- jayjay80, on 09/07/2008, -52/+117Animals eat veggies, I eat animals. I'm not about to start cutting in line.
- showyoudawei, on 09/08/2008, -15/+71You know, I like eating meat as much as the next guy, but given how many global warming stories I've read here, it is pretty hypocritical that the majority of Diggers plain reject this idea simply because it means, GASP, they'd have to sacrifice something. Nice to know Digger's are environmentalists only when it's convenient.
Eating meat increases your carbon footprint. Deal with it. - lucy22, on 09/07/2008, -19/+61If we all just ate veggies, it would probably be healthier for us anyway.
All the scientific research nowdays says to eat less meat. - badtzmartin, on 09/07/2008, -48/+87Sorry. Sun comes up, goes down. Climate will change. I will continue to eat meat.
- Oxygen, on 09/07/2008, -43/+80For every animal you don't eat, I'll eat 3.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -42/+76brb cooking a steak
- omjeremy, on 09/08/2008, -19/+52Seriously folks, the guy is right. Eating less meat is really better for the environment.
- MalarkeyPN, on 09/08/2008, -3/+35Imagine you have grown enough corn to feed 100 people. Which is more efficient?
a) feed 100 people, or
b) feed the corn to a cow so the meat from the cow can feed 10 people.
It really is as simple as that ... If you start with X amount of corn, it's more efficient to bypass the cow. - MalarkeyPN, on 09/08/2008, -17/+47Too bad nobody seems to take this article seriously. Meat is bad for the environment. Accept that fact.
One good alternative is to eat bugs: http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/humannature/archi ...
Mmmm....... - redcolumbine, on 09/07/2008, -14/+44Self-indulgent whining aside, it's not just about cow farts. It's about protein inefficiency. Cutting back on meat really takes a bite out of your carbon footprint.
- dougrochford, on 09/08/2008, -13/+41I haven't had any meat since the beginning of this year. I don't eat fish or raw eggs either.
I feel really good and I am healthy. Try various beans, good brown rice, corn, tortilllas, jalepenos, and pepper to start you off with an amazing meal. - Iztikeit, on 09/08/2008, -6/+28Get a better diet? The food is not the problem.
- efeghali, on 09/08/2008, -11/+31this comment thread is depressing - a solution to climate change will likely require some sort of sacrifice and/or intense amounts of human suffering.
whatever you think about vegans/vegetarians, meat eaters no longer eat their steaks to survive, they eat them because of the taste. how many hurricanes will be needed before people put the future of their land and their offspring ahead of their taste pallets... - hardwarehank, on 09/07/2008, -15/+35PETA pointed out the same thing a while back. You know what else emits a lot of CO2? Humans. How about we do some China-esque population control! Who's up for not having kids?
- aresef, on 09/08/2008, -17/+37Going vegetarian is one of the most efficient things to do to help the environment and one of the smartest things to do for your health. And the food tastes better too.
- GabingtoN, on 09/08/2008, -1/+20Dice, I'm a vegetarian, and I have to say that you're the stereotypical self-righteous vegetarian that makes people thing we're all like that and they end up resenting us.
You're not helping anyone by insulting people that eat meat.
Personally, I don't ***** care what anyone else eats, as long as they don't push it on me, just like I don't push vegetarianism on anyone else. - BrettFromTibet, on 09/08/2008, -6/+22I have been vegetarian for over 12 years and I never go hungry or lack in delicious food choices. I completely understand and respect that some people enjoy eating meat.. just like I understand that some people drink coffee or beer... or like to smoke cigarettes or weed... but let's stick with the facts and think about the times:
Science has repeatedly shown that it takes a lot more resources (like water) and burns a lot more carbon to feed, produce, refrigerate, cook meat....! It's a high-energy, high-carbon CHOICE. Just like some people here in Colorado choose to eat fish sushi daily - flown in on jet fuel and dregged out of the ocean by huge diesel trawler boats. It's an extremely high-carbon, high impact food choice.
Be conscious. Be scientific. Be open to evolution. Don't be more closed-minded and conservative than a Bible belt stickler.
. - inactive, on 09/08/2008, -8/+24You know what goes good with books?
Chicken wings. - jaromdl, on 09/07/2008, -4/+20Well, you have about 3 years of catching up to do.
