- Natru3al, on 06/21/2009, -0/+37With a diet coke.
- badqat, on 06/21/2009, -9/+40mmm...stick of butter.
I'll take mine deep fried, please. - inactive, on 06/21/2009, -5/+35"According to health experts, you're better off eating a stick of butter."
Yes but a stick of butter is nowhere as fun or tasty.
Although badqat's idea of deep-frying a stick of butter is intriguing.... - jull1234, on 06/21/2009, -2/+25is this really news to anyone at this point?
- mikemehak, on 06/22/2009, -8/+31I had a triple whopper with cheese the other day with a super/king size fries. Then I had an apple turnover for desert.
It was delicious and worth every calorie. - asgardshill, on 06/21/2009, -7/+29Wrap that stick of butter in bacon and I'm in. We shall call it "Lechería Mignon".
- Resiroth, on 06/22/2009, -2/+22Yeah, it's pretty obvious fast food is bad, but after I read the labels on some of the fast food I ate, I actually stopped eating there. Costco is a good example. I used to have a slice of cheeze pizza, and yes I assumed it was bad for me. I decided to check the nutritional data out online and I predicted that it would be something insane like 60% daily saturated fat. It was 102%. I frequently see people eating 2 costco slices. Calorie counting is a bit stupid, and not really accurate. Is 600 calories of Fruit just as bad as 600 calories of French Fries? Hell no. Calories aren't bad, excessive saturated fat is.
This can't really compare to cigarettes because while everyone knows they're bad for you, they are pretty uniform in the amount of damage per cigarette. Imagine if it was discovered that one cigarette gave you cancer 4x as fast as a normal one. People may assume things are bad but they do not know just how bad some of this stuff is. - zagatbuzz, on 06/21/2009, -1/+18Is this expected to create a decrease in the amount of people who order these calorie crazy meals? On the other hand, do cigarette warnings really stop that many people from smoking?
- bdfariello, on 06/21/2009, -6/+21"(The fried macaroni and cheese at the Cheesecake Factory has a staggering 69 grams of saturated fat--more than you should eat in 3½ days.)"
I'm intrigued. If it comes with bacon, I'd be up for the 45 mile drive to the closest one, so long as someone else is driving back. I don't think I'd want to move for a few days after eating that... - MasterChi, on 06/22/2009, -0/+11http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/paul ...
Theres the recipe for your deep fried butter :) - bobartig, on 06/22/2009, -1/+10Stupid kids these days and their triple woppers. Back in my day, the Double Wopper with cheese was still new. That sucker has something like 860 calories. With fries and a drink, it clocks in somewhere near 1500, but its nothing like the burger 'arms race' that exists between Carl's Jr, Wendy's, and Burger King these days.
- Jambi, on 06/21/2009, -0/+9I'm guessing you're from Scotland?
- Macintoshreader, on 06/22/2009, -2/+11You're ***** disgusting.
- tommyjohn19, on 06/22/2009, -0/+8Eat around the banana, Dad. It's just empty vitamins.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -2/+9Oh, fried mac & cheese with bacon bits throughout.... now we're talking....
- consonance, on 06/22/2009, -1/+7This isn't solely about fast food. This is about big chain restaurants in general. Unlike you, I care about what I eat so I can stay healthy.
- NHbeacon, on 06/21/2009, -5/+11Can I supersize that stick of butter?
- sciencelovesyou, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5"Please President Obama, I can't eat any more pizza!"
"YOU'LL EAT WHAT I TELL YOU TO EAT, IN THE QUANTITIES I TELL YOU TO EAT, OR NO HEALTH CARE FOR YOU!" - wtrwlkr, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5I went into BK yesterday (first time in 5 months) because my friend wanted to eat something quick and cheap, and I noticed they put up signs on the counter advertising how to "eat healthy" at BK. One of them said that if you order your double whopper without mayo, you're eating 20% less calories than if you order it with mayo. Sorry, but if your objective is to have a healthy meal, you should bypass BK altogether.
