- digghandyman, on 04/25/2008, -3/+5That's just nasty. Butt, I mean but less shocking is the fish mismanagement.

- kterrance, on 04/25/2008, -2/+9I guess it's not your imagination when you feel sick after eating out. Gross. All you need to do is eat some diet chips with olestra and you could slide home.
- homedaddy, on 04/25/2008, -2/+11wait? there's nothing fraudulent about using the different names? Given our strange food rules I can see how it might not be illegal but certainly I am being duped.
- KatoHamatsu, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4Just because it isn't illegal doesn't make it right. This is just plain wrong in so many ways, including out the back.
- 1aaaa, on 04/25/2008, -1/+14Something seems incredibly wrong about just getting any fish that can pass for what you asked for. Let alone one that can make you sick. WTF? Who has a say in making sure you get Tuna when you order Tuna and Talapia when you order Talapia?
- tambird, on 04/25/2008, -2/+2I cook with escolar all the time. its not a bad fish at all, never had any 'issues' down there.
- chaosium, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3Somehow I doubt this.

- WasabiBomb, on 04/25/2008, -1/+14My favorite sushi chef introduced me to "super white tuna", or escolar, several years ago. I really liked it, and made sure to pick it up when I saw it at the fish market.
Yeah. That didn't go so well. I didn't know what caused it, so I bought it again a few years later- and had the same symptoms. A bit of research on the fish revealed that a common name for escolar is "ex-lax fish".
It's a shame- the fish is really good. I'm just not willing to put up with the side effects. :)- chaosium, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5That's really the crime. It *IS* buttery and delicious until severe cramping :(
- hoovcluck, on 04/25/2008, -0/+13"Oh, just a little anal leakage, Ted."

-- Oh no? - doublefelix, on 04/25/2008, -0/+9Actually, due to its' insanely high oil count, Escolar is one of the most delicious fish you could hope to find to throw on the grill. Avoid portions over 1/2 pound and you should be fine. I still remember one episode of the West Wing where the 'President' specifically orders Escolar as an entree.
- clippypog, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4Kick his ASS, SEA BASS! Errr..I mean, Escolar
- mechman, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4Oh, *****.

- DiggieDarko, on 04/25/2008, -0/+6That's bizarre, I don't think he understands how things work around here. Maybe he should try some more Butterfish and think about it.

- senf, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2Escolar is my favorite fish, and I order it whenever it's available if I'm having sushi. I usually get 2-4 pieces of nigiri, and I've never had any issues. It's incredibly delicious.
- DiggieDarko, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2I agree, its fantastic. I'm just not going to eat so much at once from now on, that's for sure.

- cowsgonemadd3, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3I will google that "olean" stuff...you would be surprised at just how BAD "healthy" "fatfree" or the like food is for you vs the already bad for you regular food. Take diet vs regular for instance. Diet is wayyyy worse for you and it tastes bad.
- bjornski, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2I agree. I avoid diet soda, margarine and fake sugar. Give me the real stuff. It tastes better and it's not as bad as the alternative in moderation.

- vanebeard, on 04/25/2008, -3/+1I remember reading that the frequency of Anal Leakage associated with Olestra was no higher than that which occurred from eating ordinary potato chips, but because Olestra is a synthetic compound the law requires that they list any symptoms that result from ingesting it.
- bjornski, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2You might have read it, but eat a bag for yourself and you tell me.
I won't eat that garbage again. I did once, and that was more than enough for me thankyouverramuch.- Sludgehammer, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Actually I ate fairly large amounts of Olestra chips fairly regularly, and never had any problems.

