- supercyc, on 05/26/2008, -3/+80Still waiting for an explanation on why I only see fat people drinking diet coke.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+42That's the DNA damage. It makes you fat.
- pharekyz, on 05/26/2008, -1/+39If I could speculate, I would say that fat people figure if they can cut calories on something such as pop, it justifies them having that extra chocolate bar or hamburger. That's why you will see a fat person order a big mac combo with a super sized fry and a diet coke.
- Utopist, on 05/26/2008, -0/+28Less Sodium benzoate, more coke!
- adml_shake, on 05/26/2008, -0/+20*looks down at Diet Coke can in front of him freshly opened* *****.
- smek2, on 05/26/2008, -3/+21I'm glad i don't drink this crap.
- kaleesh, on 05/26/2008, -2/+20dang.. i used to live on coke.. no wonder i can't function without 20 browser windows, 5 youtube videos and 10 convos with mates now.,..
- DCMarkie, on 05/26/2008, -0/+15Shopkeeper: Take this object, but beware it carries a terrible curse!
Homer: Ooh, that's bad.
Shopkeeper: But it comes with a free frogurt!
Homer: That's good.
Shopkeeper: The frogurt is also cursed.
Homer: That's bad.
Shopkeeper: But you get your choice of toppings.
Homer: That's good!
Shopkeeper: The toppings contain potassium benzoate.
Shopkeeper: ...That's bad.
Homer: Can I go now? - AustinGoodchild, on 05/26/2008, -4/+16daily mail. Blah.
- junkwheel, on 05/26/2008, -1/+11Diet Coke is garbage.

- SilverBlade2k, on 05/26/2008, -1/+9dropping Aspartame would be better...and going to REAL sugar
- trademarkhero, on 05/26/2008, -0/+8I just want to know if this will affect my Mentos fun.
- rnlmedia, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7Apparently "hat can lead to hyperactivity in children."
- Damn hats - roebeet, on 05/26/2008, -1/+8been drinking ill effects since the born I was day I've, and ill experienced I've never effects
- BOFH2, on 05/26/2008, -2/+9what did I tell you. No matter what someone is always giving weight loss advice.
- BOFH2, on 05/26/2008, -2/+8maybe it is because no matter what we eat or drink someone makes fun of us? I could eat a salad with light dressing, only vegetables and drink a diet soda and still have someone try and tell me how to lose weight.
BTW - I know a lot of people that are in shape that drink diet soda. - Bersy, on 05/26/2008, -0/+6Coca cola is still a long ways off from being a "natural product".
- Johnny1337h4x0r, on 05/26/2008, -0/+6I may be wrong, but Diet Coke includes aspartame which messes up with the function of the body that tells itself that it's not hungry any more. So anything they gain by drinking diet, they regain by eating more.
- sensical, on 05/26/2008, -0/+5I don't know why they're singling out Diet Coke. Pretty much all soda has sodium benzoate in it.
- ZimbuTheMonkey, on 05/26/2008, -0/+5You're really passionate about your diet sodas. I salute you.
- lazyguy, on 05/26/2008, -4/+8What's with all the diet coke hating here?
I happen to enjoy the taste of coke and would like to drink it without the massive amounts of calories that it contains. What's so bad about that? - Amadeus2490, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4I've never understood WHY people drink Diet Coke instead of normal Coke; do they think it's somehow better for them, or are they just a moron?
- PrestonM, on 05/26/2008, -1/+5How many formerly obese people have you heard of that say "I owe all of my weight loss to Diet Coke"? That would be like a millionaire saying "I really made it happen with my credit card points". Screw Diet Coke and their addictive aspartame *****!
- Accolade1, on 05/26/2008, -1/+5Good thing there's a DNA damage checkpoint regulated by p53 and a balance between Bax/BCl2 levels. Read: Don't worry about this study. Much more DNA damage is probably occurring from sunlight radiation than this additive and there are mechanisms in your body to regulate the damage when it is out of hand. Just remember one thing: if you get mutations in your tumor suppressor genes (loss of function) or proto-oncogenes (gain of function), you could be on the way to cancer.
- justbloggin, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4Pretty simple really, don't give pop/soda (of any kind) to kids on a regular basis. Go to wikipedia and research the term "moderation". Eat and drink REAL food that doesn't come in a box or can. Processed and over processed food is a huge North American problem. If coke is voluntarily removing an ingredient it is a pretty safe bet there is some evidence somewhere that the ***** is toxic...that decision came from Cokes legal department not the health department.
- Rustymetal, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4Yeah. I simply lost 30 pounds by doing 2 things to my diet.
Stopped drinking soda, and stopped going to Fast food.
Just imagine if i exercised O_O - Surferess, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4Different company. However, they are so competitive w/ Coca Cola they will hopefully follow suit soon. Now to get the HFCS out of soda pop.
