- Insightful, on 01/29/2009, -6/+77Regulations - who needs it? Industry can regulate themselves. Let capitalism and market correct themselves. And if you should disagree with that, you must be a Socialist!
/s - michaelhood, on 01/28/2009, -0/+69I had apparently been in a cave the past few weeks not watching the news. Last Friday I was enjoying some of those peanut butter & cheese crackers when the evening news came on, and showed them (same brand, too) as an example of contaminated PB.
I'm still alive, for now.. - jerstud56, on 01/30/2009, -1/+60So the Sams club calls me the other day to imform me to throw away the peanut butter crackers I bought the week before (they knew I did considering I used my check card) and I already did so I decided to mess with her.
I acted like I had a bunch of food in my mouth and said:
"Why would I throw them out? They are so good I have been ea...om nom...ting the box all day long I can't quit they're delicious."
The lady freaked out and said "SIR PLEASE SPIT IT OUT RIGHT NOW THEY MIGHT BE CONTAMINATED WITH SALMONELLA."
and I just continued to chew like I was just munching away on those things and she was almost in tears...one of the funniest days of my life, besides the day I ate mushrooms - but that's an entirely different story, and world. - JoeParanoid, on 01/29/2009, -9/+42This is how corruption and cronyism under the Bush Administration has undermined federal agency oversight. We need to get back to hiring professionals who do their jobs or we could end up like China.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+32When I'm hungry, you would be amazed at how much water I eat.
- atb12688, on 01/28/2009, -0/+25Thank god I haven't had those peanut butter crackers in years. I used to eat those like water when I was younger :-)
- zeth006, on 01/30/2009, -0/+23Dugg for giving me a good laugh but man...that's mean.
- mikbunn, on 01/29/2009, -0/+23GOD I WISH I COULD BE LIKE YOU, YOU MAGNIFICENT ORGANIC BASTARD.
- Batfishy, on 01/29/2009, -3/+23Hi oldhick,
It's probably got a lot to do with the lack of funding for many of our federal agencies over the past few years. I'm just guessing here, but I can say that many federal agencies have been defunded and ignored for so long that there is some real and palpable apathy within them now.
I worked for a biotech company for the first 7 years of this decade, and dealt personally with the FDA on many occasions. They're really behind. - pintomp3, on 01/30/2009, -1/+21Who needs regulation? The magical hand of the free market will do the safety and health inspections.
- brandita, on 01/30/2009, -0/+16Did you immediately spit them out or did you just keep on chewing?
- offrdbandit, on 01/30/2009, -2/+17Every day I consume red meat, frozen and processed foods, homogenized and artificially fortified dairy products, artificial food products, soft drinks, and processed and reformed meats. I am currently happier than anyone who eats vegetables, cottage cheese, and tofu has the potential to be.
- oldhick, on 01/29/2009, -5/+20Can you explain in much greater detail exactly how the Bush Administration is implicated in this. Can your cite the specific examples of cronyism and corruption related to this incident for us. Thanks. I look forward to your response. The article left out those details and I can't find much on it via Google. Your sources would be very valuable. Thanks!
- ProfessorLX, on 01/30/2009, -0/+14thats an easy one, obviously he finished the pack, i mean if you're halfway into it, you've definitely got salmonella if you're gunna get it, may as well enjoy the rest of your crackers n cheese/peanut butter.
- redcolumbine, on 01/29/2009, -0/+13Well, but one of these days you'll discover dun dun noodles - which is indeed a pasta dish - and the fact that it can be made with CRUNCHY PEANUT BUTTER. Then, you're DOOMED!
- positron, on 01/30/2009, -0/+12There is no butter in peanut butter.
- Chongo, on 01/30/2009, -0/+11you should of said "Salmon? nahhh, these are peanut butter... what are you talking about?"
- mikbunn, on 01/29/2009, -0/+11It's already banned at many schools, in case another student has peanut allergies.
- haikuFU, on 01/30/2009, -1/+10Prayers don't do anything.
- BradBrown, on 01/30/2009, -0/+9Dibs on your kidneys.
- spriggig, on 01/30/2009, -0/+9I wonder if the FDA is hiring? Seems like they could use some help with their inspection duties.
- pinkpackrat, on 01/29/2009, -1/+10so much for pb&j for lunch:-)
- publiclurker, on 01/30/2009, -0/+8The jarred peanut butter from companies like Jiff, Adams, etc. are OK. This company only sold to institutions and other manufacturers.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+8I hate that crunchy water, it makes my mouth so cold when I eat it.
