- aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Not good. Not Good. LT wanted him to stay and made that very clear. Also, Rivers DOES NOT need this much coaching mix up for his 2nd season as a starter.
Not good at all.... - spizike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Madness. He's going to get hired by someone in a week. I bet all the teams that just filled jobs are kicking themselves.
- shirtninjay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Holy sh*t.
/stunned - XISUPERMANIX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Wait...there ARE browns' fans?
- jculbertson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7As a longtime Kansas City Chiefs fan I can tell you that this is the best move that San Diego can make. Marty has a long long history of taking the best team in the NFL and losing in the first round of the playoffs. He did this twice with the Chiefs who were 12-4 and 13-3. There are some coaches who just don't have what it takes to win the big game and Marty is one of them.
- chip0wa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6true, but the chargers had that game won. There were just too many on field mistakes and the Patriots capitalized upon them. It is kind of lame that coaches get blamed for player error.
- bootlegged, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Firing Marty is the best move the chargers could have made during the offseason. Marty continually comes out short in the playoffs, and this is the second time he fell short while having the arguably the best team in the NFL.
Nothing more needed to be changed, the Chargers are still one of the top 3 teams to make it to the Super Bowl next year if they stay healthy. - FlaG8r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, that time Marty fumbled on Denver's two was some really bad coaching.
- Thumper13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Your obviously an idiot. Look above you to see how a Chiefs fan knows and understands the situation. My only problem is that they didn't do this weeks ago, and hire Cam Cameron as HC.
Pay attention little kiddies. The Head Coach is that, THE HEAD FREAKIN coach. He takes the blame when a team plays like idiots because he didn't coach well, ESPECIALLY in-game.
I will not miss Marty and his one year amazing journey. I think the team played above Marty's skills, and it wasn't until the offensive play calling was turned over to Cameron that this team really started to tear it up. He was a bigger loss, not boring 'ol Marty.
God, I can't believe I agreed with a Chiefs fan. That won't happen again soon. :) - TheSportsWriter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is absolutely crazy. I really wasn't expecting this. I really thought that he would at least stay for another year. This could be bad for the San Diego staff for needing to fill in an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, linebackers coach (correct me if I'm wrong), and now the head coaching spot. Wow.
- MatthewDuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Browns shall rise again. Don't give up faith, Dawgs!!!
We don't want Marty back, but we'll get Cowher next year. Perfect timing too, because the Bengals will all be in jail, the Steelers will suck again, and Baltimore will be in the old folks home...and all the while, me and my dog Bernie will be eating milkbones and drinking beer, cheering on our boys in the brown and orange... - SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ Dogtown7
No way in hell Marty would join the Raiders. He's the biggest Raider hater out there and enjoys slamming you guys. - Chargers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As the details come out there is some sense to it all. The Chargers GM not wanting Marty to let assistants interview for non- head coaching positions, as the whole point of keeping Marty another year was to retain to the continuity of a strong staff. Marty let them interview anyway. Even thought the GM did everything in his power to not allow these coaches interview it was like Marty wanted them to leave. I guess the final straw was Marty wanted Kurt Schottenheimer, his brother, to become the defensive coordinator. His brother has never been a defensive coordinator or coached for a strong defensive team. As shocking as it is, the dynamics changed and something had to be done quickly. Look back at the year Tampa won the Super Bowl you will see it was John Grudon who took over a very talented team. Lets hope this will be similar.
- shirtninjay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't forget the tight ends coach, Rob Chudzinski, also went to the Cleveland Browns to be their new OC.
- Dogtown7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why didn't they annnounce this earlier so the Raiders could scoop him! at this point, I'll take an early play off exit over what the raiders have done... when did coaches become younger than me anyway
-disgruntled Raiders fan - nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love the Chargers, but I have always hated Spanos. That money loving bastards sometimes doesn't even seem to care about football, he just wants his construction company to build a new stadium and make more money. The fact that he has to own a football team to do it is an unpleasant side effect.
