- aussiejan, on 05/10/2008, -0/+16Good decision. Historical use should have some bearing in this. Here in Australia people have been wearing Ugg Boots (really warm and ugly slippers) for probably more than 100 years. We heard a few years ago that an American company was trying to trademark the name and prevent Australian companies from using it. That didn't go down well Down Under.
- smotpoker, on 05/10/2008, -0/+16seriously... there is definitely something ***** up when you can run around patenting life/organisms. Patent the techniques all you want but patenting the result is, especially when it is alive and introduced to nature, a VERY serious threat to economy, ecology and genetic purity. During a global food shortage, all three are threats everyone can do without.
Not only do people risk suits from accidental (or even intentional) cross-pollination but they also risk ending up with a bunch of sterile seeds for next year's crop (or lost/corrupt genetics after years of selective breeding). What happens if an entire region's crops is infected with genes of a patented strain? And then many/most are affected are subsequently sued by Monsanto and the like?
Ecology is probably less threatened than small farmers - but that isn't guaranteed and imbalances due to funky crop properties/behaviors can have an equally substantial impact on economy and food surpluses. This GM ***** is probably the most significant example of how badly our IP laws need to be reformed.
This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened in Mexico due to us. We steal half of our country from them after we were welcomed with open arms, then we try to lynch them for crossing the border when they are impoverished/starving, then we try to exploit them even worse than in the past by suing them for what little they do have. First corn, now beans; what's next?
The peoples of both countries are being exploited by the government, corporations or some combination thereof. We need to seriously stop knit-picking/bickering with those who have the least resources/actions available and focus challenging and reforming those who have the most yet continue to do ***** up ***** out of greed or laziness etc - akimbo, on 05/10/2008, -1/+16***** THE BIAA (Bio Industry Association of America)
& ***** THE RIAA/MPAA - suppazone, on 05/10/2008, -0/+13Wtf who cares???? Are you so freaking ignorant that you can not see this could be a potential problem? Patents on natural products. Sure lets have poor people pay royalties when growing beans to support their families in latin america.
- insanebrain, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6Stupid patent *****. . .
- anshuman, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5Patenting food and medicines and other means of liviing (Yoga etc) is criminal, the Us Patent office voids itself of any credibility in eyes of World if it continuous to do this things.
- atarijedi, on 05/10/2008, -1/+6Uggly boots is a better name.
- duniyadnd, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5Yup, a while back someone was trying to patent Basmati Rice while another person in LA is patenting some form of Yoga which which is centuries years old from another country.
- 5xSTUN, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5The patent system is really, really a mess. I mean, it isn't just broken, lying there lifeless and non-functional, it's gone haywire, flinging sharp metal shards at everyone. People and companies are being granted just ridiculous patents, and are being allowed to use overly-broad patents to sue anyone they want for anything. I mean, literally, really, just suing anyone they want for any reason.
Look up the story of "Pangea Intellectual Properties." You'll read about a guy who knew exactly how to abuse this system, and was getting away with it until a group of his victims fought back. - karel747, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3This doesn't make any sense. He was granted a patent for his specially breaded yellow beans... How does that patent apply to foreign yellow beans which aren't derived from his stock?
Not only is Proctor a colossal ***** for charging licensing fees on beans he doesn't hold any rights for, but our patent system is ***** brain-dead since it allowed this crap to go on for as long as it did.
Another disappointment for the human race. - charlietuna, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3BioPiracy? That word "Piracy" sure gets a lot of use. Seems real raping, pillaging and burning is losing much of the original horror in the pr.ocess.
- Bodhinature, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Patenting nature is patently evil.
- jessehadden, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Red herring: that the patent may be invalid because people had already been eating the beans for a long time. Really frakked up: beans are patentable.
- kayjay, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2at least this will keep me from downloading pirate copies of beans from the piratebay
- Goodanswer, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Just goes to show you that if if can be stamped, marked, patented or just outright stolen our politicians will find a way to make it so.
Shameful - smotpoker, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Because only corporations can make pizza or beer?
- momsshizzle, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2Si amigos.

- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2Wow, what a dumbass.
Yeah, I see by your other comments all you are is a dumbass with no redeeming qualities.
Get a life, loser. - DalamarArgent, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Wasn't there a story a few days ago about some patented GM corn or wheat or something like that being grown for commercial use pollinating some other guys stock nearby with the results being that the other guy got sued for infringing on the patented product when he was growing it for local food stock.
- CiXeL, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1read up on the Orpan Works Act of 2008. theyre trying to make it legal to steal photos you take and stuff you write on the internet so they can make tons of money with them.
- AzureRise, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I'm gonna patent that.
- cyranthus, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2this guy should go work for Microsoft.
- AzureRise, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3Lets smoke weed drink beer and order pizza ignoring the fact that we're supporting two major corporations!
- spence798, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0Finally, I will no longer be driven to the black market to obtain my precious Enola.
- CiXeL, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2just plain ***** CORPORATIONS
