I have been a Registered Dietitian for 30 years and the three pillars of good nutrition have not changed - planning, variety and moderation. High fructose corn syrup has so much attention now I feel due to the confusion of what it really is. High fructose corn syrup is NOT fructose. Scientists continue to confirm that high fructose corn syrup is no different than other sweeteners. I base my facts on science and when the December 2008 ed of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that leading former critics of HFCS reached a concensus it is indistinguishable from table sugar in its metabolic effects and it can not be linked to obesity any more or less than other caloric sweeteners; I believe it goes back to the pillars of good health...planning, variety and moderation! - foodessentials, on 03/26/2009, -0/+0Good Points. However, technically speaking, I would presume that in soft drinks they would be using HFCS 90 as it is sweeter than normal sugar. For instance most of the lowest calorie cranberry juices also contain HFCS (see the link below)
This would mean that even though sugar and HFCS contain 4 calories per gram, they would need to use more grams of sugar to get the same sweetness. Therefore, the effect of dropping hfcs and promoting sugar may lead to consumption of more calories.
I'm not a dietitian and I think you're both right, a balanced healthy diet exercising moderation is the best way forward.

As a dietitian, communicating the science of nutrition to empower people with the tools and information to make healthy choices has never been more important. It is critical that the information be both evidence-based and easy to understand and apply to daily living. Currently, misinformation about high fructose corn syrup abounds on the Internet which portrays it as the evil sweetener that is making everyone fat. In making smart decisions, it’s important to know that sugar and corn syrup are equally sweet and both contain four calories per gram.

Replacing high fructose corn syrup with sugar won't make a bit of difference in one's diet since they are both have glucose and half fructose and are digested, absorbed and metabolized the same way. The body has no idea of the original source. The more important message people need to hear is getting a balanced diet with a variety of foods: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, low fat dairy products and healthy fats which leaves room for some sweet treats no matter if they are sweetened with HFCS, sugar or honey. Balance, variety and moderation are the keys to healthy eating!
