- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -10/+37RIP Bo. We'll bring it to OSU for ya.
- jlclevenger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22WOLVERINES: Sorry for your loss, Bo truly was part of the great tradition of college football. Rivalries and all, football needs men like this.
BUCKEYES: I am one of you, I understand he was from up north but he was still a person. Don't forget he also coached under Woody. Sometimes we have to put the field aside and mourn for the humanity. Tomorrow is all about the field and will be the time for the Scarlet and Grey to gloat, not now at the death of a legend.
I expect we will see a well deserved moment of silence at the Shoe tomorrow. - FreddieFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Agreed. I am a little embarrassed by the comments of the more immature of my fellow Buckeye fans.
The rivalry with Michigan is a treasure and one of the great benefits of living in this state. Bo and Woody made that all happen. The thing I always found amazing is that while OSU fans may reserve a lot of scorn for their rival up north, that rarely carried over to Bo. Fans really respected if not actually LIKED the guy. It was sort of how the north regards Robert E. Lee with respect and an American general rather than as a traitor to his own.
Bo played for Woody at Miami and coached under him at Ohio State. Just a few days ago, he told some WONDERFUL stories about his time with Woody. On one occasion while reviewing tape of a tough loss to Michigan, Woody picked up a film projector and threw it across the room saying "No fan in Columbus should have to watch such terrible play!" Another story he told was of walking the streets of Cleveland at night with Woody during an alumni dinner after he learned that the OSU faculty had voted to prevent the team from playing in the Rose Bowl.
Bo's son lives in Columbus now and his married to a firm Buckeye fan. Their wedding cake featured likenesses of "The Big House" and "The Horseshoe". You have to admit....that is awesome.
Come on Buckeye fans. Pull it together. What would Woody and "The Game" be without Bo? This is a major loss of fabulous coach who co-created the greatest rivalry in sports.
Learn something from Tressel. Act like you have been there. Hand the ball to ref and treat the rivalry and your opponent with the respect they.....and he....deserve. - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Why would you do that for something like this? If anything, this will likely add a ***** load of fuel to Michigan's fire in the game tomorrow, so if anything the passing of Schembechler could likely make the game a ***** load harder for OSU tomorrow. Go Bucks, but damn people, show some respect.
- jeff823, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20A very sad day indeed here in the Wolverine state. Bo will be sorely missed.
Even though I was born a Buckeye, I've lived up here in the Mitten for the past 21 yrs. It took awhile to get used to the Maze & Blue.....but I'm true blue, thru and thru.....
RIP - bmcnally, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Goodbye, Coach. You will always be remembered.
- FreddieFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Are you serious? After waiting for him to give Millie a hug, Woody handed him a beer, told him to sit down and they started trading football stories until the game starts. Then....they will have to make sure there are no kids nearby because the expletives coming from that particular cloud with be many and fierce. Woody will be wondering why Smith is throwing the ball so damn much and Bo will be questioning why Michigan isn't putting more guys in the box.
- rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Holy crap... this band is going to have to lay low.
http://deadschembechlers.com/
They've been all over the news... this weekend being their biggest yet - JRumph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11He spoke at my graduation from U-M. That was the only reason I went. From a Wolverine fan through and through, we lost a great man today.
RIP Bo and thank you for all you did for that program. - labbrat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I think in addition to remembering him as a coach, we should remember (or learn, as the case may be) that Bo did some great things for the community as well. Just one example - his wife, Millie, died in 1992 of adrenal cancer (which is ridiculously rare), so he raised money and set up an Adrenal Cancer Program at UM and an endowed chair in his wife's name.
RIP Bo. - kilmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I really do hope they try to do a moment of silence for Bo tomorrow. I am sure the disrespect from the predictable Buckeye crowd will anger the already awaken beast some more. I still can't believe he has passed away.
Hail to the greatest victor of them all. - glhex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8All rivalries aside, it's sad to hear Schembechler passed away. It's a loss both for UM and OSU because although we each love our teams, we love college football.
Tomorrow's game is what college football is all about.
O.H.! - KrypticOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm a huge OSU fan and will be rooting for them tomorrow...however, this is definetly a shock to everyone and couldn't have been at a worse time. It's a shame he won't be alive to witness what is easily going to be one of the greatest rivarly matches between the two schools. Bo was definetly a great coach and I am sure he will be missed by both OSU and Michigan fans as he was part of this great rivalry. RIP Bo.
- 6502programmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I totally agree on HIPAA. A nurse is, as an employee of the hospital, bound by HIPAA. Further, because he's a famous football coach, he has no right to privacy? If Kobe Bryant goes to get the warts cleared up, should it be okay for a nurse to let her friends know about it?
