- L0NER, on 07/07/2009, -0/+31wow, all cynics aside, mcdonalds could change the world if they put fueling stations in every parking lot that they own.
- emkaysmith, on 07/07/2009, -0/+17I would never have thought of this. McDonalds is so ubiquitous, you'd never be far from a charge-up. Just look for the Golden Arches when the battery starts to run low. Great marketing for them, too.
If this pans out, somebody at McD's is getting a BIG promotion. - Leviathan433, on 07/07/2009, -1/+14The Enertis is awesome but I am not going to bust out 12,000 for it. You could buy a Yaris for that.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11Seriously, it's a pretty interesting move and is definitely a big step in promoting electrics.
- mejf2loy, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8Does the Geek Squad do maintenance?
- nicktheawesome, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6If McDonald's leaves some other business will start cooking burgers.
- immatellyouwhat, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6...at the mall where you work.
- emkaysmith, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6Sure, but . . . electric cars designed in Detroit? By recycled SUV-designers? I think I'll wait for Toyota's version. I'll park it next to my Prius.
- TexMexRex, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Actually they do. (Acording to different article) But I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with that.
- tamman2000, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5It seems really nice, but why would you build a motorcycle with a top speed of 50? if it was 65-70 I would be all over this...
- emkaysmith, on 07/07/2009, -1/+6I've bought maybe eight laptops over the years, a large-screen TV, and three cameras at Best Buy -- mostly when they were having a sale. Got great prices and never had anything break down on me. Don't be a snob, man.
- spriggig, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Of course, where else would you charge a segway?
- dirtycanucker, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5The article is vague in its description of Best Buys role. Something like that SHOULD require a motorcycle licence right? ( I don't know, that is why the question). If not, then there will be a bunch of ignorant ***** tards killing themselves on them all the time. Secondly if they do require the licence, it will be a sad day in America when they entrust Best Buy employees/ high school drop outs with ensuring that whoever buys one of those has the proper documentation and regulatory approvals. Also, I second the thought that the price point allowing you to buy a Yaris for the same price and having an actual reputable vehicle with a real maintenance staff to look after it.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4"Looks like this scratch is pretty deep. You'll need to buy a new one."
- BigLou, on 07/07/2009, -2/+6Great, so now I can buy a vehicle from the same knowledgeable and friendly staff I buy all my other electronics and gadgets from.
For those of you who couldn't tell, I am of coarse being completely sarcastic. In no way would I purchase such an expensive and involved investment from a big-box retailer. Nor do I actually shop at Best Buy in the first place. - papashawn, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3I will wear my three wolf moon shirt as I mount my courtesy scooter.
- TexMexRex, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3fu2
- specialK16, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3If you think about it carefully..... this makes perfect sense.
- Konrad9, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Because it wouldn't go nearly as far at that speed?
Also, yeah a Yaris.
Or a Versa. Or an Accent. Aveo (not that I would get one). Rio. Etc. - WoWii, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Even though BB and MCdees are involved, this is an all around good thing.
- JCEEZ, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Obviously the Oil Companies aren't going to offer electric plug ins.... and our auto-makers aren't going to be making any plug ins....
- lamehead, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2So will Best buy fix this scooter when it has problems? Can I get Geek Squad insurance for that?
Also, this thing takes 3 hrs to charge and has a 35-45 miles range. Hope you have a long enough lunch to get that thing recharged. - RadiatedAnt, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2so now I have to drive all the way down to North Carolina to charge my electic scooter
- Jaime2000, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Hey dude, thanks for the tip about the Yaris. I've been interested in cheap cars for a while now.
- askantik, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3Of course, but that other business won't necessarily have over 31,000 locations in 119 countries...
- EtherGnat, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2No, no they don't. Chevron acquired controlling interest in Ovonics, the inventor of the large NiMH batteries used in the EV1, when it purchased Texaco, which in turn had acquired it from GM. Contrary to popular belief they are still happy to license the technology--it has notably been licensed for use in the Saturn Aura and Chevy Malibu hybrids.
- CaptObvious, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2So if I charge it at McD's too often, will my car get fat?
- cowsgonemadd3, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2It is called doing YOUR OWN research BEFORE buying just like you need to do with electronics. Be a knowledgeable buyer and you won't have to ask for help from a unsmart employee.
- Jaime2000, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Dear Lord, I hope not.
- phyx726, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2as long as you don't ask to be supercharged
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1So when will they file for bankruptcy?
