- plarp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28the dallas cowboys don't play in dallas.. so they still may be the SF 49er's
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19actually pretty sh!thole is not a bad description. I live here in SF. SF gets a lot of props for being beautiful, and it is! Go to the inner city, the Tenderloin and watch all of the transvestite crackheads smoking their pipes and homless people sucking each other off in the street, and it is not so pretty anymore.
- techweenie1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15San Francisco was just too Fabulous for them.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Surprising, since they are among the few people who can afford to live there.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Yeah, I can see how losing a steroid-infested embarrasment to baseball would be a hardship...
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17This sucks.
The first football game I saw with my dad was when I was 12 years old in "Candlestick Park." Just the two of us drove down for the weekend and watched them destroy the Chargers with Joe Montana at QB. It was one of the best days of my life.
This sucks. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10So funny because its so true. You could sell your mansion in Kansas and move here only to find that the most you could afford is a shack made of cardboard. This is cool though, I don't think this area has ever had a football team. The only thing San Jose/SC really has sports-wise (after the Earthquakes left) is the Sharks.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Face it, LA is a horrible sports town. It's no coincidence that the Rams and Raiders both abandoned LA. Outside of the Lakers, those teams get no support. It's one thing to fill a 15,000 seat arena. It's another to fill a 60,000 (or in the Colosseum's case, 100,000) seat arena.
There may be lots of money in LA, but there aren't good sports fans. If there were, there would have been a team there years ago. - FastZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@plarp
..and the NY Giants and NY Jets dont even play in New York state! So I agree with you about the 49ers probably keeping the San Francisco in their name. - grat2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Go to Detroit, where I'm from, and you will learn to appreciate SF a lot more!
- Sparticuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you don't like it then turn off the sports category
- jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11But really, why would anyone move away from Kansas?
- zeeeej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm with you on the politics, but I have a life outside it, and occasionally even put politics aside so I can watch the game. Loosen up.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5same with the Bills... they play in Orchard Park...
- grat2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Now all we are left with is the Giants, Warriors, and Raiders!
Can it get any WORSE!!!!!! - ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think Yorke wanted to stay in SF (just like the Debartolo's) but the city doesn't care about the team as much as the rest of the Bay Area. It's cheap to build in the South Bay. The stadium would be across the street from their practice facility and we have more money in the South Bay.
More accessibility (by public transit and individual transportation) is another reason for this move (if it happens, it's not absolute). This could also be a tactic used by Yorke to get Mayor Newsom fired up. With an upcoming election at hand, this could leave a bad taste with San Franciscans.
Oakland moving to Fremont has some of the same reasons behind it. More money in the South Bay than in Oakland or the rest of the North Bay.
I bet that more fans are STH's living in the South Bay outnumber any other portion of the bay as far as 49ers goes. - wolfzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just a side note: I do realize that the Raiders were originally from Oakland, just so no one flames me for that.
- Jelloman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know dozens of lifelong Niners fans and we ALL hate the Yorks. They continue to ***** things up, year after year. And Niners fans continue to come anyway, mostly. It's hard to tell by ticket sales, because the team always manages to sell or give away all of the tickets every Sunday - the Niners games are NEVER blacked out on local TV, as the Raiders games always are.
Eddie D may have been a bit of a crook, but the fans loved him. He showed up at Candlestick for some halftime alumni thing a couple years ago (or maybe last season?), for the first time in years, and he got a VERY long standing O. Winning will do that.
Of course, in the late golden years of the Niners (Steve Young era), just like the Broncos did in their two superbowl winning years, Eddie D was paying out millions to players under the table to get around the salary cap. That's the real reason the NFL won't be having him back.
Candlestick should be razed to the ground as soon as possible, that stadium is a *****.
They can keep calling them the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, but obviously not in LA. I don't think there's really much chance they will move to LA, it's just posturing. - durzagott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Now, excuse me for being an ignorant Brit, but how the hell can a sports team move cities?! I mean, I know that they are just private companies and they can do whatever the hell they like. But c'mon now!