On a personal note, it's too bad to hear about this, especially before the most important OSU/Michigan game in quite a while. For the sake of sport, I hope that the U-M team isn't adversely affected. - LLXerxes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How mature. Every pro-Michigan comment is getting dugg down.
Rest In Peace, Bo. Coach, legend, Wolverine. - modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Wow, now I'm sure the Wolverines will win tommorow. Sad to hear of his passing. Go Wolverines! Win the National Title for Bo!
- Conway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6From The Dead Schembechler's Myspace blog:
"The band is crushed to learn of the death of Bo Schembechler. We named this band after Coach Schembechler to honor him as the face of Wolverine football. We have never wished ill will upon him in any way and have always wished him the best. When we learned that Bo had seen our web site and was amused by it we were delighted. We were simply delighted. He said to those with him as he read it, "See, I still matter in Columbus!" That may have been the greatest understatement in football history. We believe that he took the band's name as the compliment that it was meant as and that he was flattered by it. We wish to extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to his family. We are truly sorry for their loss" - deerhake11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8RIP Bo.. college football will miss you
ps - this doesnt mean we're gonna take it easy on your boys tomorrow... heh - bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I had wondered how long it long it would take for some bucktard to show his/her true colors. Rest in peace Bo.
- FreddieFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Regarding the Columbus band, The Dead Schembechlers......
They have a pretty large concert/fan rally scheduled tonight. The band is obviously a riff on the Dead Kennedys and their songs are pretty darn funny. They all dress up as Woody. They are getting a ton of press and ESPN was sending a crew to cover the event. (Bo even laughed at them when talking to a Dispatch reporter at the press conference earlier this week.)
But I have to imagine those guys are gathered in a room saying "What do we do?" Even though the intentions are pure, if they hold the concert it's going to get twisted out of proportion. Folks on this board would have a field day. (See people in Ohio really ARE evil!!!) Talk about the ultimate bulletin board material. I think they HAVE to cancel. If I am the OSU president, I am calling over right now and encouraging that to happen. - scuzzman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Football has lost a great coach, and an even greater man. RIP Bo, you did great things, and will be sorely missed. Mass respect and much love from the Buckeye state.
- djrobnm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here in Michigan people have been calling in radio stations from all over the world to give their respects and tell their stories about Bo.
Apparently he wasn't only a coach, legend, Wolverine, but one of those people who always had time for others and genuinely cared about everyone around him and as such made those people that much better.
On the radio, some body's father died recently (I don't know who) and Bo talked with him for an hour last night about just that, not about the game or the team or about football at all. Bo wasn't one dimensional. - halik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9RIP Bo,
go blue, wherever you go. - djrtitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"A part of the University of Michigan died today with the untimely passing of Bo Schembechler.
Few people exceed their reputations. Bo was the exception. He was forever dedicated to Michigan, to our students, our alumni and our fans.
His contributions on the athletic field are legendary. Yet Bo's impact at Michigan goes well beyond the hash marks of Michigan Stadium, and we should always remember the depth of his contributions to a university he loved.
Bo was a teacher and a mentor. He was a benefactor who believed in the promise of cancer research at Michigan. And as he showed us just this semester, he was a student eager to learn. He loved the life and vitality of a university, and he contributed mightily to the culture and traditions of the University of Michigan.
Bo believed learning and excellence went hand-in-hand. He helped to shape the lives of generations of U-M students, and that is a timeless tribute to the dedication he showed our university.
"Leadership" is part of the Michigan lexicon. Bo helped to make this so, both on and off the field.
Never again will we know the likes of Bo Schembechler. And while we are saddened and stunned by his death, we are also filled with the gratitude that comes with warm memories. As individuals and as a university community, we enjoyed the privilege of knowing Bo and benefiting from his irrepressible personality and loyalty. He made Michigan a better university." - Mary Sue Coleman, University of Michigan President - paulmike3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"A friend of my family who is a nurse has called to say he passed away..."
HIPAA anyone? - nathanlm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He was a football coaching legend.
- bwedeking, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Truly a sad day in Michigan Football and a terrible loss for all of sports.
May the boys in Blue come through for you one more time on Saturday. - ampersand2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow...Bo died where I was born.
OSU is so going down. The Wolverines are going to have the avenging ghost of Bo on their side.
RIP, Bo, and thanks for the memories!! - warox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did you graduate spring '05? If so, greets to a fellow classmate.