- tamman2000, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1That's fine... I rarely need to go more than 20 miles round trip, and I could keep is slow if I ever needed to go 40 miles, but I need to be able to use a freeway...
- Chupacabraz, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2By way of comparison, how many gasoline-powered cars have the oil companies offered over the years? Has any oil company in recent history ever sold a gasoline powered car?
In case you hadn't noticed, the automakers are tripping over each other's dicks to get electric cars out now. - Locupleto, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Brilliant move by McDonalds. I'll never buy from Best Buy though.
- askantik, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2While it would logistically be a huge success, I don't really want to support McDonald's. Besides, McDonald's could just close down all of it's bazillion stores and stop serving a mazillion hamburgers every day and do the environment more good than all these charging stations. :/
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1"Hi, I'll take one Big Mac, one strawberry shake, and 2 kilowatts of electricity, please."
- dvnt1, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1No one has ever been able to explain to me why electric cars are better than gas cars. The electricity has to come from somewhere, and that's exactly the problem. While a coal electric plant may be far more efficient than an internal combustion engine, the transport of that power is not, not at this point any way.
Yet again it seems like we're irrationally reaching for something and making it out to be something that it's not.
How the hell are we going to support electric cars on our countries power grid?! - inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1im reading this on digg, which links me to greenbiz.com which starts its article with "...The Wall Street Journal reports..."
thanks internet. - Kaegro, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Darwin Awards ring a bell? Maybe its a plot buy the government to kill all the high school drop outs. That Obama, he's a crafty one!
- stevelectric, on 07/25/2009, -0/+1BigLou- Yes, "Best Buy" does have as a part of it's business plan taking advantage of inexperienced computer buyers:
http://www.communati.com/steve-lee/think-best
Verizon has a "free Mini Netbook" that buyers should know about also:
http://www.communati.com/redwriteblue/mini-net-boo ... - DillonHinson, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1So the article said that they will be rolling out these scooters in Best Buys on the Pacific coast, starting in Portland. Yet, McDonald's thinks they can change the world by having a charging station 3,000 miles away! Scooters will be on the West Coast, McDonalds' charging station on the East! Does not make sense to me. Wouldn't a McD's in a bigger city on the West Coast be more practical?
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1why?
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1I wonder if Newegg can ship me an electric car...
- Kaegro, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1As far as awesome goes, 12k$ isnt for something like that. If I lived in L.A or Miami or even Tokyo for that matter sure I'd buy it, I bet it could easily be tweeked for more speed and maybe be hooked up to an iphone or something. Linux maybe, hmmm. BUT i live in Canada...5 months where I couldnt enjoy it and i certainly couldn't drive it out in the country. Too bad, sounded promising, 12k$? no thanks, but Best Buy is still good for some speakers though.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Participating Best Buys are on the west coast. Participating McDonald's are on the east coast. Pretty sure it's not going to work.
- Brickedin21, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2great, an already fat america is about to be supersized by people that forked the 12k for a useless electric car and can only afford the dollar menu.
- Hetman, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1I know it is not the case. I always wondered though why electronic manufacturers never went into the electric car industry. Obviously car manufacturers were not going to do it.
- darksecret, on 07/07/2009, -0/+0Maybe it's been that long since I've been to Cary but wtf are they planning on charging up there, golf carts? Even in my area, which is the biggest metro region in NC, the closest thing to eco-friendly vehicles we have is the Prius and a handful of Smart cars which are more rare than exotics here.
The link to hybridcars.com does state Toyota will be selling plug-in hybrids in 2012 but it still makes me wonder why McDonald's would bother in a location not exactly known for eco-cars (or eco-friendly anything really), something like a site in LA or San Fran would make sense. - jkforty7, on 07/08/2009, -0/+0This gadget is uses an automatic transmission, has a low speed and a low range. I really doubt it's intended for highway use. Still, you're right, it should probably require a motorcycle license to drive. Your crack about Best Buy/high school drop outs is funny but don't worry because you're not required to show documentation that you're legally able to drive the vehicle away from the store. However, if you want to get a loan to buy one your bank will need to see proof you have insurance. I'm not sure how Best Buy will handle that.
BTW: A funny thing about "motorcycles" is that they really should be called "enginecycles" since they use an internal combustion engine for power and not an electric motor like this thing does. - immatellyouwhat, on 07/07/2009, -4/+4Could we BEEE any fatter???
