- AllINeed, on 04/16/2008, -14/+14And it goes much more beyond King David... There's a lovely organic winery somewhere around Jerusalem that produces a fantastic cabernet sauvignion. The taste it outstanding, as long as it's let to air out a bit... now if only I could remember the name.
There's a great Italian kosher wine by the name of Bartinellis, I believe... they make a lovely sparkling white wine that pleases most palates.- Alanr123, on 04/16/2008, -6/+8I think this is the guy right here. The company is Bartenura. Their Moscat is out of this world

(THIS IS NOT SPAM...I have no connection whatsoever with this company, it was the first link that came up when I Googled Bartenura)- ElBeh, on 04/16/2008, -3/+4Mmm, Bartenura Moscato D'Asti is delicious. It also has a very sparkly texture. The red wine is very sweet, but I find the white an unbearable bitter thing. I recommend Rashi white wine for a similar style of "sparkly", but much sweeter tasting for the white wine.
- EarlOfLade, on 04/16/2008, -10/+6I don't buy products from terrorist countries hence I never buy anything Israeli.
- Idiggapony, on 04/17/2008, -4/+7(1) Not all kosher wines are Israeli. Do you have a mindless, irrational hatred of Jews in general, or just of Israel? If the latter, you may be able to enjoy some interesting new wines of which you were not previously aware!
(2) You may want to go and learn the actual definition of "terrorist."- nocre, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4terrorist - one who terrorizes or frightens others.
Not that I agree with his sentiment (I do not), however I felt compelled to respond. Despite what connotations have been lately attributed to this word, the act of terrorism is still meant to instill terror (imaginatively enough) ; a tactic which has been used by a multitude of governments and armies. If a military or government or nation, perhaps, spreads fear into the heart of your respective enemies, it still makes them no less a terrorist or terrorist organisation. Neither side of this conflict (moreso referring to the violence between Israel and Palestine than America's involvement though this is true for us as well) is innocent, and who is 'right' is entirely subjective. Both have engaged in fear-mongering and outright violence. Both are fit to be called terrorists.
That being said, if this 'EarlOfLade' does not buy products from terrorist countries, I imagine he finds it very difficult to shop. Most every 'civilised' nation on Earth has, at one point, involved itself in terrorism, and I'm quite certain he sports a great deal of Chinese goods.- supermanred, on 04/17/2008, -4/+2Yeah, you tell him. Israel is definitely in the top 10 terrorists of the world, you kill one jew, we kill 100 palestinians... Now that's terrorism.
- yr22, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0killing in order to defend yourself is not terrorism. hiding weapon below a sick person in an Ambulance and then bombing innocent kids - is terrorism

- docrates, on 04/16/2008, -2/+19The wines are not Jewish...they're kosher. And might or might not be Israelis. It would be like saying "Christian pork". Wrong in both contexts: The pork does not believe in Christ, and you don't have to be a Christian to eat it.
I'd apologize for being a grammar Nazi, but given the topic it would be of particular bad taste.

- salomejones, on 04/16/2008, -2/+4I hope this story goes far and wide...So many Jews think that Manechewitz is THE choice for passover. It's battery acid, and no one should ever drink it...depending in where you are, it might take some effort to find good kosher wine, but it's always possible. Kosher does not have to mean revolting! In fact, it *should* mean just the opposite.
- rugabug, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1What are you talking about?? Maneschevitz is like grape juice with alcohol
- Fixion, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Maneschevitz is way too sweet. It's a side-effect of boiling the wine, or so I hear.
- ZenMojo, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Are you crazy? I used to get mad slizzard off some cherry Manischevitz.

no pun intended - Cattywampus, on 04/16/2008, -5/+6I consider it a nice change of pace from all the recycled political campaign spam that's always on the front page lately.
