- rodbro, on 07/28/2008, -8/+36it would have been better for him to just remain retired and go out in a classy manner without controversy.
- whiteknives, on 07/28/2008, -8/+29Wasn't he supposed to retire at the end of the last three seasons?
- FelixdaaHack, on 07/28/2008, -3/+24* Note to pro athletes: Think twice before making an announcement about your big grandiose retirement
- Serenikill, on 07/28/2008, -3/+21I don't think he realizes how crazy some of his fans here in Wisconsin are. Favre just sees football as a game that he wants to play, if the packers don't let him play he will go somewhere else. End of story, good for him. My opinion is the minority in Wisconsin though, lol.
- xL0Sx, on 07/28/2008, -4/+19What a Drama Queen...
*sniffle* I'm reitring *tear*....Wait no.. I need a ring
*sniffle* I'm retiring *tear*... Wait that one didn't count.
*sniffle* I'm retiring *tear*... Can I play for someone else? - yourgiftsfree, on 07/28/2008, -4/+16***** you. Two of my friends died starting an internet meme.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -2/+14Uh, very misleading description.... the Packers GM Ted Thompson asked him to delay his arrival so they can try to setup a trade and avoid a media circus over the first few days of camp. Are you even following the story?
Better article... http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=350714 ... - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+7retired players generally don't go to camp.
What we're not hearing is the Packers side in all of this. When Farve announced his retirement back in January, they started retooling their offense. That means picking up free agents, drafting people that will fit the new system. By the time Farve had second thoughts, the Packers management was well on its way to building the team around Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers and Farve are different QBs. Rodgers fits best in a West Coast style attack that spreads out the defense with a mix of short passes on the flats, short middle and corners and inside/outside runs, sweeps. You'll see them run one back, pro set, I and shotgun formations.
Farve is a classic drop back passer- some might even call him a mad bomber. The style that best fits him is a vertical passing attack with speed on the outside and backs & TEs as safety valve receivers. Ideally there is a strong running back capable a rushing for 1000 yards plus and a short yardage runner to take some pressure off the passing game. You see a vertical passing attack coming out of the pro set or shotgun.
These two different type QBs take different personnel types like a possession receiver (like Steve Smith at Carolina) VS a burner like Randy Moss of the Pats. Both could play in either scheme but a possession receiver is absolutely necessary to a west coast attack.
The same is true for backs who will have come off of blocks, catch short outlet passes and make the most of the run. In a vertical attack, backs have to pick up blitzing linebackers.
There's A LOT more going on here than the Packers management being obstinate. They've made a huge investment in their team and decisions that will last over several seasons. They simply can't pull the plug on it all.
Not that I don't love and respect Brett Farve- he's a fellow Mississippian and Golden Eagle (Southern Miss) as I am and I'm very proud of him. He is just in a no win situation.
----------------------
BTW- there is a rumor afoot that Brett Farve will end up at Atlanta as a free agent to help a very young team come together and tutor Matt Ryan as the Falcon QB of the future. I would think it would be an idea place for him to play and serve a useful role. - mizatt, on 07/28/2008, -2/+7Brett Favre signs with Washington Wizards
- BennFriedrich, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5Sadly, I think it's too late for that.
- totorototoro, on 07/28/2008, -6/+10Aaron Rogers should just request a trade, right now. He is in a lose-lose position here-If Favre comes back, he's going to get booed until they put Favre in, and if Favre gets traded, he's going to get blamed for usurping the position. Nothing less than a Superbowl victory would help Rogers at this point.
- Tribis, on 07/28/2008, -9/+13***** you... two of my friends died reporting to Packers training camp.
- icurnvs, on 07/28/2008, -3/+7Yea, it started here:

and continued here:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Digg_We_Have_a_Problem_P ... - grapesofbaath, on 07/29/2008, -1/+5We don't dislike him because he wants to play somewhere else, we dislike him for making an ass of himself over and over when he had plenty of chances to return and didn't, and tried to ***** over Rodgers to stroke his over-inflated ego.
- Ryan166, on 07/28/2008, -2/+6go brewers!!
- DeskFlyer, on 07/28/2008, -4/+8All I know is I live in SE Wisconsin and I'm sick off hearing about him. More time should be spent covering the surging Brewers, who are starting a huge four game series with the Cubs at home tonight.
