- oreonblade, on 12/07/2007, -1/+118You got an A! Reward yourself by having a Big Mac!
You got an F...have some comfort food. May I suggest the Big Mac? - gbarberi, on 12/07/2007, -4/+115There are some places that Ads do NOT belong.
- acceleration, on 12/07/2007, -0/+79"The ad promises free Happy Meals to kids with good grades"
...and job offers to the kids who get bad grades. - pintomp3, on 12/07/2007, -4/+78" i can't figure out why johny is failing gym. oh look, his next value meal gets supersized for free"

- rompom7, on 12/07/2007, -1/+40Leela: "Didn't you have ads in the 20th century?"
Fry: "Well sure, but not in our dreams! Only on tv and radio...and in magazines...and movies. And at ball games, on buses, and milk cartons, and t-shirts, and bananas, and written on the sky. But not in dreams! No sirree." - alcoholanon, on 12/07/2007, -9/+42We got free pizza for reading when I was a kid.
I think it's a good idea. Not politically correct, but still, at least not a bad idea. :D - joshuaer, on 12/07/2007, -0/+23Welcome to English class brought to you by Carl's Jr. !!
- MarkDykeman, on 12/07/2007, -0/+23I suppose there's a rationalization somewhere that this Happy Meal couple might provide the kids with an incentive to get good grades. Back in the 80s a nearby video arcade had a similar promotion for free games. BUT... they never tried to brand the damned report cards, which is definitely going too far. Next I'll be needing a McPencil to go with my McNotebook...
- clickmyface, on 12/07/2007, -0/+22I got an F for fries mom! YAY!
- JLecker, on 12/07/2007, -1/+22That kid has more rolls than a bakery.
- ZenMojo, on 12/07/2007, -1/+20The reward isn't the problem, the advertising is the problem. Can we set it up so that our kids aren't sold to the highest bidder?
- asskey, on 12/07/2007, -0/+16I think we're dead. Time is going really really really slowly.
- schniff, on 12/07/2007, -1/+16Good idea in theory. Give some incentive to kids for getting good grades, kids get something healthy, school does not have to pay for printing and the company gets some business. Unfortunately, McDonald's happy meals are actually just gelatinous pieces of ***** stamped into familiar food shapes, and they are not a company ultimately driven to make your child a better scholar or healthy adult. I think a pool party at the YMCA or discounts on a new bike (which means the parents may get a new bike so they can ride with their kids, hence get some physical activity) would be a much more responsible relationship between school and local business.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -3/+18I like McDonalds. It's yummy. The key is to eat it in moderation. I have it maybe once every 3 weeks. That way, you don't get fat!
- h4mx0r, on 12/07/2007, -1/+15And an offer for a free ipod if they send your resume to five other employers.
- mrbbad, on 12/07/2007, -4/+18This was a good deal for the school and kids. McD picked up the printing tab and gave away a free happy meal with kids report cards. WHO CARES? Now if they opened a McD in the school, that would be a bit different; but this is so irrelevant -- it could only take someone and/or some-group with way too much time on their hands to cause a stir over this. Would people rather the school pay that tab? Then offer kids free strawberries? That isn't special at all. Simply put, this is a good deal for everyone. Myself, I remember the book-it program where we could work towards free mini-pizzas, I loved that program when I was a kid -- I worked hard to earn that little pizza -- THESE THINGS WORK WELL AS REWARDS and should not be badgered. EOF.
- vsujohn2, on 12/07/2007, -0/+13***** you, I'm eating!
- Rubab, on 12/07/2007, -7/+20he he he... who is paying whom? school or McDonalds
- knobtwiddler, on 12/07/2007, -0/+12the real crime here is that schools can't afford the fkn 1600 bucks to print the report cards, not that corporations step in to fill a need and take advantage of the advertising opportunity. as much as i dislike mcdonalds, they're not really to blame. its our insane, out of whack priorities in government... that we can afford 50 million dollars for a tomahawk missile to blow some afghan sheep herder off the side of a mountain, but we can't afford 1600 bucks to print report cards
- Error601, on 12/07/2007, -1/+13We got free McDonald's sundays for reading books back in the 70s.
- Murdats, on 12/07/2007, -1/+13pass maths and get a free upgrade with your next meal
- lisaawesome, on 12/07/2007, -1/+13I was going to say the same thing! I loved the Book It program when I was a kid. It didn't turn me into a big fat slob either.
- CommentPoster, on 12/07/2007, -3/+14Eh? I remember getting free donuts from Krispy Kreme for good grades, and pizza from Pizza Hut for reading. I have no problem with being offered free food.
- HunterTV, on 12/07/2007, -1/+11I hear even goatse is renting out space.
