I would really like to punch "carrie B" in the ***** mouth - tgjerusalem, on 04/01/2009, -1/+24Once desperate people have food, they'll do a lot to make it last and share it wider.
But to actually go up and accept the charity in the first place is more than a lot of people can bear.
This is the same reason why there are tens of thousands of people in NYC alone who are eminently qualified for food stamp assistance, but who don't apply.
Most either assume that because they're not sleeping on the street they aren't qualified, or they're ashamed and think that accepting help means either they've failed or they're greedy for taking assistance when there are still others who are even more desperate.
But this is *exactly what the program is there for.* Assistance is certainly meant to help those who are so desperate and often mentally ill that they will spend the rest of their lives alternating between shelters and the streets, but there are very few people so bad off.
The vast majority of people this help is intended for are hard working people who have hit a bad spot, or who never had the chance to get their lives together in the first place. Food help (and medical, housing, etc help) can bridge the gap between the money they have and they money they need to survive, and help their family survive. This then can give them the stability to find and keep a job long enough that they get a raise and can make enough to actually live. - inactive, on 04/01/2009, -1/+22I find it interesting that, as much as you hear people complain about our culture of welfare and handouts, this guy's actually having trouble giving away free food.
- ohearn, on 04/01/2009, -0/+13Sawdust won't hurt you. It's basically like eating paper without all the dyes. It's pure fiber though, you don't get any actual nutritional value from it other than filling you up.
- freedomischaos, on 04/02/2009, -1/+10awsome guy; be the change you wish to see.
- divinediva, on 04/01/2009, -1/+10Amazing story. An act of kindness is never wasted. Sadly, it seems like things will deteriorate even further.
- spyd3rweb, on 04/02/2009, -0/+9Ex-grocery guy here, on an average day a grocery store will throw out at least a full 55 gallon drums worth of slightly damaged or old product per day of produce, The bakery and deli will toss around 3 barrels. Not sure about meat dept since we didn't have a full meat counter, but a couple steaks would be a drop in the bucket, or barrel in this case. Product not sold by the 'Sell By' date is still good for quite a while after but is unsaleable and could easily be donated.
- djwesty, on 04/01/2009, -5/+12"The funny thing is, despite New York City’s rising unemployment, he cannot find enough takers."
“They would take the ground beef and mix it with sawdust to feed more people,”
hmmm. - vidaliasweet, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6New Yorkers are AWESOME. The city is full of people with this kind of integrity. I remember on 9-11, not even an hour after the attacks, there were lines of people waiting to give blood. Don't believe the media stereotypes, these are some of the most best people out there.
- AmusedToDeath, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6Better yet just ignore her. The sooner PETA and their whackjob proselytes become even more of a marginalized laughing stock the better,
- tgjerusalem, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6People just mistake the bluntness and speed New Yorkers are accustomed to for rudeness. And when you're living in such a dense city, privacy is something you cultivate on the inside - you have to tune out the masses of people around you or you couldn't function. People from outside the city see this and think it's lack of care, but it's just people filtering information down to manageable levels. Get their attention, and New Yorkers are among the best damn people out there.
- Skafia, on 04/02/2009, -2/+6Macroeconomics teaches us that there is never such a thing as a free dinner.
- cfuse, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3You might as well ask your soybeans while you're at it.
- cfuse, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3No, I believe he's trying to point out that carrie B is crying about chemicals and hormones (and gasp, cloning) in meat when she probably puts far more toxic chemicals on her scalp every time she washes her hair.
You can always rely on an overly emotional person to throw common sense straight out the window. Fruit and vegetables are saturated in pesticides (and even growth regulating hormones, GM and cloning is common, etc.) but you don't see her putting down her tofu burger. She's just making a religious argument, and just like every other religion it's got nothing to do with logic or reality and everything to do with her convictions (no matter how divorced from reality they may be). - mythril, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3I would say that is because when you accept charity from a single person you tend to feel as though you have slighted them in some way, or at very least ashamed that you are burdening another individual human being with your needs. When the government is giving it away suddenly people tend to feel entitled, because the government is a lumbering hulk, and they get all that money (from taxpayers) anyway.
- pen25, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3whats this? not one obama caused this mess msg or these homeless need to find a job. nice digg.
- TheCure, on 04/02/2009, -1/+4Also you misread the article. "They" refers to the camp community, not the meat market.
- sageerrant, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Clearly, people miss the taste of sawdust.
- Logrusmage, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Er... you really don't get the concept of CHARITY...
- shadebane, on 04/02/2009, -1/+3haha, yes dont we all wish!
