- XeXers, on 08/19/2008, -26/+1091Its funny that in america, you can kill someone (IE: join the military) at 18, but you can't drink until your 21. Its absurd.
At 18, the government thinks you are capable enough to be given a gun for war, but not a bottle of whiskey. - QUAKthunder, on 08/19/2008, -75/+72018? How about getting rid of it all together?
While you're at it, legalize weed. - cparsons, on 08/19/2008, -8/+378Most college drinking is done at house parties not at bars. They can make the age whatever they want but people who want to drink will regardless.
- georgemason01, on 08/19/2008, -2/+299But what would cops in college towns do with their time if they couldn't go around harassing and arresting 18-20 year olds for drinking?
- oli5993, on 08/19/2008, -3/+275In Germany, you're allowed to drink beer and wine with 16, but you're not allowed to drive until you're 18. I really like this method, because I think it lets teenagers experiment with alcohol and find out its effects before they're allowed to drive. That way, when they have a license, they'll know the dangers of alcohol and won't immediately overdo it.
- Almadiel, on 08/19/2008, -5/+267My opinion has always been that once you are old enough to die in service of your country you are probably old enough to handle a couple beers.
A high drinking age only encourages young people to conceal their drinking from adults, and try to get the very most out of it when they find an opportunity to do so. - quii, on 08/19/2008, -9/+248"One study estimated more than 500,000 full-time students at four-year colleges suffer injuries each year related in some way to drinking."

One study estimated more than 5,000,000 full-time students at four-year colleges get laid each year related in some way to drinking - speel, on 08/19/2008, -2/+226Here is also a little fun fact .. you can also work at a liquor store at 18.
- Sherman901, on 08/19/2008, -1/+187wait, hold on... the CEO of mothers against drunk driving is a dude?
- laofmoonster, on 08/19/2008, -12/+183http://www.youthrights.org/supportourtroops.php
Over 600 American troops under the age of 21 have died in Afghanistan and Iraq. How do we tell their families that we value the sacrifices of these troops, when we didn't even treat them as able to drink responsibly? - PERKASETMUNCHER, on 08/19/2008, -7/+157I agree with the idea current laws encourage dangerous binge drinking. I was drinking when I was 14, but when I was 21 it just wasn't that fun anymore. It's like the excitement wasn't there anymore. I totally agree with this law.
- kemp34, on 08/19/2008, -1/+143I think he meant getting rid of age restrictions.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -23/+150Thats good for young college drunkards lol...It should depend upon the person whether he/she wants to drink or not.. I have seen guys and girls drinking at the age of 13-15...
- dsoldier, on 08/19/2008, -4/+125Kill another human being for military purposes at 18: Legal
Buy a pack of cigarettes, which can lead to cancer and death, at 18: Legal
Vote for the next President of the United States at 18: Legal
Buy lottery tickets and scratch-offs (Gambling) at 18: Legal
Drink and or buy alcohol at 18: Illegal
There seems to be a double standard here. The one that has always gotten me is the military. Kids are recruited right out of High School from poor Urban areas to fight the wars of rich politicians. They go into war killing enemies, and sometimes innocent civilians leaving a lot of them traumatized for life. So the government thinks they are mature enough to handle the guilt of murder, but not mature enough to drink responsibly. ***** ridiculous if you ask me. - alliekins619, on 08/19/2008, -1/+115At 18 most places you can run for local government. So someone can be the mayor of a town, but they're not responsible enough to have a beer?
Part of the problem is that high school and college drinking is going to happen whether it's legal or not. And when it's illegal, when someone underage needs treatment for something like alcohol poisoning they and their friends are less likely to seek help because they're afraid of getting in trouble. Lowering the drinking age means people will learn responsible drinking habits when they still have their parents to fall back on if something happens. - wsuvtx, on 08/19/2008, -9/+122Why not teach your kids responsibility? There is a time and place for drinking. You might be surprised that they actually might be a little more mature than you think.
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -0/+101No ***** it depends on whether they want to drink or not, nobody is advocating forced alcohol consumption at 18.
- poploserdigg, on 08/19/2008, -21/+118girls should be allowed to drink at 16, so I have a chance with them.
- lulzy, on 08/19/2008, -1/+90superfail
- Ragzouken, on 08/19/2008, -6/+89Hate to break this to you, but Special K is just cereal.
- apothekari, on 08/19/2008, -4/+86@wsuvtx
Here's a joint and a beer dude give it a half hour and read QUAKthunder's comment again. - cerealjynx, on 08/19/2008, -7/+88Just legalize pot and 18 year olds will have something better to do.
- MisterEX, on 08/19/2008, -3/+82So true. I see people setting down half-full beers never to pick them up again. I see people tipping their glasses spilling alcoholic drinks all over. There is a lot of alcohol that goes untouched and never finds the joy of being consumed. Help us stop alcohol abuse. Be mindful. Be responsible. Finish your drink.
- pittpat, on 08/19/2008, -6/+81This has got to be one of the most archaic laws in this country. In most other developed countries the legal age to consume alcohol is 18. In my opinion if you teach children about alcohol at an earlier age they will respect it more and not get into binge drinking.