Assuming the average human eats about 204 pounds of meat a year, you would have to triple that. That's 612*3 years which is 1,836 pounds or 5.15 pounds per day for the next year to catch up plus an additional 1.71 pounds a day to keep up. That totals to be 6.87 pounds a day, or ~3,116 grams. That is about 8,070 calories a day of meat. This doesn't include any other food or beverage.
To burn that many calories a day, you would have to run 68.1 miles a day for the next year, and an additional 22.9 to keep up after that. If you don't run, your chances of being able to keep up with me before you die of colon cancer or heart disease are significantly low.
I wouldn't recommend it for health reasons but, if you want to try I won't stop you. - digggggggggg, on 09/08/2008, -4/+20Well, the only exercise that I do is wank. Now scientists are telling me to exercise more. So what am I supposed to do, have a wank day? Can you imagine that pile of rags?
In all seriousness tho, you should probably rethink your diet. - mushoo, on 09/08/2008, -3/+18And start chewing your food better.
- BertEatsDirt, on 09/08/2008, -1/+151. Vegetarians don't just eat veggies. I'm a vego and I eat burgers, pizza, pasta, sandwiches, breakfast cereals, curries etc.
2. You can be perfectly healthy on a vegetarian diet. Take a look at this quote from the American Dietetics Association:
It is the position of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada that appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.
3. People get so crazy when you talk about not eating meat! It's like you're asking them to stop breathing oxygen or something. I challenge any naysayer here to do a bit of research on vegetarian meals & go without meat for a week. $10 says you'll be fine. - joshuajudd, on 09/08/2008, -0/+12Omnivores, actually. There is a huge difference.
Carnivores literally cannot live without a diet primarily of meat.
On the other hand, omnivores cannot live WITH a diet primarily of meat.
It isn't a coincidence that the nation with the highest rates of heart disease (the US) is also the nation that consumes the highest amounts of red meat.
If we don't begin to remember that we're omnivores, not carnivores, we'll die out. - turbodork, on 09/08/2008, -4/+15I like how everyone here posting how "this is a scam" or "I ain't never gonna stop eatin' my Big Macs" will one day be blathering the same delusional lines to their doctors in 15-20 years when he tells them to cut down on meat and increase their veggie intake to reduce their blood pressure/diabetes/kidney/liver/heart disease problems. Don't ever change guys. Even when there's plenty of evidence that proves its in your best interest to do so.
- ulmedas, on 09/08/2008, -2/+13Hehe, Utter.
But seriously, he didn't say stop eating beef. He suggested taking a day off of eating meat. If you think that dramatic man made climate change is a scientific conspiracy like evolution, then just ignore him. Otherwise, his advice is reasonable. - Exzhaton, on 09/07/2008, -31/+42The only veggie I eat is corn, so what am I supposed to do, have Corn Day? Can you imagine that bowel movment?
- GlassAgate, on 09/08/2008, -1/+11Are you referring to the "feed 10 pounds of feed to a cow to get
1 pound of meat" argument? I don't know the exact numbers,
but that's about what it is. - itignition, on 09/08/2008, -2/+12I cut my meat intake down dramatically and I'm feeling great!
- FLMarijuana, on 09/08/2008, -0/+10Have fun dying of a heart attack when your 40
- Roger, on 09/08/2008, -3/+13Keep in mind the average digger is probably 12.
- ulmedas, on 09/08/2008, -2/+12Well, Cattle are very inefficient, so it takes a tremendous amount of materials to fatten them up. There are plenty of other reasons not to eat industrially farmed cattle, but that's not the point here. Also, moving cattle by the ton is much more expensive, as they don't pack as densely as corn or soy beans or rice.
The most efficient of commonly farmed animals in terms of edible mass / intake is chick (well...probably fowl in general, but chicken in the most common.) but they are still not as efficient as eating the raw materials straight. - mediumofmeaning, on 09/08/2009, -6/+16very manure response.
i'm actually vegan but i had to say it anyway. - Poovey, on 09/08/2008, -3/+12It's called "Global Communism"
- Visual77, on 09/08/2008, -1/+10Holy *****. Get over yourself. Get off the moral high horse and learn to accept the decisions of other human beings.
As a life long vegetarian, one thing I've noticed is the inverse correlation between how big of a pretentious douche a vegetarian is and how long they've been without meat.