It's not all that odd... I mean, Digg *does* have a Food and Drink category, after all. - JesusHatesYou, on 04/17/2008, -5/+3It distracts people from the Jews slaughtering Palestinians. Besides, it's in the Jew York Times, so it must be good. I like their coverage of how we had to invade Iraq for WMDs.
- strictnein, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1It's in the Food & Drink section. So, not really that odd.
- Coffeedemon, on 04/16/2008, -8/+8Kind of refreshing.
- johnomaz, on 04/16/2008, -42/+7As I recall, jews were commanded to purge leven (sorry if its spelled wrong) from their homes in observance of the passover. If it is alcoholic wine, or bread made with yeast, etc etc etc, then guess what, not only are jews in error because they ignore the teachings of our Savior Jesus Christ, but they aren't even observing passover correctly. Go out and get drunk there ya jews, may as well, you're going to hell anyways unless you right your wrongs and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.
- Alanr123, on 04/16/2008, -3/+11You're correct, Jews are commanded to purge their houses of leaven, but where did you hear that they have to purge their houses of wine?
Haven't you heard of the four cups of WINE that have to be drunk at the festive passover meals?
Buried four ignorance on two counts, both about the Jewish faith and whole Jesus rant. - ElBeh, on 04/16/2008, -2/+6A troll, I presume? Four cups of wine is one of the most important part of the Passover seder. In the Shulchan Aruch (One of the law books for Judaism), there are some very interesting guidelines about how much you should drink and how much alcohol each cup should contain. Believe me, wine is perfectly acceptable on Passover.
- Gryffydd, on 04/16/2008, -2/+4Now now, don't feed the troll....unless it's little red thumbs downs....
- proliance, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2Spoken like a true Baptist. (apologies to my Baptist family members)
Lets see...Jesus was Jewish. The Jews have always celebrated meals with wine. The bible makes it clear that Jesus drank wine. Jews today drink wine. Grape juice wasn't invented until the 19th century by Thomas Welch because there was no way to preserve it unless it was fermented. Jesus' first miracle was to turn water into wine when he was a guest at a wedding at Cana. Wasn't Jesus accused of being a drunkard in Luke 11:19, implying that he drank alcoholic wine?
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Jesus enjoyed a cup of wine on many occasions.
- Alanr123, on 04/16/2008, -3/+11You're correct, Jews are commanded to purge their houses of leaven, but where did you hear that they have to purge their houses of wine?
- AlKo, on 04/16/2008, -5/+6All about throwing away preconceived notions that good wine can't be kosher. It's all about the grapes, the land, and the winemaker's skills. Kosher or non-kosher, if you like it, it's GOOOD. Prices are reasonable enough to try out though I think most folks would have a tough time shelling out $68 for a wine that's an unknown.
I really like the NYTimes wine articles overall. Helped me to discover Tavel Rose wine. - nsummy, on 04/16/2008, -8/+16While I'm not going to bury this article as inaccurate, I would just like to say you would be hard pressed to find a highly rated Israeli wine, kosher or not. You are a lot better off buying a wine from one of the better known regions of the world.
- saxreturns, on 04/16/2008, -3/+3'Hard pressed'... pun intended?
- salomejones, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1The problem is one of assurance..."kosher" is a little different than "kosher for passover", which is a LOT more strict. If one buys an Israeli kosher wine, one is buying a wine that is also kosher for passover...but if one buys a kosher wine from someplace other than Israel, it may or may not be kosher for Passover. So while mostly it's possible to follow your advice and get a better wine, during Passover it's not really practical for a lot of people....
- gavinonymous, on 04/17/2008, -2/+0In jewish, that's called a business opportunity. check the liquor stores around here, there's been passable passover wines for a few year.
- FairDinkumMate, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1As a restaurateur & wine retailer I'd have to disagree with your sentiment nsummy. In my experience highly rated wine doesn't necessarily relate to good drinking wine for everyone. Nice wine is such a subjective opinion due to people's vastly differing palates(although I would agree that BAD wine is pretty universal!). That said, I would suggest that EVERY wine producing region in the world(of any size) is able to produce good quality wine. If you are prepared to experiment & try wines from different regions you can find some really nice wines at especially nice prices(eg. Argentina & South Africa are currently producing some fantastic wines)
- rustintable, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0It seems to me that taste in general is extremely subjective.
