- Ghostalker, on 11/14/2009, -0/+21Um sorry, whoever wrote this article has never had a meal prepared by Sodexho Food Services. I would imagine most people never heard of them, as they primarily cater to prison's and school dining halls.
- Shitokki, on 11/13/2009, -1/+20The food at VA Tech was really good. Although, my opinion may be skewed since I was high on codeine most of the time I ate there.
- L0NER, on 11/14/2009, -1/+15Replaced by fast food and swipe cards
- Charlesbian, on 11/14/2009, -0/+11Reads like a press release. At UW-Madison the food resembled gourmet only in looks. The burrito here has everything a Chipotle has, but it tastes much much worse. Same goes for the burgers, chinese, pizza, and everything else. It's also much more expensive despite the campus having an a-la-carte pricing system. $7.50 for a microwaved chicken breast soaked in soy sauce? Even the grocery system is lame, 10$ boxes of cereal. The only thing worth eating is the late night take out menus, stuff like nachos and calzones, but you would have to actively try to mess up simple nachos.
- Coven, on 11/14/2009, -0/+10I worked in a Sodexho run meal hall at my school.
I tried my best to eat elsewhere. - WordsnCollision, on 11/13/2009, -1/+9Not just colleges - I not-so-fondly recall the cellophane-wrapped "monkey meat" hamburgers sold at our Junior High's cafeteria.
- ZacT, on 11/14/2009, -0/+8Is this a paid advertisement? The food at my school is horrible. The Faculty regularly warn new students about eating in the cafeteria and getting sick. Of course, the school signed a contract so that there is only on food provider on campus, so they don't have to make good food.
- hokiedan99, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6hahaha did you get the Lobster from west end?
VT is the best place to gain the freshmen 15. And now im working it off by doing some triple integrals. - djmattmcg, on 11/14/2009, -1/+7I miss pizza day.
- djmattmcg, on 11/14/2009, -0/+6This is absolutely the same situation at the university I attend. Everything "looks good," but tastes awful - and is way over-priced. The restaurants across the street from the cafeteria are packed at lunch time.
- fr3nch, on 11/14/2009, -0/+5I wish they would tell this to my college cafeteria. I gained 20 lbs my freshman year and lost it in 4 months after I moved out of the dorms and stopped eating college food. Its UNR if anyones wondering.
- Tarkaan, on 11/14/2009, -0/+5I was a teacher in the US about ten years ago, and yes, we ate the same slop they fed the kids. Most of us brought lunch.
- ATL, on 11/14/2009, -1/+5the dollar sign goes before the number
- piieerrrree, on 11/14/2009, -1/+5monday hotdogs, tuesday tacos, wednesdays hamburgers and chocolate milk
thursday sloppy joes and burritos in a bag - ceraphin, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4My school's meal system sucks, they constantly serve last nights leftovers and create subpar dishes with heavy amounts of garnish. yet the have the audacity to charge 11 bucks to get in to their disgusting buffet, I'm forgoing the meal plan next semester. a year and a half of that crap and i'd rather starve(not literally i'm aware how insensitive a statement that is, i mean as though i'll have a better shot at surviving with ramen but i chose that word to emphasize how upset i am in a more emotional manner, please do understand) the only time it was ever any good was when it was chicken finger night which happens once a month. I quickly realized why the only edible thing there was the fried food and pizza dipped in ranch dressing(heavily) and i wondered why i gained 30 pounds freshman year. they claim to offer vegan and healthy options but those are quite literally cardboard.
if i leave the dining halls i'll end up having to pay absurd amounts of money for food that should cost at most half the price it's being sold to me at and they're super stingy with everything and again the only real edible foods are fried. - Jaime2000, on 11/14/2009, -1/+4The meals in high school sucked, but I am content with my university's (UF) meal plan. I eat at Gator Dining corner all the time (my meal plan is for unlimited meals), and their menu usually contains at least one food which is to my liking.
http://www.bsd.ufl.edu/dining/menus/GCmenu.asp - incubusbeatsall, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3Seriously, Sodexho really doesn't make food that tastes bad - it's just horrible for you and they don't really offer health alternatives. You're going to find your standard assortment of chicken sandwiches, pasta, tacos, hamburgers, etc etc.
- inactive, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3The "major" university here has Domino's, Subway, chinese chicken, and a few other fast foods. No wonder the students look like "Fat Albert" waddling across campus.
- kg4gyt, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3Theres a reason VT is ranked #1 in the Princeton Review for campus food.
- Coven, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3They bring out the best food for stuff like orientation or family weekend when parents are likely to be on campus.
- 0biKwiet, on 11/14/2009, -1/+4Sodexho: Because 12 oz of yogurt is worth 3$.
The worst part is that even commuters have to purchase meal plans. Don't want 175$ worth of food that costs 4 times it's retail value? TOO BAD! - inactive, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3What the hell? This is basically boasting by one college. It is not any different at most schools. Schools that had crappy food in he 70s and 80s still have crappy food now.
- KingGorilla, on 11/14/2009, -1/+3Friday was Pizza Day, the best day of the week
It always came with salad and a side of cold green beans - darkfate, on 11/14/2009, -1/+3My college uses them. They aren't THAT bad. I usually get wraps when I can since I see them cut the meat there so I know they're a little fresh. The burgers literally made me sick one night, but the chicken patties are OK. Occasionally they like to use leftovers in the pizza though. One night, we'll have buffalo chicken. Buffalo chicken pizza was an option the next day. The grilled chicken is horrible though, but I guess it really depends on who makes it. The breakfast is actually really good. French toast sticks are the *****. Plus, you can't go wrong with a little cinnamon toast crunch.