Bo's speech at commencement was, as to be expected, a treatise on hard work and perseverance, and the highlight of the otherwise rainy and cold afternoon. The man was a great motivator and an inspiration, as evidenced by his reputation among Wolverine and college football faithful, and by the strong reaction he got from the crowd after his speech. RIP Bo. - FreddieFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would listen to WJR from down in Ohio. JP McCarthy would always inteview Millie....and she was great! I always pictured her as a Barbara Bush kind of person who wouldn't take crap from Bo around the house.
RIP Millie and Bo
You made the rivalry sweeter. - ffletch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thanks for everything Bo.
- matth1jd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Phi Alpha Bo - We'll miss you as a brother, and coach.
- kevinvsgodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You know what happened . . . as soon as Bo entered heaven, Woody Hayes was waiting for him, and clocked him a good one! They're probably still beating the crap out of one another, rolling around, knocking over harps. His passing will make the The Big Game a little more sweeter. We love you Bo. GO BLUE!
- wiredclimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seriously
- dfsiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone in Ann Arbor - memorial on the Diag at 10PM EST. Be there.
- FreddieFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To echo....HIPAA does apply. They drill this stuff into medical personnel. It is major federal legislation and to name call simply for bringing it up is unnecessary. You don't get to pick and choose when it applies or doesn't apply.
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is a sad story. He'll be missed.
Completely unrelated to the article itself, but why do people post headlines with the word "Breaking"? All but a handful of stories make it to digg's front page in less than an hour. Rarely is a story still "breaking news" after this time. News agencies are allowed to say "breaking" because the story is actually BREAKING at the time. Also, consider that these stories are available for ages afterward - if I've been away and I want to see the most popular stories of the last week, I don't want to see "breaking news" from way back when. You don't need to scream "BREAKING" for a news story to grab attention: case in point, "Rumsfeld Resigns" which got about 4.8 zillion diggs in about 20 minutes.
Okay, I'm done venting. Digg me down if you so choose :). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the nurse's name is released, she'll never be able to work in the healthcare industry again.
Be very careful. I work in a hospital and know that when a very famous scientologist actor was in, we had to be VERY careful what we talked about. - sfcaptainrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're a Providence baby too eh??
RIP Bo. You will be missed. Schembechler hall is going to be a lot quieter without you. - Gimli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Being a life long Michigan Resident, I'm a Michigan Fan, root for MSU when they're not playing Michigan. As such I've never rooted for Ohio State and never will, I remember a supervisor saying that he was rooting for Ohio State to win the National Championship because it would be good for the Big Ten and bring in $$$, I said I could careless about that I'm a true Michigan Fan and will never root for Ohio State. Now before all you Ohio State fans bash me, don't you say to yourself "Hmm, I'm a true Ohio State Fan and I'll never root for Michigan'. The passing of Bo Schembechler has put a damper on today's game in a way, for there are going to be people on both sides root for their team and feeling awkward about doing it. I hope the following helps out, I having a feeling that Bo and Woody are going to be sitting together somewhere on a cloud in heaven, watching today's games, and rooting feverishly for their team to win. I remember watching press conferences of Woody and Bo, each of them ripping on the other team, specially Woody (I found him to be funnier than Bo when it came to this), but you could tell that they were only horsing around with the media. So don't hold back in your rooting, for I'm pretty sure Bo wouldn't want that to happem (same goes for Woody).
- pcslugster, on 10/12/2007, -13/+13Wow you are an *****.
All I have to say is.
GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Pat - robertallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think for the Ohio State fans out there who want to show their spirit in their replies on here in a mature manner, remember Bo would expect that. As a Wolverine fan, he was like a grandfather to me...even though I regret never having the opportunity to meet him.
Whether you're a Buckeye or a Wolverine fan noone can argue what Woody and Bo did for the College Football landscape as a whole, not just Michigan and Ohio State.
For those going to the game today, whether you're a Michigan or Ohio State fan, show your school spirit...but act responsibly. Don't cause trouble today. - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You could only talk about reincarnated alien souls?
- carcrazy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Sorry about your loss, Michigan.
I hope the seats are good in heaven, tomorrow's game won't be one to miss!
...I.O.! - pcslugster, on 10/12/2007, -12/+12I really dont think we (THE WOLVERINES) needed any more motivation... but we got it, a ton of it. If we dont win tomorrow, W E W I L L D I E T R Y I N G ...
WE LOVE YOU BO!!!
RIP

On the contrary, this came at the best time. Think about how pumped up they're gonna be for this! They're going to want to win this, for him, for everybody.
Michigan will stay on strong. - swazo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5It's not a question, he really died.