I am sure that there someone out there who loves the very particular combination of cat piss and gasoline.

- pitlord, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Kosher refers to many kinds of food. The word literally means "fit to eat." For a food to be considered kosher it must meet certain standards that are detailed in Jewish law or what we call "Halachah."

- barry253, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1As mentioned above, who called you a racist? If you find a story "lame," there's a new feature on Digg that allows you to express your opinion via a single click. You didn't really explain what you didn't like about the article. If you don't care about good wine, why did you bother reading the article in the first place?
- Lewie, on 04/16/2008, -1/+4I wasn't going to digg this article just because I'm not a huge wine fan, but here's to spite you:

- SaladCactusKing, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2Yep. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maccabee_(beer) good stuff, too. Not really a fan of Goldstar though http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldstar_%28beer%29
- Elchonon, on 04/16/2008, -0/+0Macabi is pretty good, golstar is a good dark beer. The wine here in israel is good and cheap, teenagers use it to get drunk (prefering it over beer)
- barry253, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1All beers are kosher, with the exception of some flavored "hard lemonade" type drinks which aren't really beer at all.
- EmperorFoo, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0All beers are kosher (without certification) provided they have no unusual processed flavorings that would require separate kosher certification.
- Redleg56, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0Not exactly. Gelatin ( a clarifier) is often from animal sources and therefore traife and stouts are a common type requiring special certification. Obviously beer (and sake), along with any whisky, vodka, gin and most liqueurs are a Passover no go. Anything with corn syrup is also out (b/c its made by a fermentation process -- why is it in factory mayonnaise when my Larousse Gastronomique doesn't mention it?)
Most beers are OK without a heksher but the kicker is the most but not all. Ironically Bavarian beers are fine becuase of their beer purity law.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_libel#Against_J ... - DroidBlender, on 09/18/2008, -5/+6Please, I'm not that sophisticated to make wine out of Palestinian blood. The best I can make is "Pale-Cola". Sort of tastes like root beer. I also like to mix in Christian baby blood around passover, just to make things more interesting. Maybe someone will teach me how to make wine in our next "Elders of Zion" meeting?
- Idiggapony, on 04/17/2008, -3/+5Dude, my kids love Pale-Cola! Awesome stuff.
The wine-from-Palestinian-blood thing is admittedly more complicated. We're having a seminar on that in the May 1 EOZ regional meeting at the Ramada Inn in Syracuse, are you coming? It'll be great, we're having the same DJ as last time. Basically, you want to use a thick-skinned grape like a syrah, so there's enough tannic structure for a nice long fermentation of the blood of the gentile. Try mixing in a puree of the internal organs of an innocent gentile, too, stolen from them while they slept. Kidney is my fave -- seems to activate the yeast somehow.- quarkie, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2can i pick up my new copy of the protocols?
- rustintable, on 04/17/2008, -1/+0We need to start a war against assholes to take everyones mind off of religion.
- Idiggapony, on 04/17/2008, -3/+5Dude, my kids love Pale-Cola! Awesome stuff.
- Redleg56, on 04/17/2008, -2/+0Actually that's Christians who engage in ritual cannibalism and blood drinking as a central religous sacrament. Transubstantiation and Consubstantiation are simple concepts once you know about the Donner Party.
- strictnein, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Ignoring the ignorance of your comments, maybe someday you'll learn that Christianity != Catholicism.
- Ob1masterjd26, on 04/16/2008, -8/+7Let's polarize blame for a terrible conflict in a comment thread about wine, that'll make it better.
