- RothenbergXXX, on 04/03/2009, -1/+38Arguments against canned beer:
- The inner plastic coating is too porous to prevent the beer from coming in contact with metal for longer than a few weeks. Any aromatic and pleasantly bitter hop resins that come into contact with aluminum are converted to disgusting, skunky compounds.
- Cans are poor insulators, and unstable temperatures cause a beer's malt character to lose complexity as the various carbohydrates and glutens break down into simpler compounds.
- You cannot bottle-condition beer (the secondary fermentation which naturally produces carbonation) in a can, it would explode. Any carbonation present in canned beer has been artificially injected rather than being smoothly released into the beer via fermentation, robbing it of its duration and the preferred texture. Not to mention missing the other complex dimension (besides malt and hop character) that live yeast adds to beer. - bixby1, on 04/03/2009, -2/+37I can't smash a bottle against my forehead and impress my friends. I mean I could, and they would be impressed, but at what cost?

- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -2/+35Drinking beer from a can is the best as long as you pour it into a red cup first. The red cup takes away any chance of drinking any cancer causing agents like I read in my e-mail that was sent to all my friends. That reminds me. I need to forward to at least 12 of my friends that e-mail so I can get 12 years of good luck. That is the Max you know. Pay attention and don't let others fool you.
- InfinitySnatch, on 04/03/2009, -0/+30True or not in regard to beer, bottled Coca-Cola will always be better than its canned counterpart. This is a completely objective and universal truth.
- solmakou, on 04/03/2009, -9/+38Every canned beer I have ever had has had that metallic taste to it, by having them tell me it's sprayed and it shouldn't taste like metal doesn't make it so. Also, the only reason that your beer would be exposed to the sun is if you are about to drink it.
- ThePowerDigger, on 04/03/2009, -0/+19Judge: Not only has she aged, but she has a beer belly too!
Phil: That's my wife, and she's pregnant.
Judge: Then she should lay off the beer! - tmappin, on 04/03/2009, -3/+20I've never encountered a metallic taste in any canned beer I have enjoyed. I have, however, had beer skunked by light in a glass bottle. While I'll always prefer cask beer or kegged draft cans do seem a decent second option over glass bottles.
- nepidae, on 04/03/2009, -0/+16I think infinity was talking about glass bottles. If not, glass bottles were so kickass for coke. Maybe its nostalgia but I remember it tasting better.
for coke:
glass bottle > can > plastic bottled - Cruelapollo, on 04/03/2009, -0/+15You also have to consider that only the inside of the can is sprayed. If you're drinking directly from the can, the metallic taste is from you putting your lips on metal.
- braddaniels, on 04/03/2009, -0/+12Can we have canned vodka for quick, on-the-go inebriation?
- Gizza, on 04/03/2009, -1/+12Some people actually enjoy the taste of beer and don't just drink it to get wasted. Stuff like this makes a difference.
And when you've had bottle conditioned beer, it's hard to go back. - sdcarter, on 04/03/2009, -0/+9I was gonna bury you; but I'll enlighten you instead. The short version is, "You're drinking the wrong beer."
The long version is that you need to mix it up with porters, IPA's, heffeweissens, lambics, pilsners, barleywines, etc. Try diffrent ales and lagers. Venture farther into heavy beers and light beers. Explore imports and microbrews... or other products from major breweries. Some even taste better warm instead of cold and crisp.
Beer is very similar to wine. There's a good beer for every meal, occasion, season, and palate. The trick is finding what you like, what you don't, and what you'll learn to like after developing your palate further. - onionoino, on 04/03/2009, -0/+9i guess that is why you are not simpsonsfanboy
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+8So you must be either in highschool or early on in the college game. Nothing wrong with liquor, but learn to like beer or you will forever be known as a nancy queer.
- MasterGrief, on 04/03/2009, -1/+7I've seen cans of wine before....
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -2/+8Drink Whisky. Eliminates any argument one way or another. Works better too.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6 - You can't smash it and cut your friend's throat in a bloody alcohol-fueled rage.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Slapping the bottom out of a beer bottle is more impressive than crushing a can on your forehead. Fill the bottle almost to the top with water then hit it really, really hard (else it won't break, but your hand might): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APU3SJ0PzLc&fea ...
- makkaveli19, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5*"To alcohol, the cause and solution to all of life's problems." < corrected.
- bcronos, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Coke from an icy cold glass bottle is the very best!
- monkeysama, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Budweiser was engineered for taste?
- Gizza, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5"and through years of exposure to social prejudice you believe it’s of a lesser quality than its bottled counterpart. "
Ah, no. Through years of exposure to drinking beer I know it's of a lesser quality than its bottled counterpart.
Of course it could also be that here in Australia only the cheap nasty bogan beers come in cans. Any beer worth a damn comes in stubbies. - MasterGrief, on 04/03/2009, -3/+7I... actually prefer canned coke to plastic bottled.
:( - Inaktivist, on 04/03/2009, -2/+6I've seen unicorns raping faeries...
- makkaveli19, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Stella in a can tastes like piss.
- Inaktivist, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4What you're talking about already exists and it's called a "flask."
- Gizza, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4That's probably because you're drinking it "icy". An icy beer has no taste. If you really had the "beer gene" you would know that.
- sdcarter, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Be honest, you also can't properly crush a beer can by slamming it against your forehead.
- bills534, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Budweiser and Miller are not the only beers available in America. There are thousands of smaller breweries that put out decent products. http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/TopAmerican.asp
- raptor87, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4unless your drinking cask beer, your beer from a tap comes from a giant can.
- KarateMedia, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Oskar Blues, mentioned in the article, is a microbrewery that only uses cans - http://www.oskarblues.com/brew/
I've only had their Imperial Stout, Ten Fidy -- horrible name, but it's a delicious beer. Yes, it's like used motor oil and might take you an hour to drink a whole can, but it's quite a beer. Not an Imperial Stout I get regularly, but I really do like the powerful taste.
Also, I have a friend that works for Heineken and he swears that cans are better for beer than bottles. - drex8, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3One of these days,
One of these days...
POW! RIGHT IN THE KISSER! - pilzburybizkit, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3The term "skunking" isn't misleading because light actually turns the hop chemicals into the exact same chemical that makes skunk spray smell bad.
- maz2331, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3I'll drink to that.
- celotil, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Samuel Adams ain't bad.
Sorry, that's the extent of my American Beer experience. - danwallace, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue..... clouds of white
Bright blessed days....dark sacred nights
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.
The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are also on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin.. how do you do

