- Maxwell1234, on 04/03/2009, -4/+59Coke is a hell of a drink.
- yoyoyoyo, on 04/03/2009, -32/+64let's settle this once and for all. digg me up for Coke, digg me down for Pepsi.
may the best drink win. - LoveWidescreen, on 04/03/2009, -16/+47But it *DOESN'T* lead to weight gain unless you drink ten of them in a day and never exercise! If they're going after Coke for those claims, then every single thing that we eat (save vegetables) leads to weight gain.
if ($CALORIES_CONSUMED > $CALORIES_BURNED_OFF) { $WEIGHT++ }
That's the fact of the matter for everything, not just Coke. But, hey, don't let facts get in the way of taking down an e-e-e-e-e-e-vil corporation. - Hoosteen, on 04/03/2009, -0/+20Does Coke still contain High Fructose Corn Syrup? When does the cane sugar kosher version come out? Or maybe I'll make a trip to costco for the mexican version.
- LoveWidescreen, on 04/03/2009, -5/+24*****. The only thing that leads to weight gain (save for specific medical conditions) is a person's inactivity or inability to compensate for consumed calories. That's all. There is nothing "over simplified" about it.
If someone wants to consume an 1800 calorie stick of butter and sugar, it's certainly not healthy, but if that person eats nothing else for the rest of the day and drinks nothing but water, is that person automatically going to gain weight? If I drink a can of Coke every day but I eat lightly throughout the day, that can of Coke is NOT going to lead to weight gain. If I drink five cans every day then sit on my ass watching TV, what is more responsible for any weight gain? The Coca-Cola company or me for drinking that much then sitting on my ass?
I'm so sick of this attitude that the corporations or their marketing are somehow responsible for people gaining weight when the only thing that can be blamed is the person who voluntarily decides what does or does not go into his/her mouth. - booyahbitch, on 04/03/2009, -1/+16Everything in moderation...
- Zaxcomp, on 04/03/2009, -1/+14It contained coca leaf. Not refined cocaine.
- stjoad, on 04/03/2009, -1/+14Coke may not directly lead to weight gain if someone consumes it in moderation, but they certainly can't say it does NOT lead to weight gain or tooth decay at all. That's very deceptive.
- EMFK, on 04/03/2009, -8/+21Coca Cola has never been the same since they came out with the "New Coke" versus the "Classic Coke" formula all those years ago. Looks like they have the same people working in the marketing department. :-)
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -7/+20It's better than Pepsi.
- MrZaiko, on 04/03/2009, -1/+12"Coca-Cola did once contain an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass, but in 1903 it was removed.[25] Coca-Cola still contains coca flavoring.
After 1904, instead of using fresh leaves, Coca-Cola started using "spent" leaves—the leftovers of the cocaine-extraction process with cocaine trace levels left over at a molecular level.[26] To this day, Coca-Cola uses as an ingredient a cocaine-free coca leaf extract prepared at a Stepan Company plant in Maywood, New Jersey."
It aint no Myth... - norman619, on 04/03/2009, -2/+13Coke isn't what leads to rotting teeth. What leads to that is poor dental hygene. It doesn't lead to weight gain either. What leads to weight gain is poor self-control and lack of physical activity. Brush and floss daily along with maintaining an active life (regular exercise) and you can eat/drink just about anything you like w/o much worry. Everything in moderation. Moderation is the key term here. Take too much of anything and don't take care of yourself and you are asking for problems. You can't blame the alcoholic beverage for alcoholism.
- esteskid, on 04/03/2009, -0/+11coke uses cane sugar in most European countries, the only reason high fructose corn syrup is used so much in the US is because corn farming subsidies make it a lot cheaper to use
- ConvictBoy, on 04/03/2009, -2/+10Coke adds life
- clawzkatt, on 04/03/2009, -2/+10Man,
I love coke.
:( - angusm, on 04/03/2009, -3/+11To quote 'Bloom County', "They both taste like malted battery acid anyway."
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+7I drink eat and coke mcdonalds.
- TempusEdax, on 04/03/2009, -9/+15Dr. Pepper.
- mithrasinvictus, on 04/03/2009, -1/+7And smoking just one cigarette will not necessarily give you lung cancer, but if the tobacco industry were to take out an ad to "bust" that myth it would be deceptive.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6Why doesn't the ACCC go after companies that do real damage to people. Like Noni juice for claiming it cures cancer and bilking people out of millions in multi- level marketing scams. Or Kangen water for claiming their thousand dollar machine can cure any virus with "Alkaline Water" . Any Chemist will lol at that. I don't see them going after any of the homeopathic medicine or "alternative" pushers either and they are responsible for more deaths than coke, pepsi, kfc, taco bell, and Wendy's baconator.
***** the ACCC. - sHockz, on 04/03/2009, -1/+7Coke, at least its not crack!!!
god i love irony - phuggachief, on 04/03/2009, -1/+7I EFFING LOVE COKE...that said, I worked out and had at least a can a day to balance out any excess calories. Minor gut development aside, it really did a number on my teeth. Cavities galore (I never had any before and have a fairly good dental routine).
Need more proof? http://embraceliving.net/blog/2009/03/5-reasons-to ...
Let's not forget about the caffiene, either. Again, I love it, and now ration myself to have some once a week at most. - KSUdesigner, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6They do put warning labels on the can, it's just called "Nutritional Information." All you need to know is right there in that box.
- MasterGrief, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6Maybe she's sad because the company got in a bit of trouble?
