- cogitocogito, on 02/10/2009, -0/+10The NFL is getting 21 BILLION in TV revenue. Why on earth would they risk any of that for a few million?
If there's an ugly scandal, it might knock 3 to 4 billion off their next contract. Even if they were to make $30 Million (a good fraction of vegas NFL profits), a measly 1% chance of scandal would make it a bad bet. - billizm, on 02/09/2009, -2/+10Doesn't the NFL get enough money?
- sockpuppets, on 02/10/2009, -1/+7I tried your method and got raped. I don't think he was a bookie.
- rockforever, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5There is a difference between allowing it, and having the NFL endorse it though. I don't think its a good idea for them to get a cut. To many problems along the way. There fingers are already deep enough.
That being said, I support legalizing betting on sports on a large scale in every state. Why bother making it illegal, everyone does it. - krc1, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6There's no way to prevent this. Anyone that thinks a person that wants to bet can't get a bet down is very naive. Especially a player with the contacts they have.
1) Walk up to the bar in any sports bar (and most other bars) in this country.
2) Watch a game on the television for a while.
3) Turn around, scan the room, see who makes eye contact.
4) That's a bookie.
I'd rather have it legalized and overseen by the feds than the mob. - JackpotCity, on 02/09/2009, -2/+6The problem with sports betting is that sometimes players can get caught up in the action with very undesirable results. As long as there are ways to prevent this, I don't see why the NFL shouldn't also get a small piece of the pie.
- crazzy88ss, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3NHL?
- Hellman109, on 02/10/2009, -2/+5Here in Australia there is sports betting on all sports.
Every sport has a rule - no official can bet on any match, no players can bet on a game their team plays in.
If caught, which many have, they get a ban, generally a year or two for first offenses.
Keeps it clean while allowing betting. - TheEngineer2008, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2The link seems to be down right now. The article is also at http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601093&am ...
- omgwtflawl, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Whoah! Since when has the NFL been opposed to gambling? They might oppose it publicly, but why do they force teams to give their official roster several days before the game has begun? Its not the "being honest to our fans" ***** that they will tell you. Its so the oddsmakers in Vegas can pick a line.
- Taiyoryu, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1The NFL's cut could come from using NFL trademarks for promotional purposes, not necessarily a direct cut of the proceeds.
- chromerium, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1^ *snork*
- PolicePeople, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Read your comment out loud to yourself and tell me you believe that. I suppose professions such as being a musician or an artist or an astronaut are only about money as well? Sports and professional athletics have honorable and storied histories millennia old.
The internet can make people say stupid ***** and think they're the most jaded ***** on the planet sometimes. - rockforever, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2I don't think it should be illegal for gambling, except where there is an obvious conflict of interest (players or officials). I do think that the NFL does NOT deserve a cut. Regulating it would be to much of a problem. I think that we should legalize it and tax it, but I do not think there needs to be a cut given to the NFL for this.
- fandyllic, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Buried. Yeah right... and credit default swaps and (bad) mortgage backed securities had nothing to do with the economic crisis.
- Jericho6, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I'd agree with many comments here. The negative publicity and innuedo associated with gambling could lead to problems, problems the NFL doesn't need when it's raking in cash through other avenues.
That, and I'm not sure how the NFL exactly makes money here. They'd have to run their own sports book, and why bother? The casinos don't need the NFL in any form to make money on sports betting and the non-sanctioned bookies certainly don't need the NFL. So how exactly do they get a cut? They can't exactly just set-up gambling in stadiums as that's a violation of pretty much every state law. - Uzo84, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1The NFL needs to stay out of gambling. As it stands right now, gambling is free marketing for their sport, representing potential ad-dollars in the 8-figures range. No need to mess that up by getting involved.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2This is the main argument against putting an NFL team in Vegas. NFL players seem to have more off the field problems than any other pro sport. It would seem to be a giant mess if you allowed them to go to Vegas to play a regular season game every week. Too much trouble to get in to and you've have half the players in the league betting on their games when they pass through town. That home Vegas team would be a trainwreck of off the field problems. Imagine what mega disaster Plaxico or Pacman could get into if their teams traveled to Vegas for that weeks game.
- kolop1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Wouldn't this just encourage the NFL to fix games?
- HappyScrappy, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I was thinking more of the officials, as the poster mentioned. I was thinking of this because of the Italian football scandal two years ago.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Italian_football ... - Hellman109, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Some in the racing history have had 10+ year bans.
Cricketers who just gave pitch information to bookies, but placed no bets, got 2 year bans.
