- beahmad, on 07/15/2008, -39/+117Just go away. I hate when sports stars pretend to quit to reaffirm their importance. Favre was great, he was ***** amazing, but this is a douche move.
- PullingTeeth, on 07/15/2008, -3/+50I don't know what would be weirder, seeing Favre play for a team other than the Packers, or him as a backup.
- nevetssav, on 07/15/2008, -4/+38I feel badly for him. Try to imagine your entire life being one thing, and one thing only: football. From high school to 30-something, you've spent 20 some years of your life learning, knowing, and immersing yourself in the sport. 13 years of your life with one team - not team, but family - he goes home, feels the emptiness of his departed father, brother in law, and sits on his tractor in a farm in mississippi thinking "well, now what?" You can't spend the last 50+ years of your life doing nothing but sitting on a tractor, ribbon cutting ceremonies, and remembering "the good old days." How do you give up everything that's embodied your life?
So now he wants back - he should be willing to play out his contract, but he's coming back to play ball, not to second string. It's stupid he's making a big funk out of this - he could stay quiet, consult rogers, then get traded away before the real season starts. It makes me sad to see a conflicted hero cause so much collateral damage.
Grass is always greener, I suppose. - howdareyou, on 07/15/2008, -4/+38I'd rather see him in a There's Something About Mary sequel.
- Lazyboy0172, on 07/15/2008, -8/+39'packers being dishonest'...
didn't you say you were retiring? - ericjohnson0, on 07/15/2008, -20/+49He's been jerking everyone around for years with the prospect of leaving and then coming back... He went out pratically on top with a boatload of records and a superbowl ring...
Sorry Brett, time to go buddy. - Chode2235, on 07/15/2008, -8/+24Stay classy Chicago.
- Lax32, on 07/15/2008, -5/+19They aren't going to start him because he already told them he was retiring and they want to give Aaron Rodgers the job (who, I might add, was a 1st round pick and has waited 3 years on the bench). They also aren't going to just release him because he could go to another team like the Bears or Vikings and possibly spoil their chances at a superbowl. Its a business, he doesn't get to do whatever he wants.
I'm personally sick of all his drama. Thats really what his entire career has been now that I look back at it. First he got kicked out of Atlanta because he was showing up hungover to practice every morning and asked everyone to sympathize with him. Then he had his whole prescription pain killer addiction and he asked everyone to sympathize with him. Then the last couple years he has been contemplating retirement and every year screwing over the Packers by not telling them if he is coming back until late, and he once again asked us to sympathize with him. Now he told everyone he is retiring but apparently wants to come back, and I'm not in the least bit sorry for him. - wonderbriefs, on 07/15/2008, -2/+15The prospect of Brett retiring was up in the air for I dunno, the last decade. Then when he finally did it, it was like, "okay, time to close that chapter and start a new one." What's he doing talking about coming back? I just don't see that there's a graceful way to do it. If he goes to another team you can bet that the people of Green Bay are gonna be bitter at him. If he comes back as a starter for the Packers, a lot of the fans will be divided over whether or not he's preventing some new blood from rejuvenating the team. The best idea in my opinion would be for him to come back as a backup, but even then he would seem like some old relic that we can't just let go of. He may still have some game in him, but after talking about retirement for this many years, then finally doing it only to try to pull a Jay-Z, that's a bad move.
I've really got to wonder, how much did he really want to retire in the first place? Was he really trying to play up his image by retiring and making a comeback, or were the coaches really putting the heat on him to get out? - slifty, on 07/15/2008, -17/+29YEAH! That guy is such a douche bag for wanting to continue to play a sport that he obviously loves.
Now that I think about it, people shouldn't be allowed to change their minds about anything once they decide to stop. - Trendecide, on 07/15/2008, -0/+12This is completely reminiscent of my life with porn.
- mlvassallo, on 07/15/2008, -0/+10Isn't Brett aware he is on the cover of Madden this year? If he plays he is going to get injured anyhow.
- Chode2235, on 07/15/2008, -4/+14We'll take him on the Vikings. That would be F'in hilarious if only to beat the Pack twice.