- lisaawesome, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5No ***** bob. Last time I checked though I've been the exact same 100 pounds for the past 8 years regardless of how many calories I take in. I never said I don't drink soda because it is going to make me fat. Getting fat is not something I worry about at all at this point in my life. But if I'm supposedly costing the healthcare system so much money by smoking that they need to tax me extra then they need to tax other items that contribute to high healthcare costs. I am actually in great health right now despite my vices but all the overweight people I know my age have to take 473293 medications and are constantly having to go to the doctor for medical problems that they keep getting. If I get lung cancer it will likely not be until later whereas the significantly overweight people have already started to rack up bills and will continue to long before I ever possibly get cancer.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+5I know one thing, I went to diet coke for 2 weeks and lost 5 lbs. My daily diet stayed the same except for this.
- isunktheship, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5UNITY
- vinetari, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5lol, burn!
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+5Are you serious? I drink water as well as a can or two of soda a day. I don't live on soda.
- RileyCourage, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Shouldn't be surprised at how much weight people who believe Coke's not fattening have to throw around.
- LoveWidescreen, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4And anyone who can look at a can of Coke, see "230 calories per can" right there on the can, then look at an advertisement and think, "Oh, well it actually *DOESN"T* lead to weight gain so I can drink however much I want!" is an idiot that can't be protected by "truth in advertising" anyway.
- paradox4190, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/cocaine.asp
- norman619, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4LOL!!! I guess all food should be blamed for leading to weight gain and tooth rot. You are aware of the fact that too much of anything w/o taking care of yourself will lead to weight gain and tooth rot right?
"Oh, and what you're basically saying is that too many cigarettes will lead to cancer, but if you only smoke in moderation you'll be fine"
Bingo! If you bothered to do some research you'd find while there is some sort of like between smkoing and various forms of cancer there is no DIRECT link that oncologists, the people who study cancer, can use to say w/o a doubt that smoking itself leads to cancer. This is because they don't really know what actually causes normal cells to become cancerous. Ask any of them if they know for sure that smoking cuases any of the various cancers and they will tell you no. Why? Because there are lifetime smokers who never got cancer. they will tell you if you smoke your chances of getting cancer are higher based on studies but they can not tell you if you will def get cancer. The question is far more complicated than you pretend it is.
Oh, and before you accuse me of being a smoker in denial or some other nonsense, I'm not a smoker. I can't smoke due to medical reasons. I also find smoking pretty disgusting. It amazes me how tabacco is legal but weed, which isn;t even addictive, is viewed as a dangeroud drug and illegal. - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+4Does it make you feel good to tell people what they should and should not do?
- kingmanic, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Travelsonic: Water and 0 calorie soda can certainly lead to weight gain but thats excessively temporary weight gain. If you have some sort of strange compulsion to keep up that level of drinking you probably would end up in serious health problems bu the weight gain would all be in water retention.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5You eat at McDonalds? Have you no self respect?!
- derekmas10, on 04/03/2009, -2/+6perhaps they could capture a larger market share if they do add cocaine. It might rot the teeth, but you won't feel it as your face will be numb.
- Malteserr, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Why ":("?
Be happy about it.. coke ftw :) - nepidae, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5Coca-Cola doesn't make people fat, people make people fat.
- kingmanic, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5The problem with liquid calories is your brain does not register them. They become an addition to your daily calorie intake but do not drive you to feel fuller or less hungry. you often eat the same number of non liquid calories. One can of coke a day won't do that much but people (myself included) have 3-4.
I do the diet coke thing but it'll rot my teeth because the phosphoric acid they use as a tartening agent in both the normal and diet versions inhibit dietary calcium intake along with the fact that it's a mild acid will weaken your teeth.
In addition the normal version uses high fructose corn syrup HFCS which digest differently than sugar. Studies show that animals fed with HFCS fatten up more so than animals fed the same calories in sugar. Aspartame can also induce low blood sugar because it triggers increased insulin levels without providing the sugar to offset that and it leads to a blood sugar crash which induces hunger.
A lot of heavily refined foods and non foods (is 0 calories stuff really food?) have been redesigned to be cheaper to produce but that has had the side effect of making a lot of them worse for you in complicated ways. The type of calories you take in do have a bearing on weight gain. 1800 calories of aspartame and HFCS may not result in weight gain but generally they induce you to eat more than 1800 calories as a unintended consequence. - inactive, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Agreed. This argument has just been settled.
- beesaretasty, on 04/03/2009, -2/+6Contrary to the myth that New Coke was a failure, it allowed Coke to switch from more costly sugar to cheaper corn syrup. Not only did they get to make the switch and save a lot of money, but people were actually grateful when they brought the corn syrupy "Classic Coke" formula to market. Brilliant marketing, not a failure.
- crunchdigg, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4the guys writing the advertising copy?
- coreyb, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4And Cap'n Crunch does not cut the roof of your mouth.
- lisaawesome, on 04/03/2009, -2/+6Honestly as a smoker and a drinker who rarely drinks soda I think it's about damn time. I don't agree with sin taxes but if they're going to tax my sins when obesity is one of the biggest problems in the US now they need to tax other "sins" similarly. If we use the healthcare cost argument for smokers and drinkers this needs to be extended to coke and fast food which are most definitely making a big contribution to our obesity and diabetes explosion which are not cheap to treat and lead to further problems. I want to punch a bitch when I have two ton timmy getting onto me for being unhealthy by smoking. Give me a ***** break!
- PizzaEagle, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4thats cuz youre not putting enough rum in it
- NJank, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5sorry. anything other than Mountain Dew Baha Blast at Taco Bell is blasphemy.
- bobburn1, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5Compared to alternatives (water, diet soda, etc) it can lead to weight gain. The idea that it does not (and implicitly, can not) is ridiculous.