You can go on your crusade about how everything you do is righteous, but go another few decades and you'll calm down.
Ass. - mediumofmeaning, on 09/08/2009, -6/+15well said.
- noctu, on 09/08/2008, -5/+13I love meat but I take a 2-3 day break from it a week and do red meat in small amounts because I don't want to get old and get stuck drinking fiber laxatives or wearing depends because of a sagging colon.
- russ3, on 09/08/2008, -2/+10Theyd be dead already if i wasnt planning to eat them
- RedDrgn, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9I grew up in rural America on a farm and I can attest to this fact. Cows and Pigs are certainly carbon heavy animals to raise, especially the cow. The report needs to be a little more clear than just say stop eating meat. If you do intend to be responsible, eat more poultry and fish if you cannot do without meat.
Even the simplest minds can realize that cattle and meat animals are bred and raised for that purpose. If you do not do it, there is not going to be a lot of them running around. These animals need a lot of space and are also the same ones that hold a vast majority of diseases etc.
The macho, over compensating , "me man , me eat meat" is the most likely response anyone would get in this country but if you consume too much red meat which almost everyone does in the US, you will be left with a bad digestive system, greater risk for colon cancer and later in your life, you may spend days waiting for that one good ****. - ulmedas, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9Actually, better health care world wide would go a long way towards slowing population growth. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's goal is just that (slowing population growth). They (Mr. & Mrs. Gates) were quite surprised to learn that birthrates are sort of inversely proportional to life expectancy.
- curtisag, on 09/07/2008, -32/+39I just ate a huge 20 oz porterhouse, and I enjoyed every juicy CO2 filled bite. Steak and hamburgers are not something I'm willing to sacrifice.
- whiteguysamurai, on 09/08/2008, -2/+9I like meat as much as the next guy, but we eat way too much in the country, and that's why we are all a bunch of lard asses.
Moderation is the key! - infiniphunk, on 09/08/2008, -1/+7The problem with extremist environmentalists and vegetarians is they oftentimes just can't see the bigger picture. I think what the studies are showing is that REDUCING the intake would be healthy, not cutting it 100% Obviously, someone eating McDonald's daily is a bad thing, whereas a good serving of quality beef a few times a week is good.
Stop trying to throw out the baby with the bathwater. - ColorBlind, on 09/08/2008, -6/+12It's really "global confusion"
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -37/+43Give me a ***** break- why don't we just give the cows beano to cut gas emissions from their asses.
- CaptOblivious, on 09/08/2008, -1/+7Hmmm,
If it's an enzymatic problem (and it is,) then adding beano to cattle feed wouldn't be that hard.
Nor would it be the the strangest thing they put in there. - curtisag, on 09/07/2008, -4/+10Yea and who is going to pay for your future social security benefits and medicare. Our whole system depends on having enough young working population to pay for old people's retirement.
- Arrowette, on 09/08/2008, -4/+10I am not quite a vegetarian, but my husband and I started eating meat only once a week or so--mostly just because I love Indian food so much and cook it all the time (the spinach and tomato-based stuff is the best, and it has no meat). And it cut my family grocery bill in HALF--from $150+ a week to $80. It was more effective for my pocketbook than going without air conditioning in the summer would be (impossible where I live).
And of course, it helps the environment. Another good way to protect the environment, food-wise, is to buy as many products from local farmers' markets and farm stores as possible. They often have meat there, too; the vegetables taste better because they aren't treated with all those chemicals; they're healthier; and they have a tremendously reduced transportation cost, which cuts greenhouse gases. AND they are usually half the price of grocery stores.
I mean, the eggs that I buy come fresh from the hen that morning. There's nothing tastier than that! - digggggggggg, on 09/08/2008, -3/+9Probably better for your health too. Let's not forget that part.
- bluetytanium, on 09/08/2008, -2/+8I really hate it when there's anything concerning vegetarianism on the front page, because I know that 75% of the comments are going to be "HURR DURR I LIKE MEAT," and at least a couple of the remainders will be those crazy PETA freegans who think anyone who eats meat is satan.
While I do not share either of the above views, I have vegetarian tendencies, and can really agree with the guy from the article. - SRSco, on 09/08/2008, -4/+10You want to eat feed corn that cows eat? GTFO.