- TopPairNine, on 07/28/2008, -2/+5The truth is favre did nothing wrong.... so he wants to play again. For those of you that don't know the Packers have been trying to force out for a couple of seasons now.
I don't think anyone has the right to tell him what he should do. - inactive, on 07/28/2008, -5/+8Can someone tell me how this new meme got started?
Also, does anyone else think that digg/internet memes are getting more stupid and lame? - BNeu, on 07/29/2008, -3/+6Favre for President!!!!
- allnone, on 07/28/2008, -5/+8He needs to keep his ass at home and enjoy his retirement.
- bullox, on 07/28/2008, -2/+5The Packers were 13-3 with the youngest team in the NFL last year - Favre included. They are stacked again this year. Having Ryan Grant the full season rather than just half of last year (once his contract gets worked out) will help a lot in the running game, and their 2nd rd pick, WR Jordy Nelson, will only add depth to a top notch receiving corps that allowed Favre to have his best season in a long time last year. I won't even mention the defense. This team is about a whole lot more than Favre.
- wonderboy, on 07/28/2008, -2/+4I think most people here in Wisconsin support the decision to start Rodgers, and would like to see Favre traded (not released) if he wants to play somewhere else.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2Very rarely is it possible to follow a legendary QB and be successful. Steve Young followed Montana but I can't think of any other success stories. Usually they were collapse stories. Maybe Farve => Rodgers will be another exception. That's why they play the games.
- tipstoyou, on 07/29/2008, -2/+4Im not to thused about Favre he does the same thing every year. This year when he did that emotional speech I actually believed him.. stupid me. Its about time he lays off football and moves on with his life. He did it all let Rogers do something
- jeremyosborne81, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2I can think of another success story.
Tom Brady followed Drew Bledsoe. Sure, he never won "the Bowl." But Bledsoe built the Patriots to the level Brady inherited. - cadmiumpaint, on 07/29/2008, -2/+4I really want to see Farve play again...for somebody. He's still one of the best QB's in the league, and the way the Packers have treated him, after all he's done for the team is embarrassing. Yes Farve has been Neurotic....does that mean you just turn your back on a guy who's never missed a start, who's one of the all time great QB's, who just had one of his best seasons?
I understand the need to move on, but you only get a QB like Farve once or twice in a franchise's lifetime. Plus the Packers are setting up a dangerous prescedent. What all pro would ever want to play for a franchise that tells future hall of famers under contract that they can go ride the bench? They'll never get another franchise star to stay there while this management group is in control.
I want to see Farve go to another team and lead them into the playoffs, while Aaron Rogers leads them to an early vacation and a .500 season. - napk, on 07/29/2008, -1/+3It's amazing to me how quickly people on this site trash one of the best to ever play the game. I'll just assume you're all VIkings and Bears fans.
- napk, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2A much better article.
- legendxx, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3lol? The stockholders already met and said they didn't want Favre. A diggers phone call isn't going to do jack.
- copaceticZ, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2hey all of you idiots who will be happy to see Favre go. Take it from a Dolphins fan you will be a lot happier with him at home. I remember before Marino retired we used to actually win a game or two now it is horrible. I think a few more years of an old ass Dan Marino would of been better for everyone and for you to not let one of the "Greatest Quarterbacks EVER" play as much as they want is just retarded. Maybe they want to move the team ha.
- Yoblad, on 07/29/2008, -1/+3If you really think the Packers should drop everything they're doing and planning for one guy (who is retired btw) then you need to stop fooling yourself and realize you're a Favre fan NOT a Packer fan. Favre has been holding the Packers hostage for what? 3 years now? He's one of the few people who could actually get away with that kind of ***** simply because he's so good.
Anybody who can see past the tip of their damn nose should be able to realize the situation that could unfold here.
Let's just say that the Pack starts Favre. In doing that they pretty much lose Aaron Rodgers because he's not going to wait around for Favre's drama to end. They've completely invested in Rodgers and have built the offense around his play style now. This has been coming for many years now. Rodgers is ready and the team is ready. Starting Favre sets the entire team back 2 years. The Packers management is looking to the future (which is their job btw) instead of wasting precious time on a single player who can't deal with being a regular person. Let's say they start him. How long will that last? What if he has a bad season? Will he become discouraged and retire at the end of this season? Where does that leave the Packers? Screwed that's where.
