- blitzwing85, on 11/16/2009, -0/+33It's comforting to know that there are S.O.Bs far cheaper than me.
- mabba18, on 11/16/2009, -1/+26Want to eat cheap all the time, then there is only one tip you really need to know:
Don't eat any any restaurants, ever.
Nothing you can buy will be cheaper then making it yourself. - StarWarsFever, on 11/16/2009, -0/+24"Practice moderation: giving blood can be a good way to get a free cookie and feel good about yourself. Selling plasma, can be a good way to do both of the above, and make a few extra BOOKS. Most nurses are nice, and will give you an extra cookie if you are polite."
OMG BOOKS? I'M TOTALLY IN - bababooey141, on 11/16/2009, -0/+24More articles on cheap eats plz!
- BoneStamp, on 11/16/2009, -0/+24No one ever pays me in books. :(
- BoneStamp, on 11/16/2009, -0/+15Since the article advocated ordering off the kids menu at fast food restaurants, I'm pretty sure they're not trying to convert you to a health nut.
- Wakkyweed, on 11/16/2009, -0/+15#1 - Get a large jar of government issued peanut butter from a food bank.
#2 - Have your girlfriend bring home leftover pan pizza crusts from her job at Pizza Hut.
#3 - Put peanut butter on the pizza crusts and eat it.
That's how I survived for a two week period in college, eating peanut butter and pizza crust three meals a day. I was pretty damn skinny in those days. - DreadBlog, on 11/16/2009, -2/+16Learn to actually cook meals from scratch instead of looking for preprocessed garbage?
- LetsGoToClass, on 11/16/2009, -0/+12I don't think he's advocating any healthy eats with all those thumbnails of burger king kids' meals and tables covered in pies and cakes. Then again, this is very healthy food compared to my regular diet of cat lard and milksteak.
- Laminarcissus, on 11/16/2009, -4/+16I'm all for cheap, but eating food out of the trash is horrifying.
- brazilianwinter, on 11/16/2009, -1/+12I think at some point in college I went to a free food event every night for good two weeks. Food wasn't that good, but you can't beat free meal if you're broke.
- KingGorilla, on 11/16/2009, -0/+11Dumpster diving works too. A surprising amount of food is thrown out that is perfectly good to eat. Check to see if its legal first.
- frequentFlyer, on 11/16/2009, -1/+11was going by his nick.
- asnider, on 11/16/2009, -0/+9Rebel fighters don't typically have a lot of money, so they need tips on eating for cheap.
- matthewf01, on 11/16/2009, -0/+9Hitting a Costco early on Saturday or Sunday for all of the free samples (many times SUBSTANTIAL stuff, like half a burger, pieces of fish, sausage, or chicken, potstickers, pasta salad, one time the pizza station [ever had their pizza? really awesome] was giving away slices (with an 's' - I had a few...). Excellent resource for free* eats.
* - you're basically paying for it in your membership, so get your money's worth. - asnider, on 11/16/2009, -0/+8Wouldn't "real" rice cost less than instant rice? It's healthier and tastes better, so unless it's more expensive, I think "suffering" through the longer cooking time is worth it.
- bbqribs, on 11/16/2009, -1/+9And really, you're spending too much for the 'antibiotic free' chicken. There's generally a premium on stuff that's "free range" and/or "organic" and most of the time, there's little difference between the products anyway.
- mac888, on 11/16/2009, -1/+9Big steaming piles of cheap eats... show me the way.
- jgopp, on 11/16/2009, -0/+7Pro-tip: pizza places that have "hot and ready" pizzas usually throw a few pies out at the end of the night, show up at closing time before they throw it out and they will usually give you the pizza for free.
- jud420, on 11/16/2009, -0/+7Rice and beans doesn't have to be bland. Add some spices, chorizo, a bay leaf, and some oil and red wine vinegar to some black beans while cooking them, and top with some raw white onion and chopped tomatoes or whatever else you have. TONS of flavor and still and extremely cheap meal.
- burningrobot, on 11/16/2009, -1/+8Box of Instant Rice: $~2
Whole Onion: $1
Pack of Mushrooms: $1
Package of antibiotic free Chicken: $6
You can serve 4 people one meal with this, and you'll have that box of rice forever. Also you can substitute or add vegetables/other dishes as you please. Simple meals like this are what's getting me through college. It's healthy, affordable, and delicious. - skellener, on 11/16/2009, -1/+7Stop eating fast food.
- Propethic, on 11/16/2009, -0/+6Good, I hope they join so they can also pay to have friends
- Laminarcissus, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5Great, can I get your girlfriend's number?
