- Rassa, on 04/26/2009, -4/+52Down with High-fructose corn syrup. Bring on the real sugar! I saw some throwback Pepsi products made with real Sugar. I don't consume caffeine so I was kind of bummed. I need to write in to coke and tell them I want some Fanta made with real Sugar.
If any of you are really bored go look at the ingredients of random stuff in your house. High-fructose corn syrup is in everything. Bread, spaghetti sauce, ketchup. - immatellyouwhat, on 04/26/2009, -2/+47I always thought galactose was a badass name.
- divinediva, on 04/25/2009, -4/+46Too much sugar in general is nasty stuff.
- IHeartNY, on 04/26/2009, -0/+38Cane sugar is sucrose which is a disaccharide of fructose and glucose.
- GodsTwin, on 04/26/2009, -0/+31It doesn't get converted to glucose... It gets converted to DHAP/G-3-P in your liver, and Fructose-6-Phosphate in your muscles. Sugars don't have to be converted into glucose first. They enter metabolism at different points in glycolysis.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -4/+31High fructose corn syrup has been quietly added to almost everything that Americans consume. Evidence from numerous studies suggests that HFCS causes fatty liver, diabetes and a range of metabolism related problems, this information has been suppressed. Please do yourself a favor and do not buy products which contain that industrial garbage.
- bfeagan, on 04/26/2009, -3/+24I'll never understand the morons that decided to put sugar in juices. IS IT NOT SWEET ENOUGH? [/caps]
- MyMainMan, on 04/25/2009, -4/+2225% of the energy requirement is way more than a normal consumption. The liver can handle some amount of fructose by creating glycogene localy. Above a certain amount these things with lowered insulin sensitivity may happen. I don't think it will have any negative impact at all in normal amounts. Ie eating 3-4 fruits a day is only a positive thing as is normal consumtion of beverages containing fructose. Moderation is the keyword when it comes to food!
- GodsTwin, on 04/26/2009, -0/+17It doesn't get converted to glucose... It ends up getting converted to DHAP/G-3-P in your liver, and Fructose-6-Phosphate in your muscles/kidneys when it enters the glycolysis cycle.
- WoWii, on 04/26/2009, -1/+17What ever happened to regular sugar from cane?
- Abatrour, on 04/26/2009, -4/+20They are both still safer than aspartame.
- pe5t1lence, on 04/26/2009, -1/+17So what you are saying is....

*Runs out of the room quickly* - SeekerDarksteel, on 04/26/2009, -0/+15It threatens the corn industry and thus must by definition be evil.
- YKKonMyZipper, on 04/26/2009, -0/+13Go to a Mexican store that has coke made in Mexico with cane sugar. Then pick a can or bottle at your local store. You can't tell me that Mexican coke does not taste better.
I honestly don't care about what is worse or better for you. Its all about the taste :) - rentmitchum, on 04/26/2009, -0/+12*looks at back of Gatorade Rain Green*
It says it has "glucose-fructose syrup".. I'm gonna die twice now. Great. - mctom987, on 04/26/2009, -0/+12Fruit juice has fructose.
- Rassa, on 04/26/2009, -1/+13I would also recommend that people watch King Corn.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1112115/ - OrangeTide, on 04/26/2009, -0/+11GO US CORN LOBBY!
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9at 1500kcal of energy requirement for my body type, a can of soda has 300+ kcals so yhea thats an accurate study and people have tendency of going for the jumbo glass so it makes it even more relevant. And let not even talk about Milkshakes and other such junk.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9I still think galactose is cooler. It's like galactic lactose.
- Heilige, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9Actually, according to testing if you use plain glucose there are no negative side effects noted but when adding fructose especially from corn then you start to get metabolic problems and in the end the destruction of the body.
- Maksx, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9technically you have, what do you think makes up carbohydrates?
- thefinalsql, on 04/26/2009, -3/+12This study is crap. Does not mention the source of the fructose. There is big difference between high fructose corn syrup and agave nectar for example.
- ngb5012, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8moderation is the keyword when it comes to everything: work, gambling, drugs, alcohol, porn....well maybe not porn.
- skidork, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8...but then i heard of deoxyribose.
- viet10, on 04/26/2009, -2/+10sugars are carbs.
- diggdong, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8It is quite interesting that HFCS refineries will not let camera crews into their plants stating that conditions inside are too dangerous for visitors. Another interesting point about that documentary is that the farmers don't eat their Monsanto corn.
