1Who thinks or says that he is????
- Tngirl5777, on 11/05/2008, -0/+0Wow! Before next season I hope all you whiners can come to the realization that it's going to take UT a while to climb back to the top; a change in coaching staff is NOT going to bring overnight changes! I'm sure all of you will be the same ones whining next year when they don't play 'to your standards'.
And for all you idiots who think Johnny Majors was handed a sh*ttier deal- Wake up! He was a drunk who couldn't keep his mouth shut. That's why he was sh*t-canned! At least Fulmer can walk away with pride for his accomplishments. - Tngirl5777, on 11/05/2008, -0/+0well spoken...
- TheEngineer2008, on 11/04/2008, -1/+1Your submission didn't mention the fact that Fulmer was forced out, which is what was interesting about the story. Also, your description doesn't say anything about the article. Rather, you just posted your opinion. That's fine if that's how you like to submit, but that's not what gets the front page.
As for my digg friends, this is a social networking site. However, of the 255 diggs this article received, only 74 are from friends, and 74 diggs won't get anyone the front page. I had many diggs from others. - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -3/+2Beat your wife then end up in the slammer? That sounds about right for Alabama.
- apalys, on 11/04/2008, -2/+1Yeah, it's old news! I frickin' submitted it!
http://digg.com/football/University_of_Tennessee_F ... - lukeamotion, on 11/04/2008, -2/+1OLD NEWS! This happened more than 24 hours ago!
2nd they are just going to do the swaparoo... Fulmer to Auburn, Tubby to Mississippi State, and Croom to Tennessee. - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -2/+1Give'em hell, Alabama! Roll Tide!!!
