- pyromanx, on 02/18/2008, -3/+22Annual costs of my alcohol consumption

• $2000: various kegs of beer.
• $1200: various bottles of liquor.
Donations
• $5.05: Obama for president - inghamb87, on 02/18/2008, -1/+18I always knew that getting drunk would solve global warming!
- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/18/2008, -1/+16Title is very misleading. Just because bottles are made with less glass doesn't mean that drinking more beer with save the environment. Drinking from a keg instead of bottles would be better because kegs are refillable.
- tpizz, on 02/18/2008, -1/+11I'm very green when I drink. I constantly water trees and shrubs.
- farewell2RMS, on 02/18/2008, -0/+10Imagine how much less it's going to hurt when you smash one on your head......probably about 30%...
- shrednwail, on 02/18/2008, -0/+9I brew my own beer and re-use the bottles.
- VaporBro, on 02/18/2008, -0/+9Three of my favorite beers come from the Chimay Brewery in Belgium. I can always drink their beer and feel like I am helping the world. Such damn good beer too...I highly recommend it to anyone who loves life.
From Wikipedia:
"As with all other Trappist breweries, the beer is sold only for financial support of the monastery and good causes. The brewery business pays rent for use of the property within the abbey, which is used to support the monastic community. All of the profit from the sale of the beer is distributed to charities and for community development around the region."

- Pimpalicious316, on 02/18/2008, -3/+11man, you folks sure will find a way to shoehorn those stats into any topic, won't you?
- airburst, on 02/18/2008, -0/+8Quick guide to selling ANY product in the 21st century:
1. Get product.
2. Proclaim how green product is.
3. Profit.
I'm a %100 for less pollution, but many companies seem a little disingenuous when they are proclaiming their product green or as way to save the planet. - sockpuppets, on 02/18/2008, -0/+8...and getting better looking by the bottle.
- piesforyou, on 02/18/2008, -0/+7“If only drinking was a more environmentally friendly hobby.”
No... I've never, ever thought that. - SPLASTiK, on 02/18/2008, -0/+7It'd be better if everyone canned their booze.
1. Provides more protection from sunlight/uv which can cause negative reactions
2. Lighter than glass means less in transport costs/gas
3. Offers better seal than glass, so more protected from oxidation meaning it lasts longer
4. Pretty much everywhere recycles cans, glass not everywhere
5. Modern can technology has gotten rid of the "tinny" taste with special inner linings
6. Cans can go places glass isn't allowed like sporting events and the beach
Many microbreweries are starting to can their beer because it's just superior packaging that no longer affects flavor and is less expensive than glass. - shellnet, on 02/18/2008, -1/+7Canned beer tastes like canned beer. :(
- ChzPlz, on 02/18/2008, -0/+6From an environmental perspective, refilling a glass bottle is better than recycling - but you need a program that supports it.
- satanguy, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5*sings* More beeer More beeer More beeer More beer
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5i don't have anywhere to fit a keg in my apartment.
- elliotys, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5Good Idea. I worry about the beer becoming light-struck/skunky though, we already have enough corona and heineken.
- sockpuppets, on 02/18/2008, -1/+6Beer makes me exude more methane than a dozen cows eating taco bell.
- lordchronos, on 02/18/2008, -2/+6quit spamming this crap all over digg
- lebruf, on 02/18/2008, -0/+4No, I'm guessing your Boss is probably drinking as well to cope with the fact that he's working on President's Day too.

Good Idea. I worry about the beer becoming light-struck/skunky though, we already have enough corona and heineken. - tpizz, on 02/18/2008, -2/+52 beer queer!
- erickssm, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3just drink drought beer....
- mishaco, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3but this green product has BEER in it . and its not even st. patricks day !
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3How are you going to defend yourself in a bar fight with a broken can?
- pyromanx, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3I used to spend too much on bottles of beer, so I built a kegerator. Now I just drink more and don't save much money.
- strictnein, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3One question on glass: doesn't it cost more energy to recycle a glass bottle than to create one from scratch?
- ChzPlz, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Ontario (Canada) does a great job of reusing beer bottles. Because of the 10 cent deposit on each bottle, 97% of all beer bottles are returned. They get refilled 15-18 times, until they are recycled.
If there's one thing we know up here, it's beer. Now if only it was cheaper... we pay ~$36.75 for 24 bottles of mainstream beer... - cobainirvana, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2*sighs* how true
- neognostic, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3I am a biological wonder, I turn expensive beer into piss, which waters and fertilizes my lawn in one splash.
- tjdubya, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2This is typical green-marketing crap. If you wanted a more environmentally sound answer than "thinner bottles" how about using returnable bottles.
Oh that's right, hardly anyone uses them anymore. Where I live, 10 years ago I had the selection of about 15 beers that came in returnable bottles (even the box is re-used). Last year there were 4, now there is only one (Point Special from Steven's Point, WI). I assume they will stop soon as well.
Going green is just added marketing buzz to make the consumer feel warm and fuzzy about buying. If people actually gave a ***** they would actually re-use instead of using a tiny bit less than extravagantly. - SemiSarcastic, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3You think someone might start a war over those figures?
- aoru, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Plus, I return most of it back to earth when I take a massive piss in your yard.
- nbcaffeine, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2too bad beer will never be urine neutral
- verkon, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Huh? Green beer? It isn't Saint Patrick's day already!
- JacksonYaya, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Kegs are always accompanied by a stack of plastic cups.
- chatche, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2If you wanna buy from breweries who make efforts towards conservation and sustainability than you should drink Sierra Nevada beer. They produce about a megawatt from fuel cells powered by waste produced from the brewing process. This combined with solar panels accounts for about 70% of the energy they consume.
http://www.sierranevada.com/environment.html - mal1964, on 02/18/2008, -0/+230% less filling than their regular bottles, but it still has that great full bottle taste?
- CoronaVegas, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Kegerator- less trips to the liquor store and less bottles/ cans.
(I already use an extra fridge for my beer, so yes, I am saving energy.) - nbcaffeine, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but if I didn't go so often, how would the creepy guy at the beer store know I'm a drunk? Then the only person who would know is my wife. And the neighbors lawn.
- pyromanx, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Damn, you're right. I messed that up. The post that is, the donation was correct. How did he do that day? Anything significant?
- akatherder, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1By my calculations, it appears he found some place featuring 25 cent per bottle specials.
- courtjester555, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I thought it was supposed to be $5.01, because Lincoln is on both the 5 and the penny
- pyromanx, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1So... you read digg and browse beer related comments. I'm guessing a bribe would work. I have more beer where that came from. In fact, the reason I keep going to the server room is because I've installed a kegerator there.
- inactive, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I'm guessing you were almost there when you posted this.