- 0crabby0, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Snake Mackeral is also know by the name Oilfish in Atlantic US waters
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oilfish
"Hong Kong's PARKnSHOP supermarket was selling oilfish as "cod fish (oilfish)" in its stores. Consumers ate the fish believing it is codfish, then suffered oily diarrhea as a result. Afterwards 14 complaints were filed against the supermarket chain, leading to an investigation by the Centre for Food Safety. ParkNShop has denied responsibility, claiming the fish is safe for human consumption. Nonetheless, the chain has since stopped selling the fish product" - superduperguy, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5‘White Tuna’ usually refers to Albacore Tuna, which is a better quality tuna with a milder taste. I’d hope that Escolar isn’t being fraudulently sold as Albacore Tuna. If you decide to indulge in Escolar, just make sure not to wear a pair of white pants.
- rushiku, on 04/25/2008, -2/+1At the end of the article, they mention that "over 77% of Red Snapper is something else, mostly Tilapia"... how can this be? Tilapia is a fresh water fish, size and shape of a bluegill (8 inches long, tops), the fillets are thin and the flesh is somewhat translucent and finely grained. Red Snapper is a much larger salt water fish, differently shaped, with thick fillets of white, large grain flesh - and - the telltale red/white checkered skin, if present, is a dead giveaway.
I call shenanigans.- chaosium, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3On what? Many people can't tell the difference between fish, regardless of how silly it may seem.
- rushiku, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I should have also quoted:
"Often times the restaurants and markets aren't aware of the fraud, the fish is often mislabeled at the distributer level."
I have a hard time believing that the restaurant owners and marketers are unable to distinguish between the fish they want and a 'fake', especially in this case.
Anyway, at least everyone who read my post, including you, can now distinguish between red snapper and tilapia. ;)

- longlifenoodle, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1Holy Mother of God! I'm eatin' here - do you mind?!!!
- davekay85, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5It's true, we used to serve this fish in the the restaurant I work at and the staff constantly made jokes about the notorious Escolar. It's actually really freaking tasty, but you shouldn't eat more than 5 ounces of it. That's when the side effects kick in.
- seinkonnen, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4I love esoclar sushi (also known as walu or snake mackeral). I prefer it raw but I've noticed lately that its more common for it to be seared at least on one side (which changes it's taste a lot). Its been banned in Tokyo for like 45 years (for this very reason), so this really isn't news in the sense that its new. Anyway, I _always_ have three to four pieces of esoclar whenever I go for sushi, and I've never had any problems. Tuna has mercury and esoclar makes you poop... Yet I'm still alive after eating lots of tuna and I haven't been forced to drop a deuce because of escolar.
- chaosium, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1"Tuna has mercury and esoclar makes you poop... Yet I'm still alive after eating lots of tuna"
Mercury is only considered an issue because of women of childbearing age.- seinkonnen, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Sarcasm.

- juanchopancho, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4Anal leackage is a euphamism for crapping your pants, right? Or how exactly is anal leakage defined? What quantity of poo needs to leak out of the anus for it to be considered leakage as opposed to a turd?

- cowsgonemadd3, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4Too bad I guess as many others seem to like it. Just dont read it then when you see where its from.
- esaks, on 04/25/2008, -0/+8In Hawaii they call this fish Walu and ate it a month ago and suffered the full affects. The best way to describe the "anal leakage" is this. Imagine every time you fart, you fart out olive oil like a can of Pam spray. When you try to wipe it off, its like trying to wipe off baby oil. You need to wash yourself with soap. I am not joking. It smells really bad, but not like poop. more like really strong mineral oil. I was miserable for 2 days.
- juanchopancho, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2Sounds lovely. Thanks for sharing your anal leakage story.
- mpeters13, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4I was expecting some reference to Alli, a product that provides daily "Orange Anal Leakage." Product works though, lulz. I've lost 60lbs in 4 mo, with exercise and no jitters, etc. But yea..
Orange Anal Leakage. - chaosium, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3I accidentally had some of this at Jimbo's ( http://www.jimbosplace.com/Index.html )
Dark orange should not come out of your butt. - beatleman, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4All I'll admit to is that a little bird told me, but we can confidently add "orange roughy" to the list of fish that cause anal leakage. The little bird said 3 fillets will do it for sure.
- katyism, on 04/25/2008, -1/+0I second this. The leakage happened to me the morning after a dinner of orange roughy filets, and after some googling I determined it was a common and harmless aftereffect.
But based on the orange leakage, they really ought to rename the fish "Orange smoothy." It really helped me have, um, smooth passage.
