- spritom, on 05/15/2009, -2/+21Coke parties aren't anything new.
oh...the can with the red and white stripes....never mind. - bjenidles, on 05/15/2009, -1/+19Canadian mirror: http://watch.thecomedynetwork.ca/the-colbert-repor ...
- Solkre, on 05/15/2009, -0/+14So if soda is being targeted because it's bad for you, are they not going to tax the diet/zero variety?
- Vosem, on 05/15/2009, -0/+14Is it bad when your urine comes out carbonated?
- enevitable, on 05/15/2009, -1/+12Actually diet soda is marginally worse.
- 8FoldPath, on 05/15/2009, -1/+10I can tell you have lots of friends.
- CaptObvious, on 05/15/2009, -0/+8Patrick Bateman: He was into that whole Yale thing.
Donald Kimball: Yale thing?
Patrick Bateman: Yeah, Yale thing.
Donald Kimball: What whole Yale thing?
Patrick Bateman: Well, he was probably a closet homosexual who did a lot of cocaine. That whole Yale thing. - dsl145, on 05/15/2009, -3/+10"We are taxed to high-heaven already!" ... are you kidding. America is way less taxed than most countries. Where would you get the notion that you're over taxed?? is it because you have to pay ANY??
- bbliss17, on 05/15/2009, -0/+7Coke is so 1990 lets have a Dew party.
- dman24752, on 05/15/2009, -0/+6I'm dangling quite nicely thank you.
- ivanmarsh, on 05/15/2009, -3/+9Ha-ha... I just have to laugh about the soda health-care tax every time I pay $7.50 for a pack of cigarettes. That slippery slope got slippery pretty damn fast there didn't it folks.
- deathandtaverns, on 05/15/2009, -0/+6they should just lighten up the corn subsidies and not pay farmers to keep the price of corn down. That way the price things that are bad for us like corn syrup and corn fed beef go up and the government could save money instead of giving it away to factory farms. It would destroy the family farm however, so we'd have to see how important those are to our national identity.
- Lionhart, on 05/15/2009, -0/+6Did anyone follow the link after to the $1000 meals? Food covered in overpriced caviar and then ice cream covered in pure edible gold...how ridiculous.
- jwolcott, on 05/15/2009, -0/+6Thanks for letting us know why you dugg this, we appreciate it.
- strictnein, on 05/15/2009, -0/+6The thing is, they don't actually want you to stop smoking, even though they claim that's the goal of the taxes. They desperately need the money you smokers generate.
- fuzzybad, on 05/15/2009, -0/+5No kidding, let's tax soda as much as cigs and see how fast that gets repealed!
- inactive, on 05/15/2009, -0/+5I buy 2x16oz bags of tobacco and 5 boxes of tubes to make 50 packs of smokes. The price jumped from about $50 to $140 bucks on that last tax hike. Good thing I don`t drink soda.
- RivenEmrys, on 05/15/2009, -0/+5I knew you were getting ripped off by buying soda, but 175 times was more than I was aware. Thank god I've given up soda.
- Snoogs, on 05/15/2009, -1/+6I also plan on protesting this weekend with a coke party. Pepsi just burns in your nose.
- RSterkenburg, on 05/15/2009, -1/+6But then how to they fund their wars? They're already like $11.2 trillion dollars behind. Money in peoples' pockets probably won't help that.
Though... nothing is going to help that. - dman24752, on 05/15/2009, -0/+5I saw the first half of Boogie Nights and it showed me how partying with coke is the best thing every. Everything's brightly colored. You get to have sex with tons of beautiful women while making porn. I never did finish that movie though...
- fuzzybad, on 05/15/2009, -1/+5This is sure to blow up in his face..
- Defiant001, on 05/15/2009, -0/+4Have a Pepsi, Coke, RC Cola, Presidents Choice Cola, and that Jones Soda, (what ones am I forgetting here?) and everyone can come!
- stealthspc, on 05/15/2009, -2/+6The government is just going to take a little bit from everywhere.
Why can't they just be transparent and tax us directly instead of sneaking tax in on everything? - strictnein, on 05/15/2009, -0/+4Saw that on TV. The best quote "Can I pay you another $1000 to force a poor person to watch me eat this?" (or something along those lines).
- strictnein, on 05/15/2009, -1/+5Depends on what tax you're talking about. Our corporate taxes are actually right up with much of Europe.
- deathandtaverns, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4a soda tax would be a flat tax.
- Vosem, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3They do that too.
- inactive, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4Soda lobbyists? No *****? I wonder who's campaign they contributed to?
- burningplants, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4If they're going to start taxing things all things that are bad for the public, are they going to tax politicians for existing?
- MWeather, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4So long as I have to pay sin tax on my booze and cigarettes, I fully support this law. In fact, this law doesn't go far enough. There are a slew of unhealthy activities that are not taxed. Either tax them all, or don't use taxes as a form of social engineering.
- jessemoya, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4I rather like the idea of taxing, say, cigarettes and other things that are demonstrably bad for society. It eases some of the unfair burden off of the rest of us who still have to pay other consequences for our neighbors' decisions.
- ryanonfire, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3You already pay for coke's massive brand tax why would 2 more cents be any worse.
- teamgwho, on 05/15/2009, -2/+4it's a hullaballoo about nothing. well maybe not nothing, but it's disproportionate. I'm gonna pay an extra penny, maybe 2 on a can of soda. BFD.

- Celarnor, on 05/15/2009, -0/+2*****, I'm paying $8.50.
- inactive, on 05/15/2009, -0/+2Jones Soda? How dare they try to replace the chemical crap which our bodies aren't even designed to properly process with real sugar!? How dare they challenge the corn lobby!? It's unamerican.
- inactive, on 05/15/2009, -2/+4dug for title. and the subsequent segment.
- stormspire, on 05/15/2009, -0/+2dugg for irony
- Remmiz, on 05/15/2009, -1/+2And Coke leaves a filmy after-feel in your mouth.
- 1smartguy, on 05/15/2009, -0/+1People with friends don't have time for Digg.
- thinkb4utype, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1So President Lincoln wants to impose an income tax on rich people making more than $5000 a year ... it's not my concern. I don't care if the rich pay more taxes, the war has to be paid for by somebody. My $300 a year income isn't taxed, that's what is important to me. And my kids aren't going to make such sums either. Let the rich pay, they can afford it.
- smich421, on 08/11/2009, -0/+1....and he shall drink......soda.....pop.
- SpykerSpeed, on 05/15/2009, -2/+3Taxes "create" dollars?
Holy *****. - inactive, on 05/15/2009, -1/+2Anything is bad for you if not consumed in moderation. Thank you Captain Obvious.
- inactive, on 05/15/2009, -0/+1Thank you, citizen.
- twomeyw23334, on 05/15/2009, -3/+4Look on the bright side, after the government implements the Soda tax, HSA savings tax, HMO tax, etc...., they'll offer really affordable health care!
- garyh84, on 05/15/2009, -3/+4They are taxing a product which isn't vital to everyday life, not income. There is a difference.
One or two cents for each can of soda isn't going to make anyone go broke, but it will create millions of dollars/year to help pay for health benefits. The real crime is that we have gone this long with 50+million Americans who can't see a doctor. -