They asked him to ***** or get off the pot because he couldn't decide if he could commit 100% to the team and he chose to rest his weary cheeks in retirement. Favre hasn't been playing for the Packers and breaking records as some kind of huge favor to them. He was poised to retire as a legend in Green Bay and now he's completely soiled that and this really shows that he doesn't give a damn about the fans. Now he has caused a media circus and hurt the Packers organization at a crucial time when they should be preparing for the coming season with their new quarterback.
The Packers want to move forward with the future of the team but they aren't completely without their dignity. They refuse to let him go while he's still under contract and then have to compete with him in their division. Lambeau field will burn to the ground if Favre's jersey is retired and honored while he's standing on the field in a ***** Bears uniform and they know it. People have to realize that the Packers are the only non-profit community owned team, hold the most league championships in history, and have been around since before the NFL. We love our superstars but as a community owned team we like the concept of team more. The Packers do not revolve around a single person when he flip flops around and tarnishes their reputation.
-Pissed off in Green Bay - zStunna, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3I hope he does still play somewhere (ideally, Green Bay) this season. Favre has fun playing football and he is fun to watch.
- grapesofbaath, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2He already retired with a GB jersey on. He made his bed, and needs to lie in it.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1I wish I could retire into obscurity like Farve with superbowl rings, MVP trophy, tons of records and divsion titles out the wazoo. He's a bone fide first round selection to Canton and you can put money on it... unless he bets on football and he's not that dumb.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1He loves the game, he's in great shape and his body has a few more good years.
I think he is going to be a part of NFL in the future in some capacity like an offensive coordinator, quarterback coach or maybe a head coach.
He's too shy as a person I think to be a part of the football media and I don't think he would be happy in that capacity. - napk, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Dude, we'll still beat you with Rodgers. Our 3 year non-starting vet will take your boys to the woodshed.
Grossman? Orton? Come on. - akeldama, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1That's Super Bowl RING, singular. You know, the same number of rings Trent Dilfer has, ONE.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Brewers would be fine, if they were back in the AL.
- strong2345, on 07/28/2008, -4/+5Brett Favre is the Packers. Football season in Green Bay is going to be great with all that snow and a non-winning record.
- CerMakAlot, on 07/28/2008, -1/+2Hey man, it's okay if you don't understand any of this stuff. But you could try to RTFA.
- wonderboy, on 07/28/2008, -1/+2You do realize he built the youngest team in the NFL, and they were one play away from the Super Bowl?
- MarkusDee, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1I think if Favre wants to play for the Pack then management is retarded not let him. The man is gold for the franchise. He is chasing records, and continue others with every game started. Do you really want to see him retire with a non-GB jersey on? I don't. As for him being too old don't forget he almost took the team to the Superbowl last year. I am a Packers fan and I want to see Favre in GB this year.
The Pack's upper management is really pissing me off. - zStunna, on 07/28/2008, -1/+2I can't see any way that he will back up Aaron Rodgers. I would prefer that he stays on the team to do so over retiring, but I really want to see him play too. Paying Favre $12,000,000 to back up Rodgers is probably something that the Packers will not end up doing.
- dugans, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2Go Cubs and Brewers, cant they both win
- stevealford, on 07/29/2008, -3/+4@jshooter1377: As someone who just crushed up and snorted two vicodin, I can tell you definitively that any better-than-average NFL quarterback with a strong arm and mediocre decision-making skills could have his longevity and career records if they incorporated his vicodin dependency (he was addicted for years, which helped him never miss a start [vicodin is a painkiller]). All the people sucking Favre's dick and fawning over his accomplishments fail to realize that his career TD:INT ratio is horrible and his highlight reel of big plays is due largely to his propensity to go for it all when it's the worst idea (football-wise), which creates disaster as often as triumph, and is also the source of his amazing collection of low-light clips.
@zStunna: I agree completely... and it's actually 12.5 million, not 12. - mizatt, on 07/28/2008, -3/+4No one is going to blame him for anything at this point. He's about to be the starting quarterback for the Packers and his offensive line provided enough protection for Favre to succeed even at a 77 years old. Rodgers would be an idiot to leave now.
- sloo, on 07/28/2008, -2/+3haha, so true.
- inactive, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Everything he is doing is because he loves the game. I wish someone somewhere would be smart enough to give him a shot at coaching. He strikes me as the kind of guy that would make a great coach.