- inigomntoya, on 07/15/2008, -1/+11He should read a page out of the Steve Young/Joe Montana play book. He has hit the high point of his career - he needs to call it quits before he becomes a washed out/injured has been.
However, if I were the owner of another NFL team and I was watching Favre ride the bench - I would make an offer he and the Packers could not refuse. There is just too much talent to bench. - Chaotics, on 07/15/2008, -2/+10Ya.. because it would be completely unlike a Packers fan to bash a Chicago player.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+9I liked him better on vicodin and whiskey.
- leetninja, on 07/15/2008, -3/+10he did - then he changed his whiny mind and wanted to play ... this is the THIRD time he has done this
- mpete510, on 07/15/2008, -7/+14Brett Favre,
Man up and play, or retire. It's that easy. Stop wasting everyone's time. I am sick and tired of watching people talk about you on Sportscenter. - Submerge, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6You should be begging Favre to come to Chicago. All you guys have is Orton and Grossman, both are even bigger jokes than Favre wanting to come back!
- Kolbeck10, on 07/15/2008, -9/+15I can't believe some of you guys can't see past the Packer PR on this subject. Ever since Ted Thompson took over as Packer GM he's been trying to force Brett Favre out the door, thus the great strain with which Brett has had to make his decisions. Of course, this past year, after the tough loss against New York, Brett was still feeling the effects. Ted Thompson wants to put in Aaron Rodgers, his FIRST draft pick as GM. Thompson's ultimate fate as a GM relies on Rodgers producing, something he can't do while he is on the bench.
Perhaps Favre was hasty to retire. I do believe, however, that he has every right to come back. If retirement wasn't everything it was cracked up to be, he can do whatever he wants. Ultimately though, I don't believe Favre retiring was legitimate. There is a reason he never filed the papers for retirement, he wanted to keep playing. He needed someway to either return to the Packers, something that is unlikely with Thompson as GM ("Sure, come back as a backup to a guy with 0 career starts" basically means "GTFO plz"), or get traded to a team with Superbowl potential. - Veretax, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6The packers are idiots if they don't either bring him back to compete for the starting job...or trade/release him.
- tkonopkaz06, on 07/15/2008, -2/+7Your comment makes no sense. Steve Young was forced into retirement due to head injuries. Joe Montana played from KC well after his prime.
- modsuperstar, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Trade him to the 49ers. Lead them to the playoffs, mentor the young QBs they have and ride off into the sunset after this season.
Pipe dream I know, but a guy can dream can't he? - nevetssav, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6It's like if that girlfriend also gave the best head you could possibly receive in the forseeable future. Go with that one, or the shaky, experimental chick that's talked a lot about blowjobs, but never actually given one?
Cute metaphor, though. - badfrog, on 07/15/2008, -5/+10I didn't want him to retire in the first place. Now he's just jerking everyone around and making himself look bad.
- phoenixshard, on 07/15/2008, -4/+9I was leaning more towards whining crybaby myself.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -2/+7Someone get you an imagination and some creativity!
I would punch you for your trite, elementary-school ***** if I could. - Submerge, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5The thing about being a backup is, he almost brought the team to the Super Bowl last year. So very close.
- adamcrigger, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5I have such a man-crush on this man.
- leetninja, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6yes but why would that count for anything when you cry on TV and retire you can just say "hey guys just kidding im back!" and then everyone will love you again right?
- souporjoe, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5if i were him, i'd be alright with coming back as a backup. how many int's will rodgers get to throw before they bring favre off the bench ala kurt warner?
- Haasmosis, on 07/15/2008, -3/+8Don't choke in Big Games. Then the Pack will want you back. Since the Superbowl loss, nearly every single playoff run has ended with a Favre InterceptionFest. Thanks for the good times, but we need new blood.
- marcduke, on 07/15/2008, -2/+7That's a bunch of garbage and you know it. Take your blind Favre hate elsewhere.