- RandomGorilla, on 12/07/2007, -0/+9This is what happens when the educational system doesn't get funded properly. They have to make up for the cash shortfalls somehow, after all. I guess if that means making deals with the demon clown then so be it. Welcome to the future of education; Make sure that your kid has a good cardiologist.
- benplaut, on 12/07/2007, -0/+8Yea, that was awesome. I don't think I've been to Pizza Hut since 4th grade, though. Or eaten a "personal pan pizza" anywhere else...
- BinaryFragger, on 12/07/2007, -0/+7Fast food is only part of the problem.
You also have to factor in taking the elevator to the second floor, using drive-through ATMs, parking illegally at the grocery store so you don't have to push your shopping cart more than 10 feet in the parking lot, sitting in front of the computer all day, and so on.
Our lazy lifestyle combined with crap food is killing us. - Justice101, on 12/07/2007, -1/+8Next time, I send in a resume I'll have to put some Snorg Tee ads, on the side.
- SauceSpot, on 12/07/2007, -1/+7the thought of free pizza for reading still didn't motivate me enough when i was a kid, eh
- brandonpierce, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6yea this is nothing new... remember growing up when we could take our report cards in to McDonald's, and every A would get us something?
- inhaler, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6I still have my holographic Book It! Pin... :D
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -3/+9I think we're dying.. time is going by so slow..
- disillusioned, on 12/07/2007, -1/+7Pizza Hut's Book-It program kicked ass. I read SO much. And also ended up fat. I'm okay with both outcomes.
- ConanTL, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5A lot of kids already go to McD's several times a week and they are not the ones paying in the first place (grades 2-5), so really there is little incentive at all.
- Mothrog, on 12/07/2007, -2/+7Poor eating habits and a sedentary life style are killing us, not fast food. There's nothing wrong with eating at a fast food place on occasion, so long as its done in moderation.
- pfranz, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5The problem is not lack of money but misappropriation of available funds. I'm a product of the Seminole County Public School system spotlighted in the article. The grossest of these were the programs to save money that weren't completely thought out and abandoned before you could expect results--like "block scheduling" and "year-round school." My high school was renovated when implementing these. The thought was, with these systems, lockers weren't needed, so the old lockers were installed in another school. When these programs were abandoned (after only a year), they scrambled for lockers--this was just one of the wastes I observed because of this behavior.
I think the worst was adding shiny new computers for each and every teacher before implementing any sort of use for them (or training for the teachers). They all had nice computers on their desks, yet they couldn't afford books for the class. They had programs like a "class set" of old, torn books that we couldn't take home to study with because there weren't enough books for each student to be assigned one.
Some of my teachers used their own equipment for things like photocopies because they were given a very low quota of like 2 photocopies per student per week. The alternative was copying pages and pages of information off the board (instead of instruction time)--which is an ok way of teaching, but with limited instruction time would have been better used with actual instruction and q/a before sending us off to do the homework assignments. - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5Sure it is. Parents tell their kids that if they get good grades they will go to McDonalds. They see it as a bonus trip to McDonalds. Kids are not going to sit there and tell their parents "But we are going anyway."
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5except they don't use that anymore.
- noahco, on 12/07/2007, -1/+6i would also rather have a smart fat kid than a stupid skinny kid that ends up on welfare
- inhaler, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5Wow, I thought he was wearing like a longsleeve shirt at first glance. How do you as a parent do that to your child....Why is that not abuse...
- TheDiggerz, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5McSchool - The new education system for America. The government can't afford to fund public schools anymore because of the billions of dollars that they spent on the war, so now it has come ot this.
- HollowMarkeD, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4Never saw the attraction of Muck Burgers anyway. Do you think they were deliberately having a laugh when they called all their crap food with that pre-text? Targeting kids to sell your preservative laden MSG addictive special sauce is so cynical, these guys must be responsible for a lot of the lard arses waddling around at the moment.
- ronaldinho, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4You see, the kid is already a valuable employee of Michelin Tires......
- tymme, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4If you got an F, I think it's better to just prepare for a life of asking, "Do you want fries with that?"
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5There is more to being fat that just eating a hamburger
- mal1964, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4Its getting better there,http://www.mcdonalds.com/usa/eat/nutrition_info.ht ...
I take my five year old son there once a month , and he gets a kids meal and loves it. You can eat most anything in moderation, fast food wont kill anyone if you don't abuse it. I would never tell my son those places are horrible that's the lazy way. You teach them, and the easiest way is to cook good food with a nice balance and they will like what you like most of the time. and if you eat right from the start they will do it forever. - dudefaceguyman, on 12/07/2007, -2/+6My younger brother is 11...
Hopefully he gets good grades so I can steal his happy meal..Mini hamburgers/fries/cokes are tasty and they make me feel like a giant. =] - thatdiabeticguy, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4At my elementary school we used to get free happy meal coupons when we got all A's.
