you buried a projection article as inaccurate?
its a projection! as in, a best guess? an estimate?
*forgot to hit reply sorry* - Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7and Charlie ward! but for different reasons..
- LordHelmet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Jason White won the Heisman and went undrafted.
- jmurrish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The same way that Eric Crouch, who won the Heisman, was not taken in the first round
- patience, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I thought it read "2007 War Draft Projections."
I almost hard a heart attack. Ooops.
I mean I swelled with pride on the
chance to serve. - douggmc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6How can Troy Smith ... as the leading contender for the Heisman Trophy ... not be included in the top 10? I understand he isn't as tall as the prototypical NFL QB of today, but come on!? If he wins Heisman ... he'll be in top 5.
- Moosington, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What year did Charlie Batch win the Heisman again?
Adrian Peterson coming off a broken collarbone, really? Once you break it, it stays pretty soft for good. He'll still be top 10, but I don't see #1, plus, the way Stoops used him for the 2.4 years he played equates to the career of a 5th year senior who somehow managed to play all 5 years. Peterson is an amazing talent, but he is injury prone and I question his ability to stand up to the rigors of the NFL.
Joe Thomas is ahead of Sam Baker, no contest. - kevin_qnn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ Gravytrain6 "as did Charlie Batch"
charlie batch didn't win the heisman and was drafted in the second round by the Lions - sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hardly any defenders get taken high in the draft. It's obviously indicative of flawed drafting strategy, but that's the way it is.
- buddylee415, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice to see Moses on that list.
- honkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ screaming:
Vick is rushing for over 70 yards a game. He's why Atlanta's run offense is racking up more than 70 yards of rushing offense per game than the next closest team. You can't compare Vick to other QBs because they don't use him like other teams use QBs. He's playing the position differently than everyone else in the league.
Personally, I don't think it's the best way to go, but Atlanta is 4-2 so it's hard to argue with results so far. - buddylee415, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Calvin has committed to playing another year. He and his parents want him to finish his education. He will still be amazing to watch whenever he leaves though.
His biggest drawback is that Reggie Ball is a horrible quarterback. - douggmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@LordHelment and @UberNick
Jason White was practically an invalid. No way he could have competed more then a year or two professionally without getting his knees permanently destroyed. - screaminmartin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Troy Smith will struggle in the NFL the same way Mike Vick struggles. He's great in college, but there's a certain criteria that the NFL requires of a QB and Smith will struggle to meet them. The Heisman has nothing to do with it.
- Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is Michael Oher a senior yet?
- ouais, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Calvin Johnson is still a junior and I think he has committed to playing for GT again next year but oh well. Awesome guy though I met him while visiting GT this summer.
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4heisman recognizes players for outstanding college play... but, college play doesnt necessarily translate to the NFL. I was a bit surprised myself, though.
- pantuky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BAH! Way to damn early to project this stuff. Projections are never accurate even the day before the draft. At mid-point 2005 who would have said that little known defensive end named Mario would be drafted ahead of Reggie Bush? You would have been stoned if you said so, but you would have right also.
When you factor in the whackie decisions GMs make, there's no telling what will happen. - turnTaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1two words: Ron Dayne
Carson Palmer and Eddie George are the only two recent Heisman winners i can think of off the top of my head that has had a big impact in the NFL. - cameliaace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LaRon Landry
- Zipko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's way to early in the season to be making preditcions along this line. Even after all of the bowl games are over you still can't make this kind of a list. SI's top 10 is the top 10 NFL talents. But once you start trying to rank draft order an important factor comes into play, namely the order of the bottom 10 in the NFL, and their needs. The top 10 draft picks may likely be most of these 10 players, but you have to wait to see draft order before ranking them.
A good example is how Leinhart droped so far. In a list like this, where you're just picking the top 10 prospects, he ranks high. But when you consider that, after Young went to Tennessee, none of the other top picking teams needed a QB he's going to fall. - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Quinn hasn't proven himself this year, he should not be in the top 10.
- sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looking briefly at the drafts from the last several years, there seems to be an average of about three defenders taken in the top ten. Given how many of them turn out to be busts (again, just looking briefly, it looks to be a higher percentage than offensive players), it's not a surprise that SI's top prospects are primarily on the offense. Furthermore, it's easier to evaluate an offensive player because their impact on the game is much more consistent and generates more sexy numbers.
- Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think its pretty accurate. I have a feeling Quinn might be taken first because lots of the teams with a shot at getting first pick are without good quarterback and have decent recievers (Oakland immediately comes to mind).
