The ethanol ("alcohol") in beer has a dehydrating effect on the body. Currently, dehydration is believed to be the primary factor in causing hangovers. It's possible that after drinking beer, the subjects "felt" less hydrated (just as you feel full after eating food that has no nutritional value), but the chemistry in their bodies will not agree.
*Edit* Wikipedia has this to say: "However, a study published in April 2009 from Great Britain publicizes the benefits of consuming a bacon sandwich as an actual means to cure a hangover, which is attributed to the benefits of high amounts of amino acids.[13]"
Awesome. - statdat, on 06/06/2009, -0/+38I'm not sure how correct this is but bear with me. Alcohol is a diuretic meaning chemicals in it tell your body that it has too much water and that it needs to let some of it go. Even if you don't have that much water, the effects of the diuretic make your body feel that it does. This is why you pee so much when drinking beer and most likely why one gets a hangover after drinking heavily and not drinking any water. (Headaches from dehydration).
So any small benefits you might gain from rehydration from beer (as hinted by the article) will be lost when the diuretic in alcohol tells your body to go pee.
I'm not sure why I felt like writing all this, but, I'm still gonna drink water at the gym. - drunkenoaf, on 06/06/2009, -0/+31OK. Alcohol suppresses the production of a hormone called ADH -- antidiuretic hormone -- released from (IIRC) the hypothalamus.
ADH stops your kidneys from pissing out all of the water in your blood. It also makes you feel thirsty. Beer counteracts this.
Beer will make you -- in the short term -- feel less thirsty -- and perhaps in the short term, you might get some sort of effect (even if it may be placebo). This ain't the same as rehydrating you. The headline is *****.
But for feck's sake, don't think it rehydrates you (it doesn't). Notice how all of those athletes at the Olympics aren't rehydrating on beer. There is a reason why. - dognadz, on 06/06/2009, -2/+27copied, pasted, emailed to wife, cc'd to mom and physician.
- rahulkolasseri, on 06/06/2009, -1/+25it isn't to make people drink more Gatorade, its because , when you sweat, you lose salt, and need to replenish it afterwards.
- stonebear, on 06/06/2009, -3/+24Sorry, but it's not the alcohol. Any beverage containing a carbohydrate has the same property; Gatorade, for example. I don't recall why, but I Heard it in a Nick Hall talk.
- silvern88, on 06/06/2009, -3/+24*****!! After the first two beers I'm pissing every 15 minutes for the rest of the night. You can't tell me that's hydrating!
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -1/+21Bacon: Is there anything it can't do?
- joshmoney, on 06/06/2009, -0/+18It's got electrolytes!
- NeddieSeagoon, on 06/06/2009, -0/+16As well as replacing what's lost by sweating, the salt also makes your body absorb the water more quickly.
- jster89, on 06/06/2009, -0/+11It's to do with taking advantage of a cell pump which imports both glucose and sodium into the cells of the intestines. This is the reason why those with diarrhoeal illness take "Oral Rehydration Salts" it's basically just a mixture of salt (sodium chloride) and sugar (sucrose or glucose), along with other salts. It helps to absorb more water and correct any electrolyte imbalances.
- Gwyddyon, on 06/06/2009, -1/+11No, the article was talking about beer.
- inactive, on 06/06/2009, -0/+9Maybe American beer.
Like makin' love in a canoe. - SexyGeekGirl, on 06/06/2009, -1/+9yeah! beer me
- ucbmckee, on 06/06/2009, -0/+7You sound like you desperately want this study to be true, with how badly you're attacking anyone suggesting otherwise. Get a grip, dude. Just because one study is published by some fifth rate university doesn't make something a fact. That's not how science works. This will have to be peer reviewed, replicated by other labs, and so forth. Until then, you can tell yourself whatever you want, but stop being a dick to everyone who is justifiably being a bit pragmatic by news that sounds way too good to be true ("you mean candy makes you thinner and whitens your teeth and supermodels say they're most attracted to middle aged nerds? wow!")