- supermanred, on 04/17/2008, -3/+2Yes, we should and maybe it will make it better. Can you imagine if there was an internet in the 1940s and everywhere a German posted anything about anything, someone said "***** off, you peice of ***** Nazi *****".... maybe it would make them think twice about throwing Jews into ovens.
I do the same to Israelis, to remind them that ***** over the Palestinians is NOT COOL MAN! ITS NOT ***** COOL!
- supermanred, on 04/17/2008, -3/+2Yes, we should and maybe it will make it better. - Forcough, on 04/16/2008, -20/+18Boycott Israel!
- mashni, on 04/16/2008, -11/+1Hell yeah! Palestinian, right?
- tuntcickle, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3hehehehehe you're only making it cheaper for us
- caponumen, on 04/16/2008, -4/+4Interestingly enough just because you are Jewish you don't have to hate them, but it is a very FINE line......
- Isoptera4, on 04/16/2008, -9/+10I hate religions of all denominations.
- rustintable, on 04/17/2008, -2/+1dugg
- lyosl, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1How brilliant...
- mashni, on 04/16/2008, -19/+6"digging because i'm jewish"
Down-modded and buried, because you're jewish! - phr3akster, on 04/16/2008, -5/+12l'chiam!
- gavinonymous, on 04/17/2008, -3/+4you don't have to be jewish to love them... but if you're not, it helps if you have some shiksa appeal. (thanks jerry)
- imackid, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2A shiksa is a non-Jewish woman. It comes from Yiddish.
- elister, on 04/17/2008, -9/+6I understand this is in Northern Isreal, but what will be the odds that they'll expand vineyards to former olive groves previously owned by Palestinians, destroyed because it was too close to a Jewish Settlement and posed a security risk. Should give new meaning to Blood Wine.
- addingyears, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3Hopefully none, being that those olive groves were too close to Jewish settlements and posed a security risk.
Did anyone know there was an old meaning to Blood Wine? - pitlord, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2Probably about the same odds that the "palestinians" will destroy the thousands of acres of successful agricultural land that the Jews GAVE them and use it to fire more rockets at innocent Jews.
>.>
That land was given to the Jews THOUSANDS OF YEARS before Mohammed was born and started having schizophrenic hallucinations of Christian versions of Jewish angels in a cave somewhere in Mesopotamia commanding him to kill Jews.
- addingyears, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3Hopefully none, being that those olive groves were too close to Jewish settlements and posed a security risk.
- simplicityiskey, on 04/17/2008, -5/+10Everyone knows Jews naturally make some awesome wine. Look at Jesus--He didn't even need grapes!
- rustintable, on 04/17/2008, -3/+2They also invented propaganda....
- barry253, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1CORRECT! Propaganda was invented in the Intel offices in Haifa, Israel, in 1994.
- supermanred, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2Wine pre-dates Jesus by quite a while, actually. It predates Judaism and Islam.
- rustintable, on 04/17/2008, -3/+2They also invented propaganda....
- tommy68, on 04/17/2008, -12/+6I wouldnt buy anything that makes the jews any money.
- rugabug, on 04/17/2008, -2/+5Go sell your computer as it is probably filled with Israeli designed and built chips.
- tommy68, on 04/17/2008, -3/+2its a toshiba and they make their own chips.
- Redleg56, on 04/17/2008, -2/+2Why does Japan have Hebrew town names? There are some startling coincidences.
- quarkie, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1Intel Processor?
- tommy68, on 04/17/2008, -3/+2its a toshiba and they make their own chips.
- Redleg56, on 04/17/2008, -1/+5Not to mention Dodge cars and trucks, LSD, aspirin, Blatz Beer, latex condoms, and the idea that doctors should wash their hands.
All Jewish inventions and businesses. I hope you also avoid Fender guitars and Steinway pianos, diamonds, TV, radio, etc etc.- supermanred, on 04/17/2008, -4/+2Thanks, I will. ***** Israel. Nothing against the Jewish faith, or Jews, but Israel and Israelis are in the same boat as coward Nazis in my book.
