- ScottMcIntyre, on 10/11/2008, -1/+18An innovative idea which will have a major environmental impact- when the winery isn't in use over the summer months, the energy it generates will be used to power the local residential area and nearby city of 1695 homes.
QFA:"The installation will offset around 1.6 million pounds of Carbon Dioxide, 1,600 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide, and 2,900 pounds or Nitrogen Oxides annually." - bixby1, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13I'm gonna be a solar-powered drunk.
- else7en, on 10/12/2008, -1/+12aren't all vineyards solar powered?
- Surferess, on 10/11/2008, -1/+10It kind of looks like HAARP w/ all that hardware!
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+9I really hope this trend continues and more and more of our power comes from renewable sources of energy. I'm personally been on the verge of buying land in places that receive a good amount of sun each year to start my own array. In the end it is going to come down to the long term cost of the energy produced, and the cost of the batteries to store that energy (a very limiting factor right now); it is my belief that it can be done, but while so much of our money is funneled into the fossil fuel industry, the adoption will be slower than it could otherwise be.
This is another step in the right direction though. - SkinnerBox, on 10/11/2008, -1/+7I work at a winery in Napa and this is not the first winery to go this way. Unfortunately a lot of us on the valley floor dry farm, so we don't have irrigation ponds and wouldn't be able to do quite the same thing.
- nekkox, on 10/11/2008, -3/+9***** the RIAA
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4this is so cool!
- rsbryswrrl, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2Hmm, why do you think the power companies and corporatocracy are so against solar and wind energy? Because it de-commodifies power and returns it to the hands of the consumers.
- Ace75, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2Monterey County, Monterrey is a city in Mexico.
- palewook, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2wonder what a hailstorm would do to those panels.. or a 12 year old with a slingshot..
- psud0, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2Such business should be freed from any taxes.

- bearsandbulls, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1Good to know. No matter how bad the depression gets we will still be getting drunk. Yah fractional independence.
- seanny19, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1I didn't know it took that much power to make wine. It must be a huge winery.
- drlha, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1Then I also recommend beer from the Anderson Valley Brewing Company, which has a solar powered brewery. That and Boont Amber Ale is one of America's best beers.
- disrupter, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1Reminds me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K4U01vcsYE
- amcoms, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1Such a fantastic project to promote the use of Solar PV. If only the technology could be rolled out in the UK like this project demonstrates it has so many benefits.
- FelixDeluxe, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1That's awesome.
Now lets wait for all the oil lobby shills to tell us why it's actually bad for the environment and it won't work anyway. - pamperedk9club, on 10/12/2008, -2/+1it looks like the inside of my computer. If it help save money and is a major environmental impact i'm all for it. http://www.pamperedk9club.com
- jotate, on 10/12/2008, -3/+1I thought light was bad for wine?
- whoreable, on 10/12/2008, -4/+1Stop wining! Who is your daddy and what does he do?
