time.com — The message from many Indians over the past two weeks has been stark: Americans should stop blaming others and start eating less...

In the days since, though, India's most nationalistic politicians, newspapers and television pundits have expressed outrage, calling Bush's comment rude and insensitive because it suggests Indians are to blame for recent global food price increases and implies they should eat less. "U.S. Eats 5 Times More than India Per Capita" blared a headline in the Times of India"

Agreed that nationalism is a real problem in India, and perhaps it should look at it's own desperate corruption and overpopulation that results in a government that struggles to deal with food shortages and healthcare.

I weigh 140 lbs. Stop breeding like rabbits, have you heard of birth control? Or do you just make everything for export only?- str3ama, on 05/16/2008, -20/+2wow that was idiotic, one of the biggest problems facing America and Canada is that they both have low birth rates. Believe it or not but high birth rate is actually a good thing, even with overpopulation - their are more gains then losses in having a hefty population.
However having a population that is overweight, is more of a problem not just because of people's health and such - but also because we're becoming a largely consumptive society. As you mentioned, most of our stuff is imported to us - very little is actually produced here, and we've lost much of our autonomy now that we depend on so many foreign nations to clothe and feed us.- ripple123, on 05/16/2008, -2/+11Sure man, I mean, if theres one problem the worlds got, its not enough people......
- Lyph5, on 05/16/2008, -5/+4First, high birth rates are terrible things. Means that the parents have to work more and more and get to raise their children less and less.
Second, it's not overpopulation it's overcrowding.
Third, we eat more fatty foods because we're rushing between two jobs, soccer practice for the kids, the store to get groceries, and day-care. We don't have the time to sit down and eat a nice home-cooked meal with the family. That's why we eat fast food.
There are TONS of kids in the US that are abandoned by their parents or put up for adoption. The birth rate may be low compared to India and Africa, but it's not 0. - mike17032, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Enough people jump the border every year to offset our low birth rates. We are still gaining people, and we are even doing so at a healthy rate.
Russia looses about 100k people a year last I heard, thats an issue.- hempydave, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1There are less of us , so we have to be bigger to make up for it.

Quote from http://www.usaid.gov/our_work/humanitarian_assista ...
Current USG Programs
Administered by USAID, the P.L. 480 Title II program is the largest U.S. food aid program. In FY 2007, the USG provided more than 2.1 million metric tons (MT) of P.L. 480 Title II commodities, worth $1.54 billion. Food assistance provided under this program reached an estimated 32 million beneficiaries throughout the world.
On April 14, President George W. Bush directed the Secretary of Agriculture to draw down on the Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust to meet emergency food aid needs. With this action, the USG made available an estimated $200 million in emergency food aid through USAID. USAID is also committing an additional $40 million as a bridge to further funding to be announced on May 1 by President Bush. This additional food aid will address the near term impact of rising commodity prices on U.S. emergency food aid programs. This assistance will be used to meet unanticipated food aid needs in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Haiti, Bangladesh, Somalia, Mauritania, Uganda, and Sudan. WFP and NGOs will distribute this assistance.

- mike17032, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Yes, you would have had huge die offs due to food if the US had not stepped in to help. Both with food exports and teaching you how to grow it using modern methods.