- SEN5241, on 11/14/2009, -2/+4I miss mystery meat. We could get it to stick to the ceiling by flipping it up on a napkin.
- greenmoonice, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2For a crippling lifetime debt of $150,000 they should at least give you good food for those four years.
- hawkspur, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Texas Tech has reasonably good food, and it's all actually priced below market. 75 cent large drink ftw
- Coven, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2I worked the grill for 2 semesters. We had to literally cook every last drop of flavor out of those burgers. They were hockey pucks by the time we were done with them. The sauce they gave us to put on the burgers was awesome though, and I still use it to this day.
ketchup + mayo + Worcestershire + a bit of garlic powder - Ghostalker, on 11/15/2009, -0/+2@Coven - Yeah I noticed that all the time. Better is how the food is recycled afterward. Like the baked chicken will become chicken sandwichs the next day, and the day after it'll be ground up into chicken fajitas, and then finally mixed in broth and served as chicken noodle stew.
I didn't believe it until I noticed they left the skin on some parts and you could see the seasons from it's former life as a baked chicken wing. - jmgoody311, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2I actually attend UMiami, whose food services are run by Chartwells, one of the companies mentioned in the article. As someone who has been on the meal plan for 3 semesters now, I would just like to say that mystery meet does indeed still exist, and Chartwells food is ***** horrifyingly bad. It also costs between $8 and $10 per meal on the meal plan, when I could get a much more filling and delicious meal at Subway for about $5.
- absurdist, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Agreed. I never had a crunchy hamburger (think chewing on balsa wood crunchy) outside of my H.S. cafeteria.
- ApeInago, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_4217
3 USD - ApeInago, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Sounds like the same company that works our food here at vermont tech. They are getting better, but i think a lot of it has to do with poor staff training.
- GTQ21, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1It's all about chicken tenders nights. My school actually gave out coupons so each person could only get one serving of them. The coupons were used like cigarette packs in prison.
- norwegianlegion, on 11/14/2009, -1/+2When I was in high school, both the meat and the vegetables always seemed to have an unholy tinge of gray to them. I probably got parasites.
- dickgenius, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1Umm, none of the food mentioned in the "article" seemed all that healthy OR interesting (try the recipe's at home?!) so what does it have to do with the title and preface? Pizza, spaghetti and hamburgers, what?
- yifanlu94, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1In high school, we don't get fresh cooked meals. Everything is frozen for years (and are packaged by no-name brands like St. Jose's Beef Burritos), microwaved, and served. I guess wither it's cooked or frozen, ***** still tastes like *****.
- pikelet, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1I'm suddenly feeling appreciative of the food at University of Auckland after reading these comments. Never thought THAT would come out of my mouth. The cafeterias suck, but then again we also have two bars, three - four nice cafes (they spring up from nowhere..if I'm correct, we currently have business school cafe, Spicers upstairs in OGG, Strata in the Info Commons and Slurp, which I included with the bars), awesome sushi and some coffee shops.
Come to think of it, I don't even know if you can buy pizza on campus, let alone Dominos like I just read above.
Of course, it's all heinously expensive (Munchy Mart...urgrhrrhrhrhrh) but at least there's always something edible and if it's student allowance payment day, possibly the budget stretches to delicious! - diggon, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Should read more like... "No more mystery meat these days. Instead students can bite into tasty fresh chicken wings that are still bleeding profusely." Great job Aramark...
- jacktitan, on 11/14/2009, -1/+2Hooray for Pizza Day! Hooray for Pizza Day! The best day of the week!
- lusenok2, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Chartwells?
I work at campus with where eateries are operated by Chartwells. "Mystery meat" is indeed there. Foods tastes horrible and it's way too expensive.
There are no vegetable options except banana and apples which cost $1 a piece.
$10 for a piece of chichen with spagetti? Check!
$4.50 for a slice of pizza? Check!
$2 plain coffee? Check! - jacktitan, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1If you ever manage to attend an event at your school where sodexho caters with their top tier of food, it's really nice. I attended a lecture a few weeks ago and ate some really awesome quiche and despite expecting to die that night based on past experience, quite enjoyed it and didn't even get the rapid bowel movements that usually ensue.
- flip2trip, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1When I attended college (way back in the 80's) there were two things that absolutely rocked in the cafeteria: breakfast and the potato bar. At breakfast you had the choice of buffet, or you could go to the omelet bar. The potato bar was the best though, you could get a huge potato loaded with any toppings (my favorite was to load it with chili, cheese and onions) with a drink all for about $3. Also, if you went with the meal card they would add 10% to your total, needless to say I never saw a student pay cash the whole time I was there.
- supersuperduper, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1That article was terribly written.
- x2wenty4x, on 11/14/2009, -1/+1Our food at Temple is provided by Sodexo. Most of it is pretty good. Also they have recently been adding healthier food choices, however I haven't tried them.
- flailure, on 11/14/2009, -2/+0...But they still put laxatives in the food to break it up before it hits the pipes.
- Puppytwo, on 11/14/2009, -6/+2Im 16 still in highschool, and we get pretty good food. Salmon with a side ( rice or something ) and other stuff. Burgers, chicken strips, fries are there too, roastbeef, we get lots of variety and its all really good.