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
Theyll learn much more.....than Ill never know
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world

Yes I think to myself .......what a wonderful world. - nicc, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3for those Pronoiac you down, I think he means Guiness is better in a can compared to a bottle, which it is!
- jamesdew, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4maybe you are imagining the metallic taste, maybe not. As the article says, just buy the same brand of beer from a bottle and a can then see if you can tell the difference.
- xxmjumpman23xx, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3It's an acquired taste. Used to not like it that much, now I love it.
- makemylink, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3drink beer and have fun that's all i can say
- smurfsahoy, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2Hefeweizen by the way also typically has fewer calories than even light beers of watery American stock, isn't hoppy, and typically tastes like banana. So you can look manly and still be a fancy bottom if you like.
- desistere, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2Frankly, I don't find that bottle conditioning makes much of a difference. Both processes produce carbon dioxide. One is more natural and traditional and the other is more productive for large production.
The only benefit I see with bottle conditioning is the inclusion of the sediment which is rich in the vitamin B complex. Many people do not drink the yeast sediment however.
On the other hand, bottle conditioning may make a beer very cloudy which is highly undesirable in many styles of beer. - smurfsahoy, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2I think Budweiser was engineered to successfully circumvent the gag reflex.
- youannoyme, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2I used to be exactly the same way; I couldn't stand the stuff. Then I sat down once and actually let myself taste some good beer. I just love me a good brew now. Though I still can't stand the fizzy yellow stuff...
http://www.stonebrew.com/newsletter/archives/02071 ... - InfinitySnatch, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Like yo moma!
- WhiteCloud, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2It's still not meant to be icy. It should be cool but nor ice cold. You are missing out on a lot of flavor and goodness if you are drinking IPAs that are ice cold.
- macromorgan, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2You're missing out on Gordon's IPA (very good) and Dale's Pale Ale (also very good). Old Chub is good if you like Scottish Ales, which I do not.
I don't remember much about the night I tried Ten Fidy, which probably means it's a good beer too! - randall814, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2I don't know why you're getting dugg down, you're absolutely right.