- Ellipsys, on 01/30/2009, -3/+10Its not just the Bush administration, but an entire corporate-centric, profit-at-any-cost driven facet of society, and the symptoms of a larger problem. There are many, many examples of how corporations have attempted to buy off oversight agencies, or simply act with impunity as they have enough money to make problems go away. With no one to hold them accountable that can't be bought, coerced, or otherwise controlled, corporations in this country hold a huge amount of power. Google at your leisure, but I'll give you one free note - Just this past october the attorney general of Massachusetts (or was it Connecticut) ruled that there was a huge conflict of interest between the Infectious Disease Society of America and the pharm company that produced Lymerix, the failed and utterly devastating Lyme Disease vaccine, that ended up giving a similar affliction to those who were inoculated. See, Lyme tests are less than 10% accurate. Why? Because the IDSA doctors at the time were paid off to ensure that people vaccinated with Lymerix didn't come up positive on lyme tests (on the bands of the Western Blot that Lymerix activated, including those most indicative of real infection), as that would look bad for the company! So, we have thousands of sick people not able to be diagnosed, because a company managed to pay off a regulatory body (admittedly, not directly govt' controlled) to make them look better.
- jynweythek, on 01/30/2009, -0/+7now can you tell us the story about the day you ate mushrooms? :)
- NateTheApe21, on 01/30/2009, -0/+7i blame jimmy carter, for no good reason at all
- darkmagician777, on 01/30/2009, -0/+7How come the FDA didnt go in sooner if mold and roaches had time to infest the place. What happen to OSHA - who is working here and why did none of them call the local health department for infecting people.
FIRE ALL OF THEM. SHUT DOWN THE PLANT!
It wouldnt hurt them to ban people from working in plans who have a known reputation of letting things slide when it comes to health and safety - yurishoujo, on 01/30/2009, -0/+6This is reprehensible, three people in my town have died from these outbreaks. I would love to see a totally free market, but companies time and time again pull ***** like this that shows they can't handle the responsibility that comes with a free market. Good job, asshats.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+6You have to stir it up once, and refrigerate it. Real peanut butter has ONLY peanuts, and sometimes salt. Jif and Skippy is not peanut butter any more than Aunt Jemima's is maple syrup. It's high fructose corn syrup, with a "breakfast syrup label.
- UnarmedHippo, on 01/30/2009, -1/+7WTF THAT IS *****
kids can't even bring pb&j for lunch anymore? - SEN5241, on 01/30/2009, -1/+7Mmmmmm . . . peanut butter.
- zeth006, on 01/30/2009, -0/+6If you didn't catch the sarcasm...you've been living in a cave.
'nuf said. - inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+6*goes back in time, kidnaps George Washington Carver*
- combatchuck, on 01/30/2009, -5/+11THE BAD PEANUTS ARE NOT GEORGE BUSH'S FAULT YOU ***** MORON.
- chanop, on 01/30/2009, -0/+6All this peanut butter stuff has me really nervous. I don't want my dog to get sick from salmonella.
- Mohdoo, on 01/30/2009, -2/+8And to think Republicans say that businesses need LESS oversight...
- Metasquares, on 01/30/2009, -0/+6Don't you mean Georgia?
- mikbunn, on 01/30/2009, -1/+6It's the pussification of America. I'm pretty sure they're about to ban desks in favor of floor pillows because desks are too hard, and math is up on the chopping block because one student said "this makes my brain hurt."
- ctnp, on 01/30/2009, -0/+5Dude, Georgia. C'mon, pay attention.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+5Look at the ingredients of Skippy or Jif. It barely passes for peanut butter.
- unknownpoltroon, on 01/30/2009, -1/+6Look for the quality "MADE IN CHINA" label to be safe!!
/Were ***** doomed. - elrac, on 01/30/2009, -0/+5I thought Larry the Cable Guy was now a war correspondent in Israel.
- alittleroy101, on 01/30/2009, -1/+6That was a joke. But you were very nice in how you pointed it out, I would have been really rude and sarcastic about it.
- combatchuck, on 01/30/2009, -0/+5Regulating quality for reasons of safety doesn't interfere with a free market. It also falls under the job description given to the government by the constitution.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -3/+8Doubtful
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+4I chuckled, just a little bit, but then i buried you.
