- NWVG, on 05/25/2009, -0/+183We have an In-N-Out down the street from us, and probably go there at least once a month if not more. Only once have I had a bad experience when my burger was cold and was replaced with another burger that wasn't correct. I was nice when complaining and they quickly apologized and gave me my burger for free plus they took down my phone number saying someone would call. That's great service, but I really didn't expect or need someone to call me. The next day someone from corporate called me and apologized as well as getting my address to send me 2 free meals. I also now get Christmas cards from them. After that experience I don't even think about going somewhere else.
- MargotCross, on 05/24/2009, -2/+92im pretty sure in-n-out is recession proof! i've never seen one without a line out the door.
- ralphthemagi, on 05/25/2009, -1/+81It's not really a secret. In-N-Out just does what every other fast food chain did when they started out: decent quality food, made fast, that tastes good, for a low price. The difference is that every other chain has expanded to something massive, and in order to scale they've cut quality.
In-N-Out has basically stayed to the original formula. If they ever expand though, make no doubt about it: the food will inevitably go to *****. - boshhead, on 05/24/2009, -6/+83I hope I never have to move away from In-N-Out. After I had my first In-N-Out burger, trying to eat a burger from McDonald's or Burger King actually caused a gag reflex. (Seriously).
- Lederhosed, on 05/25/2009, -2/+69Two words: Animal Style
- IHaveALaserGun, on 05/25/2009, -1/+61I worked at In-N-Out for 6 years, putting myself through college with their higher than average wages ($8.00 when I started, when the minimum was $6.75). Ended up moving up, making up to 12 bucks an hour while flipping burgers. I can gladly say In-N-Out helped me get my bachelor's degree from Cal State Fullerton. Can any fast food chains claim the same?
I'm makin upwards of 70k a year, and I still have time to eat there at least once a week. It's the least I can do to pay them back. In-N-Out > everyone else. - twodollars, on 05/25/2009, -5/+50Dugg for a company that caters to stoners making $420,000,000 in revenue.
- yillip, on 05/25/2009, -1/+44Those are good burgers, Walter.
- shipwreck58, on 05/25/2009, -7/+48In N Out = Just one more reason why the East Coast Sucks.
- Laiden, on 05/25/2009, -0/+39Wow. That's ***** awesome.
I wish Canada had In-N-Out. - RubberBinder, on 05/25/2009, -1/+35The thing about In-N-Out is that it costs no more than BK or McDonald's, but it is much better food and service. Plus you get satisfaction in knowing your burger isn't going to be spit in.
- Willow01, on 05/25/2009, -0/+32Real fries that aren't frozen.....
- codyman, on 05/25/2009, -2/+31Cheap yet Excellent fast food
You go in there with 5 bucks and you walk out having eaten a big ass tasty burger, fries, and a coke, with some change still in your pocket and your stomach full - RexOfRome, on 05/25/2009, -3/+32What I like about In-N-Out is that they cater to adults, a very simple menu and no plastic gyms.
- sjbdallas, on 05/25/2009, -2/+27Went there twice last week while in Vegas. We need one in Texas.
- zeth006, on 05/25/2009, -0/+22HAH.
My friend who's a girl on multiple visits has asked for doggy style fries from male cashiers.
Guess that's how she likes it! - blapierre, on 05/25/2009, -1/+22Yeah, I had to move from CA to CT. No In-N-Out is probably the worst part about CT.
- robfrye, on 05/25/2009, -0/+17What are you guys talking about? They open new stores frequently, just not at the crazy expansion pace of others. They are expanding smart. They actually talk about it in the article.
- slicedoranges, on 05/25/2009, -0/+16McDonald's fries are delicious as hell, but with In N Out you know you're getting a potato that was sliced that morning, without being frozen for a year or taking a chemical bath afterward.
- JoeyNine, on 05/25/2009, -2/+18Here's the thing about In-N-Out. Aside from being the best damned drive through burger money can buy, the true key to their success is the employees. They always have a smile, never grumpy, and for ***** sake, they can speak english. That is a rarity in Southern California. Go to a Del Taco or a McDonald's in So Cal and see how easy it is to understand the clerk or have the clerk understand you. 50% of the time your order gets ***** to hell, mostly due to the language barrier.
- imacmike, on 05/25/2009, -0/+14I recently moved from California to Michigan. When I crave a double-double, I have to use Culver's as a surrogate. Unfortunately, they just don't satisfy the same way.
Like a cheap hooker, Culver's burgers go through the motions, but in the end, you know it's not true love. - willwork4ammo, on 05/25/2009, -0/+13But you guys have What-a-burger... for the short time I lived in Arlington, I really enjoyed it. It's no In-N-Out, but it's better than Burger King or McDowells.