- mike17032, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Yes, you would have had huge die offs due to food if the US had not stepped in to help. Both with food exports and teaching you how to grow it using modern methods.
- jrbrewin, on 05/16/2008, -3/+1i'm sure everyone would be entirely happy if america trying to dictate how the rest of the world operates, and stopped giving out 'help', especially the people of iraq and afghanistan. $200m (which is worth, what, about £3 these days anyway) hardly outweighs the trillions wasted on some stupid war in which you've killed more than you'll ever help.
- execute85, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1Cows are an inefficient source of protein. So they wouldn't be better off eating cows. It takes 100 pounds of vegetable matter to produce 1 pound of beef.
Vegetarian lifestyles are the most efficient, resource wife, and probably the only way India can feed its burgeoning population.- dagamore, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4While I agree with you about the efficiency issue of beef production. But they already have the cows, and they are already wasting the grain/grass to feed them and keep in mind that cows can and do eat grains such as switch grass that people can not get any protein from. So while it is not the best option, getting ride of the cast system, new farming methods, and a better food distro-network would be a long way to fixing the problem of India not being able to feed it self.
My point that was poorly worded was. The problem of starvation in India is not the US fault, nor is the over consumption by the US causing the starvation in India. Because the US Exports more food then it imports, and is feeding a lot of the world. And that does not give the US the right to dictate to the countries it is feeding how to live, but is should at least get the same said countries to shut the ***** up.
But that won’t happen.- hempydave, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2They are stupid , let them die if you believe in Evolution/Darwinism so hard
- execute85, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1The cows just wander around and eat grass on the side of the road. So it's not like tons of grain is going toward feedind the cows. Plus, there's not that many of them (since no one grows them for meat).
Of course, modernizing their food production would help, but eating beef wouldn't.
- mike17032, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3Your comment is so full of fail its hard to grasp.
They already have the cows, and keep the cows alive. Its a whole lot more inefficient to raise food and keep it alive forever than it is to eat the damn thing.
Oh, and that 1 pound of beef tastes ***** awsome. And in the US, it hardly costs anything. mmmmmmmm.

- d3vmax, on 05/16/2008, -5/+43I am from Bombay and I know there is a huge divide between the population in terms of wealth, education, access to facilities, etc. There are many obese people in India not only among the better off but even the middle class due to the opening of the economy, better access to food varieties and progress in general.
Give India time it is still developing. The problems spoken in the above comments like riding on top of trains, 'indoor plumbing' (???), Starvation and diseases, etc will be reduced in the coming decade and hopefully gone in 20 years times as most of the population will be better educated, the infrastructure will be developed as right now it is in a terrible state.
India is made up of different states with different cultures and people, much like Europe but it is a single country and to bring about changes in people's perception and cultural habits is hard but some how the country still runs. After US got independence I am sure not all problems were solved and it took many years to become developed and during that developing phase there was less emphasis on health and safety. The same goes with the current developing regions.
Oh well time will tell if what I have written above is right or wrong. But I am sure you will read a headline that says ,'The number of obese people rising rapidly in India'. Sooo... India telling the US to eat less is not credible. You have two options. 1: institute modern agricultural practices like the US which will produce more food at a lower cost. 2: Institute Chinese style birth control. That or go hungry. Not our fault.- flashback99, on 05/16/2008, -6/+8India is not eating more dude. The population is high in India, so more people are consuming more in general. Indian civilization (encompassing those diverse kingdoms) = over 3000 years old
American civilization = over 3000 years old too, buddy. What you call American civilization, like all western civilizations, started in ancient Greece with people like Homer.- jozb, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2You mean European Civilization or Western Civilization is 3000 years old. America belonged to the natives till Columbus landed here, whilst looking for India. Hence the name "Indians" for the native Americans who were living in the Americas.
I'm talking about the starting point since we are comparing populations of US vs. India. Population of India has a continuous existence for 3000 years. The natives of America were almost wiped out, so there is a reset point around 300 years ago when the population began to start growing again.
If you want to compare European / White to Indian civilization, that is no problem too.
India - 1 billion people
China - 1 billion people
Southeast Asia - 0.5 billion
Africa - will reach 1 billion people soon (922 million as of 2005)
Middle east - 0.5 billion
Europeans / Whites - 2 billion
So how did the OP come up with the idea India is overpopulating the world, without comparing the other whites who are spread around the world, (austraila, south america, north america, europe, russia). They constitute to over 2 billion people almost double the population of India. - brezhoneg, on 05/16/2008, -3/+0You are really making a lot of efforts to not understand.
First, Americans didn't magically appear out of nowhere 300 years ago. They are the continuation of a long line of civilization, the Western civilization.
Second, if you knew a bit of history outside of elementary school manuals, you would know that Native Americans merged with alien populations, mostly Africans and Europeans. They evolved, they didn't completely disappear. Lots of modern Americans have native ancestors. Lots of Natives also had black slaves, which is why people like Jimi Hendrix or James Earl Jones have native blood.
Third, yes, India and China among others are overpopulating the world, not because of their respective population at a given point of time, but because of their growth. Just look at how much their population INCREASED over the past 50 years. - jozb, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2just want to make something clear. it seems like you are saying American's are all part of this "western civilization", you do realize not everyone came from Greece. Your statement would offend lots of Africans, Chinese, because they are just as much an American as anybody from Europe.
"natives didn't completely disappear" ya thats why I said "natives of America were almost wiped out"
Nice use of the word "evolved." What you are talking about is called Ethnocide or Cultural genocide. "indigenous peoples of the Americas had been the victims of ethnocides (the destruction of a culture)."