- moothemagiccow, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8why the hell you think it's called fructose?
- spectecjr, on 04/26/2009, -0/+7(For those who care: Specifically, the nasty byproducts of fructose metabolism, are usually inactivated by aldolase. Quercetin slows the breakdown of aldolase, allowing more of it to stick around and nuke those compounds. Any compounds which get through - and it's not a stretch to say that the more fructose you eat, the more byproducts you get, and the less aldolase there is to go around - actually disable macrophages in the liver. Combine the disabled macrophages with viral particles such as the Adenoviruses which are thought to trigger the growth of adipose tissue around the stomach, and hey presto, it's fat cell creation happy fun party time).
- tattertech, on 04/26/2009, -1/+8Americans have an unquenchable desire for sweet stuff? You should meet a Brit.
- OneNaturalOne, on 04/26/2009, -0/+7Exactly.
How about, instead of arguing over whether your Pepsi should have real sugar or high fructose corn syrup, how about don't drink the ***** Pepsi! That ***** is never going to be good for you, no matter what kind of sugar is in it. - dhughes, on 04/26/2009, -0/+7 Too much of anything usually is, but the human brain uses only glucose for energy.
- stoanhart, on 04/25/2009, -6/+12The article says fructose, which makes sense. Glucose is blood sugar - the direct form that your body can take advantage of. Any other type of sugar (fructose, sucrose, etc.) must first be converted to glucose by your body before it can be used.
- j3ff86, on 04/26/2009, -0/+6"Only sugar has more sugar!"
-Frosted Krusty O's - u8myfoood, on 04/26/2009, -1/+7Yay! fellow digger who probably taken biochem!
- Acqua206, on 04/26/2009, -3/+9HFCS is the real goodness? I like the crispness of sugar soda as opposed to the syrup feeling I get on the back of my throat when I drink HFCS coke. The original formula for both Pepsi and Coca Cola utilized sugar. It was only through the sugar lobbying efforts at keeping America's sugar prices artificially high was HFCS introduced. There is a conspiracy theory floating around that the new formula coke that was a flop was a ploy to introduce HFCS into the classic formula when it was reintroduced.
- KloroFormd, on 04/26/2009, -0/+6Jarritos is a Mexican soft drink. It's everywhere here in Texas.
- mexitron5001, on 04/26/2009, -0/+6you're an idiot. basic biochemistry teaches us that we absolutely need glucose to survive. do you think that a piece of fruit is just comprised of special "fruit molecules" that your body breaks down into magic energy dust? that's like saying, i don't eat protein, but I LOVE eating steak!
- AlienMushroom, on 04/26/2009, -2/+7No wonder Americans are fat like meat mountains.
- Amadeus2490, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5Dugg for G-3-P.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -3/+8Hey don't be coming in here with your "science" and "book learning" because I clearly read that cola with REAL SUGAR is SO MUCH BETTER FOR YOU than HFCS.
And by the way the Jews did 9/11 and the moon landings were faked. - rudern, on 04/26/2009, -9/+14this is dumb. High fructose corn syrup only has a slightly higher ratio of fructose : glucose as "real sugar." It's about the same or less % fructose than most fruits you probably eat. The Pepsi made with real sugar is just a marketing scheme to take advantage of the freakout over HFCS. It's just as bad for you. The problem is that everything is sweetened (in part this happened because HFCS was cheaper than cane sugar in huge volumes), not that everything is sweetened with HFCS. In fact, that Pepsi is probably even worse because dumbasses will think it's healthy because it's "all natural" sugar and drink more of it, or ask for more of it in their Fanta.
- pe5t1lence, on 04/26/2009, -0/+4Crazy theories one, regular theories a billion!
- Avaseal, on 04/26/2009, -5/+9especially >these< stupid comments i'm always seeing here on digg.com
- spectecjr, on 04/26/2009, -0/+4Fruits high in fructose are typically high in Quercetin, which negates a lot of the negative side effects of the fructose.
- praisethelard, on 04/26/2009, -1/+5Try some Jarritos. It's made with real sugar.
- dhughes, on 04/26/2009, -0/+4 Carbohydrates are chains of sugars.
- noumuon, on 04/26/2009, -0/+4while we're at it, caffeine is an incredibly poor stimulant in comparison to cocaine. i'm requesting a change back.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -2/+6glucose-fructose _is_ HFCS