- Number23, on 05/25/2009, -0/+12People want sugar, salt, fat, alcohol and orgasms.
- absurdist, on 05/25/2009, -0/+12Hell, when there's a lot of people, you know you're getting a potato that was sliced five minutes before it went into the fryer.
- tnoy, on 05/25/2009, -0/+12They expand the stores, but they do not expand the menu.
They know that a formula of hamburgers, fries and a shake works. They dont need the double bacon angus beef breakfast burrito to get a few extra sales. - absurdist, on 05/25/2009, -0/+11How in hell can you possibly even mention Friendly's in the same breath as Five Guys, except to show how horrible they are by comparison?
- TheDatabit, on 05/25/2009, -0/+11Where can I get a Double Bacon Angus Beef Breakfast Burrito? That sounds delicious!
- binaryspiral, on 05/25/2009, -1/+11I traveled to CA for a business trip. I was 35 miles away from the closest In and out, but heard they were so good - I skipped a swanky dinner to eat at one... best damn burger and fries I ever had and well worth the trip!
- NextGenXbox, on 05/25/2009, -1/+9I remember the first time I had an In-N-Out burger (which I ordered To Go) I actually drove back to get a SECOND burger -- something I have never done before -- eat two fast food burgers in one sitting.
- galanz, on 05/25/2009, -0/+8My favorite scene from that movie is them driving back from the In-N-Out with their windows smashed out of the Dude's car. I had to specifically hunt down an In-N-Out when I first went to California. Which was worth it.
- arplayer2k, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7@Dark
Haha. You have to suffer with that White Castle crap! :P - Billions, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7Oh man, I live three time zones away from an In-N-Out. This post has me on the brink of insanity. No doubt, when I'm visiting my native California 3-4 times a year, they are on the short Must-Eat-At list. Love that place... The religious scriptures printed in the folds of the cups and fries packets are a little weird, but the BURGERS keep me from thinking too hard about it.
- Samohtneas, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7I love their burgers, but my only solution here on the East coast is Five Guys.
- NYankee2003, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7i said it before, i'll say it again.... shut the ***** up donny.
- DarkCloud515, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7I'm with Laiden, but from NJ.
- techlinks, on 05/25/2009, -1/+8Have you never BBQ'd your own burger before? I don't see how that wouldn't make you gag while eating McDonalds also.
- ParaSwarm, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7There's always somebody who has to talk about themselves. Jesus, anybody can make a better burger than In N Out. But we're talking about drive-thru restaurants, not how unique you can be.
- dillibob, on 05/25/2009, -1/+8white castle is pretty good too.... WHY CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?!
- trafficlight, on 05/25/2009, -1/+7And that's the great part. They know it will go to ***** if they expand.
- arplayer2k, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6with Animal Style fries... well done.
- mikelieman, on 05/25/2009, -1/+7Harold and Kumar go to In-N-Out...
Nope, doesn't work... - videographer, on 05/25/2009, -1/+7Five Guys is OK, but you sure can't get a burger, fries and a drink for less than $10 there.
- FlyingCaveman, on 05/25/2009, -4/+10The seventh secret is using 7-legged cows.
- twoblink, on 05/25/2009, -1/+6There was an in-n-out next to my high school.. I never ate McDonalds for over 11 years after that In-n-out opened..
Double Double Animal Style! <-- Da Bomb. - DirtyBinLV, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5Any time you're really craving an in-n-out burger, just fly back to Vegas...and bring some friends...please.
- beachtrader, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4In that order?
- thedeadwalrus, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4It's not about expansion per se, it's about profit margins.
The idea is essentially the same model that is applied to stores, grocers, electronics, services, etc: offer a great service/product at a great price and expand. Take up more market share . Once you have a large enough base, decreasing input costs (such as, for example, ingredient quality) creates enormous profits.
Usually what happens is the owner or family that started it sells it off or it goes public. They take a windfall. The board of directors installs a CEO who is measured only by the profits he generates. He looks to cut costs as much as possible while keeping as many customers happy as possible. At first the decrease in service or quality might barely be noticeable - slightly thinner cuts of cheese, slightly less quality buns, etc. After than CEO is finished and moved on, the next comes in and needs to increase profits so that he can put it on his resume and move on.
Eventually the place serves pure *****. Happens every time. - TunisEleven, on 05/25/2009, -1/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Guys
- stockjones, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4One thing they do to a tee is comply to the KISS concept. They do that well. Keep things simple and for the cost you get a damn good burger. A REAL burger. If you think a Carl's Junior burger is real you need to go to a true blue outdoor barbecue. The only other fast food chain who makes burgers from scratch (fresh ground beef and make their own patties) is Wendy's.
- dancantone, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4Eating one now..."Animal Style" is best!