- Resiroth, on 06/22/2009, -2/+7Eating too many calories does not caused heart attacks. Eating too many calories does not cause livers to fail. Eating too many calories does not cause heart disease... Many of the symptoms associated with obesity are related to the patient's diet being unhealthy. Changing how often you eat and what you eat while maintaining the same calories would allow you to lose weight over pure calorie counting. Try losing weight by eating a pizza a night and starving during the day. Heck I bet it's only 1800 calories! never mind the saturated/trans fat/sodium which is what you should be watching out for.
I'd like to see the health of a 2200 calorie a day person who eats whole grains/healthy food and a 2000 calorie a day person who eats junk food. It would be nice if there was one aspect which determined the health level of a food but this is not the case.
Just because a 500 calorie slice of pizza and a 500 calorie egg white omelet have the same amount of calories, does not mean that both will increase your risk of heart disease or increase your weight by the same amount. - MacEnvy, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5Oh Paula Deen. How that woman is still alive is beyond me.
- Tarkaan, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5Look at the amount of sugar in everything McD's and BK sell. Whataburger doesn't taste like that. I ate McD's while I was working in the airport, ordered a hanburger and a cheeseburger and a small fry... ate half the cheeseburger and gave the rest to my boss. I just couldn't eat the sugar!
- ontain, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4have you been to the Cheesecake factory? hardly fast.
- gantz9x, on 06/22/2009, -6/+10This is news? What's next , smoking has harmful effects?
- bobcrotch, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4I agree with you. Most people who are going to ignore warnings and information will continue.
That isn't to say there are people who could be educated. Some people I think with fast food don't realize how many calories they're consuming. - Tarkaan, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4Why don't you just eat a piece of chicken and a salad?
- lostformat1125, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5This article reminds me of a simpsons episode where homer wraps a stick of butter with a waffle...it looks good as hell but I ain't crazy enough to try it
- PaulClayberg, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4In other news, shooting yourself is dangerous.
- trespasser28, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4Good, if people want to eat themselves to death thats their problem, not the taxpayers who would have to foot the enormous and continuous health bills for it. If you keep healthy you should get free health care. If you eat the ridiculous food in the article then you are going to have health problems and should therefore pay for it.
- novemberdream07, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4living in nyc to me initially the calorie count is shocking and after a while you honestly get desensitized. working at a famous coffee chain our pastry sales dipped when we got the calorie count and then went back up again after a while. also i noticed our portion sizes magically got smaller when we got the calorie count.
- ghatid, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5I eat fast food, but I always add extra veggies! For example, today I had 2 chicken sandwiches from Jack in the Box with extra lettuce and tomatoes (what a deal! $2).
I lie to myself to make me feel better:P - consonance, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4An omelette at IHOP has over 1000 calories. Every single one. Did you know that? Did you even suspect it? I'm not saying that because I'm telling you to not eat it. I really like to know things like that every time I go to a chain restaurant. You might be surprised about the calories stuffed into many foods. Some restaurants don't even publish their nutrition facts. That's why I want to know. If you don't even know what's in the food, how can you make an informed decision about it?
- ZenFu, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3@duggtodeath
ACTUALLY...there ARE people that calorie count, and having nutrition info on food items IS useful to them.
E.G. my metabolism is so ***** high that anything less than 3000 calories results in me losing weight. Fast food's a quick and cheap way to boost my cal intake, so whenever i go to mcDonalds, i usually end up getting like 4 hamburgers, fries and a shake. Without the nutritional information, i wouldn't be able to accurately work out just how many burgers i'd need to buy-etc
Not everyone's a fat diet-slimfast eating *****. Nutritional information helps BOTH sides of the line. - khaosx2030, on 06/22/2009, -1/+4Apparently it's impossible to emphasize enough that fast food isn't meant for daily consumption.
Sure it's unhealthy as hell, but once every month (assuming you exercise at all) won't kill you. - sciencelovesyou, on 06/22/2009, -1/+4I just wanted to let you know that I'm printing your comment on a t-shirt. It has changed my life forever.