Could you imagine Manchester United relocating to Lincoln? Or Liverpool moving shop to Norwich? It just wouldn't happen!!! - grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This is so sad. It could've been an opportunity to re-vitalize the neighborhood around Candlestick, which is pretty run-down. Instead, they decide to move it to Santa Clara, leaving SF proper with only the Giants for professional sports. What a disaster!
- Wolfie351, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uh, San Jose/Santa Clara is STILL in the Bay Area. And, I would bet that the majority of fans who go to Candlestick come from the Peninsula and the South Bay.
- Burrito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SF airport isn't in SF, so...who cares.
- Tezgno, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@plarp
Yes, it is true that the Cowboys do not play in Dallas (the stadium is actually in Irving). However, Irving is apart of the DFW (Dallas-Ft. Worth) metroplex (Irving is only about 10 miles from Dallas). The new stadium being built for the Cowboys is about 4 miles from myself in Arlington, TX (still in the DFW metroplex). Arlington is about 20 miles from Dallas and only about 10 miles from Ft. Worth (smack in the middle of them). If the 49ers move to Santa Clara, that would put them almost 50 miles from where they are now. I'm not originally from Northern Cali (I'm from Southern Cali), but have been there plenty of times. I can definitely tell you that with the amount of traffic (and tolls) in that area, a move like that would be terrible. - danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It must suck to be a fan in San Francisco right now. First Barry Bonds goes free agent, now they lose the 49ers.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As a GB Packer fan, let me just take this opportunity to point out that municipally owned teams are a good thing. I never have to worry about the Packers leaving. Too bad they're the only muni-owned team in all of professional sports (in the US, and I'm referring to FB, BkB, BsB, and Hockey).
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Minor League and minor sports FTW.
1) Ticket prices are lower, the average Digger can afford to go to games. Hell, most of us can even afford season tickets.
2) The salaries are lower, so most of the players are in it because they love the game, not because they just want the money.
3) Characters and weirdness. Two words. The Hansen Brothers. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4this is just wrong. they aren't the 49ers without san francisco.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2York is killing this franchise. Hiring Dennis Erikson, drafting Smith, now this *****.
- Glidedon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The City of San Francisco will sue for compensation for use of the name.
- harrisbradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I loved the 49ers so much better when the organization was run by the mob. Ever since then it's gone to hell.
- Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 "Nothing will persuade us to change the name of the San Francisco 49ers, one of the most storied brands in the world of sports," he said.
The 49ers headquarters and training facility are currently based in Santa Clara, located about 30 miles south of San Francisco.
Not too big of a deal it seems to me - cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They have already driven the team into the ground, they might as well drive it across the bay.
As a long-time fan ... I find this depressing. - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The Sante Fe 49ers! woo hoo!
- blurrie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this makes me sad.
i hate the yorks.
i want big d back.
i guess the niner / packer game in dec will be my last visit to monster.. er.. candlestick
=( ::tear:: - grat2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's like seeing Kobe Bryant wearing #24, no matter how you feel about him, it just doesn't look or sound right.
- sdub74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2York said the team would not change its name under any circumstances.
"Nothing will persuade us to change the name of the San Francisco 49ers, one of the most storied brands in the world of sports," he said. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a 35-40 minutes from the old stadium to the proposed location. Unless you're actually starting from SF though I doubt it would take you more than an extra 20 minutes from anywhere because you can take a more direct route and avoid Bay Area traffic.
Incidentally last time I went to a game at Candlestick it took an hour and a half to get out of stadium traffic after the game. Better access to the stadium could help offset any increase in travel time. - SnuKs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That does suck, but I'm not surprised.
