- digitalpencil, on 07/17/2009, -1/+25in a glass.. i like whisky, bourbon etc. but i hate the snobs about as much as i hate wine 'connoisseurs'.
- crashbang, on 07/17/2009, -3/+25Scotch has become the indie rock of liquor. Way too snooty for its own good. Drink it as you enjoy it.
- empath, on 07/17/2009, -0/+22I'll tell you the worst way:
I was once at a club and had had a few red bull & vodka. A friend of mine walked up to me and said, here you want this? And handed me a glass full of whiskey. Not a shot glass, an entire glass full of whiskey, like they put a rum and coke in.
I thought it was a rum and coke (hey it was dark and I was already drunk), and drank the whole glass in one swallow. Then coughed and gagged, and then blacked out about 20 minutes later. I woke up on the bathroom floor of my apartment next to a trash can full of puke at around 2pm the next day and then proceeded to continue puking and then dry heaving for the next six hours or so. I literally thought I was going to die.
So in conclusion, do not drink glasses full of whisky when you are already drunk) - RealmDown, on 07/17/2009, -0/+20You're either my wife or my mother in law in disguise.
- kartman2001, on 07/17/2009, -0/+18Most people agree that Scotch is best Neat. But imho a splash of water mellows the burn and allows you to taste more. That said I don't like it on the rocks because with cold liquids and foods you can not taste as much.

- doctechnical, on 07/17/2009, -0/+10Well to me it raises the immediate question "what kind of whiskey"? If we're talking about a 15 year old single malt Highland Scotch, then you sip slowly, and savor every golden drop. If you just want to get your ethanol on and are swilling "Ol' Crapdrawers" of Last Week vintage, then you chug it down as quickly as possible and pray it stays down.

- scottfarner, on 07/17/2009, -0/+9"It kicks the liver into "oh, he's drunk again and I have to clean up" mode."
Not exactly.
Methanol has a relatively low toxicity. The adverse effects are thought to be from the accumulation of formic acid, a metabolite of methanol metabolism.
Upon ingestion, methanol is quickly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and metabolized in the liver. In the first step of degradation, methanol is transformed to formaldehyde via the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). This reaction is slower than the next step, the transformation of formaldehyde to formic acid via the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase.
Antidote therapy is directed towards delaying methanol metabolism until the methanol is eliminated from the system either naturally or via dialysis. This is often accomplished in 2 ways: ethanol or fomepizole. Ethanol is also metabolized by ADH, and the enzyme has 10-20 times higher affinity for ethanol compared with methanol. Fomepizole is also metabolized by ADH; however, its use is limited because of high costs and lack of availability (Rathi, 2006). - doctechnical, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8I infer you like whiskey enemas. Be careful with that, from what I hear it's easy to OD.
- MWeather, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8Depends on the whiskey/scotch. A Laphroaig Hot Toddy is destroying it. Dewars? Not so much.
- e36wheelman, on 07/17/2009, -1/+8Fast and with reckless abandon.
- Denominator88, on 07/17/2009, -1/+8I like a little bit of club soda in my Glenlivet. A lot of people don't realize "scotch and soda" is scotch and club soda, not scotch and Coke. Putting Coke in Glenlivet is really, really wrong.
- Coven, on 07/17/2009, -2/+9I'm guilty of destroying good scotch and whiskey in hot toddies (hot tea, honey and whiskey/scotch). They're great to relax with at the end of a long day.
I used to drink Jack straight up from my flask but haven't been able to since college. - trendygamer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7I did the opposite this past July 4th. Took a shot of Jack that was larger than I realized and more or less exhaled a full half of it through my nostrils. It was one of the single most painful experiences of my life.
- Coven, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7I believe he meant a Manhattan, which is 2 parts whiskey, 1 sweet vermouth, a dash of Angostura bitters topped off with a cherry.
Those WILL put you on your ass after a couple of them. - doctechnical, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7And the bags are great for keeping your Dungeons and Dragons dice in.

Where is the ***** answer or the actual ARTICLE or video.
Jesus. - ELCad, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6Neat at room temp. Damn I could go for a Johnny Walker Black now.
Scotch/Whisky and iced green tea are very popular in China, which proves that something is very wrong with those people. - naitsirk, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7Single malt whisky is best enjoyed served at room temperature in a tulip shaped glass (like a glencairn glass). A small amount of whater will release more of the flavors, and you should always let your whisky air for some amount time (rule of thumb: air for at least the same number of minutes as the number of years the spirit has been aged)
- NewSc2, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7Cask strength whiskeys are often 100+ proof, and are meant to be diluted. The 80 proof whiskeys you see sold (even the expensive ones -- Macallan 18, Glenmorangie, etc.) are often diluted and colored to a nice looking 80 proof whiskey. So yes, it's common practice to add a bit of water to a 120-proof cask strength whiskey. Only use filtered water, and only add the water once -- usually an ounce will do.
And no to Scotch on the rocks. Cold scotch = tasteless scotch. - MacEnvy, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5Hey, don't be knocking Ol' Crapdrawers. That stuff got me through a lot of cold NY winters.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5I like to splash some on my eyes and let it soak in for a few minutes.

- doctechnical, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5Yeah, one that doesn't come in 3 liter bottles.
- megaton, on 07/17/2009, -2/+7(Your opinion aside...)
Is there some sort of actual conclusion to this, or is it just meant to incite responses?
Did I miss the "Next Page" link? - Zomgondo, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6Hear, hear!!! I'm just happy to meet people who LIKE whiskey, I don't care how they take it. Personally I like it on the rocks, or if it's a hot day out I'll drink it with ice and seltzer. But I'm not going to judge anyone for taking it neat or with a splash of water.
Jack and Coke, on the other hand, is a different story... it's a waste of perfectly good Coke :) - purseonality, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5That sounds like it would curdle into something like 80 proof cottage cheese. Ugh.
- Duffy27, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5with some smoke
- doctechnical, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5And this is why I love digg. Always someone smarter than me :)
Thanks for the info, scottfarner. - PrettyBoyFloyd, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5Scotch whisky should be consumed straight up or on the rocks. Bourbon can also be enjoyed straight up, but can be mixed with spectacular results with other libations (sweet vermouth, as in a Manhattan) or with a coke, or lots of other combinations.
This video specifically focuses on Scotch, hence the dispute. The barman (whose job is mixing liquors) is really bucking the status quo by creating mixed drinks with Scotch. Ask any Scotsman and he'll tell you the only thing you should add to Scotch is ice cubes, and only candy-ass wimps do that. - MWeather, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4I've actually become kind of fond of Bushmills lately. Plan it's so-so, but on the rocks, the vanilla of the oak comes out and it's actually pretty sweet (literally). Te fact that the local liquor store has been selling it for $10 might have something to do with it, though.
- Threlly1, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Single Malt with a splash of spring water.
Perfecto. - nepidae, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4That's not destroying it actually imo, as its more of a remedy.