- Garageband, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Marty was consistently bad in the playoffs. He lost with the best team and football and it was a team built for the playoffs. Yes, it was to the Patriots but he has had his chance(s) and it was time for a new coach. I would also guess that they wouldn't have done this without calling a certain coach in Souther California and getting a commitment.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm usually the first to blame the coach, but you really have to blame the players on that playoff game. Marty did everything he needed to, the players just kept making really silly mistakes (and you can't expect to win many playoff games doing that).
- FlaG8r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...and maybe name him Brian?
- Venator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thank the lord!
I want a super bowl trophey, marty chokes under pressure!
Chargers '07! - SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they were gonna fire him.. why didn't they fire him earlier! I sooooo wanted Cam Cameron to be our head coach! Now what? ***** AJ. You put your personal problems in front of a whole organization and a whole city.
No Offensive Coordinator
No Defensive Coordinator
No Head Coach
Expired contract with San Diego
It's gonna be a long year. - Joel32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'Wait...there ARE browns' fans?'
Good one.
Moving from NE Ohio to Bham, Ala., I was NOT suprised to find a Browns Backers club here. We're everywhere, and we support thick and thin. Unfortuantely it's been more thin since we've returend, but we suck it up every home sunday to tailgate and watch at our Browns bars.
Dare I say the most dedicated fans in sports? I would say outside of the Packers, Cowboys, Steelers and Raiders (san a handful of others) not other team in the league would have the fan base we did if their team had left and come back. It's a proud, blue collar city and that's on display year round including every summer camp when we pack the practices in Berea.
So keep rooting for your Seahawks, or Panthers, or whatever flavor of the year you want to... - SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh God.. please
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Damn that coaching staff is comparable to swiss cheese right now.
- bitmanx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Marty still walks away with a ton of $$$.. The Chargers are toast for 2007, way too much disruption for any team to handle and they will be lucky to make the playoff's. I wouldn't be surprised Marty takes a nice break on ESPN and lands another coaching job in 2008 after a half dozen coaches get axed..
- shirtninjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"...Our kicker is a choker, must try to make contact." The NFL is a young man's game.
The first part of your comment was funny, but then you went on talk about Nate Kaeding. It was not Kaeding's fault by far. Sure he missed the potential game-tying field goal, but that was 54 yards deep in the fourth quarter. There were A LOT of stupid penalties, dropped catches and fumbles that cost 'em the game. But there shouldn't be any blame on the kicker.. ok, maybe a very tiny bit. Perhaps, you only watched the end of that playoffs game. - powlol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow. Well this came out of no where, well considering they just said he'd return a few weeks back.
Its going to interesting to see where he ends up. - scoot87, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've never seen a team as high caliber as the chargers were last year just had complete depletion of their coaching staff. I wonder how this will affect the Chargers next year.
- scoobydiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm stunner...oh well they had a good season and next looks dark.
- quickjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bill Cowher?
- bwroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I knew it would happen soon. Marty is great at creating the foundation, but not winning in the playoffs. Since the days from Cleveland, he's consistently been unable to pass the playoffs. He had the best team this year and great teams for the past few years. He always develops great defenses and top offense especially they're running game. He'll be hired elsewhere because of his abilities to win. He would've been a great fit in Dallas.
- rda52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they now need a miracle, if just marty wouldve gone they would be alright, but the lost all the coaching staff. the Chargers are in for a tough season in 07 :s
- RaysinX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's definitely not fair, but he and the General Manager don't get along at all... it was just a matter of time
- b0neman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Kiss the Super Bowl or even the playoffs GOOOD BAH! Letting our coordinators and our head coach go in the middle of a successful run is organizational suicide. Oh, and guess what, we're in the middle of trying to get a stadium built in a town that has no money and no credit. What company in its right mind is going to come up with a billion dollars for a stadium for a losing team? Good bye San Diego Super Chargers, hello Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or San Antonio Bolted Outta Towners! Marty was due to win some time. Look at perennial losers like Cower and Dungy. It took them **years** to get to the Big Game let alone win it. I think that 5 and 13 BS is something that the prognosticators like to harp on knowing full well that it is extremely difficult to field winning teams in the NFL year after year. Marty is one of the few that has consistently won. It's definitely a SAD SAD day in Charger Town...
- nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No "we" are not trying to build a stadium, Spanos and his construction buddies are trying to get the public to fund and build a stadium that no one really wants. I knew this season was too good to be true, and it was all confirmed when they lost in true Chargers fashion. It was comforting to see the usual Chargers back on the field, where the bounces don't go there way and the fumbles always happen at the worst possible times. Those wins over this season were some fluke in the universe, those wins just don't happen in SD.
- flaterates, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They'd get along much better if he would win in post season.
- opelgt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DUMB dumb dumb dumb
A "dysfuntional situation" just got alot worse!
How to ruin the best team in the NFL in one rash move ? See Chargers front office.
Good luck trying to find anyone near the caliber of ol' Shotty anytime in the near future!! - catfud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hopefully Ron Rivera will be gone now
so Singletary can be DC for da bears - kgoyette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not shocked, both coordinators went elsewhere, he probably decided he wanted to call his own plays (that would be scary). Really though, him and GM AJ Smith never got along, and don't be surprised if they have a coach in mind already...
- ghjkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this was going to happen sooner or later...
marty and AJ were not going to coexist much longer anyways.
its a fresh start, but as long as sd keeps its core players (shouldve kept donnie) on O+D things should be alright - thedave108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here in San Diego, the fans are not pumped about anybody except Pete Carroll, Jimmy Johnson, and a late 3rd choice Balt def Cord. Ryan. Any other retread like Norv or Mora would produce a pretty backlash locally against the team.
- SansSociety, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The coach takes way too much blame in the playoffs. I can understand coaches affecting seasonal records, but I don't think it was Schottenheimer who contributed to the 10 or so dropped passes by Chargers receivers.
- 1dog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'd like to see William Shatner coach the Chargers. He's pretty versatile. Coach's log game two into the season. "Upon breaking out of the cover two, have now discovered a new problem. Our kicker is a choker, must try to make contact." The NFL is a young man's game. I say take one of Marty's cell's and grow a new young Marty in the Lab.
- JackyTreehorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Wait...there ARE browns' fans?"
We are loyal Browns fans. If you don't know why Browns fans exist, you don't know what it means to be a true fan.
Personally, I'd love to have Marty coach the Browns again. Maybe Bill Cowher would have a better chance of at least getting to the Super Bowl than Marty, but the thought of Cowher coaching the Browns turns my stomach. Anybody want to register http://www.hiremarty.com? - brockoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uh oh, looks like Norv Turner might have a head coaching job after all.
- JesusIsSatan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Highly unlikely the Chargers would be able to match a 14-2 season next year anyway, but now the Schott firing is going to bury the GM as soon as they lose their 3rd game. I see a 10-6 season - tougher schedule and Denver and KC can only get better. Typical corporate b.s. - it's more important to have a "yes man" instead of a competent but feisty coach. I don't think Bill Bellichek or Parcells could've survived as coaches in SD either...not with a-holes running the show.
- sehc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just hope the team gets someone that know how to run the football. The football offense needs good running football plays to ex cell in the playoffs, you got to run the ball. Coaching football is not rocket science, too many make it harder than it shold be. www.winningyouthfootball.com
- sureshk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is very goodfdgfdsgfdsg
- jk1991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Poor Management and Decision making. Chargers should have done this more swiftly while the pool of coaching talent was strong and before they lost all the assistants.
- TrialByFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On the surface this certainly doesn't bode well for the Chargers, a team full of talent but now without stable leadership. This sort of shaking up can have a largely adverse effect on player development and overall success for a team. Given Philip Rivers' seamless transition into a solid, if underexperienced starting QB, it would be bad to see him be forced into learning a new, more complicated system than the one run by Schottenheimer and former coordinator Cam Cameron. But on the flipside of all that, a new coach could be just the boost this team needs to get over the hump of the playoffs. Similar systems to the ones previously used would be preferred, but who ever said a team couldn't adapt and overcome such a hurdle in a single offseason? It's been done before, and I am confident the Chargers and the league's most explosive offensive player (Tomlinson, of course) will remain favorites not only to win their division, but to move deeper into the playoffs now that the stigma of Marty's Playoff Curse has been lifted.