- theandy1, on 06/22/2009, -2/+5I do love these health nut pieces. However, I don't think the writers realize that they're just showing me what to try next.
- Rivfader, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3Only fast food I refuse to give up is taco bell. Mmm so good. Cheesey gordita crunch
- charlie55, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2new york already has this. it is useful for me as a consumer, but at the same time i do not like forcing the businesses to do anything.
at any rate, it is pretty easy to incorporate the occasional triple whopper into a healthy diet. i dont see people complaining about the mom and pop bakery that serves incredible cakes and donuts with similar calorie counts. for some reason we appear to be more eager to admit that you are not supposed to eat there every day. - fornnwet, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I live in Seattle, where we have had calorie information on menus for a short while now. I'm a big fan, and really believe that "knowledge is power" in these cases.
What I can say is that no, this won't deter me from making a choice I know is unhealthy (but cheap and/or fast), but it absolutely does steer the decisions I make once I am there. I now find myself more inclined to get that $1.29 chicken wrap for 420 calories instead of the $0.99 burger at 650. One of the "biggest" adjustments I've begun to make is opting for the tacos at Jack in the Box (under 400 cals for 2) instead of one of their 600-700 calorie burgers.
Some things that people may think are great for you, such as getting a side salad instead of fries or a baked potato with your meal, they're going to be surprised to find out aren't any better (caesar dressing and liberal doses of cheese can make the salad worse than the starchy sides).
Most people have the basic information, but few have all of it. Posted calorie counts feel like they've gone a long way towards providing this info, and empower the consumer to make their own "eat this, not that" decisions. - talkingwires, on 06/22/2009, -1/+3"If public-health advocates, and now the Senate, get their way, when you look at a menu from a chain restaurant, those calorie counts will be staring you down."
Well, it looks like we're one step closer to The Forever War, where food was rationed by the amount of calories it contained. But after the food shortages started to ease up in that novel, they couldn't charge the same price for a steak as a sack of rice, so the Calorie became the new universal monetary system.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Forever_War - slashdotordigg, on 06/22/2009, -1/+3Seriously a stick of butter? whoppers? phewwwww!!
the chicago style hamburger grill place close to mine has 2 cheeseburger & fries combo for $6. BK, wendy's, macdonalds all suck. If you are going to spend more than $3 over there, just get a real burger elsewhere instead.
and seriously, are you arguing calories while you are indeed sitting in front of the computer, probably sipping on a 800 calorie Cafe Mocha? Jeez man! I eat my yogurt and fruits but when i eat my burger, all i care is thick & juicy grilled meat pattie and the 2 freaking slices of american cheese, nothing else!!
oh and do your damn exercises! just go to the gym and workout hard. I had it with these calorie nazis. They are the ones who gave up on exercising and dieting. - b0rg123, on 06/22/2009, -3/+5have they thought maybe ppl eat fast food/bad food ect becuase it tastes so damn good? ***** all the fat ect... iam going to eat what i want to eat... and if your dieting u shoudlnt be in a fastfood resturant anyway,
- egofreak, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2now if only you could eat one and then never have to eat all week, world hunger take THAT!
- s0nicfreak, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2What? It already is. It's just that some people don't understand that spending $5 on one meal is more expensive than spending $20 on the stuff to make 6 meals.
- PeterFile, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2No chicken? Or are you just out of chicken?
- wowza194234, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Heh I guess you do not know what I've had slide down my throat then.
- MuadDave, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1Butter contains a great deal of water, so deep-frying a stick of butter would likely lead to screaming hot oil and butter all over the kitchen and the cook.
Not that I know from experience or anything... - Elranzer, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Mmmm.... sacrilicious
- SethSalozar, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Crap I guess its time for me to stop eating fast food for every meal of the day. It's just way too damn good, I mean go to Burger King and order that triple cheese whopper and tell me it is not one of the godliest things to ever slide down your throat.