Sportsmen generally have short careers, NFL for most (sans kickers) is one of the shorter ones aswell. Your taking away a couple of their most profitable years of their life - phyzixphairy, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2Yes, it's always a shame when entities place morals before profit.
It's not like people don't place bets on the game anyway. I'm sure if you watch it with your friends you can get down for a couple hundred. But to me it's just fine if the NFL doesn't want you to take out a second mortgage and lose it.
First of all, people enjoy rooting for "their" team. If you add money, it ruins it, because then it is not about the team you like, it is about the team you think is going to win. Second, it's not like there isn't enough fan-hate already without people minding their wallets too. Third, it makes it harder to keep players/refs clean. - HappyScrappy, on 02/10/2009, -1/+1I'd to a year or two ban for a couple hundred thousand dollars, easy.
- PolicePeople, on 02/10/2009, -2/+2YES!! Let's add to the notion that professional athletics are all about the money!!
- urisch, on 11/17/2009, -0/+0I pretty much agree with Uzo.

http://www.bulovawatch.us/ - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -2/+2well, it is...what part of PROFESSIONAL do you not understand?
- jmill987, on 02/10/2009, -2/+2I can't really get into a sports game unless I have some kind of bet on it.
- TheBellows, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0There are plenty of other countries that have legalized sports betting, England and Australia are great examples, and it has worked out fine. As has been mentioned, all you need to do is impose restrictions on players, coaches, and officials from betting on their games. Are there going to be cases where a player, coach, or official breaks those rules?? Yes there possibly will be, but you punish them and move on. If the penalties are severe, you will cut down if not eliminate these problems.
Americans puritan fear of gambling is so comical. It is treated as if it is this evil, corrupting force, that taints everything it touches, and corrupts those who indulge in it into addicted fiends. This is so far from the truth it's almost scary. There are always going to be people that take it to far, and gamble when they shouldn't. But that is true for absolutely everything, there are always people that will do bad things, and people that will do things when they shouldn't. Just because they are stupid and can't control themselves, doesn't mean that the rest of us shouldn't be allowed to responsibly gamble. I bet on many different sports when I have the means, because it adds a level of excitement to the games, and it makes me watch sports and events that I might not have watched. If I don't have extra money and can't afford it, I don't bet. It's pretty simple. - TheBellows, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0Apparently you've never put a bet on sports. MOST PEOPLE don't use bookies. Bets are made online or at Casinos and Sports books. Bookies represent a very small fraction of the gambling industry, and have virtually no power over sports these days.
- CCCPSpy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+0What's even more asinine is, gambling (poker, sports betting) is banned in states for moral reasons or whatever, but I can buy State run lottery/scratch tickets, and play State run Keno games.
I guess it's not immoral if the State gets its cut. - inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+0yup...ultimately they are. PRfessional musicians need to make money. As much as they can. Same with astronauts. They can do that work in other professions, or even as a hobby. they choose to do it as an astronaut.
- garyi113, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0I'd guess that less than 5% of NFL bets are done legally in Nevada. Why would you when you're taxed on your winnings?
- pacman122, on 02/10/2009, -2/+1I would say legalize crack but the CIA already has the market
- Flaptastic, on 02/10/2009, -2/+0Somehow I just don't trust 'experts' on business or economy right now, I wonder why...
...OH YEAH, I almost forgot...our economy is in the crapper because a lot of smart people thought it would be a good idea to allow unscrupulous individuals to make broad financial decisions without any level of oversight or regulatory laws. Sports betting was outlawed for good reasons - bookies, and their bosses, can't be trusted not to 'sway' the decisions made in high profile games. - astyguy, on 02/09/2009, -4/+1America ... have a bet on the premier league instead !
- HappyScrappy, on 02/10/2009, -5/+2Why should the NHL get a portion of the money bet? If I were a casino I wouldn't pay them. It would just cut my profit margins. Why pay when you don't have to?
- Uthman, on 02/10/2009, -5/+2Gambling has more ills than benefit;
Lets just put it this way -- if casinos (eg the main centers of gambling) made more winners than losers, they would be out of business.
Sure, one in many will walk away with small sum of money.. but is it really worth the amount that everyone else will be losing? - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -3/+0There is a lot wrong with this argument. First of all, does he really want the NFL to take official bets? How would this even happen? Have betting windows at the stadiums like a ***** race track?
And secondly...ooooh! $81 million! That would be on average a whopping $8 million in additional profit! Or about 90 seconds of commercial time during the same. - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -6/+1Why not link directly http://www.epiclosers.com/