- crossmr, on 04/02/2009, -1/+3you need an education more than you need a steak dinner.
I'll let you puzzle that for a bit.. - mrteleprompter, on 04/02/2009, -3/+5See PETA, I told you meat is awesome!
- marx2k, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2*light bulb* New Malibu Diet Idea!
- mouthbreether, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2He probably qualifies for a nice sized tax deduction if he really needs it.
- Schda, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1If you are wondering why you are getting dugg down it's because you didn't read the article. It's not just him giving it away, there are around seven companies listed donating food. Also it's not every day, only on Wednesdays.
"Now Mr. Ruhalter has put together dinners on Wednesday night at two restaurants: Essex Restaurant (menu) and Thor Restaurant in the Rivington Hotel. The dinners will include donations from Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery, Roni-Sue’s Chocolates, Saxelby Cheesemongers, Papa Pasquale Ravioli, Economy Candy and Viva Produce." - AmusedToDeath, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1Why do people leave the same comment on digg that they do on the sourced article?
- Schda, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1It was also added during the Depression, today they give away the steak dinner.
- mcquitty, on 04/02/2009, -1/+2This is the way charity works. See, people freely giving of themselves and their resources.
Government is not charity. Government takes what it wants, and if you don't give it they throw you in jail. That's not charity. That's extortion.
Of course, it is Patriotic to pay taxes from the same man who was so miserly he gave $3000 to charity out of $2.5 million over 10 years.
I would rather have a cheerful giver. - susn, on 04/05/2009, -0/+1It's not wishing buddy, it's a real day.
- GamerXR72, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1I can't go more than a week without a serving of sawdust!
- marx2k, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1"nowadays the meat is pumped full of chemicals and hormones"
Are you saying that's NOT the case? - marx2k, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1cfuse, I agree. PETA has aggressively become ridiculous and thus ineffectual.
- susn, on 04/02/2009, -5/+6There is on Steak and Blow Job Day
- tgjerusalem, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1God damn.
Reminds me of a friend of mine's boyfriend, who recently tried to talk her out of applying for food stamps because "we're trying to eat organic."
This was a rich boy whose parents were supporting him, criticizing a girl who was emancipated at 16, recently lost her job, and has *nothing.*
Is eating chemical free organic food good? Yea, sure! Know what's better? *Eating a full meal you can actually afford.* - dvwdd, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1Thank goodness for people like him, that is all I can say..
- FUR10N, on 04/02/2009, -1/+1Luke owes me so many free steak dinners.
- Rudegar, on 04/02/2009, -2/+2hhhmmm maybe a spontaneous nude Friday would tricker a series of events which would result in me qualifying for a free steak :)
- shadebane, on 04/02/2009, -2/+2agreed
- Smelltastic, on 04/02/2009, -1/+1If only high-class prostitutes would take the example from this act of charity and offer the occasional free blow job to the poor.
- planes, on 04/02/2009, -2/+2The free hamburger to the camps worked, because everyone at the camp was in the same situation. But, to go to a fancy restaurant where you've been told you have to prove your situation ( they don't know he won't ask ) and then sit around looking at other people, who are looking at you, and eveyone is trying to figure out if they are better or worse off than others in the room, I can see where people wouldn't go. Donating those steaks, chops, and burger that are starting to get a little age ( that's when they're good!) to the local church food shelf might go over a lot better, and the people can eat at home.
- m00n1, on 04/03/2009, -1/+1I tried to, but your mom wasn't home.
- nryan1969, on 04/21/2009, -0/+0What a good idea, especially now when everyone seems to be having trouble with money.
- bllambert, on 04/02/2009, -3/+1There is no such thing as a free steak dinner. Just ask the cow.
- shadebane, on 04/02/2009, -3/+1Yes but its total *****. Do the math, not buisness could handle giving away so much on a daily basis, even if it was their rotten leftovers.
- SJZero, on 04/02/2009, -5/+2Wow, this is a horrible story.
Women walk into this bar hoping for a little action and this guy CHOPS THEM UP AND FEEDS THEM TO THE HOMELESS?!
(Wait, that's not the meat market being referred to, is it?) - shadebane, on 04/02/2009, -10/+1apparently a nice person, but regrettably a terrible business decision. Being a manager of a meat department in a major grocery, even giving away a cut of chuck steak would add up to a business closing loss, meat regardless of the cut is expensive! Around 1.59lb cost on a chuck cut. I call shenanigans. If this is a nobility issue, its pure stupidity for a publicity stunt. No free food goes unclaimed, perhaps you just cant cook!