It's not right that someone can be executed for a crime, sent off to war, hold public office, at 18 but they have to wait 3 years to have a beer? - rpfinley, on 08/19/2008, -7/+79I am fine with making the drinking age lower if you increase the punishment for drunk driving. It's refreshing to see people actually admit the problem instead of covering their eyes.
/watched the hypocrisy first hand serving on a greek judicial board - inactive, on 08/19/2008, -4/+72America is pretty much fail. You can shoot porn when you are 18 but not drink beer?
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -11/+74Alcohol abuse by college students is a huge problem.
- tech42er, on 08/19/2008, -1/+62Well, since 18 is the age of majority and the age when one legally becomes an adult, it makes no sense for the government to treat 18 and 19-year old adults like children. The only way this is constitutional is becausethey "left it up to the states" but then extorted the states with highway money to force them to keep the drinking age at 21. But it's asinine.
- kurupttek, on 08/19/2008, -11/+7118 for the girls
Alright! - DreKor, on 08/19/2008, -2/+62Canada does it...
- Iwantawii, on 08/19/2008, -3/+59"Injuries related to drinking."
lollercoaster!
I bet 99% of these injuries are scraped knees, getting your ass kicked, and burned ramen fingers. - Skooma714, on 08/19/2008, -22/+78It should be outlawed. IT'S AGAINST JESUS AND STUFF
- commiecat, on 08/19/2008, -2/+55That's the point of the article. The argument is that if the kids are already allowed to drink in college legally, they'll be less likely to binge drink at these house parties.
- punkass1977, on 08/19/2008, -0/+50Actually, if they wanted to do that they'd make the campus dry for all and enforce the hell out of that policy. That way, students would HAVE to go off campus to drink, and any problems that arise from that (alcohol poisoning, drunk driving, etc) are no longer the school's concern as they happened off-campus.
They pulled this crap at my school back in 1998. The county sheriff actually came to campus and asked the school to rescind the policy, as drunk driving within one mile of the school had soared 9-fold. - humperdeath, on 08/19/2008, -3/+50Back in my day, the drinking age was 18. I went to college and they had vending machines with beer in them. (Pretty cool, Id say) Very convenient, no drinking problems, no sneaking around, no need for extra security and police. If 18 is old enough to fight, then it's old enough to drink !!!!
- SaDan, on 08/19/2008, -4/+5118 for unsupervised drinking, and 14 for supervised (family events, restaurants with the folks, etc). I think that would be an excellent compromise here in the USA.
- scoottie, on 08/19/2008, -0/+46isnt he the one that made wine from water? lol
- 3lit3, on 08/19/2008, -50/+95I'm picturing across the states everywhere, 18 year olds going to the bars.....yeah thats exactly what a senior in high school needs lol.
- SteveCUBE, on 08/19/2008, -0/+44public urination
- Piontek, on 08/19/2008, -8/+51Even worse, how can we live with the thought that they passed without ever having experienced sweet plastered-ness?
- septicmadman, on 08/19/2008, -3/+46Alcohol abuse is a huge problem.
- Tyrghast, on 08/19/2008, -2/+43Let them drink at 16, or hell 14 and raise the driving age to 18. Let them learn how to limit themselves before we let them climb in to murder wagons and rampage across our highways.
- eraser34, on 08/19/2008, -1/+40COMPREHENSION FAIL
- Paigelil, on 08/19/2008, -1/+40Another fun fact, you can bartend at 18 :D
- tech42er, on 08/19/2008, -2/+39No, he meant getting rid of prohibition on alcohol and weed.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -35/+701) this has nothing to do with weed. Keep that ***** out of this comment thread, it is unrelated to the article.
2) why are there restrictions in the first place? Biological development of human organs. Maturity (mental and physical), growth of the liver, brain, and the rest of your body are needed before you should legally be allowed to abuse your body. Age 14? Why don't we get rid of the driving age restriction altogether? Let children drive all over the place by themselves. Same argument, really. Age restrictions are to protect the safety of not only yourself, but the people around you. Get that "no restriction" ***** out of your head. Weed is a completely different argument, since it doesn't have as many health and safety risks involved.
In my province, drinking age is 18, and it pisses me off to go to places with ones that are higher. 18 is the right age, in my opinion. Do they really expect adults to wait three years of college to be able to drink? That is just stupid. - DreKor, on 08/19/2008, -2/+36Then go to a different bar. Do you think the 55 year-old mill workers feel comfortable hanging out with you?
- Hetman, on 08/19/2008, -2/+34This whole argument for a drinking age is absurd. I can see having an age like 16 or something. But seriously if you start drinking around responsible people ie your parents. By time you go to college you usually understand your tolerance and the negative effects of alcohol. And if you do not have responsible parents what does it matter. You are probably sneaking around drinking anyways.
- ambrosious, on 08/19/2008, -3/+35I'm from Dartmouth, and I can understand why our president is petitioning for this - drinking is a huge problem here. Not only does the high drinking age encourage binge drinking, it gets kids in trouble at random for getting caught. Even though 99% of people drink underage, only a few are punished and the authorities feel like they need to make examples of them. For doing the same thing everyone else is doing you can get expelled, go to jail etc. It's a total double-standard and needs to be stopped.
- pintomp3, on 08/19/2008, -1/+32i don't think the age of consent is his problem, just getting consent is.