- marx2k, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3"I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who is a weight loss doctor. He told me that recent research suggests that when the body detects sugar in the food it is digesting, it ramps up mechanisms that are responsible for absorption of sugars in the food. You know, billions of people on Earth still need this mechanism. Not everyone is a well-fed American ;) - nicko68, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3Who gives their kids Diet Coke anyway? We don't know what the effects of those artifiicial sweeteners are, etc are on our health. I'd rather my son drink one of those little mini cans of regular soda once in a while, when he's a bit older.
- kidlax, on 05/26/2008, -1/+4"Research by Southampton University found that sodium benzoate was one of seven additives - the six others are food colours - hat can lead to hyperactivity in children.
The Food Standards Agency has called for the six colours to be withdrawn from products but not sodium benzoate. "
So (aside from the spelling mistake) the Food Standards Agency banned the use of six colours of food colouring? I hope one of those colours was ginger-red...one small step to rid the world of those no-souled daywalkers. - DaleoftheUK, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3I'm not the only one who thinks coke or pepsi tastes like piss nowadays?
Stick to my water, from a tap. - fac3less, on 05/26/2008, -3/+6Actually, as it mentions it *is* naturally occurring in some fruits. So now, coke is technically less natural ;)
- stuff_ign, on 05/26/2008, -2/+5Typical Daily Mail scare-mongering using a single piece of research.
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -1/+4I guess you did not read the article. It has nothing to do with diets and it was not only diet coke that was mentioned.
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -1/+4It's a generational thing. Diet coke came out in the early 80's. Most obsesses adults today were teens then, thought that changing to diet would "fix" them. Kept eating the same, and now only drink diet coke cause it's all they know. You don't see fat children drinking diet coke, they get regular coke. Diet coke to fat people is completely a generational thing. Yes I speak from my own experience and a recently multi decade high school reunion i just went to.
- derek20cali, on 05/26/2008, -2/+5Here's some advice: eat more fruits and vegetables, less fattening foods. Your fatness is due to your own poor choices.
- stormfish77, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who is a weight loss doctor. He told me that recent research suggests that when the body detects sugar in the food it is digesting, it ramps up mechanisms that are responsible for absorption of sugars in the food. This would be convenient for our ancestors who needed to utilize every extra bit of food-energy they could find.
The interesting thing is that it seems that these same mechanisms are activated by the artificial sweeteners in diet soda. In effect, by drinking diet soda the body is triggered into extracting more calories from the consumed food than it would otherwise.
A research study at Purdue University is in a similar vein, though I don't believe that it is the same one that he mentioned to me:

- Netrilix, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3Murdats: Why not stop drinking soda altogether? We ask alcoholics to give up alcohol altogether; we don't offer them non-alcoholic beer, we ask them to get out of the habit entirely. I was 5'11" 250 lbs in January. The week I gave up drinking Coke (I was drinking 2+ liters a day), I dropped 10 lbs. I still exercise the same amount (a couple mountain hikes or long bike rides a week), but none of that exercise made any difference until I gave up drinking soda. I haven't had a sip in just over four months, and I don't miss it at all.
- geezor, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3Whoooosh!
- Netrilix, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3"We decided it was time to change the formula" does not work. You will have far too many people swearing the new stuff doesn't taste nearly as good, and you'll also have people who know there's a real health reason, who will work to bring it to light in the end anyways. I think I'll throw up a little in my mouth if anyone manages to sue Coca Cola for admitting why they removed the ingredients, especially considering how common these ingredients are in other products. On the other hand, I would love to see some lawsuits against some companies that choose NOT to remove these ingredients now that this has come to light.
- nibble4bits, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2But does taking out this additive stop the Mentos & Diet Coke effect??
- weezer1024, on 05/26/2008, -4/+6Holy crap, they got an argument from the "Committee on Mutagenicity" who says it's safe to drink Diet Coke. What do you have to do to be part of the "Committee on Mutagenicity"? I bet they all are hump-backed and have three eyes. Maybe it's a three eye minimum to get in...
- stack3r, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2what the ***** lol.
People fat or not drink diet coke and coke zero because its not as bad as normal coke in terms of sugar content. - joshuasawyer, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2You can still by TAB at a lot of places. It's made by Coca Cola and when compared to Coke Zero it is essentially the same ingredients. I think it just got re-packaged as Coke Zero.
- marx2k, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2mmmmm tap water... no thanks... Stick to my reverse osmosis water from under my tap
- nibble4bits, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2ah crap, just noticed someone else commented on this... stupid "Match case" on my firefox Find! :(
- LegalizeGanja, on 05/26/2008, -3/+5Because first of all diet coke tastes like watered down coke, and maybe a loogie spit in there for good measure. Second, anything with zero calories that's supposed to be a sugary soda has got to be giving you cancer. Finally, pop is just bad for you in general, and there are way better drinks for you that taste even better in my opinion. Might I suggest 100% orange juice.