- Smokeythebandit, on 06/06/2009, -0/+6Conclusion: Initially beer is better at hydration, it is more isotonic due to dilution with additives. (sugar, salts etc.)
HOWEVER, alcohol is a diuretic which means long term it is much worse than water at hydrating. Something I am experiencing this morning. Easy - AlyxVance, on 06/06/2009, -1/+7I'm calling ***** on this one.
- Ravatar, on 06/06/2009, -0/+6Speaking of half-knowledge, consider for a moment that there are a variety of beers with different alcohol content, from the average of about 4% all the way to 20%.
I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't compare the water and beer to any sports drinks. - Bombfrog, on 06/06/2009, -2/+7I've tasted American beer. It tastes more like water than some water I've drunk.
- LloydBentsen, on 06/06/2009, -0/+5because you haven't had a beer this morning.
- Kronos6948, on 06/06/2009, -0/+5Amen. The only American beers I usually drink are microbrews. If I have to go cheap, I go Yuengling.
- cornstarch5, on 06/06/2009, -0/+5Gee, it's one thing to disagree with a person... but, do you have to be so condescending? Why call someone a jerk for stating their thoughts in a clear, polite manner?
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 06/06/2009, -1/+6Whatever man. This is *****. I drink lots of beer. When I stop drinkjng beer I get really ***** thirsty. When I dont drink beer, I don't get thirtsy.
- NUMBER4940, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4I was hoping I wasn't alone in at least being skeptic of these findings and methods.
- TheBigBad, on 06/06/2009, -1/+5You need strong tasting beer to wash the taste of British food out of your mouth.
- NUMBER4940, on 06/06/2009, -0/+430 grams over the course of what period of time? 24 hours?
Contrast that to 15 grams in 1 hour (for simplicity). - brownsound00, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4as a kinesiology major in university, I can defend this explanation.
- kokoshka, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4I had six beers last night, why am I so ***** thirsty?
- ZestyNinja, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4I love beer and I would really love to believe this. However, tomorrow, I am going to be wishing I drank more water and not beer.
- mrgreenjeans, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4It's got what plants crave.
- brownsound00, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3Osmosis bitch! It's beautiful.
- atarijedi, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3Too bad alcohol is a diuretic, which makes you expel fluids.
- forestballa, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3I dont always stay hyrdrated,
but when I do
I drink beer. - hobbler, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3I somehow doubt Nancy up there is drinking 50-60oz, if she's whining about pissing every 15 minutes.
Maybe she's pregnant? - Ravatar, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3While you're correct, as a doctor noted on another article about this research, they recommend only 500ml of beer (4% ABV?), which would have little to no diuretic effect. Then again, I've never known someone to drink only 500ml of beer :)
- funklor, on 06/06/2009, -2/+5Farnsworth only says "good news" when it's horrible news. :-P
- matthewkg, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3Not True.
- Ravatar, on 06/06/2009, -0/+3Depends on how fast he's drinking. 50-60oz of beer per hour has to go somewhere.
- smcgrath, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2This seems to hit this right on the head:

If you notice we're about half way through the cycle. You'll know the cycle is complete when we see drunk college students start to claim they are healthier than their non-drinking peers because they are better hydrated. - Enlyth, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2Dehydration doesn't cause hangovers, acetaldehyde does.
- LAMinator, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2it's got electrolytes!
- xR0e, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2That's some cool stuff, sir(s)!
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2You should just be ashamed of drinking that crappy beer. GO GUINNESS!
- mysticalone, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2That's high quality H2O.
- BDOUG, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2I wondered how hard working sailors used to get by on so much rum and beer without dehydrating. Water didn't store well at sea so they drank a lot of spirits back in the day.
- PxCxG, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2Hmmm... that doesn't speak too well about british tap water, now does it?
- kingofthisnight, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2Dugg for the picture of Negra Modelo
- maz2331, on 06/06/2009, -0/+2All American beer is not Coors Light and Budweiser.
