- crtjer, on 10/20/2009, -0/+6Alright for the not so baking inclined I give a simple recipe for beer bread.
Ingredients
3 cups self-rising flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 12oz bottle of beer actually to be safe take 2, one to drink.
2 tablespoons melted butter (used for brushing on after cooking)
375 degrees for 55 minutes.
I found this recipe online and honestly it couldn't be any more straightforward. - mkriss5681, on 10/21/2009, -0/+6Baltimore Beer Shrimp:
A cheap 6 pack (preferably Natty Bo), some vinegar, Old Bay, hot sauce, whole garlic, whole onion, and 2 pounds of shrimp. - alanocu, on 10/20/2009, -0/+6Personally, I like beer in my belly. :-)

- Cerin, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2If everything's better than beer, then beer is better with beer. Which means the best thing to go with beer is an infinite amount of beer.

mmmmmmm... bacon... - altgeeky1, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2One of the BEST benefits of hombrewing is always having 20L kegs ready for consumption... in the half-height, wheeled kegerator. mmmm fresh wet-hopped pale ales... =-D
Doesn't hurt that it costs half as much to make as buy in the store, and you can go with all-organic ingredients if you choose. - altgeeky1, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2How much trouble is which part - homebrewing or kegging?
They're both pretty easy, although you want to do either using a checklist so you don't miss a step..
Assuming you just meant homebrewing (not also kegging), there's a lot of shortcuts you can take which save time and don't necessarily kill quality.
The biggest shortcuts are:
1) Using 'malt extract' with steeping grains.
This shaves at least 90 minutes and a complicated step off your list, because the process of "mashing" all grain to make your own "extract" has been done for you. Ready made malt extract is available as syrup (LME) or dry powder (DME). Both have their strengths but when starting out there's no difference.
2) concentrated boils:
Instead of boiling 5 gallons at once - and then figuring out a way to cool it quickly - you boil just 2 gallons with the malt extract and the water and hops per your recipe notes. Using a concentrated boil lets you get by with a much smaller stockpot also.
When done cooking (1 hour), put the pot into a sink of water or icewater and it ("wort", the unprocessed beer) will rapidly cool.
While that's going on, add 3.5 gallons of cool water to your plastic bucket. When the pot isn't getting any cooler (just barely warm) at 70-90 degrees F, gently pour the wort onto the cool water - it should mix and the wort is now cool at between 60F and 70F.
At that point just sprinkle the dry yeast packet onto the top of the cooled wort, close up your buckets (it should have an "airlock" to let CO2 vent, without letting bugs or airborne contaminants in). You can open the lid to peek, but if the airlock is "burping", you'll have fermented (flat) beer in 7 days. You need to test to be sure it really IS done fermenting, then you can bottle using siphon tubing and a good pinch of sugar in each bottle.
You have to clean, THEN sanitize everything that comes into contact with the cooled wort (buckets, hoses), and before bottling, your bottles and caps too. You CAN use bleach to sanitize but only if you follow online instructions and let the stuff air dry. Bleach is nasty - don't use it unless you're pinching pennies. I clean with powdered oxygen cleaner (unscented!), and sanitize with iodine sanitizer and both of these are safe (I don't wear gloves and my skin is fine).
(Fellow homebrewers: be gentle on me... I'm cutting a lot of small details out to keep the checklist short. I'm assuming he'll go to http://www.howtobrew.com/ and review section 1 and 2 of the online book).
Your BEST bet is to locate a homebrew club for your nearest city, and you'll meet great folks, learn, and everyone shares information (and sometimes equipment). Every homebrewer tends to prefer having a brewing partner to help with setup and cleaning, so you can get started without spending a dime on equipment, and just splitting the cost of ingredients.
warm, (only add some of the water up front), which - askantik, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2wtf are you talking about, progh?
Besides, much research has shown that because beer is so low in sodium and is mostly water, it can be healthy and hydrating, especially with exercise. - tugger, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2utter utter utter.... *****.
- johndavidjack, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2You're probably one of the ones that require beer... ;-)
- albdimension, on 11/26/2009, -0/+1I agree, beer makes our life a better one... :P
http://www.albdimension.com/beer-is-the-reason-i-w ... - crtjer, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1Alton Brown just did an episode of Good Eats with beer and wine cooking and actually explained some cooking that goes good with beer. Brownies being one of them.
- askantik, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1How much trouble is it? I've looked into a little online, but there's so much info that it's a little overwhelming.
- Cander, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1Beer gets such a bad rap. It gets treated as redneck swill while wine is treated as the nectar of the gods. What many do not realize is that beer can be just as complex and classy as wine. In some cases, more so than wine. So it is no surprise beer can be used for cooking like wine
- askantik, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1Ok, I was gonna call shenanigans because NPR just produced a "cooking with beer" article on the 14th. Then I realized that this article from the Baltimore sun is dated 1999. Wtf. Well, for anyone interested, here's the article from NPR:

I am thinking of making Seitan Carbonade based on that recipe... - johndavidjack, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1Guilty as charged.
- Kingal, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1"Beer: the cause and solution to all of life's problems."
- crtjer, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1First of all aspartame is not in beer. Beer has water, barely, and hops for the most part. Their is no beer that has it. Second Guinness actually is the healthiest beer for your right now and has protein in it.
- iPoul, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1Beer and Bacon, mmm...