I went to a game there for the first time about a month ago [against my Chargers] and I have to admit, the stadium and parking lot are pretty run down. In addition the neighborhood surrounding the stadium is well know for it's gang activity. I do hope the 49ers stay in the bay though.. they're not the 49ers if they're not in the bay! C'mon LA 49ers? No way.. Plus don't even think about changing the name. The team has too much history- - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Happens suprisingly often with the NFL. They go to where to money is. If they can get a good stadium deal where the team owners can get a huge chunk of the stadium income, then they'll move. The league still has to approve it, but I can't recall them ever not allowing a team to move.
- SgtBeavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OH PLEASE move to LA. That will finally end all that speculation of moving my Saints.
Sorry SF. Ok, maybe not
HAHA [/nelson] - BedlamX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I am a 49ers fan but I don't live in SF. So i personally wont feel the impact but Maybe all of the diggers can get their new hero Nancy P to push for a new stadium and keep them around.
- rrouse, on 12/09/2008, -0/+1They will just start calling Santa Clara - South San Francisco.
- linkboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look, here is what this comes down to.
The proposed site of the new stadium (Hunter's Point) is not feasible for the following reasons
A) Lack of Transportation (new overpasses and off-ramps would have to be built, not to mention a huge parking garage). The city is expecting Dr. York to pay the bill for all of this (he has stated that he will pay for the stadium, he wants the city to pay for the infrastructure costs, which they should)
B) Part of that area is federally protected, so a land swap would have to take place with the Federal Government.
The City of San Francisco has been dragging their feet in regards to the 49ers and a stadium for years. Even with Candlestick, they won't solve some problems (one of the parking lots is not paved and it's consistently muddy, due to that are being below sea-level).
Even the Giants were put through the loop when they tried to get Pac Bell built and they ended up paying for that themselves (the city did nothing, but guess who will be benefiting when the All-Star game is played there year).
Santa Clara is a better fit for the 49ers for the following reasons
A) Better access
The proposed location has 3 highways (as opposed to 1), not to mention the tram stations that are nearby. Parking also won't be an issue as there will be ample amounts of parking (as opposed to what the Hunter's Point plan proposes).
B) The team's Head-Quarters and Training Facility are in Santa Clara
The new stadium will be located right across the street from both of those facilities.
C) Fan Support
If the 49ers go with the Hunter's Point plan, there won't be any tailgating options (since parking will be in a garage).
D) The City of Santa Clara is willing to help the 49ers get this plan done (which is something City of San Francisco has been less than willing to do for the past 10 years)
I'm 100% for this move for the reasons I listed above. However, that doesn't mean I'm not opposed to the 49ers still playing in SF. If the city and team can get a deal done, that's great. - NorCal05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1unless you live in the South Bay! If this happens we will have the Sharks, the A's, AND the 9ers. Now about that basketball team....
And it has been confirmed that the name will still be the San Francisco 49ers. - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2San Francisco sounds like an awesome freak show! I can't wait to come fly out and visit! ;-)
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, exactly. It's not like San Francisco is starving for professional teams. Come to Columbus, Ohio, one of the largest cities in the country, where the only thing we can cheer for is a college team. (Granted it's the Buckeyes, but still it's not a professional team. And no, I'm not counting the Blue Jackets hockey team, because *nobody* believes the Blue Jackets are professionals. heh.)
- NorCal05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still bitter about the '80s and '90s?
- scoobydiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's not cool...that's such a huge team to just move....but it has been done before
- ramrod22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bill Hicks
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Angels games get really good attendance. Lots of loyal fans in the Inland Empire, as well as Orange County. Ducks do good because they are the best team in the league right now. (Southern California only likes hockey if their team is hot). Football, I imagine, would do pretty good these days. Although many people are loyal to other teams already. TONS of Raiders fans, shortly after I moved here, the Inland Empire's love for the Steelers has grown quite a bit. (Starting with our 15-1 season, I believe). Lots of KC, SD, Rams fans, too. Los Angeles would be better off with an NFC team.
But thats too bad about the 49ers. Hopefully they don't move too far away from SF. (I would rather have an expansion in LA :P) -