What he's doing now is terrible to both the Packers and his legacy but don't even try to say he wasn't a great QB. - Jakeman21co, on 07/15/2008, -5/+9In the last 5 years he has thrown 100 Int to his 128 TD. Not too good. Add in another 11 fumbles over those 5 years and an avg 85 QB rating and you can see he is losing his touch. Sure i will admit he did a great job last year, but i think his best days are behind him, and which ever team he comes back for will be worse of with him.
- marcduke, on 07/15/2008, -3/+7Please show me where Ted Thompson has tried to force Brett out. Maybe by building a great young defense to support him so he doesn't have to gunsling every game? Or maybe by assembling a young core of very good receivers - so many that they installed a 5 WIDE FORMATION?
Favre points out that he lost his "Trust"(not even sure if that means much these days) with Thompson because:
A. He didn't try hard enough o get Moss into Green Bay
B. He didn't resign Rivera(broken neck) and Wahle(overpaid)
C. He didn't bring Mariucci in as coach(I'm all for fellow Yoopers but Steve is in over his head at the NFL level) and hired McCarthy. You know, the guy who was Coach of the Year runner-up?.
Looks to me that Thompson was right on 2 of those 3 things. As well as the Javon Walker situation(which Favre made worse) and reviving Charles Woodson's career.
Thompson runs this team, not Favre and not the Green Bay Favre fans. Brett needs to start acting more like man and less like a child who isn't getting his way. - akatherder, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Here are some interesting stats from last season.
28 TDs, 15 INTs, and a 96 passer rating.
Total yards: 4th
TDs: 6th
INTs: 9th
Rating: 6th
I'm sick of Favre, but you can't argue with numbers and wins. - nojingoist, on 07/15/2008, -9/+13I don't feel sorry for him one bit. I'm usually a player advocate over owners/management, but in this case Farve is someone who is an attention whore and has been overrated for years. I don't dislike the Packers at all, and I think they'll be better off with Rogers anyway.
Favre's good 'ole boy routine got tired long ago, and the media's been swinging on his nuts the last decade and a half. - PullingTeeth, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4akeldama: Nobody calls him Mr. 288. More people care that he's thrown 442 TD passes.
- serif69, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5Alex Rodriguez is the Pack's new QB? News to me...
- admdrew, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4I like everyone better when on vicodin and whiskey.
- dizturbd2, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Joe shoulda never went to KC. My rookie card was worth much more his last season with the 49'ers than any time he spent in KC. Brett will always be my fav, but go out ON TOP, not when the ride starts going downhill.
- enders, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4ok...
- nevetssav, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3He's trying to play - the team he's played with for years says "we've moved on [from our hall-of-fame legend in 4 months]." Rodgers should sit for another season, and the GM and Coach shouldn't let Favre slip through their hands. If nothing else, get Favre to play every other game - god knows Rodgers won't step up right away.
- B3000, on 07/15/2008, -6/+9So I guess all that crying was for nothing?
- ChaosProfessor, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4that makes no sense spend millions on Rogers let him learn from the best there has ever been and then give him away no way he is going to be a great QB one of these days
- jodofashodo, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4Everyone, it's Rodgers, not Rogers...
- Migito, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3I would say that it's a stereotype that all of us Mississippians own tractors, but then I remembered that I mowed the lawn with mine just today...
- Locnar, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4Ok, Bad move on Favre's part. He should have thought a little harder before he decided to retire.
BUT!
This guy can still play, Why the hell wouldn't the Packers want him back? And if its because they think he can't play any more whats the harm in releasing him? If they feel his replacement is a better QB then let him go and he will fall on his face...
All I know is there will be hell to pay in Cheese town if he goes...He is a God to Green Bay.. and there the only city that OWNS there franchise outright.. There gm best be looking for cover and a new job.. - herbertstrasse, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3TRUTH. I saw the cover and thought, "oh, well this is a first. I guess we won't have to worry about the Madden Curse this time." Bad, bad things could happen if he comes back.
- mlvassallo, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3I believe the Packers are saying No to him. That seems to be the problem. Well... his problem.