- soil, on 11/17/2009, -0/+5Not sure that giving blood to get a cookie = net gain.
- DittoMuch, on 11/16/2009, -0/+51) Use your freezer - lets you buy on special and eat when ever also provides a stock pile to prevent 'I'm ordering in because there is nothing in the house'.
2) Build a pantry - Same as above but for dry goods, it lets you have a stockpile created at cheapo prices.
3) Cook it yourself - if its cheaper to make it yourself than to buy it the obvious choice is to make it yourself
4) Shop in a group - 4 people can divide up a large bulk purchase and all parties get a discount.
5) Cheap food - every grocery store has a section of cheap meats and veggies that nobody under the age of 70 who speak english know how to use. Learn how to use them to make something you enoy - uncleosbert, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5yeah, but no one wants to live on slightly used pizza crusts and government peanut butter unless they're stoned. it's suicide prevention.
- ParticleMan420, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5more healthy or less ***** for you?
to-may-to/to-mah-to i suppose ;)
*****, now i want a whopper jr - XTomTomX, on 11/16/2009, -1/+5I order the kids meal all the time.
Never been denied.
Cheaper, and
Usually more healthier too. - sb66, on 11/16/2009, -1/+51. Food is cheap
2. If you're so hard up, buy everything at the grocery store and drink tap water.
3. Hitting the grocery store 30 min before closing should get you some 1/2 off perishables - ChromaVita, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4Bagel places, or places like Panera Bread are usually awesome places to hit just after they close.
- ParticleMan420, on 11/16/2009, -1/+5then its not the "big city" then is it.
here where i live i cant think of a grocery store that closes. - agrabes, on 11/16/2009, -3/+7Some of us realize that it's pretty likely to be a placebo effect. Also, if you're really trying to go for a cheap meal, you don't need to pay a premium for chicken. Get regular chicken, I haven't died from it yet and I sincerely doubt that my tastebuds are fried.
- jud420, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4Then you're doing it wrong.
- ParticleMan420, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3grocery stores dont close in the big city.
- uncleosbert, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3i used to work for a caterer and they really do give out a lot of free food to employees. also, if you are in foodservice, it's fun to try trades. i used to deliver pizza, and we would barter the pizza for ice cream, chinese food... you get sick of the free pizza after a while.
also check your local university's art department. students will throw their own shows and gallery openings, especially approaching the end of the semester, and there are often appetizers around. they'll be grateful you're being a warm body for the pictures. empty galleries are no good. - ParticleMan420, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3well there you go then, its canada. i can only speak for the 5th largest city in america
- edwartica, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Go to a supermarket's Deli right before they start closing up everything for the night. A lot of times the prepared hot foods will be at half price.
- KingGorilla, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3It's not the scraps from your neighbors bin. We're talking about bags and bags full of untouched day old baked goods, slightly dented canned food(not the kind that causes botulism) and not pretty fruit(bananas with brown peels). You won't believe how much stores waste
- tremor_tj, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3Buy a cheap rice cooker. It makes rice soooo much easier to enjoy.
- williemain, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Thanks for the list. Its a lot easier than robbing people of their food and valuables at gun point like I have been doing!
- asnider, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3That doesn't answer my question. When I say "major city" I mean one of the largest cities in the country. But, hey, it's Canada so I guess we're just small towns in comparison to large American and European cities.
- Laminarcissus, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Did you click on the right article?
- Wakkyweed, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2My ex-wife now, actually, and I don't have the slightest idea where she is. I haven't heard from her in more than 12 years. If you can find her you are welcome to the psycho bitch.
- stonebear, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2You need to realize that when the media says a multimillionaire is broke, what they generally mean is they are not nearly as rich as they used to be. They have money problems; but they are still comparatively rich, and continue to live that kind of lifestyle to some extent. Michael Jackson is another good example. Shoot; I remember when Donald Trump was "broke." Ha!
- ihavefrowned, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2What do you mean "you people"?
- starf, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Apparently in California you can go in to buy just alcohol. It's a state law. You may have to wait for the manager to come by though, as the people up front probably aren't aware.
- ParticleMan420, on 11/16/2009, -1/+3and he still died.
- LordStryker, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2beans... eat lots of beans... and perhaps rice... cheap cheap cheap if you can stand eating bland food
- asnider, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Wild rice is usually expensive, in my experience. But brown rice is usually pretty damn cheap. I normally pay $2-3 for a bag that lasts me for 2-3 weeks (and I eat at least one meal that includes rice almost every single day). $1 a week is a pretty hard to deal to beat.
