- kplo, on 04/01/2009, -4/+249My bad. Typo in title. "The Restaurant Where You Pay What You Want (or Can)"
Although it is a pretty freewheelin' place, so maybe you can pay wherever you want as well. - ianryerson, on 02/26/2009, -5/+121That is a great concept. The honor system can be an amazing power.
- granolajoe, on 02/26/2009, -0/+109My wife and I have eaten there twice and it's pretty good. You can't expect anything special, but you mostly go to support what they're doing. We've paid around $30 before. And they've been around for almost two years (I believe), so they seem to be doing well.
- Brizzyce, on 02/27/2009, -2/+73Dugg for a pretty decent recovery.
- GordonClass, on 02/27/2009, -1/+52Maybe the music industry should try this.
- iagainsti, on 02/27/2009, -0/+45Personally, I feel when I'm presented with an opportunity like this I always pay more then I usually would. I think It's an awesome business model that should be emulated by others.
- FyreGoddess, on 02/26/2009, -1/+43All your questions are addressed in the article.
- piper999, on 02/26/2009, -1/+40This reminds me of the curry cafes in Manchester UK I used to go to in the early 90's. They were originally set up for the South Asian factory workers but the food was so cheap it was almost free and so good office workers like me used to go to them for lunch.
I live near Denver so I think I might have to go up there and try this place out. - Sublimin4L, on 02/27/2009, -0/+35@quaxon: FTA: 'Even though he [homeless man] hangs out in this neighborhood, for a long time he thought SAME was a normal restaurant, so he stayed away. But then someone told him he could come here to eat even if he didn't have money. "It's pretty good here," he says. "I got a slice of pizza, the one with the tomatoes on it."
"That's all you got?" I ask.
"I only had 35 cents," he replies.
But there's no set price, I point out. "You could've gotten as much as you wanted."
"I don't know." He shrugs. "I only had 35 cents." '
Sometimes the poorest people are the most well off/happiest because they've got their VALUES if nothing else. - Kizzlar, on 02/27/2009, -10/+41The Radiohead of Restaurants
- TheBadWolf, on 02/27/2009, -3/+34Sounds a lot like "One World Cafe" in Salt Lake City. Same concept, and I think they've been going for about four years or so. Good stuff.
www.oneworldeverybodyeats.com
In fact, their website lists SAME and other spinoffs. - visionsofhoff, on 02/27/2009, -4/+34I was gonna bury, but the use of the term freewheelin' turned it into a digg.
- twiztidsinz, on 02/27/2009, -1/+31Hopefully your desire to be a good and honest person.
- ayeroxor, on 02/27/2009, -1/+29What kind of people would we be if we fed THEM?
- centran, on 02/27/2009, -2/+29I think the saddest thing about the story was the homeless people who only ate a small portion emptied out their pockets but the people who ate a salad and several slices of pizza just put in $5. wtf?
I think that a lot of the people underpaying just don't know what to pay or they pay what they think it would cost them to make it(not restaurant prices). It would probably be a good idea to have a suggested donation amount that is similar to what other restaurants would charge.... or give a range and state it something like "out of 15 local restaurants surveyed the price for a similar meal ranged from $4-$7" - perryc, on 02/26/2009, -13/+39Good idea, yes, but how would you stop people from coming and not paying in the long run, without affecting your budget? Maybe 5-10% will overpay - the rest will underpay. I wish them luck anyway.
- bobboberton, on 02/27/2009, -0/+26The second page of the article mentions One World Everybody Eats Cafe too.
- compgeek, on 02/27/2009, -3/+27this seems like an awesome idea. means that nobody goes hungry I can see something like that taking off if someone is broke for a couple days for whatever reason and just needs a quick meal they could go in eat and then they just volunteer in the kitchen for an hour afterwards or a couple if they can. Sounds like a fair exchange. Pay when you are able or in exchange for your meal help serve others. Seems very christ like to me. I wouldn't mind trying this place if I'm ever in the area
- bobboberton, on 02/27/2009, -0/+21You sure just had a mental link with TheBadWolf there.
- sbernhardt, on 02/27/2009, -2/+23I'll bet it works out. There is a cafe here in Salt Lake City called the One World Cafe, which operates on the same business model. People were sure it would fail, but its survived for years now and appears to be prospering.
- theamazingkort, on 02/27/2009, -2/+23Calm down there, Potsie. It's just a website.
- grantmoore3d, on 02/27/2009, -0/+21Show me potato-salad!
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -1/+18I know you were going for a south park joke but you didn't do justice to the original material. Bury and better luck next time.
- Dinsdale77, on 02/27/2009, -1/+18It worked with Radiohead, the average donation for their free online album was around 10 dollars.
- hawarkarem, on 02/27/2009, -0/+16It really makes me angry knowing people put napkins in the envelope to make it seem like they paid. Cowards.

About Us
The Birkys developed this idea through volunteer work over many years. The two were so touched during this service they decided to do something WONDERFULLY DIFFERENT. Over the course of their years working at food banks and shelters they saw the growing number of people needing assistance: hardworking single moms, the elderly who cannot retire, the educated and the uneducated. Some even work 40 hours a week on minimum wage and cannot make ends meet. It is the Birkys' sincere hope that through SAME Café they can make a difference to all who walk through the door, whether it is a person seeking help or a person seeking to help.

If i lived in Denver i would pay and volunteer in the kitchen - OMGRussellCrowe, on 02/27/2009, -0/+15Man, skipping out on the payment for a $2 meal is sure gonna show them!
- supported, on 02/27/2009, -0/+15lol. i just ate there yesterday, that was fast :P
- secrity, on 02/27/2009, -0/+15Did you read the article? The article explained how they dealt with homeless people.
- aladrin, on 02/27/2009, -3/+17Illegals? I'd worry more about the shiftless *****.
- sbernhardt, on 02/27/2009, -0/+14BADWOLF!!! Beat me by seconds.
- cyrix, on 02/27/2009, -0/+14Wow... Knowing he didn't just load up for 35 cents makes me happy because he could have abused it but chose not to, yet at the same time it's just saddening to know that's all he had.
- dkmccue, on 02/27/2009, -2/+16If this were in NYC, it would be destroyed by the other restaurateurs. They'd be losing their customers and their $45 per lunch profits.
- TruthKid, on 02/27/2009, -1/+14It's a restaurant, not family fued
- eddy23170, on 02/27/2009, -1/+14easy there Shooter
- GlobalGizmo, on 02/26/2009, -1/+14It will definitely be interesting to see how this turns out in the long run. I love the creativity in creating a restaurant like this given today's current economic situation.

- maveric101, on 02/27/2009, -1/+12that kinda goes against the business model though. its not an easy problem to solve.
- JoeDiggsIt, on 02/27/2009, -1/+11It's okay, Skippy.
- BillE3, on 02/27/2009, -0/+10Not unlike the "honor" system of many small time farmers (truck gardens) selling directly to the public. Put out the fresh harvest of the day and have a box to put the money in.
Most people will feel generous and leave more than and posted value.
Funny how good people act and how generous they are when there is no one telling them to give or forcing them to. They become more generous and happy to do it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Americans. - rupertd, on 02/27/2009, -1/+10We have hundreds of these in Australia, good places to get decent vegetarian food
- MetalGear7, on 02/27/2009, -5/+14if this was in nyc it would be a pigstock, bums central