- strictnein, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2Your book sucks.
- supermanred, on 04/17/2008, -4/+2Thanks, I will. ***** Israel. Nothing against the Jewish faith, or Jews, but Israel and Israelis are in the same boat as coward Nazis in my book.
- rustintable, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1Correction those are the inventions of scientists only about 10% of which are religious.
- rugabug, on 04/17/2008, -2/+5Go sell your computer as it is probably filled with Israeli designed and built chips.
- MH94, on 04/17/2008, -10/+6Why can't adblock plus prevent submissions like this? :(
- supermanred, on 04/17/2008, -2/+2There is no setting for Anti-Israeli propoganda.
- washdude, on 04/17/2008, -2/+5what the hell? wine talk on digg??? lmao..this is soo not a digg topic..never tasted kosher wine before but somebody please tell me how they are different? what's so special about them?
- Idiggapony, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3Only the fact that they provided a nice opportunity to engage in gutter-level Jew-hating, something that most diggers can't resist.
- phenolholic, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1uhh, they're kosher
- saturnx8, on 04/17/2008, -7/+6like wine ... yes and what the hell do jews have something special other than making their ***** manochevitz crappy wine? I hate jew wine
- Redleg56, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1Try Baron Herzog from France, Bartenura from Italy. Kosher wine for some reason became sweet stuff in America.
But Americans took beer, which had sustained western civiization since Hammurabi and turned it into canned urine.

- lih65, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1I stopped reading as soon as it said "if I don’t celebrate Passover, does that mean I can skip this column? Sorry, I can’t permit that."
What a prick...
VIVA LA REVOLUTION! - theskyisblue, on 04/17/2008, -5/+5you mean after they took the land from the Palestinians and soaked the soil with their blood?
- DroidBlender, on 09/18/2008, -0/+1You gotta try bagels made out of wheat grown on blood soaked soil. Absolutely delicious!
- barry253, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Yes. It was the following Tuesday.
- supermanred, on 04/17/2008, -7/+3I'd buy Chinese wine before I bought Israeli wine.
- tuntcickle, on 04/17/2008, -0/+3you must really love this comments thread. is this number 10?
- o0joshua0o, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1You can get some great deals on high-quality grape juice the day after passover. I'm serious.
- metalgodz, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1Buried because it's not important enough to deal with the NYTimes forced registration avoidance.
- AngryRobots, on 04/17/2008, -5/+1Kosher wine means only Jewish people can make it. It also means the kosher wine makers are by default racist businesses. If you can ignore the expropriation of lands and violence that is part of any product form Israel, then by all means swallow it down my friends.
- barry253, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Your entire assumption (and subsequently, your hate-filled conclusion) is incorrect. Kosher wine can be made by anyone, and certified kosher by an overseer.
- AngryRobots, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1I love how the anti-semetism hair trigger just goes off. Its reflexive now on Digg. The grievance is purely political. Any attempt to contend this a racist idea is a straw man argument and shows your hand (racist).
- pitlord, on 04/17/2008, -1/+3Totally ignorant. Where I live there are MAYBE 2 dozen Jews in a hundred miles. Yet there is a cheese factory, owned by Italians (not religious but probably came from Catholic background) that makes Kosher cheese. Nobody, who works there is Jewish. They have a Rabbi who comes to visit once a week when they make the kosher cheese. So, tell me more how racist kosher food is.
-_-- AngryRobots, on 04/17/2008, -2/+1My apologies, orthodox kosher wine cannot be touched by those who worship idols or are non-jews.
This must be the reformed wine. Prayer for remittance. What a joke.
dugg down for not actually being "kosher" wine.- barry253, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2You're wrong once again. Kosher wine is boiled or cooked, which allows anyone (non-Jews and their idol-worshiping ways included) to make and sell it. Please, try the racist angle again with some more misinformation.
