- subzero34g, on 05/22/2009, -3/+47Dugg for rhyming title.
- lepetitmousse, on 05/23/2009, -4/+39wouldnt coffee in a can be really hot to hold?
- bubbameister33, on 05/23/2009, -0/+31Anything in a vending machine is awesome.
- EarthernJar, on 05/23/2009, -0/+24It almost is. I lived in Japan for a few years and would often stop on my bike ride home from school at my favorite hot/cold vending machine for "American Coffee" (which always made me laugh because I never saw anything like it in the US). When it would drop out I'd have to juggle it from hand to hand for a few minutes to cool down to the point where I could actually grasp it to open.
- serif69, on 05/23/2009, -0/+16Too hot to handle, too cold to hold.
- LamChops, on 05/23/2009, -0/+14I just got back from Japan last week, there are literally vending machines at every corner.
- gridbread, on 05/23/2009, -0/+13I think I always got some kind of Boss coffee, with Tommy Lee Jones on the vending machine.
- FlyingCaveman, on 05/23/2009, -1/+11yeah they've had hot coffee in a can vending machines for probably 20 years now.
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -0/+10It isn't, but they aren't pipping hot either, the cans are "warmed", nothing else. They do taste good though, for something in a can.
I went there a couple of times on vacation, so I am no expert on Japanese stuff. But their automated beverage machines are fascinating. Heck, when I got *really* lost when walking from the train station to the Great Buddha in Kamakura, I found my way by spotting beverage machines... - Slym, on 05/23/2009, -0/+9Real men drink their coffee from kegs.
- TugOSpiegel, on 05/23/2009, -0/+8Only if its from McDonalds
- mattmollysdad, on 05/23/2009, -1/+8won't work here cause we would trash the machines.
- chrysrobyn, on 05/23/2009, -0/+6You just buy the can without that stuff. When I lived in Japan, I tested the various varieties and I found Boss Black to be the least offensive. Better than instant "coffee", but no substitute for a Folgers drip. If you prefer better than Folgers, then that gives you some clue. There is black, black with sugar, only with cream, cream and sugar, cream and double sugar... Plenty of variety.
- jsmith212600, on 05/24/2009, -0/+6The machine heats it up before vending.
- marx2k, on 05/23/2009, -0/+5Well, you lose if what i want is coffee and not weed.
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -0/+4Was thinking the same thing. Between thieves and vandals a machine on the corner wouldn't last 2 days in most US cities. It's sad when you think about it.
- Jeepy, on 05/23/2009, -4/+8Los Angeles has dank chronic vending machines. I think we win.
http://gizmodo.com/348628/marijuana-vending-machin ... - themastersb, on 05/24/2009, -0/+3I think he's making fun at the fact that this article is pretty much the same as an article like what he said. Imagine a detailed article with videos about Americans eating lunches at their desks or something like "People take of their shoes before going into their houses in Japan". Those and this submission are pretty much along the same line.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 05/23/2009, -4/+7I'm actually drinking coffee from a can, in a van, on my way to Pakistan with my friend Dan Chan.
- StickWST, on 05/23/2009, -0/+2Does Detroit have vending machines that serve canned Karkov?
- mikemehak, on 05/23/2009, -4/+6I'm going to make a Tom Waits reference here, even though most people don't know who he is...
I got the style but not the grace
I got the clothes but not the face
I got the bread but not the butter
I got the wind but not the shutter
But I'm big in Japan - feacesface, on 05/23/2009, -11/+13Ironically, the Japanese are actually not that big in Japan.
- inactive, on 05/23/2009, -2/+4The canned coffee is a great morning drink. The best thing in the summer though is ice cold Kirin from a vending machine.
Oh, and Americans are big in Japan. Literally. - inactive, on 05/23/2009, -0/+2Anything in a can is big in Japan....
- diggyduggle, on 05/23/2009, -0/+2I love those canned Japanese coffee drinks. Boss coffee is crack in a small 8oz can.
- gemlarin, on 05/23/2009, -1/+3Doesn't Starbucks have a doubleshot in a can?
- dampeal, on 05/23/2009, -0/+2I need to move to Japan... all the cool things are they and they get everything first! Seriously though I've always wanted to go to visit and maybe even live there, can't be worse than living in the US...
- jpop, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Not surprising. I believe all the coffee has to be imported there. It's a long trip, and you aren't going to get fresh coffee beans there.
- scyform, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1most of these machines sell out and are restocked each day; the machines along major routes often sell out after the morning rush hour here.
- Shenaniganz08, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Don't know why people are digging you down
I agree ! - chrysrobyn, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1@muzzy
Yes, I just used Folgers drip as a benchmark. If you've ever had canned black coffee, you'd understand there's a reason I'm not using Kona. - hkrob, on 05/24/2009, -1/+2Let's see now...
Real (European) Coffee > Australian Coffee > American Coffee > Coffee in cans > tea
Solved that one for ya. - russelbutt, on 05/23/2009, -2/+3Georgia Cafe Au Lait FTW!
i miss japanese vending machines.. - xcvbn, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1Every Asian market I go to has a variety of "coffee in the can". I keep them in the fridge, never thought about having it hot. Still don't think I will.
- kentifer, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1I bought a can when I went to Japan last year. (Georgia Emerald Blend)
Not bad at all. It was weird how the metal can was luke-warm but the contents were very hot. - babyheadout, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1UCC got things going in 1969. Still best one (IMO, especially after a 20-brand taste test I did a couple weeks ago), and the best value in the West Coast (if you buy 24-can cases from the Nijiya or Mitsuwa Japanese market chains.
- bipolarruledout, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1It's just not the same unless they can figure out a way to make the machine scoff at you for not ordering correctly.
- asgardshill, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1At least that long. There was a canned coffee machine on darned near every street corner when I was there in 1985.
The bourbon vending machines are a trip. And you never see any children around them. - thecoolestguy, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1what about vending machines that don't sell out often? I ask because we have one in our office that's not restocked for weeks at a time, and it has hot coffee.
- marx2k, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1muzzy, I was thinking the same thing.
- Calypsoaf, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Never saw any kids at the porn vending machines either. :)
- JeremyCade, on 05/24/2009, -1/+2Personally I'm not a fan of coffee in Japan full stop.. It's probably the worst coffee I've had, anywhere in the world.. Brewed or from a can. I know a lot of barrister's will back me up on that one.
- scarth, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1ah, i knew there was something appealing about that title, i couldn't put my finger on it
- Raider007, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1I'll agree to how awesome coffee in a can is...
when i was in Japan i got one for breakfast every morning... freaking adicting... best 100 yen ever... - muzzy, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Did you just use Folgers drip as a benchmark?
- skipvt, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1When I saw the title I thought “Why would they need a coffee machine in a restroom?”
- r0mper, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1They sell "Georgia" brand coffee in a tin can, piping hot out of the vending machine.
Try crushing that afterward with your hand, it'll make you feel like a girl. Tin is hard to crush :( - themastersb, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Next I'm expecting to see on Digg's front page "High in fat foods are popular in the U.S." (Sorry it doesn't rhyme)
- muzzy, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1They do that in countries aside from Japan... I know I saw beer in most Russian vending machines.
- FauOz, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Coffee from a machine tastes better than Starbucks in USA. I was very impressed with food and beverage quality everywhere in Tokyo