Johnson probably wont stay another year though. He might think he is going to, but whats going to happen is this- Someone is going to sit down with him, and tell him that his days are limited. Like it or not, its only logical for him to move to the next level as fast as he can. He has a better chance of making it big, he gets another year to learn and play with a young body. Besides, I hate to say it but Tech is at most going to make a bowl game, this isnt like Leinhart where he thought he could return his senior year and win a national championship. Many NFL players finish out their degrees while playing in the NFL, by the way.
But in the end draft day is always screwy because its all determined on what teams need. Last year is a great example. Everyone has Bush as a shoe in for 1st, but the Texans take Williams because they had no defense and a decent running back. (Well, that and DEs have about twice as long of a shelf life as running backs so they naturally have more long term impact and lots of the great running backs were later draft picks, but that is a different story for another day). - Reidtheweed01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um yeah you're a dumbass. Half of the top 10 last year were defensive. So what the ***** are you talking about none takes defense at the top. The first pick was a Defensive End. Their were 19 defensive players taken out of the 32 in the first round. You're an idiot.
- GravyTrain6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4as did Charlie Batch
- HA5TY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Calvin Johnson is the best player at his postion. He is going to be amazing in the NFL. If he isn't picked first, the team that didn't pick him should be taken away from the NFL!
- mrwhiskey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Believe it or not, Brady Quinn has amazing stats this year. As a matter of fact, his stats are just ahead of where he was last year. He threw 3 picks at in the Michigan game, but did you look at the rest of his stats in that game? He is on course to have a shot at the NCAA career passing percentage record. He only has 4 picks this year and when you compare that to completions and TD's, it is tops in the country for big time QB's. He will do well at the next level.
- Matrixsta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So according to SI, out of the first 8 picks only 1 will be a defender? ......right
- srinivasch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think its pretty accurate.
- Reidtheweed01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah only if he wants to pull a Maurice.
- jmt612, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about Steve Slaton from WV? He's a heck of a back, and speedy. Not included in the list. However, I agree that it is too early to make such predictions, but no doubt Peterson will be a top round draft pick.
- turnTaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i feel Brady Quinn's weaknesses will be exposed over the course of the second half of the season.
being a Cal guy myself, i love that Marshawn Lynch is at #8. - ForfeitTheGame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ screaminmartin
If you knew what you were talking about, you would know that Troy Smith has transformed himself and is nothing like Michael Vick.
Smith's rushing stats in 8 games this year:
36 Attempts, 126 yards, 3.5 AVG, 0 TD - srinivasch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes
- powerover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amen Forfeit. Troy Smith has been playing like an NFL QB all year. He only scrambles to buy time, doesn't let himself get hit, and doesn't make mistakes (2 interceptions, and this is Big 10 football). He leads the undisputed number 1 team in the nation, and is great in big games. Throw 3 or 4 inches onto him, and I couldn't think of an excuse for him NOT to be a top 3 pick.
Yeah, I'm a buckeye, so it may just be bias speaking. As for other people that didn't make the list... I really wish Garrette Wolfe was a bit larger, but I think he could be a decent back, like a Warrick Dunn. Wolfe was able to run all over the Bucks, but then again, we have problems wrapping up. - tqtqtqdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ForfeitTheGame
I do agree it is to early to project. However if you look at the stats QB Colt Brennan is #1 in the nation, If your looking at rushing stats, I'll give you (what you gave) the 8 games first, then 10 games. (Hawaii played only 10 games and Ohio played 11)
Colt Brennan
8 Games 45 Attempts, 194 Yards, 4.3 AVG, 2 TD
10 Games 52 Attempts, 266 Yards, 5.6 AVG 3 TD
Troy Smith
8 Games 36 Attempts, 126 Yards, 3,5 AVG, 0 TD
10 Games 53 Attempts, 206 Yards, 4.0 AVG, 1 TD
They are both great QB, and wish that whoever regardless of positions, who is well deserving to play with the Big Boys (NFL) best wishes.

Guys like Sean Taylor should have gone a lot higher in previous drafts. But to me, the sure things in this draft are the skill guys, Cal Johnson, Quinn and Peterson. Draft any of these guys, and you will get a good pro. Though, Manningham (true soph) will probably end up being better than Cal Johnson.
- nakatomiplaza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think last year was the exception to the rule. Most of the time, who goes #1 is predictable long in advance, regardless of team drafting.