- LukasSmith, on 05/16/2008, -2/+4They say if China or India were to reach American consumption rates they would consume everything on the planet. I mean I'm not angry these two nations are rising. But surely they could discover birth control and condoms on their way up. Because if you think there is no problem you are dead wrong. The more India and China wealth grows and the more they consume the more desperate the rest of the world will become and desperation leads to war war and more war. The problem today is that our civilization is too advanced. You know when you fight nature as modern medicine does, your asking for trouble. What we need is a good plague or two. Unfortunatly, we would probably be able to contain it before it could do much damage. Nature will not tolerate us much longer. Don't be afraid for nature, be afraid of nature.

American consumers aren't ignorant on this point, it is the companies who foolishly believe they are fooling consumers into believing their call is being answered by somebody at the company headquarters.
The consumers aren't fooled by the name or the location.

- Sh0rtcake, on 05/16/2008, -8/+3wow.. lots of ***** people on here.. times of transition are always the hardest in every aspect, especially relationships. this includes international relationships (ie: India and the US). times of transition are the hardest because while things are moving and people are forced to adjust to these ever-changing conditions, relationships weaken. they weaken because people have more/different/changing priorities. as relationships weaken, people become more self-destructive. this is evident in suicide rates- they go up during divorce, during economic shifts (depressions, recessions, wars), after deaths in the family, or even after losing your job. as these relationships become weak, people find less meaning in their own lives because it's almost like they're 'losing' a part of it. this is all relevant because we are all effected by each other and we are all in times of global economic transition. the best way to get through all of it is to STOP BLAMING EACH OTHER for our own problems and try to make changes in our every-day lives. improve your own relationships in your family. drive less, eat less, go outside more, exercise, grow your own food (if it's possible) walk to the store, practice safe sex, stop shopping for frivolous things (buy only what you NEED to survive), help your friends, help a stranger, volunteer, recycle, drive consciously, and tip your server even if she brought you the wrong salad. keep in mind- everyone would like things to change, but only those who want it do something about it.

Having lots of kids was the norm in many parts of the world and not just in India.- feelthelurve, on 05/16/2008, -2/+0Uhh the fertility rate for the US was about 2 children per woman as of 2007 (versus 3 for India). - UrbanVoyeur, on 05/16/2008, -2/+12The crux of the problem is population growth vs internal resources. India has not been able to produce enough to feed itself since the latter half of the 20th century. Therefore it must import food. Therefore it is at the mercy of commodity prices - food and fuel.
The question for right now is: Can India generate enough goods and services that the world values to both overcome this food deficit and proceed with development? The answer is, no, not at this time. So it is hit very hard when prices for fuel or food increase and since its population is increasing, the only answer is less food per person.
The question for the future is whether India can increase its output of goods and services the world wants fast enough to overcome its food deficit in the face of increased demand from a growing population. Given the exponential growth curve of population vs the linear growth of curve of national economies, this appears unlikely.
(Unfortunately, India does not have significant exportable quantities of fossil fuels, metals, timber or minerals. Therefore it must sell human labor. But India is also under-industrialized compared to say, China, Mexico Taiwan, Japan or Germany, and therefore cannot fully compete in the manufacture and finishing of goods. In short, India’s long term options are limited. )
The US is neither the direct cause of, nor the direct solution to the problem. What no one but China wants to talk about is population growth, specifically, slowing down population growth to buy time for industrialization and reduce the portion of the economy devoted to food importation.
Bottom line: India cannot feed itself and does not have enough of anything the world wants to buy to make up for the deficit. As its population is growing faster than its economy, the problem will only get worse. - TrunksTheMighty, on 05/16/2008, -8/+4I don't mean to sound racist or anything, but the only reason India isn't as "obese" as America is we HAVE food and like 3/4ths of that country is starving?
